Most dental hygienists earn an associate’s degree, which takes about two years to complete. Your schooling will include time in the classroom and lab as well as a period of clinical experience. The latter is necessary to give you real-world experience before you embark on your career.
So which is better at cleaning teeth? The truth is: they’re both great. Our experts had differing opinions, and there’s evidence for the superior effectiveness of both oscillating and sonic brushes. What our dentists all agreed on is that more research is needed for a definitive answer: Most academic studies to date have simply focused on the different results between manual and electric toothbrushes. At the end of the day, both oscillating and sonic brushes will work well as long as they’re paired with proper brushing technique. Dr. Ben Lawlor of Maine Cosmetic Dentistry told us, “If you’re using an electric toothbrush that stimulates the gum, you’re good.” So rather than trying to pick a side based on inconclusive research, we focused on finding toothbrushes from both styles that had our must-have features and were celebrated for comfort.
Plaque is the culprit in cavities and gum disease. The longer plaque hangs around in your mouth, the more trouble it causes. As certain bacteria in plaque feed off fermentable carbohydrates (which include sugars, even those in fruit and milk, and starchy foods such as breads, pastas, and crackers), they produce an acid that eats away at tooth enamel, causing cavities.
You may thinking, “just buy a new toothbrush!” But if that’s the case, you’ve never met my two boys, especially the toddler, who can find a toothbrush no matter where it’s hidden! Seriously. He will move any kind of object (i.e. trash can, box, etc.) to creatively use as a step stool. He’ll climb right on top and grab our toothbrushes off the back of the bathroom counter. He will find them tucked away in the back of the bathroom drawer. It doesn’t matter where we hide the toothbrushes, he will find them.
Being a hygienist….has it’s tough days and easy days. LEARNING to become a hygienist is actually one of the most difficult programs you can go through – not in a stuck up way, but I have always been in honors courses throughout highschool and college, and studied 3 years for a double major before discovering and switching into hygiene. It is no joke – at least the program I was in. They only accepted 3.8GPA or higher and required pre-reqs.
Electric toothbrushes on the whole aren’t exactly known for their ruggedness and longevity (at least not nowadays). So in an era of lowest-possible-cost manufacturing and planned-obsolescence product design, both initial and replacement costs should be factors that are considered.
By the time you come to clean your teeth, your mouth is already a marauding cesspool of bacteria. The last thing you want to be doing is putting a toothbrush loaded with even more bacteria straight in your mouth. Here’s the easy way to keep your toothbrush hygienic.
Roles for dental hygienists in the U.S. are set to grow by 19 percent between 2014 and 2024, with 37,400 positions being added during this time. While this national average provides an idea of how the field is progressing, these numbers may be higher or lower in different states. Compare job outlook projections and the number of projected annual job openings with our job growth tool.
High school students interested in becoming dental hygienists should take courses in biology, chemistry, and math. Most dental hygiene programs also require applicants to complete prerequisites, which often include college-level courses. Specific requirements vary by school.
As we have mentioned in the previous review article of the sonic toothbrushes, the sonic technology is based on the high-speed vibrations. Creating 30,000 strokes of the brush head each minute, it disrupts plaque and cleans the mouth to perfection.
Unfortunately, our website doesn’t have the resources of a big organization (like Consumer Reports for example) who might run dozens of each model for weeks on end to evaluate reliability. Or scientifically measure how the brushing action of one compares to another. So, actually quantifying model differences isn’t really something we can do.
Diabetes, or elevated circulating blood sugar, is also a major culprit. Even people who have elevated sugars not yet at the level of diabetes, such as seen in metabolic syndrome, also have increased risk of plaque formation.
In many ways we’re probably too critical. But we have a high regard for sonic toothbrushes in general, and Sonicare in particular, and just feel that the features they offer should be more about substance than hype.
We’d be of the impression that at least a part of what you mention is a reference to Sonicare’s rating of the brush head that comes with the Diamond Clean as compared to the Easy Clean’s ProResults head. Those are the exact numbers (7x vs 2x) that are stated on the Sonicare website for those respective heads.

This toothbrush work great for about a month. Then the power began to wane and is now completely dead and does not work. I bought this toothbrush in December so it didn’t even last 6 months. My fiance has a toothbrush as well bought at the same time and while her still turns on the power is definitely not the same period I suspect hers will be going out soon.

Sterilized.. maybe but I hate to have to tell you it’s probably not clean in the sense most people are thinking. Soap leaves a residue that may or may not be harmful. Of course this depends on the soap your using.
Don’t do hygiene! No jobs, no benefits, crazy employers. When you get older they will want younger and you will be out. The work will ruin your back, hands and is psychologically tolling. Dead end boring career. Sorry I wasted my time in it.
