Prerequisites for an associate’s degree include a high school diploma and minimum education requirements in major subject areas. ACT or SAT scores may be required. Bachelor’s degree programs require a high school diploma or equivalent, or an associate’s degree in dental hygiene; ACT or SAT scores are required, and schools of dentistry may also request letters of recommendation. Both associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs require intensive clinical components, such as hours of hands-on experience in a healthcare setting.
One of the newer types of electric toothbrushes is the “sonic” brush. This design was first brought to market in 1992 under the Sonicare brand name. This brand is still considered to be the preeminent product line representing this type of brushing technology.
This piece of German technology is engineered by Braun and claims to remove 300% more plaque from along the gum line when compared to a manual toothbrush. We cannot verify this claim, nor deny it. However, we can assert that the 7000 series comes equipped with a variety of options that will help you develop a better brushing technique. For instance, sensitivity sensors will stop you from brushing too hard, while the 6 independent functions will help you clean your teeth more efficiently.
The Dazzlepro Advanced Sonic’s handle is a little large and unwieldy, a satiny plastic tapered toward the middle of the handle, and the charging base is hefty, but this brush does a reasonable approximation of the Sonicare brushes’ motion. The Dazzlepro brush has a separate “sensitive” cleaning mode. However, the company has a lower profile, and the warranty lasts only one year (compared with Sonicare and Oral-B’s two years), so if you need support you may be left wanting. This brush is currently unavailable on Amazon and Overstock.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) adds that soaking your toothbrush could lead to cross-contamination if you use the same disinfectant over a period of time, or share disinfectant between users.[14]
For this best-value type of choice, we used to lean toward the Sonicare 3 Series. Now it seems (especially in light of some of the comments posted below and on retailer websites) that buying the HealthyWhite+ makes the better choice (both in performance and reliability).
Subscription toothbrushes: The main draw of a subscription toothbrush is convenience. Rather than having to buy a new replacement head every 3 months — the recommended lifespan of a toothbrush head — a subscription service will simply send you one. We held our subscription toothbrushes to the same quality standards as our other adult toothbrushes. But given that they are subscription toothbrushes, we also compared the terms of service to see whether one was more worthwhile or cost effective than the other.
I don’t remember that movie but that’s pretty funny. I really don’t know about the acidity and your tooth enamel. I would think that the flavor would not be appealing, though, to brush with. Do you rinse it before brushing? I think if you’re rinsing that would be ok. I’ve also heard about acidic foods and enamel erosion so it might be not be the best idea to brush with a vinegar sprayed brush. That’s just my opinion if it’s something you’re concerned about.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises against using your dishwasher or microwave to disinfect toothbrushes. The CDC even includes ultraviolet devices on the list of things that may damage the toothbrush.
Hi, thank you very much for this review. The web is full of chaos, because comments and reviews are not reasonable or someone paid for lots of them among the genuine ones. I appreciate your review very much.
“More and more dental hygienists will be hired to do this preventative health care,” but Swanson Jaecks says that physicians’ offices, emergency rooms and medical clinics are increasingly hiring dental hygienists to provide their patients with more holistic health care. These professionals can also be hired in academia and in research.
C3 Premium Plaque Control (introduced with DiamondClean Smart) – Deepest clean with flexible sides and unique bristle pattern.  4 times more surface contact. Automatically selects optimal cleaning mode for the best results. (Compatible brush required)
I agree with a lot of was reviewed here like bang for the buck and how the oscillating brush does remove more plague (7%). Have you guys considered that study has shown that the oral-b oscillating brush did not improve gum health over a 6 month study while the sonicare showed vast improvement for gum health in 6 months compared to oral b.
We switched the whole family from manual to the Sonicare brushes maybe a year ago and saw a pretty radical improvement in gum health. It’s impossible to tell how much of that came from the switch to electric and how much might be attributable to the type, but the subjective feeling of cleanliness with the Sonicare was remarkably different from other electrics I’ve tried in the past.
I much prefer the smaller circular heads as they are much easier to maneuver around your mouth and especially for spot scrubbing and getting behind the very back molars which is always a problem for me.
Please note: During the most recent update of our Oral-B pages (11/5/2015), we noticed that the Pulsonic was no longer listed with other current products on the Oral-B (USA) website. For that reason, we must assume that it has been discontinued.
The whitening mode is advertised to remove tooth stains from coffee, red wine, tobacco, tea, and ex-girlfriends. All of this within 14 days. Just kidding about the ex-girlfriend. But, maybe Philips should consider it for their advertisement.
I would stay away from a scalar (AKA a “dental pic”). If you know what yoi’re doing, that’s fine, but it’s risky and I would really do a lot of research on using one first. Research all sorts of write ups and videos first but, generally speaking, I wouldn’t advise it as too many people will screw something up even if it’s just 1 out of every 10 or 20 people, that’s still a lot of people.
Another great thing about this model is the wide range of replaceable toothbrush heads that can be used by those who want more flossing action, have sensitive teeth and otherwise. For instance, these Oral-B Cross Action toothbrush head replacements ($21.49; amazon.com) have angled bristles designed to get in between teeth and have hundreds of reviews on Amazon and a 4.7 out of 5-star ranking.
By the time you come to clean your teeth, your mouth is already a marauding cesspool of bacteria. The last thing you want to be doing is putting a toothbrush loaded with even more bacteria straight in your mouth. Here’s the easy way to keep your toothbrush hygienic.
1987 – Unsupervised practice: Hygienists may have their own dental hygiene practice; there are no requirement for the authorization or supervision of a dentist for most services. Colorado is currently the only state where this is approved. Case was won by JoAnn Grant, a dental hygienist from Fort Collins, CO. [40]
As many others have already said, what I received appear to be either non-OEM brush heads, or were defective in some way. In my case, the bristles looked like they had been lopped off with a pair of scissors – they were less than 1/4 of an inch long and cut in a very irregular fashion. Brown cardboard packaging may or may not be from Philips… I will steer clear of these in the future. Thanks Amazon for the refund.
Electric toothbrushes come in two different styles — oscillating or sonic. There’s debate about which type offers a better clean for your teeth, but it turns out choosing a style largely depends on comfort and personal preference.
Sucrose (table sugar) is most commonly associated with cavities. The amount of sugar consumed at any one time is less important than how often food and drinks that contain sugar are consumed. The more frequently sugars are consumed, the greater the time during which the tooth is exposed to low pH levels, at which point demineralisation occurs (below 5.5 for most people). It is important therefore to try to encourage infrequent consumption of food and drinks containing sugar so that teeth have a chance to be repaired by remineralisation and fluoride. Limiting sugar-containing foods and drinks to meal times is one way to reduce the incidence of cavities. Sugars from fruit and fruit juices, e.g., glucose, fructose, and maltose can also cause cavities.
Naturally, there are lots of online sales and deals out there which might make certain options more sensible. However, based on what I can gather from the Sonicare website and other sources the Sonicare EasyClean is the best deal because it has all the necessary features and can accept all the Snap-On brush heads. If you are looking to upgrade to some cooler features, I would opt for the FlexCare model with the UV sterilizer for brush heads. The 3 brushing modes and 2 brushing routines are identical to the 5 brushing modes of the FlexCare +, but the FlexCare is a bit easier on your wallet. Although UV sterilization of toothbrushes hasn’t been shown to make a significant difference in oral bacteria, it might hold some benefits for individuals with extremely high caries risks or aggressive gum disease since it will keep the toothbrush head a bit cleaner.
Yes, has it. – The DiamondClean Smart, DiamondClean, FlexCare Platinum Connected, FlexCare+ (plus), HealthyWhite+ (plus), Sonicare 3 series gum health, Sonicare 2 series plaque control, Sonicare for Kids, Essence+ and Essence models all feature this mode.
The best ways to prevent plaque from forming is to stick to good dental habits. Brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice per day (ideally once in the morning and once before you go to bed), and floss at least once per day.
I fully agree that the “extra features” are largely useless. But, bottom line, a powered brush makes sense based on everything I have seen. I don’t care if it’s Sonicare or OralB… both should be better than manual…

Once the head has been placed, it triggers the brush handle to switch to the brushing mode and intensity that Sonicare feels is best suited for that brush head’s design (see types/modes below), or else the settings you have manually programed.
Furthermore, the model we purchased for testing broke within a week. The battery died and simply refused to be charged again. Contacting Pursonic did nothing, as we never received a replacement or a decent explanation.
Does NOT include Sonicare toothbrush. Includes toothbrush heads only. 4 High Quality Generic. Reminder bristles let you know when to change brush heads gums as the brush head vibrates, cleaning a 10% …
About once a month, I use a damp toothbrush dipped in baking soda and gently brush away from my gums, keeping it as dry as possible. Then I floss it under my gums in a downward then outward motion, which pulls the loose plaque out to be rinsed away. At 61, only 1 crown due to popcorn chipping off a corner. I use Reach rinse with fluoride with no alcohol. No need to ‘feel the burn’ to be germ free
In 1910 the Ohio College of Dental Surgery offered a formal course for dental nurses. However, dentists in Ohio strongly opposed the formal training school, and those who completed the coursework were never allowed to practice. The course was soon to be discontinued in 1914 due to the backlash from the dental community.[9]
The Philips Sonicare 2 Series is our top pick for offering an effective clean without feeling gimmicky. As a sonic toothbrush, its brushing head vibrates rapidly to help remove plaque. Our testers reported that this style caused the least amount of irritation to their gums when compared to oscillating models from brands like Oral-B. It has a two-minute timer, divided into four 30-second segments, to ensure you brush long enough to effectively clean your teeth and gums but not so long that you damage them. At $40, the Sonicare 2 is a solid investment in improving your dental health.
Second, the pH in our mouths plays a substantial role in how much of the available minerals are deposited on our teeth as plaque and how much of these minerals in saliva actually repair our teeth.  Ideally, we want our saliva right around neutral, 6.8-7.0.  This ideal range provides the best environment to balance our oral flora.
The demand for dental services will increase as the population ages. As the large baby-boom population ages and people keep more of their original teeth than did previous generations, the need to maintain and treat teeth will continue to drive demand for dental care.
Employment of dental hygienists is projected to grow 20 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for dental services will increase as the population ages and as research continues to link oral health to overall health.
Our ever so brilliant writer of this guide just mentioned something that was so nifty all I could say was ‘wow’ –> Repurpose your old toothbrush as a new electric toothbrush cleaning tool. It will be able to get in those crevasses!

