Prerequisites for an associate’s degree include a high school diploma and minimum education requirements in major subject areas. ACT or SAT scores may be required. Bachelor’s degree programs require a high school diploma or equivalent, or an associate’s degree in dental hygiene; ACT or SAT scores are required, and schools of dentistry may also request letters of recommendation. Both associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs require intensive clinical components, such as hours of hands-on experience in a healthcare setting.
No matter what toothpaste or mouthwash you use, it will be hard to have fresh breath and good oral health if the toothbrush you use is overrun with bacteria, mold, and decaying food particles. A clean toothbrush that is in good condition is essential for good oral hygiene and in killing the germs that cause bad breath. There are a lot of myths and ideas that surround how to store and keep your toothbrush clean from bacteria and other particles such as storing your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible and in a closed container. Some of these are important and effective in sustaining proper health, while others are unnecessary, not worth the time, or are just plain too expensive. In this article we will discuss proven methods that will keep your toothbrush clean and in optimum working performance and also discuss why other methods may be too much work for too little results.
(a) You can use with a Waterpik (this is the most effective method) which I will discuss later in this post. Periogen is in a powder form you can add one to two scoop in the Waterpik reservoir depending on the thickness of the tartar. Use warm water which will make cleaning easier on your gum.Apply for two to three week for full results.

Do not be worried that you need to use them all to target different areas of the mouth.  You can still have white teeth, healthy gums and reduced plaque by using the DiamondClean head.  Using the Sensitive brush head may improve your experience but will not mean that your teeth are more stained because it does not aggravate the tooth surface as much.
These are great replacement toothbrush head for my Sonicare brush handle. I was using the oem brush head from sonicare for the past 2 years until I realized that there were cheaper alternatives online. I decided to give these a try and they function the exact same as the sonicare ones.Out of the box, the brush heads come with all the colored rings and brush head covers like the real ones do.
The toothbrush has five modes – Gum Care, Deep Clean, Clean, White and Sensitive, in order of strongest to weakest. Gum Care, the strongest mode, can be as loud as 78-80 db, just loud enough to be heard through a wall. To switch modes, you have to have the toothbrush running, which we found inconvenient.
The Interdental Tip brush heads are unlike any offered by Sonicare. They are ultra-small and their pointed nature makes them useful for brushing between teeth or hard to reach locations. (The Oral-B Pulsonic offers this type of brush head too.)
“So satisfied with this electric toothbrush: It’s my favorite fancy-pink color, has a super-amazing design, and is very convenient to use. It has a very powerful cleaning system. After brushing, my teeth feel so clean, and it can effectively improve gum and oral health. Great product!”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises against using your dishwasher or microwave to disinfect toothbrushes. The CDC even includes ultraviolet devices on the list of things that may damage the toothbrush.
I really like this system- seems to clean my teeth better than other brushes- also like the pause that lets you know you have cleaned one side long enough- this helps in not doing a sloppy job of cleaning. I have tried several other power toothbrushes and this is my favorite. I would say definitely worth the price. And this is an independent review – no samples for me!!
not true for all areas. I live in a small town with lots of dental offices. the office I work at now we have hygienists working part time (24hr/week) and making $78,000/year. plus they get vacation time sick time holiday pay and yearly bonuses.
Dental hygienists in Australia must be graduates from a dental hygiene program, with either an advanced diploma (TAFE), associate degree, or more commonly a bachelor’s degree from a dental hygiene school that is accredited by the Australian Dental Council (ADC).[18]
Featuring a rubber moulding on the back of the brush head for safer, more pleasant cleaning. Both will help remove more plaque than a manual toothbrush, but the larger brush head used by children aged 7+ can remove as much as 7 times more.
“If you don’t have that bacteria, that’s when opportunist microorganisms like yeast and fungi take over,” Dr. Kahn says. “You want a certain amount of natural bacteria in your mouth (just not around the teeth or gum tissue).” Instead of trying to sterilize your toothbrush, make a habit of replacing it regularly, she says.
The American Dental Association’s (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) serves as the sole accrediting body for dental hygiene programs in the United States. There are currently 330 CODA-accredited dental hygiene programs throughout the country.
Some of the downfalls to practicing in different provinces are the different regulations. For instance, in BC, the hygienist cannot provide treatment without the patient receiving a dental exam in the previous 365 days unless the practicing hygienist has an extended duty module (resident-care module). In AB, BC, MB and SK, hygienists also administer local anesthesia if qualified to do so.[6][7][8][9] In Ontario, dental hygienists may take further training to become a restorative dental hygienist. Registered dental hygienists must register every year by December 31. Ontario dental hygienists must also prove continuing competence by maintaining a professional portfolio yearly. In Ontario, dental hygienists are registered with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO). [23]
The Pro 1000 is rated to last for seven days of brushing sessions on one charge; in our real-world testing, it lasted for 11½ days, which is average for a brush in this price range. Like the more expensive models we tested, the brush survived its drop test, fits in its charging cradle well, and can switch out brush heads easily. Oral-B changes the name of this brush about once a year, but functionally the entire series remains pretty much the same.
Vitamin D3 is essential for bone and immune system health. The main source of the vitamin, which is made in the skin, is sunshine. Deficiencies may occur during winter months or in those who are indoors most of the time, such as people with Alzheimer’s disease.
I finally decided to board the Sonicare train and thought I just have to go to Amazon, click on “Sonicare”, and buy one. Who knew there were so many different models? I despaired of ever figuring out which ones had which features until I found this site. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We’d also suggest (although it’s just conjecture on our part) that Sonicare technology of yesteryear carried forward (which is what this brush represents) may offer design and build-quality advantages over newer “economy” models (2 Series, 3 Series) that seem to have only been designed as cheaper Sonicare alternatives.
The powerful motor drives a high-frequency and high-amplitude brush movements to perform over 31,000 strokes per minute.  The result is the power fully extends from the brush handle all the way to the tip of the brush head.
The first independent non-military training began in 1994.[12] Otago Polytechnic began offering a 15-month Certificate in Dental Hygiene in Dunedin.[12] In 1998, the programme was modified to be a 2-year Diploma.[12] Otago Polytech stopped offering the course in 2000.[12] The following year, University of Otago began offering a 2-year Diploma in Dental Hygiene qualification.[12] In 2002, the university added a 3-year Bachelor of Health Sciences (endorsed in Dental Hygiene) degree alongside the Diploma.[12] This course was discontinued in 2007, when the current 3 year Bachelor of Oral Health commenced.[12]

Powered toothbrushes versus regular brushes – powered toothbrushes are fun and may remove more plaque than regular toothbrushes. Regular toothbrushes work fine, but powered toothbrushes make brushing easier.

Plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth is basically inevitable. Even if you brush and floss regularly, it still happens. As stains, dirt, grime, and old food build up on your teeth, it feeds naturally occurring oral bacteria that secrete acids that cause enamel demineralization.

Toothbrushes are a fertile breeding ground for a number of strains of viruses and bacteria including the ones that cause the common cold and influenza.  For this reason, the National Dental Association suggests that you replace your toothbrush every three months and clean it thoroughly at least once a week.  Here are a few ways to do that:
For example, have you ever hit an object with a baseball bat, or a hammer, and had it be surprisingly painful when the impulse was transmitted back to your hand through the handle? In a case like that, the movement in the handle is almost nothing but its particular frequency and amplitude is enough to transmit energy effectively. Tool manufacturers go to some effort to diminish these feedbacks.
There are few things as natural and as healthy as water. You should be drinking around eight glasses of it every day anyway, so this tip should really only be a reminder. If you drink plenty of water, it will wash away plaque, dirt, and debris before it gets a chance to take a hold on the surface of tooth enamel.
After sorting through the dental care research, which is littered with (unusable) clinical studies sponsored by the companies that make the toothbrushes being tested, we’ve learned that all you really need out of an electric toothbrush is a two-minute timer to make sure you brush your teeth for the right amount of time. Manufacturers have blown up the high end with scientific-sounding “features” like cleaning modes and UV lights; nothing proves these other features work, let alone that they are necessary (see The features you don’t need). All an electric toothbrush can really offer is automation of the brushing process by adding a timer and easing some of the physical labor, according to the professors and dentist we spoke to.

Omega 3 fatty acids are fats commonly found in marine and plant oils. They are considered essential fatty acids, meaning that they cannot be synthesized in the body but are vital for healthy metabolism. They are thought to play an important role in reducing inflammation throughout the body.
Dr. Katia Friedman, dentist and owner of Friedman Dental Group, explained that, “When we brush by hand, we average about 300 strokes per minute, which isn’t bad. But electric toothbrushes can average up to 31,000 to 40,000 strokes per minute. One of the main benefits of the vibrations or oscillations is that it cleans your teeth more thoroughly — it eliminates plaque and bacteria better than a manual toothbrush due to the increased number of strokes that it provides.”
Thanks. That’s a good tip but I’m talking about 3 to 4 years (the normal lifespan of the battery, not a faulty one) and and the mechanism is good for way more than that. That makes it unnecessarily disposable and therefore an environmental bad.
And finally, snacking on aged cheeses (like Swiss or cheddar) can be a great way to neutralize the acids that accumulate right after meals. As these acids are what contribute to plaque build ups, you now have a perfectly valid excuse to be indulging your penchant for fine fromages. According to scientists, there is an element in aged cheese that acts as a buffering agent and a barrier for plaque. You can also find the same element in peanuts and sesame seeds.
Dental hygienists are an important part of dentist-led teams. Their work removes a considerable burden from the dentist, freeing up the dentist to perform more advanced procedures. Therefore, it is quite common for dental hygienists to perform many of the preventive dental procedures in an office, such as teeth cleaning and fluoride application.
It is easy to think that you need specialist brushes and they do exist.  However with a Sonicare electric toothbrush you can use any of the brush heads safely with braces, you do not need a special brush head.
Did you see the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”? The father of the bride was always running around with a bottle of windex and using it for everything. Well, I’m like that with vinegar. I keep some in a spray bottle and use it for disinfecting and cleaning lots of things. I also spritz some vinegar on my toothbrush every night. But I’ve been wondering about the acidity… you’re not supposed to brush your teeth right away after eating or drinking something acidic because the acid softens the enamel on your teeth. So what about spraying my toothbrush with vinegar, would the acidity be neutralized after it dries overnight?
“My favorite toothbrush is, by far, the Sonicare toothbrush,” says Laurence Grayhills, president-elect of the Florida Acadamy of General Dentistry in Wellington, Florida. “It oscillates back and forth at a frequency of about 20,000 cycles per second (that’s faster than I can do with my hand and manual toothbrush). While most toothbrushes require mechanical contact with the tooth surface to remove plaque, the Sonicare operates at such a high frequency that it creates a cavitational force that blasts plaque off the teeth without actually touching the tooth. There are a variety of brush-heads for various applications, which increases the versatility of the device. It has a built-in quadrant timer so that people use the device for the recommended brushing time.”
However, if you prefer a larger brush, the Deep Sweep has performed favorably to Sonicare brushes in clinical studies: http://www.dentalcare.com/media/en-US/research_db/pdf/products/8week-eval-benefits-multidirectional.pdf