This toothbrush is ideal for anyone, any age, and even for those with sensitivity, with gum recession, or undergoing orthodontic treatment or gum therapy because it gently massages the gums without any pain or bleeding. The colors in your pack of three toothbrushes will vary. This is an Amazon best seller and has nearly 600 five-star reviews on Amazon. It is frequently recommended by dentists, particularly for those with extra-sensitive gums and teeth.
I’m thoroughly convinced that one reason so many of us have a closet full of clothes we don’t love to wear, is that we shop aimlessly. We buy things JUST because they are on sale. Or JUST because an item is on the new trend list. The problem with that purposeless shopping is we don’t take […]
An ASA physical status classification system is used to indicate future treatment options for the patient, whilst considering the implications of risk factors, such as medical conditions (i.e. endocarditis, diabetes, smoking). This also allows the dental clinician to begin planning all non-surgical therapy.
So, you can expect that the DiamondClean and Flexcare models (both of these models at one time were Sonicare’s “top” brush) run more quietly than brushes at the other end of the price scale like the Easy Clean or Sonicare 2.
The Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) program produces employment and wage estimates annually for over 800 occupations. These estimates are available for the nation as a whole, for individual states, and for metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. Rinse your mouth with baking soda mixed with warm water afterwards. Also, you can use the same procedure with other food that contains vitamin C, like bell peppers, berries, lemons, lime, oranges and papaya.
At the time of this update (September 5, 2017), the above toothbrushes constituted all of the models that Sonicare (Koninklijke Philips N.V) displayed on the USA version of their website as their “current” products.
A dental hygienist or oral hygienist is a licensed dental professional, registered with a dental association, or regulatory body within their country of practice. Prior to completing clinical and written board examinations, Registered Dental Hygienists must have either an Associates or Bachelors degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited college or university. Once registered, hygienists are primary healthcare professionals who work independently of or alongside Dentists and other dental professionals to provide full oral health care. They have the training and education that focus on and specialize in the prevention and treatment of many oral disease. The dental hygienist is a primary resource for oral cancer screening and prevention. Most importantly, they spend a large amount of time at each patient visit looking at the soft tissues of the oral cavity, where the early manifestations of oral cancer occur.[1] They can choose to work in a range of dental settings from independent practice, private practice, and specialist practice to the public sector, and they can also work in residential aged care facilities.[2][3] Dental hygienists have a specific scope of clinical procedures they provide to their patients. They assess a patient’s condition in order to offer patient-specific preventative and educational services to promote and maintain good oral health. The use of therapeutic methods assists their patients in controlling oral disease, while providing tailored treatment plans that emphasize the importance of behavioral changes .[4] In most jurisdictions, hygienists work for a dentist or dental specialist, and some are licensed to administer local anesthesia and perform dental radiography.[5] The major role of a dental hygienist is to perform periodontal therapy which includes things such periodontal charting, periodontal debridement (scaling and root planing), prophylaxis (preventing disease) or periodontal maintenance procedures for patients with periodontal disease. In addition to these procedures, hygienists may take intraoral radiographs, apply dental sealants, administer topical fluoride, administer local anesthesia, and provide patient specific oral hygiene instruction.[6] They are also able to work at an orthodontic clinic and can perform many tasks there such as selecting and sizing of orthodontic bands for dental braces, the removal of orthodontic appliances. They are also able to make dental impressions for the construction of study casts and mouthguards.[4]
Having said that, while never a “top” model itself the Essence represents the yesteryear Sonicare technology that this line built its reputation on (both in the marketplace and dental research). That means you can be effective with this brush. And for people stepping up from a manual one, the difference should be noticeable.
Sonicare also makes an electric toothbrush specifically designed for kids. The cool part about this toothbrush is that it has some neat features like the KidTimer and KidPacer to encourage kids to brush well for the dentist recommended time.
The other week we put together a buyer’s guide to Oral-B Electric Toothbrushes, this week we have a guide to Sonicare toothbrushes. We’re going to navigate through all the Sonicare toothbrushes and brush heads and talk about their features (highlighting the unique ones) and prices to see which have the most to offer.
If someone in your family is sick or is at a higher risk of infection, taking some preventive steps may help guard against a problem. Replacing toothbrushes more often, buying disposable toothbrushes and using antibacterial mouthwash to rinse and soak could offer some benefit. If you choose to try a UV toothbrush sanitizer, the product should be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Keep in mind that a UV sanitizer will not remove all germs. Because the ultraviolet light may deteriorate the bristles, you should inspect and replace your toothbrush more often.
For their study, Fiala and colleagues isolated immune cells from blood samples taken from Alzheimer’s patients and healthy volunteers for comparison. The immune cells they were interested in are known as macrophages: these go around gobbling up waste products like amyloid beta that can otherwise clog up the spaces between cells and interfere with cell-to-cell signaling.
Several weeks ago the base unit’s UV light ceased working. While the base unit was still charging the handle just fine, it was no longer cleaning it. I received a new replacement only after sending my existing unit back. I would have liked to have continued using the original unit while I waited for the new one to arrive, but that was a minor inconvenience.