A 2014 study published in the Journal of Oral Health and Dental Management found that aloe vera demonstrates a similar effect on plaque and gingivitis compared with the benchmark control chlorhexidine mouthwash.
I have one. I actually prefer the older Sonicare in that it seems to remove more food between the teeth (you need to floss anyway). It also came with the standard diamondhead brush and I actually prefer the compact heads so I will try attaching a Prohead Compact brush to it and see if I like it better.
I highly recommend keeping your toothbrushes clean from airborne bacteria by using the Hangaway Universal Toothbrush Holder in a bathroom cabinet. It’s a great product that I’ve been using for years and it’s on Amazon for only a few dollars!
I’m a dental hygienist and have worked in areas volunteering including in shelters where people cannot afford “regular” dental visits. But please please do not run anything acidic on your teeth and leave it there for it to scientifically proven eat away at your teeth. Baking soda does have a toothpaste but large amounts causes microabrasions in the teeth, potentially causing tooth damage and increased staining. Light toothbrushing half on the tooth half on the gums with a basic fluoridated toothpaste , floss, and listerine mouth rinse will do the tricks. These are scientifically proven recommendations. Tartar builds up from increased minerals in the saliva, it’s natural but it also builds up underneath the gums which staying there for years can cause bone loss and infection in the body. Try to go if you can save up the 120 cleaning at least once a year, and if not do your best but be careful wielding sharp picks in your mouth it took me three years of school to learn that skill 😉
Like an associate’s degree, you’ll have to complete prerequisite coursework for a bachelor’s program. While many of your classes—dental anatomy, radiology, dental materials—will be the same whether you earn an associate’s or bachelor’s, the latter will allow you to dig deeper into the profession.
While you’ll learn dental hygiene techniques and procedures, a dental hygiene associate’s degree will help you better understand basic and dental sciences. During the course of your studies, you’ll learn how to make decisions about patient care, hone your critical thinking skills and improve your problem-solving abilities.
No ordinary brush head though is this.  Thanks to a built in chip, when you fit onto a compatible brush handle, the microchip communicates with the brush handle to launch the optimum cleaning mode and intensity level for the most effective plaque removal experience.

To us, battery isn’t an insignificant consideration. But if a particular model met our needs in all other ways, we’d let this one slip by. This page discusses the subject of battery options in greater detail.
Apps: Bluetooth connectivity and compatible phone apps that track your brushing habits are becoming increasingly popular with high-end models. It’s a neat feature, but a basic two-minute timer also encourages better technique and speaking with your dentist is really the best way to get updates on your dental health. The one exception is with kids’ brushes — apps can be helpful for encouraging children to brush. In fact, some brushing apps were so fun that children wouldn’t stop playing (manufacturers had to update their apps to make the game unplayable between brushes).
Hi, thank you very much for this review. The web is full of chaos, because comments and reviews are not reasonable or someone paid for lots of them among the genuine ones. I appreciate your review very much.
Despite the title of this page, we don’t really believe in monikers like the “best Sonicare.” After all, what’s best for one person may not satisfy the requirements or expectations of another at all. For example:
These state-licensed dental health professionals may be allowed different responsibilities and duties depending on the state in which they practice. However, basic services performed by dental hygienists, according to the American Dental Association (ADA), include:
Our toothbrushes end up in his mouth, on the floor, behind furniture…you get the idea. Germs from all over the house end up on our toothbrushes. If we replaced our toothbrushes every day, we would go broke. So, we learned to do the next best thing…disinfect them.
That’s too funny. Literally last night I spoke with Sonicare reps about the motor on mine going bad. My wife and I have used it for Literally 2 years AND 1 MONTH (we got it as a wedding gift so I know pretty specifically the start date). So upon talking to them they basically just shrugged their shoulders and said you’re outta luck, you’re beyond the 2 year warranty. They offered me a 15% off coupon code to use in their online store. Probably the same one that you got. Somewhat worthless since their cheapest models are $169 there and I’m not about to drop that kinda cash on a toothbrush. I don’t hate Sonicare but man that was lame of them.
Powered toothbrushes versus regular brushes – powered toothbrushes are fun and may remove more plaque than regular toothbrushes. Regular toothbrushes work fine, but powered toothbrushes make brushing easier.
The process for removing tartar is called scaling. During a scaling, the dentist or dental hygienist uses special instruments (ultrasonic and hand scalers, and curettes) to remove tartar and plaque from your teeth, above and below the gum line.
There is no dark magic and wizardly spells surrounding these vibrating and rotating toothbrushes. They are rather simple devices powered by a small motor that makes motions at sonic speed. The purpose of these electric gadgets is to help clean teeth by using rapid and automatic bristle motions.
AMEN, James!!! I LOVE that “fresh clean” feeling that I have first following a thorough cleaning at the dentist office. However, not everyone can AFFORD to have dental services done. This article helps those of us who don’t have $$$ to pay for the “luxury” of seeing a dentist
As a child growing up my mom would have us to brush with baking soda, everyone is always telling me how white my teeth are, til this day I still brush with it on top of my toothpaste. As for the hydrogen peroxide, we’ve alway used that as a mouth cleanse of germs every once and a while. My dentist even says how white my teeth are, so yes this advise is perfectly Safe.
full disclosure: I switched from a Sonicare DiamondClean to the recommended brush in this article, but it (the Pro 1000) gums up around the brush head attachment and becomes really gross and hard to clean. I also get this weird white filmy buildup around the top of it that disappears when wet and then reappears. I thought it was toothpaste but the only thing that cleaned it off was Clorox wipes. I’m considering switching back to my DiamondClean as a result.
To become a dental hygienist in the US one must attend a college or university that is approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination. There are several degrees one may receive. An associate degree after attending community college is the most common and only takes two years to obtain. After doing so, one may work in a dental office. There is also the option of receiving a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree if one plans to work in an educational institute either for teaching or research.
I will use the one I I tested out but I honestly would not have gotten them had I known they would be so stiff. I’ll just brush lightly and hope the bristles soften up but I won’t repurchase these for myself. I have already passed out one to each of my sons and to my husband, all of whom use medium bristle toothbrushes. For what it is worth, they all like these brushes. But if you are looking for truly soft bristles, I would recommend looking elsewhere.
Electric toothbrushes on the whole aren’t exactly known for their ruggedness and longevity (at least not nowadays). So in an era of lowest-possible-cost manufacturing and planned-obsolescence product design, both initial and replacement costs should be factors that are considered.
Even the extra soft bristles in Sonicare brush heads must maintain a certain stiffness to effectively remove plaque. Studies show that bristles begin to lose their stiffness due to splay and fatigue after three months of normal use though, these changes are only visible with a microscope.
When you consider the long-term use of a sonic toothbrush over years and decades, it only makes sense that the additional non-contact cleaning effect it creates may be significant (as compared to conventional electric or manual toothbrushes which don’t provide this benefit).

We found this particular model to be a bit chubby. Perhaps due to its older type of NiMH battery that takes a larger portion of the unit’s body. Unlike newer and sleeker models, this Sonicare feels chunky when you hold it.
Another factor which affects the risk of developing cavities is the stickiness of foods. Some foods or sweets may stick to the teeth and so reduce the pH in the mouth for an extended time, particularly if they are sugary. It is important that teeth be cleaned at least twice a day, preferably with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, to remove any food sticking to the teeth. Regular brushing and the use of dental floss also removes the dental plaque coating the tooth surface.
Another option that not all sellers and manufacturers like to give is a “money back guarantee”. In case they do offer it, make sure it is at least 1 month after purchase. Also, make sure the shipping and delivery dates are reasonable. You do not want to receive your toothbrush on the 30th day and not have time to claim your money back, in case it does not work or it is not up to your standards.
There are plenty of free apps—including Oral-B’s for Android and iOS—that can be used with non-“smart” brushes, powered or manual, to help you time and track your toothbrushing, remind you to clean your tongue and floss, and so on. Dr. Lopez-Howell pointed to The Children’s Oral Health campaign’s 2min2x website, produced in collaboration with the Ad Council, which offers a series of two-minute videos kids can watch while brushing.
Use baking soda. This is one of the oldest natural remedies for home plaque removal. Simply shake a small amount of baking soda into a bowl, wet your toothbrush, then dip the bristles into the baking soda to coat. Brush your teeth as normal. If you like, you can also mix a pinch of salt into the baking powder.[5]
First, let’s get the negatives out of the way, which will take a surprisingly small amount of time considering the surprisingly small price tag of the Fairywill Sonic Electric Toothbrush. This toothbrush does not have a revolving head like many popular models, but rather has bristles that vibrate. And said vibration is a bit too intense for some users. Also, the heads have a tendency to stop working properly much sooner than you would experience from hardware from pricier brands.
If you plan on buying a pair for you and your partner, I strongly suggest buying from Costco for their lifetime return policy. They have comparable Oral-B and SonicCare models and regularly run sales.
If you are a fan of Indian or Mexican food, you are in luck. According to dental scientists, spicy cuisines are great for reducing plaque and tartar levels in the mouth. They do this by increasing your production of saliva. As we know, salvia is the secret weapon of the oral environment. It washes over teeth and cleanses them of nasty stuff.
This is not a pleasant method for removing plaque, but it is natural and guaranteed not to harm teeth. It will taste pretty unpleasant, but it is effective. Take a solution consisting of two tablespoons of vinegar, one tablespoon of salt, and four ounces of water. Now, gargle with this vinegar solution. Rinse and repeat every 2-3 days for maximum value.
For more impressive results you can assist the Sonicare electric toothbrush by applying a whitening toothpaste such as AP24 from NuSkin or Oral-B  3d White Luxe Perfection which have been specifically designed to assist in stain removal for whiter teeth.

All of the sonicare toothbrushes are designed to provide the optimum shape and size to give the user the maximum benefit from the sonic action. If you have a sonic toothbrush and you choose an authentic Philips brush head that has been designed for the model that you own, you can be sure that you’ll always get the most possible power.
I have used an electric toothbrush for almost 7 years. I have had three total – two Sonicares and the Oral-B recommended in this post. The $$ involved for electric toothbrushes gives me pause but I cannot go back to manual (goosebumps).
Programs typically take 3 years to complete, and offer laboratory, clinical, and classroom instruction. Areas of study include physiology, nutrition, radiography, pathology, medical ethics, anatomy, patient management, and periodontics, which is the study of gum disease.
The FlexCare Platinum comes equipped with 3 brushing modes: Clean, White and Gum Care. Each cleaning mode allows the user to moderate the intensity of the brush using 3 additional levels. This further helps new users to ease into this powerful sonic toothbrush.
You brush your teeth twice a day and floss regularly, but when you get to the dentist, you find out that your teeth still require excessive scraping and cleaning to remove tartar. If you’re tired of spending so much time in the dental chair for cleanings, Sonicare can help you improve the effectiveness of your at-home oral hygiene routine to benefit the health of your teeth and gums. By producing thousands of sonic vibrations per second, Sonicare toothbrush heads can remove more plaque than what most people can lift away with a manual brush. Because plaque is the substance that hardens into tartar, a Sonicare brush can help you enjoy quicker trips to the dentist as well as a cleaner smile and healthier gums. The Sonicare collection is recommended by dentists all over the country and has been helping people improve their oral health since 1992. You can find all of the most popular brush heads for Sonicare power toothbrushes in the brush head collection at Walgreens.