As you may expect, much of a dental hygienist’s job requires working with people’s mouths, and it’s possible that you will come into contact with the occasional patient who has bad breath, swollen gums or tooth decay.
The Dental Hygienists’ Association of Australia (DHAA) Inc., established in 1975, is the peak body representing registered dental hygiene service providers in Australia. A dental hygienist does not need to be employed by a dentist but can independently assess patients and make treatment plans within their scope of practice whilst working in the community. Practising as an autonomous decision maker, and working within the scope of only what they are “formally” trained in. The National Law requires the same level of professional responsibility from dental hygienists, oral health therapists and dental therapists as it does from dentists, dental specialists and dental prosthetists in that all practitioners must have their own professional indemnity insurance and radiation licences. They are also required to complete 60 hours of mandatory continuing professional development in a three-year cycle.[20][21]
I have been using the phillips sonicare tooth brush for almost 5 years. I found out how pricey the replacement brushes are the first time I ran out. Luckily Amazon has competitive prices and I was able to buy them here for a lower reasonable price. These brushes last a good amount of time, but be mindful of cleaning out the inside of the brush casing. Since water and toothpaste can run down the brush, after a while it will build up so you should be sure to rinse it under warm water to be sure to clean the inside out too. I have purchased four packs of 2 replacement brushes (soft) and I have had no problems with it. I would definitely purchase it again.
At any rate, after reading someone else’s review that made the claim that this replacement head would fit the older base, I decided to give them a try and found that the reviewer was right. It was such a relief, because I love my Sonicare, and those old-style replacement heads were becoming difficult to find; and when I did find them, they were outlandishly priced.
The best electric toothbrushes for Senior Citizens. – Elder persons in different age groups, with differing situations, need different features. This page discusses the pros and cons of various models in meeting those needs.
If you have braces — pay attention to the heads selection. I grabbed a pack of round “floss action” ones, but turned out instruction explicitly recommends against using them with braces. Specialized heads for braces seem to not be available around here, so I guess I’ll stick with “default” ones for now.
When it comes to keeping gums healthy, flossing is only part of the story. Gentle gum cleaning stimulates and rejuvenates them by improving circulation. With Philips Sonicare, you could see your gum health improve in just two weeks¹. Team up your gum care electric toothbrush with the AdaptiveClean brush head; this adapts to the contours of your gums and teeth for a deep but gentle clean.
While you’ll learn dental hygiene techniques and procedures, a dental hygiene associate’s degree will help you better understand basic and dental sciences. During the course of your studies, you’ll learn how to make decisions about patient care, hone your critical thinking skills and improve your problem-solving abilities.
Security: The services that dental hygienists provide are needed and valued by a large percentage of the population. There is currently a great demand for dental hygienists. Employment opportunities will be excellent well into the future. Due to the success of preventive dentistry in reducing the incidence of oral disease, the expanding older population will retain their teeth longer, and will be even more aware of the importance of regular dental care. With the emphasis on preventive care, dentists will need to employ more dental hygienists than ever before to meet the increased demand for dental services.
The Sonicare 2 and 3 Series toothbrushes don’t fit that mold. These models were introduced as “cheaper alternatives,” evidently to cover specific price points in the line up. And it seems that their design, as mentioned above, tends to reflect that.
Oil pulling is an age-old practice that supports oral health and helps remove plaque from teeth. Extra-virgin coconut oil is great for oil pulling because it is high in lauric acid that has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.
A full review of the patient’s medical history to identify the patient’s systemic health, as well as establishing a provisional diagnosis. The provisional diagnosis is generated following a comprehensive oral examination, data collection and radiographic interpretation.
First, mix one tablespoon of baking soda with ½ teaspoon of salt into the cup. After you wet the toothbrush with warm water, dip it into the mixture. Scrub teeth with it and spit. Continue the same process for five minutes.
The easiest way to keep your toothbrush clean is to rinse it with hot water (hot water cleans and kills germs easier) before and after brushing. Use your thumb and move it back and forth against the bristles while underneath or in water. It is important to do it before brushing as well as after because airborne bacteria or other particles such as dust may have settled on the toothbrush since your last brushing.
When it comes to good oral hygiene, electric toothbrushes usually focus on three things: plaque removal, gum health and whitening. So a good starting point when making your choice is figuring out which area you want to focus on – and we help you on this below.
Most, though not all, of the brushes came with additional brush heads, which is nice because replacements can be costly. Some supplied 10 or more heads – presumably enough to last the life of the brush – though a few only came with one.
My head can’t stand the high-pitched tone from the sonic toothbrushes. I used a Philips sonic toothbrush for 6 months as part of a dental trial. The toothbrush itself was not being tested, the investigators wanted everyone using the same brush. I assumed I would get used to the sonic whine after a few days, but never did. Have happily used an electric Oral-B now for over 10 years (yes, it has lasted that long!) with great results.
This is the most well-known and often used tool for removing plaque. Simply pour a little baking soda into a small container, wet your toothbrush, put some baking soda on it and brush. You can mix a pinch of salt into the baking powder for more cleansing power as the salt will be a good abrasive agent along with the baking soda. This removes tartar effectively for just pennies per use.

Although bachelor’s degree programs for dental hygienists are less common than an associate’s degree program, you can find some that will prepare you for a career outside—as well as inside—the dental office. Pursuing a 4-year degree in dental hygiene studies is particularly useful if you plan to teach, participate in research or work in clinical practice in public or school health programs. Some dentists also prefer to hire hygienists with a bachelor’s degree.
Higher-priced Oral-B models don’t have much more to offer than our pick. Investing $50 into the Pro 1000 gets you access to the same set of brush heads as buying the $150 Oral-B Black 7000 model (with the exception of a couple of less widely available models).
That is exactly what is bad about ALL these brushes but doesn’t get a mention in the review – the built-in obsolescence via the needlessly built-in battery. I guess you have to have some environmental heart to care about that. I guess you also have to live in a typical ex-colony where the cost means something. What Europeans and Americans throw away appals me.

Sonicare Brush Heads Proresults Great Buy

This inclusion of this wonder spice should come as no surprise, because it has been used as a pain remedy for toothache for centuries. It is widely available in supermarkets, because it is a common ingredient in Indian cuisine. So, you should have no trouble finding cloves already ground and ready to use. Mix the ground spice with a little water, until it forms a paste. Apply this paste directly to the stained areas and leave to rest. Rinse thoroughly.
To bring this discussion out of theory and into real time use, notice right now while you’re reading this that there is most likely a small pool of saliva under your tongue.  This saliva is essentially waiting to be used to support your oral health.
Most brands, Philips included, have a 90 day grace period. Which means, you can still return or exchange the sonic toothbrush if you realize you have not made the right choice. We strongly advise that you take advantage of this warranty.
Plaque  is the term used for food deposits on our teeth is( usually has a white to cream color) it is caused by bacteria which forms a biofuel on your teeth from food particles and saliva. Tartar also was known as calculus is not plaque it is formed when plaque is hardened between teeth on the teeth .Mature plaque is like a community of different bacteria with various duties.Theses bacteria are only harmless if they do not form tartar once they do in 24-hour disease forming plaque and then tartar can form once not removed. Most people have less plaque on their anterior teeth which are your incisors and canines and more on the posterior those are the molars and premolars which are all loss by age 50 because of bad dental care due to the plaque. Even with everyday brushing and flossing many persons teeth get plaque resulting in tartar buildup between to 1 to 3  leading to gingivitis and bad breath.
I want to become a dental hygienist but what I’m most worried about is after i finish up my 2 years of college, if I’ll be able to get hired! Or if they’ll allow me to work full time in just one office. I am a single mother and I am graduating at 17. I guess I’m worried about whether or not I’ll be allowed in one office and if my hours will make me at least 50,000 annually like the internet says it will.
The exception to the above are the Essence and PowerUp lines, which each use their own specific type of head. (We make note of all of this below. We explain Sonicare brush head options in general, on this page.)
Tartar or calculus is formed when calcium and phosphate bind in your mouth they form crystals these crystal harden and thus you have tartar . Using toothpaste with tetrasodium pyrophosphate  helps to prevent tartar from forming by removing calcium and magnesium from our saliva inhibiting the formation of calculus. A clinical study on tartar was done over 12 week period using toothpaste with tetrasodium pyrophosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate  on 73 subjects who had a Volpe Manhold Calculus Index of 7.0 and greater. After the twelve weeks, the subjects saw a 43.5 % reduction in Calculus Index score. Triclosan is an antimicrobial which clinical studies shows kills the germs between our teeth and gum but some dentists believe this is not that important ingredient once we keep our mouth clean. These toothpaste can be easily be found in your local store check them out.
This entire page is about trying to identify the cheapest Sonicare that can meet the brusher’s needs, in part precisely for the reason you state. In todays world of lowest-possible-cost construction and plannned obsolescence, spending hundreds of dollars for an electric toothbrush seems a questionable act (no matter the brand). And at least with a cheaper brush there’s a chance you can replace it and still stay within the same budget.
I have been using the phillips sonicare tooth brush for almost 5 years. I found out how pricey the replacement brushes are the first time I ran out. All of these models come with superfluous brushing modes. Some offer convenient but redundant charging options. If you want the option of using a brushing app, that’s available with some of them. One model even comes with an (unneeded, see below) UV brush head sanitizer.
Considering that this model is priced under $80, it does come with some cool features. Included are Philips’ SmartTimer, which automatically turns the toothbrush off after 2 minutes. I am not entirely sure I loved this feature, though. In order to continue brushing, the user needs to press the start button again. No biggie, but a bit unnecessary.
A point of order about the word “sonic”: Per advertising from Sonicare that is now close to two decades old, some people take this to mean that sonic toothbrushes “knock off plaque” with “sound waves.” This is not an effect proven in any research.
The following is an overview of the ShippingPass Pilot subscription service. You should review the Terms & Conditions for a more detailed description as well as service limitations prior to signing up for ShippingPass.
I use the Oral-B brushes, and they’re on sale for $4 each every few months from Costco. However, they don’t last anything like 3 months. I haven’t measured, but I’d say they’re about a month each. Maybe 6 weeks.
Rotating brush heads generally oscillate back and forth, so the toothbrush makes the brushing motion for you. This means you can move the brush head from tooth to tooth without making the normal brushing movement, and the device’s own rotation does most of the cleaning for you. If you have mobility issues or arthritis, are easily fatigued, or have poor motor skills, an oscillating or rotating brush head reduces the effort required for cleaning. This is the type of brush Oral-B makes.
In 2009, Fiala co-authored a paper that showed how curcuminoids, substances found in the spice turmeric, enhanced the surface binding of amyloid beta to macrophages and that vitamin D strongly stimulated the uptake and absorption of amyloid beta in macrophages.
First, mix one tablespoon of baking soda with ½ teaspoon of salt into the cup. After you wet the toothbrush with warm water, dip it into the mixture. Scrub teeth with it and spit. Continue the same process for five minutes.
I have an ancient and long-ago discontinued Oral B Sonic Care Complete brush that I refuse to give up. I have duct tape on the band and have to pay a fortune for the proprietary brush heads on Amazon but honestly, no matter what other Oral B brush I buy, nothing compares to the old tried and true. So many new ones make my head vibrate from the inside out or the brush heads are wrong shape for my mouth. I really hate when any company discontinues a good thing.
Motor-powered toothbrushes with 30,000+ brush strokes per minute will save you time. They will truly clean the visible parts of the teeth, as well as between teeth that are not tightly squeezed. Where they will fail, however, is reaching the deep and dark parts of teeth that are very close to each other.
This discussion however relates how two Sonicare publications reported that two different models whitened teeth to the same degree, yet at that point in time when the separate studies were done, only one of the brushes actually featured a fancy whitening mode. The other just the standard 31,000 stroke/min mode.
We get your point about frailty but will also point out that you can break your Series 2 and replace it again for about the same cost as one HealthyWhite. And in an era of planned obsolescence (including the situation where battery failure = toothbrush death), investing as little as possible has advantages.