All you need to become a dental hygienist is an associate degree or certificate, so you can enter this in-demand career relatively quickly! Once you earn your licensure in the state in which you plan to work, you’ll be ready to begin your career as a dental hygienist.2
“Average folks brush 46 seconds. With timers people will go to at least the two minutes,” said Dr. Joan Gluch, an adjunct associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. “Clinically, we see patients do better with powered toothbrushes.” Dr. Mark Wolff, a professor at NYU Dental School and chair of the Cariology and Comprehensive Care department, agreed: “It helps people that don’t brush well,” he said. “If you need the guidance, invest in the guidance.”
If you can not afford to go to the dentist please find a dental school. Dental hygienist schools require students to clean teeth and they need hard cases . You could even be paid for your time ! Please do not attempt to do these cleanings at home . Brush and floss your teeth daily . The person posting this does not understand the bacteria present in your mouth or that calculous can be sub -below the gum line . If you have tarter build up like in the picture chances are you also have periodontal disease and need a cleaning below the gum line . Not treating this can lead to chronic health issues . I have seen extremely white teeth that an exray showed deep decay . Please see a dentist , go to a dental school , call around and see if you can make payments .
When it comes to functionality and features, this is by far not the most advanced product. With 11,000 high-intensity pulsations per minute, it falls short to compete with Philips and Oral-B. Instead, the Issa model is a daring attempt by Foreo to give the standard motor-powered toothbrush a face-lift.
While the ADA notes there is no clinical evidence that soaking a toothbrush in antibacterial mouthwash has a positive effect, it won’t damage your toothbrush. If you want to sanitize, toothbrush heads should be immersed for about 15 minutes in mouthwash. Any longer could damage the bristles. And don’t share or reuse that mouthwash, it defeats the purpose.

We spent 10 weeks reading through medical journals, researching online and speaking to manufacturers and dental professionals. As a result, we made up a solid list of rotary and sonic toothbrushes to test, rate and review.
Back in March 2010, Consumer Reports performed its own tests for plaque removal and concluded, “[T]he two priciest brushes removed 75 percent or more of plaque in our tests, on average.” In the years following those tests, two of the top models have been discontinued and replaced by similar ones, and one has been recalled; as of May 2016, CR no longer tests toothbrushes at all. GHI’s recommendations don’t say much and do not explain whether expensive features are really necessary.
Research suggests that chewing gum sweetened with sorbitol or xylitol between meals can prevent plaque buildup. Be sure not to chew gum with sugar, which encourages bacteria growth on the teeth. Eating a healthy diet that’s low in added sugars, on the other hand, can limit bacteria growth on your teeth. Be sure to eat lots of fresh produce, whole grains, and lean proteins.
The Philips Sonicare 2 Series is our top pick for its minimalist design and comfortable cleaning power. It comes with one brushing mode, a two-minute timer, and a quad-pacer to guide you as you brush with 40,000 strokes per minute. At $40, it doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, but we appreciated the simple design, because nothing felt unnecessary. Competitors like the Brio came with additional brushing modes, but our testers reported that the experience wasn’t much different and our experts reinforced that an electric toothbrush with the right technique will do more than any brushing mode can.
Dr. Durrant is a dentist in Sugarhouse. Of these toothbrush cleaning techniques, he recommends soaking your toothbrush in mouthwash. “It gives your toothbrush a fresh taste,” he says. If you are looking for the best dentist in Sugarhouse, Dr. Durrant is your guy. However, if you are looking for the best dentist in Utah, any one of our Platinum Dental dentists could qualify. At Platinum Dental Care, we only hire the best doctors and staff to serve our patients in Utah. 2005 – PA 161 Dental hygienist: hygienists with grantee status can work in a public or nonprofit environment, a school or nursing home that administers dental care to a low-income population. Dentists collaborating with dental hygienists do not need to be present to authorize or administer treatment. However, dental hygienists must have the availability to communicate with a dentist in order to review patient records and establish emergency protocols. Hygienists need to apply to the state department of community health for grantee status.[43]
I want to become a dental hygienist but what I’m most worried about is after i finish up my 2 years of college, if I’ll be able to get hired! Or if they’ll allow me to work full time in just one office. I am a single mother and I am graduating at 17. I guess I’m worried about whether or not I’ll be allowed in one office and if my hours will make me at least 50,000 annually like the internet says it will.
You know that super clean feeling your mouth has after a visit to the dentist? It’s because they’re able to thoroughly clean your teeth in ways that your manual toothbrush just can’t. Using state-of-the-art sonic technology and 40,000 tiny brush strokes per minute, the TAO Clean Aura Clean Sonic Toothbrush and Cleaning Station safely and hygienically cleans your mouth by dislodging debris from your teeth and gums, and efficiently polishing your teeth. Not only that, but because it automatically shuts off after (dentist-recommended) 2 minutes of brushing, your pearly whites are actually getting 80,000 total brush strokes every time you brush your teeth! Do you think you could do 80,000 brush strokes in 2 minutes?
If you are prone to developing tartar patches or are worried about plaque, pick up a tartar control toothpaste variety. They contain a concoction of ingredients designed to battle against crusty build ups in the mouth. In some cases, they also contain triclosan. This is an antibiotic substance that can kill off a number of bacteria strains.
All dental hygienists in the United States must be licensed by the state in which they practice, after completing a minimum of two years of school and passing a written board known as the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination as well as a clinical board exam. After completing these exams and licenses, dental hygienists may use “R.D.H” after their names to signify that they are a registered dental hygienist.[32][33] Dental hygienists also have to become licensed in the state in which they intend to practice. State licensure requirements vary, however most states require an associate degree in Dental Hygiene, successful completion of a state licensure examination, as well as a clinical examination also typically administered by the state.
As I mentioned earlier, electric toothbrushes do not run on dark magic and Jedi crystals, they run on electricity. The very first vibrating brushes were unavoidably designed to be used only when directly plugged into the outlet. This is not only dangerous but also inconvenient. For this reason, batteries have now become the preferred method of charging these devices.
As we noted earlier in this guide, brush heads are a matter of personal preference of size, shape, and material. A number of third-party brands make replacement heads for Oral-B toothbrushes that tend to be much cheaper. There are some reports in user reviews that these aftermarket brushes sometimes do not fit or are of a lower quality than branded brushes, and the heads tend to be rated lower. Pay close attention when shopping for brush heads to what is “Oral-B” vs. “Oral-B compatible.”
Thanks. That’s a good tip but I’m talking about 3 to 4 years (the normal lifespan of the battery, not a faulty one) and and the mechanism is good for way more than that. That makes it unnecessarily disposable and therefore an environmental bad.
Hi Isabel, thanks for reaching out! You can see what courses are included in our Dental Hygiene program by visiting http://docs.carrington.edu/catalog/carrington-college.pdf, pages 38-40. If you would like more information, visit http://carrington.edu/start-now/ or give us a call at 1-855-289-2171.
The Oral-B Pro 1000 is many consumers’ first choice of an electric toothbrush. It is inexpensive, it cleans well, and it is easier to use when compared to most high-end models that come with smartphone apps and Bluetooth connections. As all other Oral-B models, it is oscillating, so that makes it a bit slower when compared to our top choice – the Sonicare 2 Series. When tested, we found the Pro 1000 is also not as gentle on the gums. We believe that to be due to the harder bristles on the brush head.
Nursing would be a far better choice! There is growth opportunities and so many options with a nursing career. With a hygiene degree all you can do is work for a dentist. I’ve read all the Bologna about how we can work in hospitals or schools, etc…I see no actual positions?
Electric toothbrushes come in two different styles — oscillating or sonic. There’s debate about which type offers a better clean for your teeth, but it turns out choosing a style largely depends on comfort and personal preference.
You may thinking, “just buy a new toothbrush!” But if that’s the case, you’ve never met my two boys, especially the toddler, who can find a toothbrush no matter where it’s hidden! Seriously. He will move any kind of object (i.e. trash can, box, etc.) to creatively use as a step stool. He’ll climb right on top and grab our toothbrushes off the back of the bathroom counter. He will find them tucked away in the back of the bathroom drawer. It doesn’t matter where we hide the toothbrushes, he will find them.
It’s been a couple years since the first app-connected, or “smart,” electric toothbrushes became available, but they still don’t offer enough capabilities for their added cost for us to recommend them for most people. (They’re at least double the price of a standard electric toothbrush.) “Smart” brush capabilities vary widely, but mainly these devices automate the process of tracking your brushing habits, typically by connecting to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth. The most expensive “smart” models, like the Oral-B Genius and Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Connected can track where the brush is in your mouth.
Oral-B Glide Pro-Health plus Scope Outlast Flavor Floss Picks combine the silky smooth texture of Glide floss with the freshness of Scope and the ease of a pick, to help remove plaque and food particles between teeth and just below the gum line.
Two-minute timer: The single most recommended feature, a two-minute timer takes the guesswork out of your brushing sessions to ensure your teeth get enough time under the bristles. Brushing under the American Dental Association’s recommended two minutes can result in a less effective clean. Dr. Lawlor told us, “patients say they brush for three to five minutes, but when they brush in front of me it will be less than a minute.” Most electric toothbrushes now offer this reality-check timer as a standard feature, regardless of price.
I was just checking Amazon for the HX6511/50. It has one left and says that this model has been discontinued and replaced by the HX6631/30 model. What do you think? Should I buy the 6631 model instead? Thanks so much
The best Oral-B models – Our narrative outlining how to figure out which model makes the best choice for you. It covers Oral-b features, which of them we think are important to have, and which models seem to offer a reasonable manifestation of them.
Sometimes a higher price tag is justified by the number of modes the electric toothbrush comes equipped with. There are models that allow users to adjust a variety of settings based on their current needs. For instance, some of those settings include deep cleaning mode, sensitive gums mode, whitening mode and massage mode. These modes are also often accompanied by the ability to change between rotating, oscillating, vibrating and pulsating motions.
W3 Premium White (introduced with DiamondClean Smart) – Helps whiten teeth in just 3 days by removing plaque and surface stains. 4 times more surface contact. Automatically selects optimal cleaning mode for the best results. (Compatible brush required)
The terms ‘plaque’ and ‘tartar’ are commonly used in an interchangeable fashion. And, as they are very similar, this is not usually a problem. They are different things, however; plaque is the actual bacteria that causes decay and cavities. The tartar on your teeth is an accumulation of stains, saliva, food, dirt, and grime. It makes it easier for the plaque to take a hold of teeth.
Use the correct brushing technique. When brushing your teeth, hold the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle against the gum line and sweep the brush away from the gums, in a short vertical, back-and-forth, or circular motions. Try not too scrub too hard, as this can actually damage the enamel on your teeth and cause high sensitivity to any type of stimulus.[2]
How to Remove Tartar BuildupHow to Remove Plaque at HomeRemoving plaque at home on a daily basis lessens your chances of tartar buildup and experiencing more serious dental problems such as cavities, gingivitis, and bad breath. Healthy dental habits, such as brushing for two minutes twice daily and flossing after every brush, can help you prevent the harmful effects of plaque buildup. If you have kids, remember: It’s never too early to help them learn good oral care.Manual brushes can be effective. But Oral-B® Electric Toothbrushes make it even easier to brush the dentist-recommended two minutes and remove 100% more plaque than a regular manual toothbrush. Remove 22% More Plaque with Oral-B than Sonicare*This easy at-home routine, along with using Oral-B Electric Toothbrushes, can help ensure you’ll keep your mouth healthy for a long time to come.
As I also thought as some other here in the discussion, that it might be only design differences for the premium Sonicare models compared to lower level models, I got curious if you could get this excellent brushing experience for less money, to recommend friends and found the Sonicare 3 series gum health HX6631 with 3 intensity levels (for around half price of Flexcare+) where Philips claimed 7 times better plaque removal compared with a regular tooth brush for the gum health at maximum cleaning mode and the 6 times for the Flexcare+ that I first had bought.

Features: Easy start – gently increases power over 14 uses, UV sanitizer accommodating two Sonicare brush heads, Smart Timer with Quadpacer – Alerts you every 30 seconds to change quadrants and again when you have reached 2 minutes
Start your brushing in one corner of the mouth and slowly guide the bristles around all of the teeth. You don’t need to scrub but with light pressure gently move the brush head. Make small back and forth movements over the teeth. This will help the longer bristles to reach deeper between the teeth. So you just show the brush where to go and the sonic vibrations do the cleaning work for you.
Offering the deepest clean, the Sonicare electric toothbrush is not as effective without such an engineered brush head.  Taking full advantage of the high-frequency and high-amplitude brush movements, performing over 31,000 strokes per minute, the brush head takes that power and drives toothpaste and fluid deep in between teeth.
Electric toothbrushes are not any more effective at cleaning teeth than regular manually-operated ones. However, some people find that they are inclined to brush their teeth more regularly and for longer when they own an electric toothbrush, so investing in one may not be a bad idea.
That is a completely ad hominem attack on a scientific paper in a peer-reviewed journal. Do you have any specific complaints with their methods, procedures, or analysis, which is completely laid out in the open? If so, then let’s hear them. That’s the great thing about the scientific method.
Overall (primarily based on what we’ve read in the comments found on large retailer websites) it’s our impression that first-time Sonicare owners are generally satisfied with this brush (as an improvement over their manual one) but previous owners tend not to be.
The Oral-B Vitality electric toothbrush provides a superior clean vs. a regular manual toothbrush. The round shape of the Floss Action toothbrush head is designed to clean tooth by tooth, and its MicroPulse bristles reach deep between teeth. 2D cleaning action oscillates and rotates for better plaque removal than a regular manual toothbrush and an in-handle timer helps you brush for a dentist-recommended 2 minutes. Best of all, it’s brought to you by Oral-B – the brand used by dentists worldwide.
My flexcare finally died after 5 years of use (best brush ive ever owned, though the uv bulb cleaner died after only less than 2 years) , so ive been to both target and bbb and came home to compare the models, hoping i didnt need to get the top model anymore, and wow was this so informative, kinda sad the series 2 doesnt have the quadpacer or that would easily be the best buy, but i do need that option.
This is an all-round great tip, not just one for keeping your teeth healthy. Whether you like them or not, vegetables are a super ingredient. They are great for physical health and the teeth are no exception. Start munching on apples, celery sticks, carrots, and peppers to get your teeth looking strong and healthy in no time.
Our toothbrushes end up in his mouth, on the floor, behind furniture…you get the idea. Germs from all over the house end up on our toothbrushes. If we replaced our toothbrushes every day, we would go broke. So, we learned to do the next best thing…disinfect them.
Chew sesame seeds. Chew a spoonful of sesame seeds, but do not swallow. Then use a dry toothbrush to brush your teeth, using the sesame seeds as a kind of toothpaste. They will help to remove plaque and polish your teeth at the same time.[6]
About once a month, I use a damp toothbrush dipped in baking soda and gently brush away from my gums, keeping it as dry as possible.

“Truthfully, at the end of the day, for pennies and minutes—you don’t need all of these more costly brushes—you can choose oral health,” Dr. Lopez-Howell said. No matter the toothbrush (manual or powered, “smart” or not), “brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, floss once daily, and visit your dentist to make sure that you’re doing the right thing.”
The brushes themselves are small than those of philips’ brushes and cut into wavy shapes to fit the Outlines of each tooth. They are soft and round tips to prevent excessive abrasions of your gums. However, they are very durable because I bought the first one (this is about a month ago, still half the life span).
Consider a toothbrush sanitizer. While studies do not show any particular benefit to these devices, you can purchase one that has been cleared by the FDA. Toothbrush sanitizers kill up to 99.9% of bacteria on the brush. (Sterilizing means that 100% of bacteria and living organisms have been killed, and no commercial toothbrush cleaner can claim this.)
Furthermore, the model we purchased for testing broke within a week. The battery died and simply refused to be charged again. Contacting Pursonic did nothing, as we never received a replacement or a decent explanation.
Even though we’ve been brushing and flossing our teeth for years and years, many of us are surprised to learn that we’re not doing it properly. Case in point: Did you know that proper brushing takes at least two minutes? Most adults do not come close to brushing that long.
I am currently going to school to get my associates degree. I have apply to a dental hygiene program but may take up to two years to get into, is it work the wait? Or any other care error suggestions, I am a single mom and need something with good hours!
Nothing but frustration with Phillips USA that owns Sonicare. My product failed and at first Phillips said they would do nothing. Then they agreed to replace it, but sent me a computer battery instead. Then they sent 3 Sonicare AIrfloss. I had to go to the post office four times to return items they sent by mistake. My chats and calls to the company were disconnected. Promises were made then rescinded. In frustration I wrote the CEO about the hours of my time they wasted with their compounded mistakes. Mr Brent Shafer, the CEO waited weeks before they would respond and all they would do is of free couple brush heads – not appropriate in my book given the massive amount of time and frustration they caused me.
Therefore if you own the Sonicare, 2 Series plaque defence, 3 Series gum health, DiamondClean, EasyClean, FlexCare, FlexCare Platinum, FlexCare+, for Kids or HealthyWhite any of the following brush heads can be used.
However, if you prefer a larger brush, the Deep Sweep has performed favorably to Sonicare brushes in clinical studies: http://www.dentalcare.com/media/en-US/research_db/pdf/products/8week-eval-benefits-multidirectional.pdf
I do not belive the statistics given here about dental hygiene being in the top 5 best jobs. I am a licenced dental hygienist in the state of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene from the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis, Tennessee. I am an older hygienist who has through circumstances of life have had to move various times and have found it very hard to find employment!!! I have not been able to find any employment whatsoever!!! It has been my experience, there are way too many dental hygienists out there with not enough jobs to provide them adequate employment. My state has way too many DH schools and is turning out dental hygienists left and right with no jobs for them to get after graduation. Also, I find most dentists do not want to hire an older hygienist even though I have good references and experience Sadly, I think they are too cheep to pay me what I am worth and would rather hire someone with less experience. Most really decent, honorable dentists already have loyal hygienists, who would not leave their practice for anything and I don’t blame them! I have also tried enrolling in a business who gave employment by being a substitute hygienist. This did not, by any means, provide enough work and income to survive on, even living modestly. Being thoroughly disappointed, I have given up totally on the dental hygiene field all together. I recommend by experience to anyone who is thinking of dental hygiene try becoming a dentist or nurse. You will save yourself a lot of misery because I have had my fill of it!
The more bells and whistles your toothbrush has, the more expensive it will be, so it’s important to think about what features you’ll actually use. Sure, gum massaging modes and phone apps sound appealing, but if you’re not going to use these features daily you shouldn’t have to pay for them. We asked our experts which features were essential for improving brushing technique and which might be useful but not necessary. They narrowed it down to the following options:
Also, on that note, you can disinfect BETTER with first soaking in vinegar, than soak it in hydrogen peroxyde, but dont use them together (dont mix them in a container together, it could turn into acid…)
It’s a more simple model. It offers only a cleaning mode. It has one timer for two minutes of brushing but does not have a quad pacer. For some people, it’s important, while for others a 2-minute timer is enough.

Fun Features: KidTimer – Increases brushing time slowly over 90 days, building towards the dentist recommended 2 minutes, KidPacer – Fun sounds encourage kids to brush the front and back of both upper and lower teeth
The three brush heads below were introduced alongside the DiamondClean Smart. Whilst they fit and work on other models, the included smart chip that automatically selects the optimal cleaning mode works only with the DiamondClean Smart because it has BrushSync mode pairing. When Sonicare introduces more brushes with BrushSync pairing mode, they will also be compatible with those brushes.
Hello guys! Thank you so much for all of the reviews about the Sonicares. However I still don´t know which one to buy. My main reason for buying a Sonicare is because it should whiten the teeth. Should I get the Healthy White or all the other similar ones will do the job?
Regular dental appointments are also critical in preventing additional plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. Your dentist will scrape and clean your teeth so they’re free of plaque and tartar. They may also perform a fluoride treatment, which can prevent and slow the growth of plaque bacteria and buildup of tartar on your teeth. This helps prevent tooth decay.
Sterilized.. maybe but I hate to have to tell you it’s probably not clean in the sense most people are thinking. Soap leaves a residue that may or may not be harmful. Of course this depends on the soap your using.
In 1898 Smith presented a lecture on his system of periodic oral prophylaxis, which required patients to attend regular visits for prophylactic treatment and education sessions around oral home care.[9]

An Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene is a two-year program that introduces fundamental topics in dental hygiene and prepares graduates for entry-level positions as dental hygienists. A Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene can be completed in four years of full-time study and is usually offered by schools of dentistry.
The Goby Electric Toothbrush is only a few dollars more than our other picks and comes with the same no-frills features: a two-minute timer that shuts the brush off at the end, plus a quadrant timer to prompt you to switch areas every 30 seconds. Goby offers an “optional” brush head subscription service—however, keep in mind that you can’t get new brush heads anywhere else and there is only one kind available. Unlike the Sonicare, there is no travel case to stash your brush head.
While we love to dive into interesting, important and sometimes obscure topics like how oil pulling helps heal leaky gut and how smiling contributes to greater immune expression, today let’s go back to basics and discuss one of the most frequently asked questions we get around how to brush our teeth.
Routine tooth brushing is the principal method of preventing many oral diseases, and perhaps the most important activity an individual can practice to reduce plaque buildup.[14] Controlling plaque reduces the risk of the individual suffering from plaque-associated diseases such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and caries – the three most common oral diseases.[15] The average brushing time for individuals is between 30 seconds and just over 60 seconds.[16][17][18][19][20][21] Many oral health care professionals agree that tooth brushing should be done for a minimum of two minutes, and be practiced at least twice a day.[22] Brushing for at least two minutes per session is optimal for preventing the most common oral diseases, and removes considerably more plaque than brushing for only 45 seconds[14][22]