Brush for two minutes, and don’t use too much pressure. Brush lightly and for the recommended two minutes. Brushing for less time won’t remove plaque and brushing too hard or too much could damage your teeth or gums.
Spend about $70, and your brush comes with a travel case and a few extra cleaning modes, which vibrate the brush at different patterns or frequencies. These brushes also tend to move at a higher frequency, to the tune of 30,000 to 40,000 movements per minute, as opposed to a lower-end brush’s 8,000 to 20,000 movements per minute. There isn’t a proven difference in effectiveness between faster and slower brush movements in existing independent research. We found only one small, old, imperfect study that compared brushes with 2,100, 2,500, and 3,500 brushstrokes per minute and found that the middle frequency was the most effective at removing plaque (“at most 1.5 times better” than the other frequencies and yielded “about 50 percent fewer plaque sites” than the highest frequency). Respondents also said it was the most comfortable frequency. However, there were only 10 participants, they brushed under supervision only some of the time, and they used each toothbrush for only three days.
So besides just a strict comparison of features, we’ve also incorporated these more subjective types of information throughout this page where we think it holds merit and therefore is important to do so.
In addition to clinical practice, there are career opportunities in education, research, sales and marketing, public health, administration and government. Some hygienists combine positions in different settings and career paths for professional variety. Working in education and clinical practice is an example.
This affordable toothbrush is available in soft or medium varieties, depending on your preferences. The “soft” variety has firm bristles, so it is a hybrid between soft and medium. The colors in your pack of six toothbrushes will vary. This pack is one of the “most wished for” items on Amazon and has outstanding reviews online. Colgate also has great specialty toothbrushes, like the Colgate Max White Full Head Toothbrush with whitening benefits and the Colgate 360 Enamel Extra Soft Health Sensitive Toothbrush for sensitive teeth.
Flexible sides complement the unique bristle pattern design to remove up to 10 times more plaque, even in the hard to reach areas.  Cleaning thoroughly in between teeth and along the gumline, the soft rubbers sides of the Plaque Control brush head adapt to the contours of your mouth.
The Philips Sonicare 2 Series is our top pick for its minimalist design and comfortable cleaning power. It comes with one brushing mode, a two-minute timer, and a quad-pacer to guide you as you brush with 40,000 strokes per minute. At $40, it doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, but we appreciated the simple design, because nothing felt unnecessary. Competitors like the Brio came with additional brushing modes, but our testers reported that the experience wasn’t much different and our experts reinforced that an electric toothbrush with the right technique will do more than any brushing mode can.
The variety and diversity of rechargeable toothbrushes on the market can be overwhelmingly annoying. Especially, when you have decided to buy and use one. Besides the numerous differences in design, color and battery life, motor-powered toothbrushes also differ in the manner in which they clean teeth. In fact, there are five different ways to choose from.
Comments: The Essence isn’t as glamorous a brush as the more modern Sonicares but it creates the same 31,000 brush-strokes-per-minute brushing action they do. However, as compared to higher-end models, this one’s mechanism seems to be less powerful. And from what we’ve read in terms of user comments, people who have owned other models may not be satisfied with the brushing experience this one delivers.
While some degrees lend themselves to multiple career paths, a job as a dental hygienist is pretty much the same no matter where you decide to live or work. This consistency can be great, particularly if you love what you do, but if you’re looking for more variety, dental hygiene may not be right for you.
What a good recipe – natural and easily affordable! It’s a very good way to use your toothbrush longer. Is it a good idea to add lemon juice or vodka? They are also used for disinfection. Thank you for sharing this useful information with us! Greets!
You have provided the exact information I have been looking for in a simple, user-friendly manner. Having already put some time into trying to compare some of these models on my own, I can easily tell you that you have saved me a great deal of time and trouble in laying things out as you have. I cannot thank you enough for being so clear, informative, and prompt (in regards to your post replies) with what you have done here. Finding this has just made my day better and I really value and appreciate that. Cheers, all. 🙂

If you want an electric toothbrush with every top-of-the-line feature, the Sonicare DiamondClean Smart Sonic Electric Toothbrush is an excellent choice. The toothbrush uses a simple two-button interface and includes some technique-improving features, like a pressure sensor that lets you know when you’re brushing too hard. In addition, it also has a compatible app that displays a 3D model of teeth to help track your brushing progress in real-time. It even displays an alert if your brushing strokes are too wide — a common technique flaw. The greatest downside is the $165 price tag. But if you’re looking for the most advanced toothbrush on the market, the DiamondClean is for you.
The best Sonicare models – A narrative that outlines how to determine which Sonicare model makes the best choice for you. It discusses Sonicare features, which of these features we think are important to have, and which models seem to offer a reasonable manifestation of them.
We probably don’t need to tell you, but plaque is oral health enemy number one. During the day it builds up on and between your teeth. It leads to tartar, cavities and gum disease so you need to remove it daily to keep your teeth healthy.

The technique is crucial to the effectiveness of tooth brushing and disease prevention.[26] Back and forth brushing is not effective in removing plaque at the gum line. Tooth brushing should employ a systematic approach, angle the bristles at a 45-degree angle towards the gums, and make small circular motions at that angle.[26] This action increases the effectiveness of the technique in removing plaque at the gum line.
Plaque that accumulates on the inner walls of your arteries is made from various substances that circulate in your blood. These include calcium, fat, cholesterol, cellular waste, and fibrin, a material involved in blood clotting. In response to plaque buildup, cells in your artery walls multiply and secrete additional substances that can worsen the state of clogged arteries.
I am not a gadget kind of person. I like things to be practical and valuable so I don’t like bells and whistles necessary, especially when they will cost more and I won’t get a lot of use from them. So thank you for making it so straightforward to understand the options that are truly valuable. I’ve ordered my sonicare and am really looking forward to receiving it. Thanks so much for your help!!
It is now recommended that dentures should be stored in a dry container overnight, as keeping dentures dry for 8 hours significantly reduces the amount of Candida albicans on an acrylic denture.[54] Approximately once a week it is recommended to soak a denture overnight with an alkaline-peroxide denture cleansing tablet, as this has been proved to reduce bacterial mass and pathogenicity.[55][56]