Who Sells Philips Diamond Clean Toothbrush

As with most of the toothbrush models we tested, the battery life indicator on the Pro 1000 is vague: It lets you know when the battery is full (a continuous green light for five seconds after you remove it from the charging base) and when it is “low” (a red flashing light after turning the brush off). Oral-B does not specify how long it takes to get the brush to a full charge, but you can charge it every day without significantly affecting the battery’s capacity as long as you deplete it fully once every six months.
Capable of removing up to 10 times more plaque than a manual brush, whilst achieving 2 times more surface contact, the Gum Care brush head makes use of all the sonic vibrations passed out by the brush handles motor.  It whips toothpaste into bubble and drives them deep between your teeth and along the gumline for gentle and effective cleaning.
The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) is an EEO/AA institution and an equal opportunity employer of protected veterans and individuals with disabilities. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, or national origin. A lack of English language skills will not be a barrier to admission and participation in the career and technical education programs of the District.
As one of Oral-B’s higher-tech models, the 6000 is packed with features, options, and raw power. This supercharged toothbrush will perform up to 48,000 precision movements per minute if you let it loose. The price you pay for this is a heavier body. The 6000 model weighs 168g and is about 20% heavier of some Philips toothbrushes that have similar features.
After doing the above calculations, you’ll find that a Sonicare has a frequency of about 258 hz, which is actually toward the bottom of the audible range given above. Just as a point of interest, this same frequency in musical terms (the hum you hear) is about Middle C on the piano.
Clinical procedures provided typically include removal of plaque, calculus and stains from the teeth; exposing and processing dental X-rays; applying cavity-preventive agents, such as fluorides and pit and fissure sealants; and administering antimicrobial agents. In some states, they also administer local anesthetics and nitrous oxide; place and carve filling materials, temporary fillings, and periodontal dressings; remove sutures; perform root-planing as a periodontal therapy; and polish restorations. In addition, they can provide clinical and laboratory diagnostic tests for interpretation by other health professionals.
If you’ve left the field for a time because of family or other work commitments but are interested in returning to dental hygiene as your career, you’ll find re-entry education courses to help you get there. The good thing about re-entry programs is that schools will often tailor them to your needs, though most require a pre-screening or phone interview to determine whether or not you are eligible. You also must have graduated previously from an accredited dental hygienist program. Most re-entry programs require more than one participant, and may also require you to do your clinical work on weekends.
The compact design also makes for a more comparable offering to Oral-B’s brush head design that typically is smaller than that of Philips Sonicare brushes.  The technology and motion is still slightly different in how each head moves and cleans the tooth surface, but both still do an excellent job.
The demand for dental services will increase as the population ages. As the large baby-boom population ages and people keep more of their original teeth than did previous generations, the need to maintain and treat teeth will continue to drive demand for dental care.
To follow through with our car analogy, if you buy an economy car you can expect that it will get you to your destination. But your experiences during your trip (acceleration up hills, smoothness of ride) aren’t going to be the same as if you had bought a Cadillac.
Vitamin D3 is essential for bone and immune system health. The main source of the vitamin, which is made in the skin, is sunshine. Deficiencies may occur during winter months or in those who are indoors most of the time, such as people with Alzheimer’s disease.
The electric toothbrushes we tested come in two varieties: vibration and rotation. Ultimately, you likely won’t notice a difference in results from one style to the other, so you should choose one that complements your brushing style.
We do hope that this page, complete with detailed explanations and brush head comparisons, will answer many of your questions and help you find the right brush head for you and your Sonicare brush. So let’s jump straight in.
Graduate degrees in the field of dental hygiene are typically two-year programs and are completed after the bachelor’s degree. Common graduate courses in dental hygiene include Healthcare Management, Lab Instruction, and Clinical Instruction.[citation needed]
Philips is committed to understanding and meeting the needs and desires of its customers. This is why Philips creates cutting-edge products that are user friendly. With 60,000 registered patents, Philips is a global leader in innovation, receiving numerous international design awards every year. Sonicare is the number one recommended brand by dental professionals.

Yes, after looking closer, its not rubber, it has a small, pointed bristle head. It came with my SonicFX base, and set of brushes. I think they are called “interdental” brushes on their reorder web page.
Although bachelor’s degree programs for dental hygienists are less common than an associate’s degree program, you can find some that will prepare you for a career outside—as well as inside—the dental office. Pursuing a 4-year degree in dental hygiene studies is particularly useful if you plan to teach, participate in research or work in clinical practice in public or school health programs. Some dentists also prefer to hire hygienists with a bachelor’s degree.
As another alternative to Sonicare, you might consider the WaterPik Sensonic Professional Plus (SR-3000). As with the Pulsonic, its features list places it in the same general category as the Sonicare models we discuss on this page.

Dental hygienist instructors train new dental hygienists at academic institutions such as community colleges and universities. They instruct students in classrooms and laboratory settings in methods to remove tartar and stains, take and process x-rays, apply sealants and fluorides, as well as proper oral care and tracking treatment plans and patient care. These instructors must be able to work with a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds, responding to their questions and ensuring they are learning course materials. Dental hygiene instructors must also maintain good student records, as well as stay up to date on developments within their field.
Like most electric toothbrushes by Philips, this one also comes with a rechargeable Lithium ION battery. Once fully charged, the battery should be able to last you 3 weeks if you brush twice a day using the “clean” setting. The “deep clean” setting is likely to exhaust the battery faster because it is operating at a higher speed and producing more brush strokes per minute.
[Actually, if you do the math you’ll find that even these low frequency brushes do have stroke rates that lie inside the audible range (although the very bottom of it). But as a matter of convention, they’re not classified as sonic toothbrushes.]
Rechargeable battery: A rechargeable battery saves you the cost of replacing traditional batteries during an electric toothbrush’s lifespan — at least 3 years. In addition, it decreases the risk of a dead toothbrush and the loss of electric brushing’s benefits. Most electric toothbrushes offer a rechargeable battery that lasts, on average, two weeks per charge.
Personal satisfaction: One of the most enjoyable aspects of a career in dental hygiene is working with people. Personal fulfillment comes from providing a valuable health care service while establishing trusting relationships with patients.
“This brush is one mighty little powerhouse. The last two motorized toothbrushes we received and paid more for were ‘gutless wonders.’ So I thought just to get a cheap one, and if it doesn’t work, well, no big deal. The SURPRISE, however, was that this model works better than I’d even hoped for. My spouse’s brush cost ten times what this one does and I cannot see that he gets anything more from his high-priced brush compared to my new one.”
Dental hygienists generally receive their education through colleges and universities, dental schools, junior colleges, and technical schools. The minimum requirement for state licensure of dental hygienists is an associate degree, which takes about two years to complete. The conclusion of any dental hygiene program is a clinical externship, which allows students to apply their skills and knowledge in a dental care setting through supervised patient experiences.

As the son of a dentist (sounds bad, doesn’t it!) I can attest to people not brushing enough… I saw this many times, self-reported from patients. The timer helps, but I don’t believe that this is the only factor.
Dental hygienists make comfortable salaries, especially considering half of them work part time. In 2016, their median salary was $72,910, according to the BLS. The best-paid 10 percent earned $100,170, and the lowest-paid 10 percent earned $50,870.
Overall, the DiamondClean will give an effective clean and is compatible with a library of brushing heads. It’s an upgrade from the Sonicare 2 Series due to its added convenience of an effective pressure sensor and an app that displays your brushing progress for even easier brushing. It’ll cost an extra $125, but for feature-loving brushers the DiamondClean is a pick you won’t regret.
Security: The services that dental hygienists provide are needed and valued by a large percentage of the population. There is currently a great demand for dental hygienists. Employment opportunities will be excellent well into the future. Due to the success of preventive dentistry in reducing the incidence of oral disease, the expanding older population will retain their teeth longer, and will be even more aware of the importance of regular dental care. With the emphasis on preventive care, dentists will need to employ more dental hygienists than ever before to meet the increased demand for dental services.
I would only use this method as a last resort. But, you can disinfect your toothbrush in the microwave. I’ve tried it before with success but I would watch the toothbrush VERY closely! Depending on the material it’s made out of, it could melt…so keep your eyes on it like a hawk. Wet the toothbrush bristles and microwave for 10 or so seconds.
The advantage of a sonic brush is that it cleans teeth via two different methods. Beyond just conventional tooth scrubbing, it also creates a secondary cleansing action that helps to disrupt dental plaque beyond where the tips of its bristles actually touch.
normally, you soak in vinegar to disinfect, then use baking soda to turn it into water after it has been disinfected.. then the water can evaporate nicely and leaves no vinegar smell. awesome for furniture. i wouldn’t do it on my toothbrush.
Overall (primarily based on what we’ve read in the comments found on large retailer websites) it’s our impression that first-time Sonicare owners are generally satisfied with this brush (as an improvement over their manual one) but previous owners tend not to be.
Oral-B’s brushes are also, on average, less expensive than replacement heads for other brushes. Dentists recommend getting a new toothbrush every three months, so these cost savings can add up over time. The Sonicare brush heads tend to be more expensive, but brands like the Waterpik and Dazzlepro have heads that are roughly the same price.

Protect Oral Hygiene With Endotracheal Tube

No, it’s not. Baking soda is pure sodium bicarbonate and while baking powder contains some sodium bicarbonate, it also contains cream of tartar and some type of starch. They are both used as leavening agents. Hope this helps.
November 14, 2017 – To keep up with new brands and changing technology, we’ve completely revamped our electric toothbrush review from 2015. This time around, we expanded our top picks from one to four to accommodate more budgets and levels of features. We also updated our methodology so that it’s consistent with current research on oral hygiene, and sent 16 toothbrushes home with a team of testers to get real-life feedback. Ultimately, we replaced our original top pick, the Oral-B 7000, with the more-streamlined Philips Sonicare 2, which is $25 cheaper and includes all the key features recommended by dentists to actually improve your brushing technique. If you’re in the market for an electric toothbrush that includes a similarly robust set of features as the Oral-B 7000, we recommend the Philips DiamondClean, which our testers found easier to maneuver, and comes with an intuitive, informative app.
We will promote the evolution of dental hygiene by exploring and implementing new methods and ideas. Mindfulness, awareness and presence practices are integrated for the development of emotional intelligence and the cultivation of compassionate, empathetic and professional behavior.
A nice perk of all Sonicare brushes, including the 2 Series, is that the brush heads come with a tiny plastic hood you can snap off and on to guard against the coliform sprays flying around one’s bathroom if you store your toothbrush in open air. The cap is easy to lose, but it’s a nice touch.
For the purpose of our reviews, we have considered the average toothbrush user who is motivated enough to brush his or her teeth twice a day for two minutes. Also, check out our top toothbrushes for people with braces, where we use slightly different criteria to define “best”.
And as far as cost goes, if you shop around a little bit you can probably find the least expensive of these brushes at a price only half again as much as the most expensive model we tend to consider a good value (the HealthyWhite+), thus making an almost reasonable buy.
Everyone develops plaque because bacteria are constantly growing in our mouths, so it is not easy to see. Plaque that is not removed from around the gum line can cause inflammation and irritation to the gums around your teeth.
Employment of dental hygienists is projected to grow 20 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for dental services will increase as the population ages and as research continues to link oral health to overall health.
We applied the same buying model to the Sonicare line and tried not to buy brushes that were differentiated only by their unnecessary features. We also bought one high-end brush, the DiamondClean, to assess if the cleaning experience was $120 better. It was not.