It seems to us that you could make that case. But we’d also suggest that setting that requirement might indicate that the way the brush is being used isn’t the manner for which it was designed. We’ll also state that the purpose of our review is one of making reasonable choices, balancing cost and capabilities.
Hun, there are free dental clinics out there… For free.. They take place annually, you just have to research them. If your issues are extremely bad, go to a hygiene school. The one locally offers discounted dental care. I volunteer for the free clinics every chance I get.
My flexcare finally died after 5 years of use (best brush ive ever owned, though the uv bulb cleaner died after only less than 2 years) , so ive been to both target and bbb and came home to compare the models, hoping i didnt need to get the top model anymore, and wow was this so informative, kinda sad the series 2 doesnt have the quadpacer or that would easily be the best buy, but i do need that option.
i’m on my 3rd week using the Quip after my Sonicare died and I’ve been quite happy. so much so that i think you ought to consider it in your next comparo. Part of my reason I picked this up was because I found dying $100 toothbrushes just outside the warranty aren’t my thing. the moment you start relying on such complex things that break down it’s a good moment to dial down and reconsider.
Proper brushing, especially with a tartar control toothpaste, and flossing are necessary to reduce plaque and tartar buildup. Once tartar has formed, only your dentist or dental hygienist can remove it professionally.
There are a number of ‘travel case’ style units, but this one is much better made than most of them. It’s also FDA registered. Note: this works well for both electric brush heads as well as regular toothbrushes. It’s designed to be for travel purposes, but you can of course use it at home too – it’s got little feet that mean it doesn’t slide around so won’t easily get knocked off the counter top. As a travel unit it runs only from batteries (2 x AAA). The UV treatment starts as soon as you close the case and runs for about 5 to 6 minutes. You should get at least a months use out of 1 set of even average batteries.
One study published in the Journal of Cancer Prevention Research found that poor oral health can increase your chances of getting an oral human papilloma virus infection, which can lead to developing certain oral cancers.
Nursing would be a far better choice! There is growth opportunities and so many options with a nursing career. With a hygiene degree all you can do is work for a dentist. I’ve read all the Bologna about how we can work in hospitals or schools, etc…I see no actual positions?
We will promote the evolution of dental hygiene by exploring and implementing new methods and ideas. Mindfulness, awareness and presence practices are integrated for the development of emotional intelligence and the cultivation of compassionate, empathetic and professional behavior.
The fluid forces that were generated by the sonic toothbrush were able to produce the following cleaning effects in the listed time frames. 58% plaque reduction at 5 seconds, 63% plaque reduction at 10 seconds, 76% plaque reduction at 15 seconds.
I do not belive the statistics given here about dental hygiene being in the top 5 best jobs. I am a licenced dental hygienist in the state of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene from the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis, Tennessee. I am an older hygienist who has through circumstances of life have had to move various times and have found it very hard to find employment!!! I have not been able to find any employment whatsoever!!! It has been my experience, there are way too many dental hygienists out there with not enough jobs to provide them adequate employment. My state has way too many DH schools and is turning out dental hygienists left and right with no jobs for them to get after graduation. Also, I find most dentists do not want to hire an older hygienist even though I have good references and experience Sadly, I think they are too cheep to pay me what I am worth and would rather hire someone with less experience. Most really decent, honorable dentists already have loyal hygienists, who would not leave their practice for anything and I don’t blame them! I have also tried enrolling in a business who gave employment by being a substitute hygienist. This did not, by any means, provide enough work and income to survive on, even living modestly. Being thoroughly disappointed, I have given up totally on the dental hygiene field all together. I recommend by experience to anyone who is thinking of dental hygiene try becoming a dentist or nurse. You will save yourself a lot of misery because I have had my fill of it!
Obviously in a market based economy professionals are going to protect their industry. The fact is that many of us grew up using baking soda, salt, and water. It is not harmful. This article is clearly for people looking for aesthetic help and confidence. Even if they have periodontal issues they may want to do this before going to get help as dentists can be very mean about the issue with clients. Let the people try it without scaring their money into your pockets.
As we noted earlier in this guide, brush heads are a matter of personal preference of size, shape, and material. A number of third-party brands make replacement heads for Oral-B toothbrushes that tend to be much cheaper. There are some reports in user reviews that these aftermarket brushes sometimes do not fit or are of a lower quality than branded brushes, and the heads tend to be rated lower. Pay close attention when shopping for brush heads to what is “Oral-B” vs. “Oral-B compatible.”
The one thing I did notice is that the new unit came with brush heads that do not fit flush against the base of the handle. This once again allows water to seep inside the brush head and sit against the metal tip. I would have thought Tao by now would have fixed this issue with new brush heads. I know the newer replacement heads I bought earlier in the year had solved this, but I guess the replacement units still have the original heads. I will need to remove the head after every couple of uses to swab out the inside of the brush head and wipe down the metal tip to keep it from corroding the metal.
These electric toothbrushes vibrate an astonishing 30,000+ times per minute. The high speed loosens and removes plaque, food bits, and bacteria from the surfaces of the teeth, between the teeth, and even slightly below the gum line. The speed also induces a fluid dynamic inside your mouth, which helps to remove bacteria even slightly beyond the tip of the toothbrush’s bristles. On the downside, some users don’t like the feel of the vibration, and others find sonic toothbrushes irritating to their gums.
Programs typically take 3 years to complete, and offer laboratory, clinical, and classroom instruction. Areas of study include physiology, nutrition, radiography, pathology, medical ethics, anatomy, patient management, and periodontics, which is the study of gum disease.
Dental hygienist instructors train new dental hygienists at academic institutions such as community colleges and universities. They instruct students in classrooms and laboratory settings in methods to remove tartar and stains, take and process x-rays, apply sealants and fluorides, as well as proper oral care and tracking treatment plans and patient care. These instructors must be able to work with a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds, responding to their questions and ensuring they are learning course materials. Dental hygiene instructors must also maintain good student records, as well as stay up to date on developments within their field.
Otherwise, you’re basically saying, “this one works better for me, for the things that I like,” i.e. it makes your mouth feel cleaner (to which I will add that you’ve provided no evidence other than “it feels cleaner to me”). That is great for you if that’s what you care most about. I think most people would prefer the brush with clinical evidence backing it up.
If you have any questions or concerns whatsoever about the health of your teeth, you need to take them to the one person who is perfectly poised to provide an answer or a solution. Your dentist is there to give you as much advice as you need, whether it is about treatments, pain relief, dealing with cavities, or pressing ahead with things like braces and dentures.
The Cybersonic 3 Complete Sonic and Cybersonic Classic came up in our product searches, but we decided not to test them because they have a very limited selection of brush head options (with an optional and dubious-looking “free” replacement program that winds up costing $8 in shipping per brush head).
Precision engineered, the brush head makes use of all the sonic vibrations passed out by the brush handles motor.  It whips toothpaste into bubble and drives them deep between your teeth and along the gumline for gentle and effective cleaning.
Sucrose is used by Streptococcus mutans bacteria to produce biofilm. The sucrose is split by glucansucrase, which allows the bacteria to use the resulting glucose for building glucan polymer film and the resulting fructose as fuel to be converted to lactic acid.
Sterilized.. maybe but I hate to have to tell you it’s probably not clean in the sense most people are thinking. Soap leaves a residue that may or may not be harmful. Of course this depends on the soap your using.

Sonicare’s newest group of brushes are the BrushSync heads. They’re unique because they contain a microchip whose presence can be detected by BrushSync capable toothbrush handles. (Right now that’s just the models that make up the DiamondClean Smart line.)
On their website Phillips claim that the EasyClean removes 2 x plaque while more expensive models remove up to 7 x plaque. Do you think this claim stands up? If it does, then, although I much prefer not to have the extra modes it looks like I must!

To perform an “oil pull,” you swish about one tablespoon of coconut or olive oil around in your mouth for 20 to 30 minutes (much longer than you’d swish around typical mouthwash). Coconut oil is believed to be particularly beneficial because it contains fatty acids such as lauric acid, a substance with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.
Soak your toothbrush head in alcohol. Rubbing alcohol will kill the germs, and if you let it air dry or rinse it with water afterwards you can brush immediately after. Rubbing alcohol does the job pretty quickly, but leave your toothbrush in a glass or bowl of it for at least a minute to assure sanitation.

In addition to dental and science courses, you’ll also earn a liberal arts education. Classes such as English composition and public speaking will give you a well-rounded experience and prepare you for the working world.
Quit being such a know-it-all. Not every one can afford to go to a dentist or even have dental insurance for that matter. If it even helps a little bit, then it’s better for them to try it than to let their teeth and gums go to pot. Just my opinion and probably many others.
If you already have an electric toothbrush that performs these services, there’s no need to consider upgrading. If you use a manual brush and don’t struggle to maintain good habits, there’s little reason to consider upgrading in that case, either.

“Truthfully, at the end of the day, for pennies and minutes—you don’t need all of these more costly brushes—you can choose oral health,” Dr. Lopez-Howell said. No matter the toothbrush (manual or powered, “smart” or not), “brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, floss once daily, and visit your dentist to make sure that you’re doing the right thing.”
The right toothbrush for you depends on your personal preference—do you want a classic brush that costs a couple bucks at the drugstore? Or do you want to shell out for an electric toothbrush that does some of the work for you? According the American Dental Association, they both work equally well to clean your teeth. But a powered toothbrush might help you ditch some of your bad brushing habits—like not going for long enough and failing to hit hard-to-reach spots—and a 2014 Cochrane review of gave powered models a slight edge over the classic toothbrush.
But the biggest problem with all these techniques is that you will forget to do it – because it’s a major hassle to remember to put your toothbrush in the microwave twice a day! And recover it when you want to clean your teeth. So it simply doesn’t get done. Instead, putting your toothbrush back where it is always kept (in the UV unit where it automatically gets treated) is a total no-brainer in comparison.
An ASA physical status classification system is used to indicate future treatment options for the patient, whilst considering the implications of risk factors, such as medical conditions (i.e. endocarditis, diabetes, smoking). This also allows the dental clinician to begin planning all non-surgical therapy.
Since one of our core comparison criteria is not to include brushes that featured unneeded options, we’ll go ahead and scratch the FlexCare Platinum Connected model that has the UV Sanitizer off our list. But that still leaves us with 17 other Sonicares to choose from.
Tartar is also known as hardened plaque. It is composed of organic and inorganic compounds. The organic compounds consist of bacteria and the inorganic compounds consist of various minerals, mostly calcium phosphate crystals. It has been estimated that every gram of tartar has over 200 million bacteria.

Dental hygienists school programs usually require both general education courses and courses specific to the field of dental hygiene. General education courses important to dental hygiene degrees include college level algebra, biology, and chemistry. Courses specific to dental hygiene may include anatomy, oral anatomy, materials science, pharmacology, radiography, periodontology, nutrition, and clinical skills.[citation needed]
“I cannot recommend this toothbrush enough. I have sensitive gums, so the three intensity levels are a nice feature. It also does an excellent job of plaque removal. You’ll still need to floss, but there won’t be much left at all, as seen by using plaque-disclosing tabs. The most noticeable difference is the whitening effect, too. I dipped for 11 years, and it had taken a toll on my teeth. This brush has definitely made a difference in that department. I’ll see if I can get dentist pics and update this later, but it’s really been huge. The design of the brush allows it to stay much cleaner than a lot of other electric brushes I’ve had in the past, too, which is nice. No nasty surprises when replacing heads, and it comes with a nice travel case as well. Highly recommended.”
This is where the compact brush heads come in.  Smaller in size, they cover less tooth surface area when in the mouth, but they are easier to move and manipulate in tighter spaces or harder to reach areas such as the back teeth.
Someone’s sending me a Waterpik, if that makes any difference, and I’m searching for rinses that may help alleviate some of these problems. Thanks for the review, and for your help. Sorry this is so long.
This is by no stretch of the imagination the most technological electric toothbrush on the market. As a matter of fact, it is quite the opposite. While it does have the patented 3D cleaning action (oscillating, pulsating and vibrating), a functioning pressure sensor and a timer, the 1000 series comes only with one cleaning mode. Despite being short on cleaning functions, we found this toothbrush to be quite effective in removing plaque.
This brush head simply clicks on and off your brush handle for a secure fit and easy maintenance and cleaning and is compatible with all Sonicare brushes with the exception of PowerUp Battery and Essence models.
Several years ago Sonicare came out with their click-on brush head design. These brushes snap in place over a rod that extends from the toothbrush’s body. (We discuss the advantages of this design below.)
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the estimated growth in employment of dental hygienists is expected to be about 19% between 2014 and 2024 (www.bls.gov). This excellent job growth figure is attributed to the growing number of elderly in the United States and their increased need for dental care. According to the BLS, the median annual salary of a dental hygienist, as of May 2015, was $72,330.
When plaque on the teeth combines with the minerals in your saliva to form a hard deposit, that’s called tartar. Another name for tartar is calculus. Like plaque, tartar can form both above and below the gum line. Tartar forms a breeding ground for plaque bacteria to thrive in, allowing plaque bacteria to multiply quickly.
Daily preventive care, including proper brushing and flossing, will help stop problems before they develop and is much less painful, expensive, and worrisome than treating conditions that have been allowed to progress.
The researchers incubated the macrophages for a few hours with amyloid beta. To some of the cells they then added either an active form of vitamin D3, or an active form of omega 3 DHA, and watched what effect this had on inflammation and the ability of the macrophages to absorb amyloid beta.