A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Dental Hygiene offers a more thorough introduction to the field of dental science by including two years of clinical experience into its curriculum. The clinical component of the degree will train students in oral health assessments, oral disease examination, oral cancer screening procedures and filling and periodontal dressing removal and placement. Some B.S. programs may cover topics such as the administration of anesthetics and dental filling material placement. Some courses address dental science theory and may include:
One thing worth pointing out about electric toothbrushes is that they are not cheaper in the long run. Electric toothbrushes cost about 10 times as much as manual toothbrushes, and you have to replace the brush heads at the same frequency (every three months), each for about the same cost as a manual brush. What you get for the higher cost is less friction in achieving good brushing habits, and, according to research, a significant reduction in plaque and gingivitis, even if that reduction may come only from having a brush that encourages good habits, like a full two minutes of brushing for each session.
The Oral-B Pro 1000 has a limited two-year warranty that requires the buyer to retain the receipt and ship the product to an authorized service center if it needs fixing. This is typical for a product in this price range and category.
So, I bought the Oral-B. I have used the app, and while it has some annoyances, the ability to track my toothbrushing habits is cool. I am a tech nerd after all. Reminders for flossing and mouthwash are on by default, but you can disable them. A suction mount to hold your phone on your bathroom mirror is included. I also like that you can setup the app to automatically order replacement brush heads through Amazon when the one you’re using at the end of its life. I found the overall noise to be more than tolerable, but there’s also usually music playing in my home no matter the hour.
To begin the search, we trawled the manufacturer websites of the highest-rated brands and looked at the recommendations of Consumer Reports and the Good Housekeeping Institute for toothbrush models as well as their replacement or substitution toothbrush heads, an important factor in choosing a best toothbrush.
In our quest to finding the top sonic toothbrush models, we came across Sterline – an up and coming dental hygiene brand. It is not easy to spot, because it does not have the same market shares as Philips or Oral-B, but it is definitely out there.
Brushing and flossing have the same oral hygiene goals but are inherently different. Even though a lot of toothbrush manufacturers like to claim that their products can readily replace string floss, this is often not the case.

This older Oral-B model is still available and still being manufactured. Thus, it comes with a two-year warranty and is about 4 times cheaper than Oral-B’s high tech 7000, 8000 and 9000 series. If you are looking to stay under $60, but still want an electric toothbrush, we highly recommend the Pro 1000 series.
However, you can Bass brush this surface if you use just the tip of your brush rather than try to fit the whole brush head laying on its side in your mouth.  Using just the front tip of your Bass brush, wiggle the bristles into the gum line along these few front teeth where it’s difficult to get the whole brush head angled correctly.
Carol, I hope you are feeling better. I’ll say a prayer for you but it’s already a year later so I hope you are doing well. I hear coconut oil and tumeric powder together are also good to brush your teeth with and leave on for 5 minutes, then brush teeth as normal. I do it once in a while, they say twice a week is good.
Survey participants wield an impressively varied skill set on the job. Most notably, skills in Pedodontics, dental hygienist, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, and Anesthesia are correlated to pay that is above average, with boosts between 3 percent and 6 percent. Skills that are correlated to lower pay, on the other hand, include Bilingual, Local Anesthesia, and Oral / Verbal Communication. Most people experienced in Patient Education also know Periodontics.
All you need to become a dental hygienist is an associate degree or certificate, so you can enter this in-demand career relatively quickly! Once you earn your licensure in the state in which you plan to work, you’ll be ready to begin your career as a dental hygienist.2
Brushing modes: Different brushing modes — like teeth whitening, gum massaging, and pro-cleaning — change the number of oscillations or vibrations per minute. However, we couldn’t find concrete evidence that these different modes were doing what they promised. In contrast, studies show that simply brushing for two minutes with proper technique, using effective toothpaste, and flossing will live up to the promise of better dental health.
Obviously in a market based economy professionals are going to protect their industry. The fact is that many of us grew up using baking soda, salt, and water. It is not harmful. This article is clearly for people looking for aesthetic help and confidence. Even if they have periodontal issues they may want to do this before going to get help as dentists can be very mean about the issue with clients. Let the people try it without scaring their money into your pockets.

As such this can lead to up to 10 times more plaque removal than a manual toothbrush along the gum line and between teeth.  Even the hardest to reach areas get a deep clean, that is still gentle on the gums.
The most significant thing about a powered toothbrush that might change over the course of its lifetime is the battery life; over the years, rechargeable batteries tend to lose capacity. In the case of a toothbrush, this might mean it becomes less powerful or not lasting as long while traveling.
To make things easier we have included below the links and product codes (shown in bold) to every type of Sonicare brush head available on Amazon at the time of writing. Overall, the three retailers we recommend checking out are:
The Philips Sonicare 2 Series is one of the least expensive brushes in Sonicare’s line, but still has a two-minute timer, rechargeable battery, and makes less noise than our Oral-B pick. This pick has a smaller range of brush textures and shapes, but they are all soft and serviceable.
Sonic toothbrushes have longer heads that resemble traditional toothbrushes and vibrate up to 40,000 strokes per minute. Dr. Glassman told us they also incorporate “fluid dynamics which is a secondary cleaning action that extends the brush’s reach.” Translation? A sonic toothbrush’s scrubbing can reach farther than its oscillating counterpart’s (even if it does tickle a bit on the way).
It is common for people to take their brushing very seriously, but then completely disregard the need to floss. As dental industry guidelines state, both are required for a high quality dental care routine. While brushing is great for getting at the surface of tooth enamel, a lot of debris and dirt accumulates in the corners. You simply cannot reach this with a regular brush.
In Australia it is a legal requirement for dental hygienists/ oral health therapist graduates to be registered with the Dental Board of Australia before practising their scope in periodontology in any state or territory in Australia.[19]
The Goby’s subscription can be set up to send new brush heads every one to three months. (Dentists recommend that you replace your brush every three months, so the more frequent options are not very necessary for a single user.) Amazon does offer subscription deliveries for its products, too, but only for Prime members. The replacement brush heads for the Goby cost $6 with $3 shipping, about the same as the 2 Series replacements and a little more expensive than the Oral-B’s heads.
As we have mentioned in the previous review article of the sonic toothbrushes, the sonic technology is based on the high-speed vibrations. Creating 30,000 strokes of the brush head each minute, it disrupts plaque and cleans the mouth to perfection.
Waterpik Sonic Toothbrush Sensonic Professional Plus (SR-3000) is from a newer brand and has a bulky base with grippy rubber panels, a single button, and smaller range of heads than Oral-B or Philips. This brush’s higher price gets you one extra cleaning mode, two extra battery level indicator lights, and a travel case. It claims to give better results by moving the brush head faster than Sonicare models do, but according to all the research we could find, faster doesn’t mean better.
Plaque and tartar both contribute to the development of decay and cavities. As tartar is porous, the plaque can build up inside and around it. It then calcifies around the plaque and bacteria. This traps all of the nasty stuff close to tooth enamel, where it can feast on and wear away teeth with harmful acids.
YOu might want to check the reviews on lifetime for a Sonicare. Their design tends to break after two years having to buy a new handset to use up the expensive replacement brushes you might have bouhg in a larger pack to save a little.
Clean your toothbrush holder once a week. Bacteria that accumulates on the toothbrush holder can be transmitted to the brush, and then to your mouth. It is particularly important to clean your holder regularly if it has a closed bottom, like a cup.[6]
Even so, the Sonicare is still engaging. The app comes with an interactive character named Sparkly and our tester’s parent “liked that it showed a teeth simulation my daughter could see while she brushed.” The Sonicare also managed to get our young tester excited about brushing her teeth the next morning. Her parent summed it up nicely: “I would recommend the Sonicare. It was just easier to use.”
You see, saliva is very mineral rich to help remineralize any surface decay on our teeth.  Since the lower front teeth come into contact with this rich source of minerals first, some of the minerals are deposited there first.

Someone’s sending me a Waterpik, if that makes any difference, and I’m searching for rinses that may help alleviate some of these problems. Thanks for the review, and for your help. Sorry this is so long.
!! This is an important point because despite what type your brush came with originally, you can switch to any other (style or size) head. That makes for a lot of options. (More information about brush heads.)
It’s easy enough to say that using a brush that has a more refined design (less noise, less handle vibration) makes for a more pleasant brushing experience. But how important those characteristics are for you to accomplish the act of brushing your teeth would simply be up to you.
The non-contact cleaning action of a Sonicare is dependent on the way it agitates the fluids surrounding the teeth. As such, you’d have to assume that lower-power setting creates a lesser non-contact cleaning effect. But whether this relationship curve is linear or exponential in shape, we don’t know.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises against using your dishwasher or microwave to disinfect toothbrushes. The CDC even includes ultraviolet devices on the list of things that may damage the toothbrush.
However, after spending $10 on a double edge safety razor instead of replacing my dead electric shaver, I decided to splurge and bought an Emmi-Dent Pro toothbrush. It actually is ultrasonic – you don’t brush! It’s by far the best electric toothbrush we’ve ever owned.
Design and features: We asked our testers to try the features of their toothbrushes to see which actually encouraged better brushing technique and which were all hype. For instance, the different brushing modes on the Jim Ellis seemed to differ mostly in sound. Our testers for other toothbrushes agreed that differences in brushing modes felt negligible and unnecessary. Some offered features that our testers found helpful, like how the Philips Sonicare 2 Series automatically shuts off after the two-minute timer to prevent over-brushing. Oral-B models will pulse to let you know your time is up, but they don’t turn off. Which means, if you miss the vibration, you can accidentally over-brush and damage your teeth and gums.

There is no proof that you even need to completely sanitize your toothbrush. So you may skip this step if you want to. If you are a little paranoid and just want to ensure that your toothbrush stays clean then sanitize it in solution about once a week.
Hi, I am currently a high school student who is interested in pursuing the career of a dental hygienist. I wanted to know if there are any health benefits with this career for example retirement benefits, paid vacations, medical benefits ect..?

Need to brush using a SOFT toothbrush in a slow motion for at least 2 minutes (making sure to not use too much pressure or brush too fast). Please learn how to properly brush and floss (unfortunately many people do not know how). As far as mouthwash, I personally like to use 2 different types, Listerine and Act or Plax. Listerine is great & I have great results with patients, but it can be too harsh to use more than once a day. Most think Listerine burns, which it does when first using it. Dilute it with water 50/50 and every few days increase the Listerine part…… it will ease you into its use.
The Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush is a top notch toothbrush by Philips. It’s the most advanced and the top rated Sonicare toothbrush with a very stylish design that would appeal to any gadget lover. For different preferences, it’s available in black and white colors.