I got mine when I think they must have had only one model. Last time I tried to replace the brush, I had no idea of which one to get. I would also like to replace the unit, since the battery doesn’t hold well any more. Now I have some idea of where to start.
Hi Dental Staff – I wanted to reply to your message as I have now tried out the other models after initially getting a 2 Series. The 2 Series was nice, but I got the feeling it was not the full experience.
To us, battery isn’t an insignificant consideration. But if a particular model met our needs in all other ways, we’d let this one slip by. This page discusses the subject of battery options in greater detail.
A career as a dental hygienist offers a wide range of challenges. In the dental office, the dentist and the dental hygienist work together to meet the oral health needs of patients. Since each state has its own specific regulations regarding their responsibilities, the range of services performed by hygienists varies from state to state. Some of the services provided by dental hygienists may include:
Years ago I decided the compact size cleaned my teeth the best. I think it’s because, in addition to being more maneuverable for reaching difficult places, each bristle receives more energy when the motor’s full force is concentrated on a smaller area.
The truth is, the dentists we spoke to all agreed that how you brush is more important than what you brush with. Proper brushing technique (and flossing) are essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. So it’s certainly possible to clean your teeth effectively with a manual toothbrush, and if you and your dentist are happy with these results, there’s probably no need to switch. But if your pearly whites have room to improve, an electric toothbrush’s oscillating or vibrating battery-powered bristles make it easier to maintain good technique to remove even more plaque.

I feel it worth mentioning that the Deery et al. paper cited as evidence that powered is better than manual is actually far more equivocal. Statistically significant, yes, but very weak effect size, something like 5-15% lower “scores” for plaque and gingivitis. Such small effects may be just as well due to placebo-like effects. And, as the authors themselves state, it is unclear that there is any clinical benefit to this small reduction in these scores. Overall, the case for powered is I think considerably weaker than portrayed here.
The sanitizer reviews above will suit almost everyone. But there is one other option that a lot of people like too. The Steripod toothbrush sanitizer (get them here) – which is a totally different approach. There is no UV light, no batteries, just a little ‘pod’ that you clip onto the head of your brush after using it.
If it’s your first sonic or electric toothbrush, some of the toothbrushes might be equipped with a beginner’s mode. It’s recommended the first 3 days to take it easy with brushing. You can brush first for just 1 minute at a time, which will allow your mouth to slowly adjust to the Sonicare intense vibrations.
Dentists recommend you brush your teeth for two minutes twice daily. A built-in timer, which either switches the toothbrush off at the two-minute mark or vibrates to indicate the time is up, makes it easier to achieve this goal.

Their S520 toothbrush is their most expensive and highest performance one. Pursonic maintains that the S520 model is capable of reaching up to 40,000 brush strokes per minute. Our tests, however, found this toothbrush to be significantly weaker compared to pretty much any Philips electric toothbrush that is priced over $30. In our opinion, the brush strokes per minute did not exceed 15,000.
I have owned my toothbrush for four years. In fact, I bought this product in 2012 for $31 and am only reviewing it now! It looks like the price went down a bit since I bought it. Since then, I have obviously bought many other replacements since $31 is expensive in comparison.

If you do not press the Flexcare+ to hard against your teeth it feels like a really professional cleaning tool at the dentist in a positive way, 2 times every day. Buy!! I will be very surprised if you ever regret it. Most probably you will think, why did I not buy this before and why does not more people know about it as it is such a difference. This product is crazy good I would say and I am picky about products and Philips have made me disappointed several times last 10 years, but not this time. It is an amazing product.
Electric toothbrushes on the whole aren’t exactly known for their ruggedness and longevity (at least not nowadays). So in an era of lowest-possible-cost manufacturing and planned-obsolescence product design, both initial and replacement costs should be factors that are considered.
Thinking about becoming a dental hygienist? You’re about to embark on a growing career that was also ranked #1 in U.S. News & World Report’s 2018 Best Health Care Support Jobs. But how do you get from here to there? To become a dental hygienist, you’ll need to complete two steps.
Non-surgical periodontal therapy is concerned primarily with disease prevention, and is accomplished through patient and clinician cooperative interaction. It is normally accomplished with the incorporation of patient education and motivational interviewing, and if appropriate may include discussions regarding nutrition and smoking cessation.[8] The various treatments involved in this phase include;
Start your brushing in one corner of the mouth and slowly guide the bristles around all of the teeth. You don’t need to scrub but with light pressure gently move the brush head. Make small back and forth movements over the teeth. This will help the longer bristles to reach deeper between the teeth. So you just show the brush where to go and the sonic vibrations do the cleaning work for you.

The point here is that dental care has become more than the ordinary people can afford today. So before a dental nurse gets critical maybe her boss needs to look over the prices he charges the people he services as it has become a difficult choice as much as health care has become.
You may thinking, “just buy a new toothbrush!” But if that’s the case, you’ve never met my two boys, especially the toddler, who can find a toothbrush no matter where it’s hidden! Seriously. He will move any kind of object (i.e. trash can, box, etc.) to creatively use as a step stool. He’ll climb right on top and grab our toothbrushes off the back of the bathroom counter. He will find them tucked away in the back of the bathroom drawer. It doesn’t matter where we hide the toothbrushes, he will find them.
In many ways we’re probably too critical. But we have a high regard for sonic toothbrushes in general, and Sonicare in particular, and just feel that the features they offer should be more about substance than hype.
The Philips Sonicare 2 Series is one of the least expensive Sonicare brushes, at around $50. This brush is quieter than our recommended Oral-B model, with a more subtle motion (though the vibrations can feel slightly more uncomfortable when the back of the brush knocks against your other teeth). The 2 Series also has twice the battery life of the Oral-B, lasting two weeks on a single charge instead of one week (in our tests it lasted for 16 days of use), so it might be a better choice for travelers.

I like the product very much. I just received it yesterday, but I was having trouble with the connection. The usb did not fit well into the plug provided by the product. The light did not go on, so I knew it was not cleaning the brush. I connected the usb to my cell phone charger plug and it works well. I would like the company to send me a replacement plug, so I don’t have to use my cell charger.
There are no surprises here; brushing is the number one treatment for plaque prevention. If you brush properly after every meal (wait half an hour after eating), you can significantly reduce your chance of developing unsightly tartar patches. You need to be brushing for three minutes, with an even amount of pressure, and covering every part of your mouth.
I knew I didn’t trust dentists for a reason especially when they talk and spell in gangster slang, all these dentists do is ruin good healthy teeth, just try bicarbonate soda and lime, mix together to a slight paste and apply to toothbrush and brush, I found this to be most effective.
The Australian Healthcare and Hospital Association’s (AHHA) most recent evidence brief [5]) suggests that dental check-ups should be conducted once every 3 years for adults, and 1 every 2 years for children. It has been documented that dental professionals frequently advise for more frequent visits, but this advice is contraindicated by evidence suggesting that check up frequency should be based on individual risk factors, or the AHHA’s check-up schedule. Professional cleaning includes tooth scaling, tooth polishing, and, if tartar has accumulated, debridement; this is usually followed by a fluoride treatment. However, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) stated in 1998 that there is no evidence that scaling and polishing only above the gums provides therapeutic value, and cleaning should be done under the gums as well.[6] The Cochrane Oral Health Group found only three studies meeting the criteria for inclusion in their study and found little evidence in them to support claims of benefits from supragingival (above the gum) tooth scaling or tooth polishing.[7]
A 2014 study published in the International Journal of Advanced Health Sciences suggests that a significant amount of dissolution of plaque dextran was observed in vinegar (4 percent acetic acid) as compared to distilled water and glycerin.

Routine tooth brushing is the principal method of preventing many oral diseases, and perhaps the most important activity an individual can practice to reduce plaque buildup.[14] Controlling plaque reduces the risk of the individual suffering from plaque-associated diseases such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and caries – the three most common oral diseases.[15] The average brushing time for individuals is between 30 seconds and just over 60 seconds.[16][17][18][19][20][21] Many oral health care professionals agree that tooth brushing should be done for a minimum of two minutes, and be practiced at least twice a day.[22] Brushing for at least two minutes per session is optimal for preventing the most common oral diseases, and removes considerably more plaque than brushing for only 45 seconds[14][22]
When you choose a sonicare toothbrush, you should look out for models that offer you the ability to change the intensity of the sonic vibrations. If you have never used as sonic care toothbrush before, you will need to get used to it. By starting with the lower intensity, you will find that you can then build up to the higher intensity once your teeth and gums are used to the sensation.
Overall, we preferred the Quip. You get the supplies you need to brush effectively (a replacement head and two tubes of toothpaste — a small travel-sized tube for two weeks and a larger one for three months), but we aren’t convinced a subscription is worth it yet. After all, subscription services like Brusher Club allow you to sign up for replacement heads for popular models, and you can always order a 3-monthly subscription for replacement heads from Amazon. Honestly, subscription services don’t actually offer anything we can’t find elsewhere.

We absolutely feel that almost all users should just use Clean mode (at the highest intensity setting). But for people who can’t tolerate that much brushing activity (like elderly or debilitated person’s), this brush gives the user additional options that the 2 Series doesn’t.
Thank you Lori, for your educated advice. I am a dentist and agree that this home remedy is dangerous to not only your gums but your systemic health as well. It is unfortunate not all of us has dental coverage, I didn’t until recently as well. Stick to the basics people! Brushing and flossing goes a long way to help keep your teeth and gums healthy! As far as home remedies are concerned. I truly believe they can be helpful; my mother used them with me and I have worked closely with a homeopath. It is important to know when a home remedy is useful and when you need to seek professional help! Physicians and dentists go to school for many years to learn their specialty. Importantly, if you have let the calculus build up as much as it has in the picture you are in serious need of professional health — see your dentist and hygienist.

Are you planning to move? Your residence could be moving across the street, to another country, or somewhere in between. Moving from one home to another is a ton of work, no matter the distance. I’ve moved multiple times in my life so I’ve learned some valuable lessons along the way. Today I want to […]
Considering that this model is priced under $80, it does come with some cool features. Included are Philips’ SmartTimer, which automatically turns the toothbrush off after 2 minutes. I am not entirely sure I loved this feature, though. In order to continue brushing, the user needs to press the start button again. No biggie, but a bit unnecessary.
The best Oral-B models – Our narrative outlining how to figure out which model makes the best choice for you. It covers Oral-b features, which of them we think are important to have, and which models seem to offer a reasonable manifestation of them.
You can also control tartar and plaque build-up with a hydrogen peroxide based mouthwash or cleanser. If you cannot find this type of product in your local pharmacy, it is pretty easy to knock a batch together yourself. Just take one tablespoon of antiseptic mouthwash and add three tablespoons of (3% only) hydrogen peroxide solution. You must make sure that the substance you use is of a suitable concentration or you could damage your teeth.
Even though we’ve been brushing and flossing our teeth for years and years, many of us are surprised to learn that we’re not doing it properly. Case in point: Did you know that proper brushing takes at least two minutes? Most adults do not come close to brushing that long.
You touched on the issue of sensitivity, but not gum disease. I’ve had periodontitis for years, but it’s gotten much worse. I can’t afford to see a dentist anymore, so an electric toothbrush has become even more critical. I started using the flossing head, but it’s made matters worse. I have to use Peroxyl because my gums are so raw.
Do not let toothbrushes come into contact with one another. If you are storing multiple toothbrushes in one container, make sure they do not touch, as this will allow for the transfer of bacteria and bodily fluids from one brush to another.[8]
In the end, they are probably quite comparable in performance… I’ll stick to my Sonicare as it has shown me improved gum health over a manual toothbrush and (admittedly lower performing) $5 battery operated rotary brushes. I am sure the OralB is better than the $5 units… but given my positive experience with the Sonicare, I see no reason to switch away.
I want to say thank you for the information. For all of you that are talking about its the worst advise. Remember back in the old days there were no dentist, an these remedy she’s talking about with the lemons and other home remedies are what or great Grandparents and relatives use on their teeth. My grandparents and great grandparents all had beautiful health teeth using this method. An I think if it was good for them and they were healthy without all these illnesses we have today. I say do it if you want if you don’t that’s you. But think about all the stuff you put in your mouth on a daily basis. Home Remedies are good. This is a good remedy.
This is where the compact brush heads come in.  Smaller in size, they cover less tooth surface area when in the mouth, but they are easier to move and manipulate in tighter spaces or harder to reach areas such as the back teeth.
The Oral-B Pro 1000 brush comes with a minimal charging pedestal that simply requires dropping the brush onto a peg. Fully charged, it lasts for at least a week of twice-daily two-minute brushing sessions before needing a recharge, which is on a par with the other toothbrushes we tested in this price range and plenty for most people.
Periodontal therapy is a continuous cycle requiring regular evaluation and maintenance to optimise treatment outcomes. The treatment is normally carried out by a dental hygienist or oral health therapist, but involves all members of the dental team and can include specialists throughout the course of care. There are six phases undertaken by dental professionals when undertaking periodontal therapy, which are as follows;[8]
Designed specifically for dental hygienists with an associate’s or certificate, a degree-completion program results in a baccalaureate degree. You must have a license to practice in order to enroll. Since the program is designed for dental hygienists who are already working, you’ll find that some schools offer their curriculum completely online or in a hybrid format. In many cases, you won’t be required to fulfill clinical requirements.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises against using your dishwasher or microwave to disinfect toothbrushes. The CDC even includes ultraviolet devices on the list of things that may damage the toothbrush.
Therefore if you own the Sonicare, 2 Series plaque defence, 3 Series gum health, DiamondClean, EasyClean, FlexCare, FlexCare Platinum, FlexCare+, for Kids or HealthyWhite any of the following brush heads can be used.
Peripheral artery disease. If plaque builds up in the blood vessels that carry blood to your legs, it can reduce the amount of oxygen delivered. The reduced blood flow can cause you to experience pain, numbness, or serious infection in your legs and feet.
The Sonicare 2 Series isn’t without perks, though. When you first start using it, the Sonicare starts off with lower vibrations in order to ease you through the adjustment experience. Our tester appreciated this and told us “the fact that it gently eases into cleaning at full force over 14 sessions makes the experience feel more thoughtful.” We agree, and appreciate that the Sonicare focuses on getting you more comfortable with a proper brushing experience.
Well, one thing to note is that the brush’s second row of bristles is dark blue and fades when used – just like official one! When the row of brushes becomes completely white, you will know when to change the brush head.
The Cybersonic 3 Complete Sonic and Cybersonic Classic came up in our product searches, but we decided not to test them because they have a very limited selection of brush head options (with an optional and dubious-looking “free” replacement program that winds up costing $8 in shipping per brush head).
To begin the search, we trawled the manufacturer websites of the highest-rated brands and looked at the recommendations of Consumer Reports and the Good Housekeeping Institute for toothbrush models as well as their replacement or substitution toothbrush heads, an important factor in choosing a best toothbrush.
How long should one of these last – not the heads, but the handle/charger combo? The article says that the power might decrease over time as the rechargeable battery deteriorates, but I didn’t see any estimate of a general lifespan.
Reminder bristles ensure your most effective clean At first glance it may not be obvious, but brush heads lose stiffness and gradually wear down over months of normal use. Blue reminder bristles fade to white and help you recognise when it’s time for a replacement.
I have had dental hygienists tell me that the Sonicare brushes seem to eliminate bacteria that they can’t even get close to actually physically touching. This seems to be exactly the type of result an energetic sonic wave action could plausibly result in; that a lower-frequency physical cleaning action might not.
Brush for two minutes, and don’t use too much pressure. Brush lightly and for the recommended two minutes. Brushing for less time won’t remove plaque and brushing too hard or too much could damage your teeth or gums.
The Goby’s subscription can be set up to send new brush heads every one to three months. (Dentists recommend that you replace your brush every three months, so the more frequent options are not very necessary for a single user.) Amazon does offer subscription deliveries for its products, too, but only for Prime members. The replacement brush heads for the Goby cost $6 with $3 shipping, about the same as the 2 Series replacements and a little more expensive than the Oral-B’s heads.
But what really sets the Aura Clean Sonic Toothbrush apart from its competitors? It’s the Aura Clean Base Station – a unique enclosed charging base for the toothbrush handle and brush head that won’t take up a lot of space on your vanity, and it also cleans and dries your brush head! Once you dock your damp toothbrush after use, the 360-degree Aura Clean Halo uses powerful UVC rays to kill 99.9% of bacteria, and then the built-in dryer wicks away any moisture from the brush to ensure that no germs or bacteria stand a chance. After all, what’s the point of trying to duplicate that “just came from the dentist” feeling if you’re not even using a hygienic toothbrush?
The game to successfully removing plaque from the inside of the lower front teeth is to put the tip of the brush angled down under your tongue and have the brush handle sticking up out of your mouth, just like my thermometer story.

Featuring a rubber moulding on the back of the brush head for safer, more pleasant cleaning. Both will help remove more plaque than a manual toothbrush, but the larger brush head used by children aged 7+ can remove as much as 7 times more.
One huge advantage of electric toothbrushes is that they are quite fun to use. After all, they are technological gadgets that have timers, flashing lights, they vibrate and therefore bring more joy to the process of teeth cleaning. Also, they are undoubtedly more effective and efficient in cleaning plaque than manual toothbrushes. But, this is not the question at hand.
In the past 8 years, at least 4 times I had SCALING done due to repeated depositioning of ugly brown layer especially in the interior areas of teeth because of smoking of Indian Bidi. This not only increased gap between each tooth but also lead to unbearable sensitivity.

As I also thought as some other here in the discussion, that it might be only design differences for the premium Sonicare models compared to lower level models, I got curious if you could get this excellent brushing experience for less money, to recommend friends and found the Sonicare 3 series gum health HX6631 with 3 intensity levels (for around half price of Flexcare+) where Philips claimed 7 times better plaque removal compared with a regular tooth brush for the gum health at maximum cleaning mode and the 6 times for the Flexcare+ that I first had bought.

Wow. I have now bought and own both a FlexCare and a DiamondClean model. The difference in vibration between these models and the 2 Series is many times over. My teeth feel much cleaner, the strength/power of the vibrations is much more intense with these higher end models.

The Oral-B Vitality electric toothbrush provides a superior clean vs. a regular manual toothbrush. The round shape of the Floss Action toothbrush head is designed to clean tooth by tooth, and its MicroPulse bristles reach deep between teeth. 2D cleaning action oscillates and rotates for better plaque removal than a regular manual toothbrush and an in-handle timer helps you brush for a dentist-recommended 2 minutes. Best of all, it’s brought to you by Oral-B – the brand used by dentists worldwide.
I’m not a dental hygienist but from what I gather, there is A LOT of memorizing involved and you’re basically becoming a tooth doctor, learning about the science of the tooth along with studies of different cancers that are often seen in different patients… I believe that going full time in dental hygiene in college will be too much to cram in just 2 years which is why I’m considering going for lesser credits a semester and making the goal for 3 years. They say for every hour in a college class, count on having 3 hours of homework! Go for three years because it’ll allow you to take things in a little slower and you’ll be better prepared for your future job!! Go for it!
As mentioned earlier, sodium hypochlorite, a common household bleach, can be used as a 0.2% solution for 30 seconds two or three times a week as a cheap and effective means of combating harmful bacteria. The commercial product is 5% or 6%, so this requires diluting the product by a factor of about 30 (half a tablespoon in a full glass of water). The solution will lose activity with time and may be discarded after one day.[23]

Baking soda. Baking soda is great for cleaning almost anything — including your teeth, believe it or not. It’s slightly abrasive, so it helps pry tough tartar and plaque off of your enamel. You can dip your toothbrush in a mixture of baking soda with a pinch of salt.
You would be surprised at how many natural home remedies there are for plaque removal. For example, did you know figs are great at fighting bacteria and other nasties on teeth? You just have to eat a handful (three or four) figs all at the same time. Chew them up slowly and deliberately, to give them as much exposure to the gums and teeth as possible. The chewing will kickstart the salivary glands and, as saliva contains antibacterial properties, this is only ever a bad thing for plaque and tartar accumulations.
Take extra precautions if you have a compromised immune system or are particularly susceptible to illness. Even trace amounts of bacteria can be dangerous for those with compromised immune systems, so keeping your toothbrush disinfected is advisable.[19]
November 14, 2017 – To keep up with new brands and changing technology, we’ve completely revamped our electric toothbrush review from 2015. This time around, we expanded our top picks from one to four to accommodate more budgets and levels of features. We also updated our methodology so that it’s consistent with current research on oral hygiene, and sent 16 toothbrushes home with a team of testers to get real-life feedback. Ultimately, we replaced our original top pick, the Oral-B 7000, with the more-streamlined Philips Sonicare 2, which is $25 cheaper and includes all the key features recommended by dentists to actually improve your brushing technique. If you’re in the market for an electric toothbrush that includes a similarly robust set of features as the Oral-B 7000, we recommend the Philips DiamondClean, which our testers found easier to maneuver, and comes with an intuitive, informative app.
The Foreo Issa is a silicone brush with a sleek and unusual look, but owner reviews on the Sephora site suggest that the all-silicone brush tips lack the ability to clean as thoroughly as plastic bristles. A second model that integrates bristles, the Issa Hybrid, is also available, but per our reasoning above, we don’t need to test this model to know that there is nothing aside from the unusual look to justify its $200 price tag.
Use your eyes to protect your teeth. “When you can visually see discoloration, buildup or matting of the bristles, it’s time to change the toothbrush,” says Dr. Kahn. “It should look clean and straight.” Rinse well to dislodge any chunks of residual toothpaste.