There may well be one better suited to you, which you can decide upon based on the information provided below. We explain all the different Philips Sonicare Sonic brush heads in detail on this page and make it easier for you to understand which brush head to opt for.

A 2014 study published in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology notes that an herbal mouth rinse containing clove, tea tree oil and basil reduced the microbial colony forming units, making it an effective antiplaque and antigingivitis agent.
We’ve been using quip for a months now and after replacing the brush head, one of the two brushes has stopped working and the other developed a crack. So far, we’re not impressed and probably going to switch to the Oral B
The American Dental Association has a set of criteria to give products its Seal of Acceptance. Many products don’t seek this certification, but a product can’t receive the recognition unless the ADA has independently verified and approved its claims. In 2017, Oral-B became the first electric toothbrush brand to receive the ADA seal, with five series of the Oscillating-Rotating-Pulsating Power Toothbrush receiving the seal. However, the only factors that the ADA has found necessary to mouth health are brushing for two minutes with a reasonably soft brush and using proper technique.
This page does accomplish that goal, using those sources. And while performing our comparison process the information we collected allowed us to form a distinct opinion about which features are important to have versus those that seem to offer just limited value.
The Aura Clean Orbital Facial Brush comfortably cleanses using powerful rotational technology more capable than manual washing. Its spinning motion, combined with the silky soft bristles thoroughly sweep through pores to safely dislodge dirt, dead skin cells and make-up residues. The Aura Clean Base Station keeps the brush head protected, clean and away from environmental contaminants and also dries the brush head while charging – allowing the brush ready for use when you are.
Eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks can help prevent tooth decay and periodontal disease.[citation needed] The Fédération dentaire internationale (FDI World Dental Federation) has promoted foods such as raw vegetables, plain yogurt, cheese, or fruit as dentally beneficial—this has been echoed by the American Dental Association (ADA).[39]

It is easy to think that you need specialist brushes and they do exist.  However with a Sonicare electric toothbrush you can use any of the brush heads safely with braces, you do not need a special brush head.
95% of the dental plaque harbored on the enamel samples was removed if the contact between the sonic toothbrush and the enamel surface was for a duration of at least 5 seconds. If the contact time was 10 seconds or longer, essentially all of the dental plaque was removed.
In my experience they are just as bad in terms of reliability, I’ve bought five of these 1000 series brushes in the last four years. That said, I still feel like they’re the best toothbrush out there for the money. Without user replaceable batteries, these things just inevitably die.

I’m starting to suspect that the strong, oscillating movements of the Oral-B may be contributing to the problem. I had a Sonicare a million years ago, and I don’t remember it being so hard on my gums. Would switching back help, or should I get a more expensive Oral-B? I have a very small mouth, so I can’t tolerate large brush heads. I liked the Quadpacer feature, because I really do need to be reminded to brush uniformly.
Studies linking oral health and general health, and efforts to expand access to oral hygiene services, will continue to drive the demand for preventive dental services. As a result, the demand for all dental services, including those performed by hygienists, will increase. In addition, demand for dental hygienists is expected to grow as state laws increasingly allow dental hygienists to work at the top of their training, and they effectively become more productive.
During the research process, we spoke with several experts on the subject of dentistry, including dental school faculty at leading research universities, a professional dentist, and a consumer advisor appointed by the American Dental Association (ADA), which confers a Seal of Acceptance on dental care products that seek the certification and meet a set of agreed-upon criteria.
All the big names in electric toothbrushes sell a variety of brush heads that work with their brushes. Along with standard brush heads, you’ll find brush heads for sensitive teeth, orthodontic work, extra whitening, extra plaque removal, and many others.
“I cannot recommend this toothbrush enough. I have sensitive gums, so the three intensity levels are a nice feature. It also does an excellent job of plaque removal. You’ll still need to floss, but there won’t be much left at all, as seen by using plaque-disclosing tabs. The most noticeable difference is the whitening effect, too. I dipped for 11 years, and it had taken a toll on my teeth. This brush has definitely made a difference in that department. I’ll see if I can get dentist pics and update this later, but it’s really been huge. The design of the brush allows it to stay much cleaner than a lot of other electric brushes I’ve had in the past, too, which is nice. No nasty surprises when replacing heads, and it comes with a nice travel case as well. Highly recommended.”
Like an associate’s degree, you’ll have to complete prerequisite coursework for a bachelor’s program. While many of your classes—dental anatomy, radiology, dental materials—will be the same whether you earn an associate’s or bachelor’s, the latter will allow you to dig deeper into the profession.
We have to assume that these numbers represent the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). But on more than one occasion we found online retailers displaying a higher “listed” price (which makes their “discounted” price look better).
This model offers the standard quad pacer feature that breaks down your brushing routine into four 30-second cycles. This is to help you achieve even and well-controlled brushing. At around $30, this is the most effective and affordable toothbrush on the market.
The Oral-B Genius 8000 can track the brush’s position in your mouth, thanks to on-board location sensors and access to your phone’s front-facing camera. (For more on our experience with the Genius, see “Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 Review: Who Needs a Smart Toothbrush?”) Smart capabilities aside, the brush itself, like our pick, is a reliable tool. Like other models in the Oral-B line, it has more cleaning modes than necessary and is compatible with any of the company’s replacement heads. And like the Pro 3000, the Genius has an on-board pressure sensor that flashes red when you brush too hard (no app necessary). If you travel with an electric toothbrush, you’ll appreciate the included case, which can charge the brush handle and a phone. Still, unless you find that being “watched” helps motivate you to thoroughly brush regions in your mouth you’d usually miss, you could spend half the cost of this brush for another habit-tracking smart model, such as the Pro 3000, or less than a quarter of the cost for an equally great clean with our pick.

Baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate, is a great home remedy for removing plaque. It neutralizes acids in the mouth, thereby reducing the amount of harmful bacteria. It also helps whiten and brighten your pearly whites.
(c)This is a very old method used by people in Africa, chew some sesame seeds then brush your teeth the oil in the seed are known to break down tartar. Not many people are allergic sesame seeds so be careful.
The Easy Clean and Sonicare 2 were introduced as “middle” range models, they were never “top” ones. The Essence above is Sonicare’s older design (although a “top” model in its day) and we’d expect it to be the noisiest of all those listed on this page.
If you just want to dive in and grab the best product for the job, then you really can’t go wrong with the ones below. Or if you want to understand a bit more about how they work, jump to the explanation below.

We love that you’re thinking of your future career so early, Emily! If teeth and dental work are something you enjoy and have a passion for, a career in dental hygiene could be a great choice for you. Every job will have pros and cons, like this article mentions, but don’t let that stop you from achieving your dream career!
With a speed of up to 62,000 brush strokes per minute, the DiamondClean is certainly the Speedy Gonzales of electric toothbrushes. Beautifully designed, this model is available in a variety of colors, such as black, white, dark purple, amethyst and pink. Yes, that is correct ladies, you can have this toothbrush match the rest of your bathroom accessories. Gentleman, do not be jealous! There is plenty of choice for you as well.
Using Magnesium oil sprayed onto your toothbrush instead of toothpaste will remove calcium deposits, remove fluoride damage, re-build enamel and whiten teeth…although not whiten as effectively as baking soda.
You use a vibrating sonic toothbrush, like the Philips Sonicare, the same way you do a manual toothbrush – by brushing in circular motions to reach all your teeth. There is some evidence that suggests vibrating brushes can clean areas where others can’t. The vibrations help dislodge plaque and send water and toothpaste into areas that other electric brushes may not reach. Users of sonic brushes often report that their mouth feels cleaner, which is a benefit itself.
We realize that one minute of brushing time goes against the two-minute rule we set forth, but for kids’ toothbrushes, there’s good reason. The Sonicare’s gentle brushing mode starts off with a one minute timer which gradually increases to two minutes the more times your child brushes. So rather than suddenly asking kids to brush for two minutes, the toothbrush helps ease them into longer brushing sessions — an important feature when considering the call of Saturday morning cartoons. After all, a kids’ toothbrush is most effective when it helps them build better brushing habits at an impressionable age. If you want to skip the gradual timer and start out at two minutes, you can. The Sonicare for Kids give parents the option to choose the approach that best helps their child learn to brush properly.
Brio is still considered a novice within the oral health industry. But, that has not halted the company from experiencing a quick growth and amassing a serious and loyal base of followers. Their responsive and hassle-free customer service, as well as their competitive product, have also earned them a place in our top 7 list.
I would suggest something other than Phillips. Paid over $100.00 BJ’s, and after 7 months the charger stopped working. You would think they would want you to continue to use their product and offer a replacement charger, but you have to buy another at an approx $30.00 cost with shipping. By the way customer service is not too friendly. Need to buy 2 more brushes and will buy another brand.
There are two brands that dominate the electric toothbrush market: Oral-B, known for its oscillating brushes, and Philips Sonicare, famous for sonic brushes. We scoured best-of lists from sites like Engadget and Dental Dorks, and consumer reviews on Amazon to find the most highly-rated toothbrushes from each brand. We made sure to include brushes spanning a wide range of features and price points. We also brought in their most popular options suitable for young children — colorful, easy-to-hold brushes that play songs. To see if some lesser-known brands could compete with the two industry giants, we also included top-rated toothbrushes from some aspiring industry disrupters, like Foreo, Greater Goods and Jim Ellis.
Floss between your teeth. Flossing is an essential component of effective oral hygiene, though unfortunately it is often neglected. Flossing removes bacteria and food particles from between the teeth, helping to prevent the formation of plaque. It should be done once a day, at bedtime, before brushing your teeth. Floss between teeth using a gentle sawing motion, and lifting the floss along the sides of the teeth. Avoid “snapping” the floss into place, as this can irritate the delicate gum tissue.
Dental hygienists will clean a patient’s teeth, removing tartar, stains and plaque as they brush, floss and scrape. Dental hygienists are also involved in educating patients on the best ways to brush and floss teeth, as well as which products to use.
This enzyme can help to strengthen the walls of the arteries and cleans out plaque. Some is made in the body and foods containing CoQ10 are lean meats, canola oil, and broccoli, cauliflower and CoQ10 supplements.
In addition, I tried the generic Oral-B replacement brushes a few years ago and they were TERRIBLE. At least one fell apart as I was using it, and my cheek got caught in the little hole in the back of another. Not sure if the replacements have gotten better since then, but it’s made me reluctant to try.
Lifespan – Much like anything else in life, and especially modern day technology, these devices also eventually seize to work. Battery life is the number one reason for electric toothbrush “deaths”. Regrettably, battery-powered toothbrushes are designed in such a way so their batteries cannot be replaced. So, when the battery fails, you will need to purchase a new one.
The “ad hominem attack” is yours, claiming I said “it feels cleaner to me” when I said no such thing. My checkups are better, as suspected from the way my teeth feel, but I don’t use “it feels cleaner to me” as evidence.
There is no proof that you even need to completely sanitize your toothbrush. So you may skip this step if you want to. If you are a little paranoid and just want to ensure that your toothbrush stays clean then sanitize it in solution about once a week.
Avoid brushing with pressure when you use baking soda as toothpaste. Also, do not use baking soda for more than five days in a row because it is abrasive and may damage your tooth enamel if you use it too often.
Otherwise, you’re basically saying, “this one works better for me, for the things that I like,” i.e. it makes your mouth feel cleaner (to which I will add that you’ve provided no evidence other than “it feels cleaner to me”). That is great for you if that’s what you care most about. I think most people would prefer the brush with clinical evidence backing it up.
This can be a very strange experience, because the dentist moves in close and uses a special scraping instrument to, literally, force the plaque from the teeth. They tend to focus particularly hard on areas where the tarter has begun to form calcified spots. These can be seen a little white or yellow marks on the outer surface of the enamel.
Exactly! They Never give you any remedies, only charge, charge, charge, Went yesterday to a dentist and she took her metal tool and tapped my abscessed tooth so hard I had to go to the hospital in pain, no compassion just a quick assessment to see what I needed and what they would charge to do it. And off I went with antibiotics and pain pills. Hope some of these natural remedies work. I am in horrible pain from my head ears, throat, jaw, and very sick. I feel dizzy and feel my heart racing. I am really worried.
We’ve started a Kickstarter project after reading this news. It’s called Brushield. Anti-microbial aluminum toothbrush case. And it protects your toothbrush from many external threats. Including toilet germs. Check it out if you don’t like to brush your teeth with germs and etc. kck.st/1Ow1Nch