!! This is an important point because despite what type your brush came with originally, you can switch to any other (style or size) head. That makes for a lot of options. (More information about brush heads.)
Last spring I missed my semi-annual dental hygiene appointment around the same time that I discovered OraWellness, so I decided to experiment with using these products in the absence of getting my teeth cleaned, to test their effectiveness.
In regard to the Essence, we follow your train of thought with the exception that the Essence+ (while a less-proven redesign of the old Essence) offers the big advantage of being able to use the fully array of Sonicare snap-op brush heads. With the regular Essence (screw-on heads) you only have the option of one style, in either Standard or Compact size.
A person could conclude that the best brush to buy is simply the one that can best overcome any damping effect. And due to the constant improvement of products, that’s most likely to be the newest, latest model available.
Second, the pH in our mouths plays a substantial role in how much of the available minerals are deposited on our teeth as plaque and how much of these minerals in saliva actually repair our teeth.  Ideally, we want our saliva right around neutral, 6.8-7.0.  This ideal range provides the best environment to balance our oral flora.

To become a dental hygienist in the US one must attend a college or university that is approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination. There are several degrees one may receive. An associate degree after attending community college is the most common and only takes two years to obtain. After doing so, one may work in a dental office. There is also the option of receiving a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree if one plans to work in an educational institute either for teaching or research.
Evidently this is by design. The Sonicare representatives we’ve talked to readily state that there are differences between models (batteries, motors). Considering the price range involved with their product line ($25 to $330), one would have to be relatively naive to expect differently.
We will point out that Sonicare has used the word “reminder” when naming these bristles, meaning they’re not necessarily a precise indicator. Online user comments we read typically stated that the color change signaled replacement before a full 3 months had lapsed.
The best ways to prevent plaque from forming is to stick to good dental habits. Brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice per day (ideally once in the morning and once before you go to bed), and floss at least once per day.
The best electric toothbrush is easy to use, comes with extra bristle heads, improves your brushing technique, and is somewhat inexpensive. But, finding a model that is gentle on the teeth and gums, while eliminating plaque and food debris, is no easy task.
I would say change your toothbrush every six months or so. Hydrogen peroxide is fantastic for disinfecting them(I did it last week!), but you don’t want the bristles to get worn out or frayed. I love the different purposes hydrogen peroxide has, and I also use it as a teeth whitening wash 🙂 Thanks for sharing! I’ll be using this to disinfect my retainer.
As another alternative to Sonicare, you might consider the WaterPik Sensonic Professional Plus (SR-3000). As with the Pulsonic, its features list places it in the same general category as the Sonicare models we discuss on this page.
Both guava fruit and leaves are considered excellent antiplaque agents to help remove plaque accumulated on the teeth and gums. Plus, they have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that help reduce swelling and pain in the gums.
Im about to start Dental Hygienist school. But i saw some from saying that DH is not a good idea, i wont find a job, i will have to depend of the dentist for everything, i will have to work in different places to get hours working. im worried.
As you’ll see below there’s a giant price difference between the top and bottom-end Sonicares. And based on this single factor alone, it’s easy enough to anticipate that while some models may share similar features and specifications, they’re probably not really equals. (It’s been our experience that some Sonicare representatives are pretty quick to harp this point when you call with questions.)
Brushing modes: a) Full-power mode is stated to be 25% faster than a Sonicare, which should place it in the 38,750 brush strokes per minute range. We don’t see this as a giant advantage over a Sonicare (31,000 brush strokes/min.)   b) This brush also has a reduced-power “sensitive” mode.
This is definitely the best brush for the buck since it uses new click style and have full cleaning power. I wouldn’t consider older Essence model at all due to lack of brushhead choices and difficulty of cleaning. I’m surprised they are still selling them considering Essence+ is out.
The variety and diversity of rechargeable toothbrushes on the market can be overwhelmingly annoying. Especially, when you have decided to buy and use one. Besides the numerous differences in design, color and battery life, motor-powered toothbrushes also differ in the manner in which they clean teeth. In fact, there are five different ways to choose from.
thank you for the extremely detailed review and information. i actually purchased the kids model for myself – it actually looks quite good without the stickers and comes at a low enough price for the 30k vibration.
Tooth decay (cavities) is a common problem for people of all ages. For children, untreated cavities can cause pain, absence from school, difficulty concentrating on learning, and poor appearance, all problems that greatly affect quality of life and ability to succeed. Children from lower income families often do not receive timely treatment for tooth decay and are more likely to suffer from these problems. Tooth decay also is a problem for many adults. Adults of some racial and ethnic groups experience more untreated decay.
Priced under $100, the Sensonic comes with 3 brush heads and a travel case. Considering that it also has the QuadPacer and EasyStart modes, together with a 2-speed setting, this Waterpik electric toothbrush is a bargain.
With a contoured profile to fit your child’s teeth, the standard sized heads are most suited to children aged 7+whilst the smaller compact option are best suited to kids aged 4+. Soft bristles for a gentle cleaning experience helps encourage children to brush for longer and assists in education of the importance of regular cleaning.

I really appreciated the clear logic of this comparison, but ultimately I decided I couldn’t pay good money for a brush that shuts off automatically after two minutes. As someone who routinely brushes more than two minutes, I just know I would find the shutdown annoying every time it happened. I do favor the ultrasonic over rotating models, so I’m wondering – what is the best ultrasonic toothbrush (for <$100) that does not shut off automatically after two minutes? Although it is difficult to say definitively which Sonicare brush head is the best, there is the ProResults (view on Amazon) brush head which is an excellent solution for most users offering superior every day, all round cleaning. Using food coloring is a great way to spot plaque on your teeth. First dab a little petroleum jelly to your lips to prevent staining, take a couple drops of food coloring in a teaspoon of water and swish it around your mouth. Spit it out and rinse with clear water. Look for colored areas where the plaque has taken up the dye and remove them with your toothbrush. When performing regular brushing, pay special attention to those areas of your mouth. Spaces between the teeth and ridges on the teeth are prime targets for the buildup of plaque.
In addition to clinical practice, there are career opportunities in education, research, sales and marketing, public health, administration and government. Some hygienists combine positions in different settings and career paths for professional variety. Working in education and clinical practice is an example.
HOWEVER, if you read reviews at sites like Amazon, long time Sonicare users are fairly passionate in their opinion that the Series 2 and Series 3 do not have the performance of older models nor the HealthyWhite+ and above models. They seem very definitive in this opinion and yes they say they turn off the “easy start.” Some even say the Essence makes their teeth feel cleaner than the Series 2.
These brushes give the impression of having a superior design and build. However while we do believe this is point is accurate, actually quantifying this difference in comparison to other models is difficult. (That’s why we’ve sought out sources involving user/owner input when formulating this page.)
is it really? The 1000 is a rotating head. What sort of head is the Deep Sweep? It seems like it doesn’t rotate. Without seeing the underlying motor/link connection, it’s hard to tell if you can simply change the head and have them work. In the same way you can’t put an Oral-B rotating head on a Sonicare (which uses magnets to create vibrations) and have it work.
Excessive Pressure Sensor – Pressing too hard while brushing is a real first world problem. This smart indicator senses when there is too much pressure being applied to the teeth and gums, and stalls the toothbrush for a brief moment. Applying too much force while brushing can lead to a variety of gum-related pain and discomfort. This feature is especially important if you are looking for a more sensitive toothbrush for receding gums.
The biggest problem with the Essence is that you’re severely limited on the style of replacement brush heads. And for that reason the Essence+, while newer and less tested but seemingly the same mechanism, to us seems to make the better choice.
Our research showed that you do not need to spend over $100 in order to get an excellent toothbrush. However, there are some electric toothbrushes that perform better with braces, and some that perform better with sensitive and receding gums. We have reviewed both types for you, to make your choice easier.
1984 – Unsupervised practice: dental hygienist practice without the supervision of a dentist is allowed in hospitals, group homes, nursing homes, home health agencies, Health and Human Service state institutions, jails, and public health facilities as long as the hygienist refers their patients to a dentist for treatment. Hygienists must have at least two years of work experience within the last 5 years.[44]
I’m thoroughly convinced that one reason so many of us have a closet full of clothes we don’t love to wear, is that we shop aimlessly. We buy things JUST because they are on sale. Or JUST because an item is on the new trend list. The problem with that purposeless shopping is we don’t take […]
The majority of the more than 200,000 dental hygienists work in dental offices alongside dentists. Think of a dental hygienist as an insurance agent. “You see dentists when you have a problem,” says Kelli Swanson Jaecks, president of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. “But you see dental hygienists for preventative health care.”
But a simple rinse doesn’t remove all traces of bacteria anyway, and a damp toothbrush is a fantastic breeding ground for bacteria to spend all night long multiplying. So by morning, your toothbrush still looks clean – but it’s far from sanitary.
When it comes to good oral hygiene, electric toothbrushes usually focus on three things: plaque removal, gum health and whitening. So a good starting point when making your choice is figuring out which area you want to focus on – and we help you on this below.
As well, I’ve read most studies regarding the effectiveness of both Braun and Sonicare toothbrushes and the effectiveness of the different available brush-heads. The Sonicare has been proven gentler and more effective at reducing gingivitis and bleeding and the Braun has been proven more effective at removing plaque (particularly with their relatively new Cross Action brush-head)…and very effective at reducing gingivitis as well! Either way, both brushes are more effective than manual brushing (which needs perfect technique to be similarily effective to electric brushes) and are a great way to improve your oral health! Try both the Braun and Sonicare…try the better brush-heads from both brands (Cross Action, Floss Action, Precision Clean…Adaptive Care, Interclean, Diamond Clean brush-heads) and decide what you prefer!
Good to know. I am in California too and thinking of becoming a RDH. I also considered sonography and nursing but think this might be the right choice. I am currently a massage therapist and it’s just too physically demanding and also super inconsistent as it is not a necessity but a luxury to most people. I hear that RDH is physical too but I feel maybe less so? Or possibly just different. I love the idea of not working 5 days as I do lots of things and the hours are way better than nursing and sonography. At this point in life I would prefer not to work late nights, on call or all weekends and holidays. There has to be a balance in everything.
Dental hygienists in the western United States reported the highest average wages as of 2011. Those in California made the most, an average of $91,010 a year, followed closely by dental hygienists working in the District of Columbia, who earned an average yearly salary of $90,500. Washington state ranked third in dental hygienist incomes, an average of $90,420 a year, followed by Nevada at $88,620 and Alaska at $86,310. Alabama reported an average salary of $44,900 a year, the lowest in the nation.
If you keep up with regular dental appointments and check-ups, you are likely to have experienced the professional dental clean. This is like the car wash service of dentistry. It is designed to smooth over those rough edges, spruce up the oral interior, and leave your mouth sparkling and feeling healthy. One of the quickest and easiest ways to do this is to remove plaque and tartar.
Well hate to break it to you but it does NOT work!! Dental schools are reduced fees to benefit the students and YOU, it is not the 25th caller it is anyone who cares enough to want good oral health which also increases good overall health. PleAse think before you believe some nonsense you read on the Internet.
Most dental hygienists earn an associate’s degree, which takes about two years to complete. Your schooling will include time in the classroom and lab as well as a period of clinical experience. The latter is necessary to give you real-world experience before you embark on your career.
There are plenty of free apps—including Oral-B’s for Android and iOS—that can be used with non-“smart” brushes, powered or manual, to help you time and track your toothbrushing, remind you to clean your tongue and floss, and so on. Dr. Lopez-Howell pointed to The Children’s Oral Health campaign’s 2min2x website, produced in collaboration with the Ad Council, which offers a series of two-minute videos kids can watch while brushing.
Unfortunately, there is no cheat or secret way around this one. The reality is that smoking plays havoc with oral and dental hygiene. You will always be at a much higher risk of gum disease and tooth infection while you smoke. It will also lead to accelerated tartar build-up in and around the gum line.
Thank you Tracy! As a hygienist I was hoping someone with some sense would comment on this ridiculous post. But who knows, maybe it really was meant to be a big joke? ? you gotta love the before and after pictures too. I’m pretty sure all that calculus just magically melted away with baking soda and orange peels. Why haven’t we just been using this home remedy all along? I work my fingers to the bone scraping this off all day long the hard way. Who knew??
I’ve been using Sonicare brushes and brush-heads for a dozen years now and this is the first time (2014) I’ve experienced bad quality. Each of the two heads in the package (one I was using, the other – my son, in his identical E-series) experienced the same problem: only a couple of months into using it, the brush started making a strong noise and the vibration weakened significantly, to the point where it wasn’t cleaning at all. I looked carefully at the brush and noticed that the base of the head, which contains a couple of rare-earth magnets, seated on a steel plate, had become loose and was hanging on the plastic tab that protrudes from a hole in the plate (see accompanying pictures). The exact same problem on each brush-head, a clear sign of poor design and execution.
This toothbrush work great for about a month. Then the power began to wane and is now completely dead and does not work. I bought this toothbrush in December so it didn’t even last 6 months. My fiance has a toothbrush as well bought at the same time and while her still turns on the power is definitely not the same period I suspect hers will be going out soon.