Electric toothbrushes offer a good solution to this. They are not only fun to use, but they also employ the correct brush movements that our hands often tend to disregard when we clean our teeth manually.
Microwaves and dishwashers are pretty effective at killing bacteria. For instance, the microwave produces radiation while the dishwasher uses soap and hot water to get the job done. Similarly soaking your brush in mouthwash or white vinegar will help. As will rubbing just one drop of Dental Pro 7 into the bristles of your brush.
What a good recipe – natural and easily affordable! It’s a very good way to use your toothbrush longer. Is it a good idea to add lemon juice or vodka? They are also used for disinfection. Thank you for sharing this useful information with us! Greets!
Toothbrushes are a fertile breeding ground for a number of strains of viruses and bacteria including the ones that cause the common cold and influenza.  For this reason, the National Dental Association suggests that you replace your toothbrush every three months and clean it thoroughly at least once a week.  Here are a few ways to do that:
You also only get two options in terms of replacing brush heads: the Standard and Compact size from the e-Series. This is due to the older brush attachment technology that this sonic toothbrush model uses. Namely, you need to screw-on and off the brush head, rather than snap it on and off.
Designed to reach deep between teeth and into hard to reach areas the InterClean brush heads feature extra-long, high-density bristles to target hidden plaque caught deep between teeth and in other hard-to-clean areas.
Yes I do, and I laid them out already: it’s a biased set of studies, performed by a biased panel, deliberately constrained to a extremely confined audience of one “special issue” of one publication. The methods and procedures are laid out by the revelation of the authors, their backers, and the publication. It makes the entire analysis suspect. You ARE taking their data at their word, you know.
These heads screw-on rather than snap in place (the only model in our Best list to use this type). This design tends to accumulate gunk and makes the brush slightly less convenient to use if it’s shared. [More details.]
I have owned my toothbrush for four years. In fact, I bought this product in 2012 for $31 and am only reviewing it now! It looks like the price went down a bit since I bought it. Since then, I have obviously bought many other replacements since $31 is expensive in comparison.
This is great! I used to boil water and put my toothbrush in there for awhile, but these methods seem much better. Wish I would have known about them BEFORE I got my self-sanitizing one! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Overall though, this is a great little addition to our overall dental care hygiene. I purchased this during a Black Friday sale for a great price. Should that price re-emerge, I’ll purchase a second one.
There were a few things we didn’t like about it, though. First, it doesn’t switch off after two minutes — it simply pulses, meaning there’s a risk of missing the buzz and over-brushing. That said, if you like the chance to go over a tooth or two at the end of your clean, this may not bother you. It’s also pretty loud and, like oscillating brushes in general, can be harsh on the gums. One of our testers told us, “the Oral-B felt like a power tool while the Sonicare felt like a toothbrush.” The Oral-B also has a narrow handle which our small-handed tester didn’t mind, but if you have bigger hands or arthritis, you may find the larger handle of the Sonicare 2 Series easier to maneuver.

Obstructive sleep apnea linked to higher Alzheimer’s risk Severe obstructive sleep apnea is associated with higher levels of amyloid beta, the peptide involved in cerebral plaque buildup in Alzheimer’s disease. Read now

We found the downfall of the 7000 model in its NiMH battery. When brushing twice a day, while connected to the app, the battery only lasted for 8 days. Compared to other similar toothbrushes, this is not cool, to say the least. Especially when it takes 24 hours to fully charge the battery.

Being a hygienist….has it’s tough days and easy days. LEARNING to become a hygienist is actually one of the most difficult programs you can go through – not in a stuck up way, but I have always been in honors courses throughout highschool and college, and studied 3 years for a double major before discovering and switching into hygiene. It is no joke – at least the program I was in. They only accepted 3.8GPA or higher and required pre-reqs.
At BestReviews, we never accept free products or perks from manufacturers in exchange for a good review. We do our own research, speak with experts in the field, and listen to feedback from actual customers. That allows us to give you unbiased, accurate recommendations and shopping advice.
For proper dental care, it’s important to practice dental hygiene, such as regular brushing, flossing and other. But it’s just as important to have a proper brushing technique. We hope that our guide will help you with how to brush with Sonicare toothbrush properly. Brushing with an electric toothbrush, you should remember that only light pressure is required. If you press too hard, it will not make it more effective but can damage your teeth. Sonic toothbrushes are highly effective. Many dentists also recommend them as the best electric toothbrushes. Some of the top Sonicare models include Sonicare DiamondClean, Sonicare FlexCare, and Sonicare FlexCare Plus, Sonicare Series 2 HX6211.
Oscillating toothbrushes have round heads that rotate back and forth and average 7,500-8,000 strokes per minute. They are less likely to cause the characteristic “teeth-tickling” sensation of sonic models, but are generally louder and can cause discomfort for those with sensitive gums.
“The Sonicare toothbrush is a workhorse. There’s no doubt about that. If you inspect the back of your teeth, you can usually see a small layer of plaque. Well, the Sonicare toothbrush is your answer to the best at home cleaning, after about two days of brushing, my teeth were noticeably cleaner. My colleagues were asking me if I whitened my teeth lol. I can never go back to a manual toothbrush. 32,000 brush strokes a minute, think about that. If you care about how your teeth look, then this is a great investment.”
Aloe Vera is on par with mouthwash when it comes to banishing bad breath and getting rid of plaque. It is also antimicrobial which means that is an effective method for killing harmful bacteria in your mouth before it causes a problem. Slit open an aloe vera leaf and extract the pulp. If you don’t have an aloe vera plant, you can purchase Aloe vera gel at most health food stores or even from this page on Amazon. Apply the paste directly to your teeth and gum line, being sure to rub it in well. Leave on for 10-15 minutes and rinse your mouth with cold water, brush regularly. Repeat twice daily for best results.
Keep your toothbrush away from the toilet. Most people will often place their brushes by the toilet. It has been found that some bacteria become airborne during flushing. You don’t want that on your brush!
Hard cheese like Swiss or cheddar helps your body produce alkaline saliva, an important component that fights back against plaque bacteria. It even creates a protective layer around your teeth to prevent acid build up and can remineralize teeth with calcium and phosphates.
My recent order arrived. The replacement brushes are so short they look like they have been cut back to the plastic head. If I use them it will be hard plastic on my teeth. I don’t know what happened to these replacement heads. I’m sending them back.
While home remedies should never be used as a substitute for proper dental treatment, there are some methods that have proved very effective. The following section will outline some of these methods in more detail.
normally, you soak in vinegar to disinfect, then use baking soda to turn it into water after it has been disinfected.. then the water can evaporate nicely and leaves no vinegar smell. awesome for furniture. i wouldn’t do it on my toothbrush.
I used to use a rotating brush and graduated to a Sonicare. No comparison. The small brush simply didn’t clean as well. Could you paint as effectively with a small brush as you could with a big one? The smaller brush simply doesn’t have the same amount of coverage in the same amount of time. I’ve had no problem getting into tight areas with my larger brush. It’s the same as with a manual brush.
We’d be of the impression that at least a part of what you mention is a reference to Sonicare’s rating of the brush head that comes with the Diamond Clean as compared to the Easy Clean’s ProResults head. Those are the exact numbers (7x vs 2x) that are stated on the Sonicare website for those respective heads.
Empathy The dentist’s chair makes many uneasy – especially young children. Being able to show empathy and help patients take their mind off of receiving medical care goes a long way in easing fears and worries.
All Oral-B rechargeable models – A comprehensive review of the features/prices of all of the current Oral-b rechargeable models. Some comparisons between each of the individual toothbrush lines are made.
Add to that the fact that most dental HMO’s require that dental offices do hygiene for “no copay” (HMO speak for “free”) hygiene becomes very difficult. A hygienist is expected to produce 3 times as much in billing as she gets paid. It is rather hard to do this with the waiting room packed with patients anxious to get their nocopy cleanings.
Almost all accredited dental hygiene programs minimally offer an associate degree in science or an associate degree in applied science. Applicants to an associate degree granting institution usually complete mandatory pre-requisite coursework prior to beginning the dental hygiene program. Graduates of a four-year college or university are granted a baccalaureate degree in dental hygiene.

It is possible that you can use any of the Sonicare brush heads with the sensitive cleaning mode on Sonicare brush handles but the clean and experience may not be as enjoyable if you suffer from sensitive gums.
We’d trust WaterPik to make a quality electric toothbrush. As compared to Sonicare you are more limited in brush head styles. However, the small pointed Interdental Tip is a design not duplicated in the Sonicare line and could be a valuable aid for some.
Electric toothbrushes on the whole aren’t exactly known for their ruggedness and longevity (at least not nowadays). So in an era of lowest-possible-cost manufacturing and planned-obsolescence product design, both initial and replacement costs should be factors that are considered.
Even though these toothbrushes are electric, they provide the gentle brushstroke motion. This gentle motion ensures that your sonicare toothbrush will be safe to use with braces or if you have particularly sensitive gums or teeth. The brush head itself is angled so that you can get better access to the teeth in the back of your mouth. When you make brushstrokes, you can be sure that all of your teeth will be clean.
It has Clean mode (the one we feel is most important to have), and has the added flexibility of 3 brushing “intensities” (high intensity being the one we would use). It seems likely that the 3 Series is intended to replace the EasyClean in the Sonicare line up.
Run your toothbrush through the dishwasher. You wash other plastic utensils in the dishwasher, so washing your toothbrush should be safe. If you are worried about it melting, however, make sure to wash it on a lower heat setting.