No ordinary brush head though is this.  Thanks to a built in chip, when you fit onto a compatible brush handle, the microchip communicates with the brush handle to launch the optimum cleaning mode and intensity level for the most effective plaque removal experience.
Many of the courses you take in a dental hygiene program will be applicable for a dental program, and the training and experience could help when sitting for the Dental Acceptance Test to gain admission to dental school. But working as a dental hygienist isn’t a shortcut to becoming a dentist. Hygienists who choose to pursue a D.D.S. will still have the same length of study plus years of residency, even if they have a professional background in dentistry.
Exactly! They Never give you any remedies, only charge, charge, charge, Went yesterday to a dentist and she took her metal tool and tapped my abscessed tooth so hard I had to go to the hospital in pain, no compassion just a quick assessment to see what I needed and what they would charge to do it. And off I went with antibiotics and pain pills. Hope some of these natural remedies work. I am in horrible pain from my head ears, throat, jaw, and very sick. I feel dizzy and feel my heart racing. I am really worried.
Dental hygienists holding an associate degree have opportunities to pursue a baccalaureate degree through degree completion programs specifically designed to advance their education. Many of these programs are offered in either full-time or part-time options and have online or distance education opportunities. Dental hygienists who have completed a baccalaureate degree can pursue a graduate degree in dental hygiene or related discipline. Dental hygienists with advanced degrees have broader opportunities for alternative careers within dentistry, dental education and health care delivery.
If you are like most people, you are reminded each morning of the millions of bacteria growing in our mouths.  After all, that’s one of the reasons we brush our teeth every morning.  But where do those germs go?  Yes, some of them go down the drain, but far too many of them remain on our toothbrushes.
Addresses in the following State Codes AK, HI, AE, AP, AA, PR, GU, MP, PW, AS, VI, FM and APO/FPO addresses with U.S. ZIP Codes will ship for free with value shipping. You will see this noted in checkout.
Actually, this study did not perform this test. However, one would have to assume that when in direct contact with the surface of a tooth that most modern conventional electric toothbrushes are very effective plaque removers. (There are plenty of studies that have suggested this.)
Don’t forget your front teeth! One downside of the quad-pacer features, Dr. Lawlor explained, is that “people always miss the front teeth — they brush from left to right and forget to bring their brush across the front.” To get the most out of your quad-pacer, you’ll want to split your front teeth between quadrants.
I used to use a rotating brush and graduated to a Sonicare. No comparison. The small brush simply didn’t clean as well. Could you paint as effectively with a small brush as you could with a big one? The smaller brush simply doesn’t have the same amount of coverage in the same amount of time. I’ve had no problem getting into tight areas with my larger brush. It’s the same as with a manual brush.
Since one of our core comparison criteria is not to include brushes that featured unneeded options, we’ll go ahead and scratch the FlexCare Platinum Connected model that has the UV Sanitizer off our list. But that still leaves us with 17 other Sonicares to choose from.
Featuring a rubber moulding on the back of the brush head for safer, more pleasant cleaning. Both will help remove more plaque than a manual toothbrush, but the larger brush head used by children aged 7+ can remove as much as 7 times more.

Without proper treatment, tartar and plaque can lead to a variety of issues like cavities, gum disease and tooth loss. It’s important to brush twice a day and floss once a day, and schedule regular checkups and professional cleanings with your dentist.
All Sonicare toothbrushes come with a brush head to help you benefit from the incredible cleaning power of the brand’s sonic technology. Like manual toothbrushes, the power toothbrush heads become worn due to the friction of brushing and can begin to harbor bacteria over time. As a result, Sonicare recommends that the brush heads for all of their models be replaced every 3 months. This helps to keep Sonicare toothbrushes sanitary and functioning at their best. In addition to the standard brush heads sold with Sonicare products, the brand also offers specialty heads that can be used in a variety of their sonic toothbrush models. These heads can help you to address oral care concerns that you may have, such as reducing staining from drinking coffee and tea or removing more plaque from along the gum line. By choosing the right head for your Sonic toothbrush, you can optimize the cleaning power of the sonic movements to better meet the needs of your teeth and gums.
Today’s busy lifestyles typically cause large amounts of stress that can raise hormones to an unhealthy level in the body. Factors like smoking, drinking too much and overeating also contribute to poor arterial health. All of these things together can cause weight gain and blockages in the arteries.
Note: When it comes to the EasyStart and QuadPacer functions, the information found on Sonicare’s website doesn’t always agree with what is found in the user manuals of individual models. On this page we’ve tended to side with what’s shown on the website, assuming that it is the most up-to-date information.
The Pro 1000 series has a charging indicator, a low-battery indicator, and a simple closed charging system that allows you to just drop the brush in place, much like this one found on the Deep Sweep model. Photo: Casey Johnston
In performing the dental hygiene process of care, the dental hygienist assesses the patient’s oral tissues and overall health determining the presence or absence of disease, other abnormalities and disease risks; develops a dental hygiene diagnosis based on clinical findings; formulates evidence-based, patient-centered treatment care plans; performs the clinical procedures outlined in the treatment care plan; educates patients regarding oral hygiene and preventive oral care; and evaluates the outcomes of educational strategies and clinical procedures provided.
The crux of this issue is that the Sonicare has no clinical evidence to show that it’s better at cleaning than a normal brush whereas the Oral-B does. Lots of it. You can click the links and read the papers for yourself.
If not, it can get worse, to the point where pockets form between the gums and teeth and get infected by bacteria. That’s called periodontitis. Your immune system sends chemicals to fight back and they mix with bacteria and the stuff it puts out. The resulting stew can damage the bones and tissues that hold your teeth in place. Also, some studies link the bacteria in gum disease to heart disease and other health problems.
[Actually, if you do the math you’ll find that even these low frequency brushes do have stroke rates that lie inside the audible range (although the very bottom of it). But as a matter of convention, they’re not classified as sonic toothbrushes.]
Being able to reach 31,000 brush strokes per minute, the Sensonic Professional Plus has earned its place among the big boys. Namely, Philips and Oral-B. In fact, this Waterpik model is about 25% faster than Philips’ Sonicare FlexCare model.
Try gargling for 5 min with a mouthful of coconut oil .I came across this somewhere and have found it effective .No dentist can say it is abrasive .Most toothpaste are loaded with abrasive material and is one of the main reasons for teeth wear and tear.
At the time of this update (September 5, 2017), the above toothbrushes constituted all of the models that Sonicare (Koninklijke Philips N.V) displayed on the USA version of their website as their “current” products.
Someone’s sending me a Waterpik, if that makes any difference, and I’m searching for rinses that may help alleviate some of these problems. Thanks for the review, and for your help. Sorry this is so long.
To brush your teeth, The Goby uses a rotating brush head similar to the Oral-B’s rather than an oscillating head like you’d find on the Philips Sonicare, and it feels like our top pick’s. Though a rotating brush head can produce some vibrations, we’ve found that the Goby is not uncomfortable to use. Goby says its rechargeable, induction-based battery will last two weeks, or 28 cycles, on a single charge. In our testing, a new unit lasted a little longer than that, running for 33 cycles. However, an earlier production model we tested, which may have been defective, lasted only 14 cycles. We prefer the Goby over the weaker Quip subscription brushes, which only vibrate softly like cheaper Oral-B Pulsar disposables.
Baking soda. Baking soda is great for cleaning almost anything — including your teeth, believe it or not. It’s slightly abrasive, so it helps pry tough tartar and plaque off of your enamel. You can dip your toothbrush in a mixture of baking soda with a pinch of salt.
It features five different modes for custom brushing for your special needs. Except the DiamondClean toothbrush itself, the package of this model includes two brush heads, a glass for charging and a travel case that you can also use for charging through its USB port.

Unlike plaque, tartar is a mineral buildup that’s fairly easy to see, if above the gum line. The most common sign of tartar is a yellow or brown deposit between the lower front teeth or at the gum line. The only way to remove tartar completely is to see your dentist or dental hygienist for a professional cleaning.
We’ve gone through two sets of double Phillips Sonicare Flexcare brushes and love them, except they ALWAYS die, typically within 9 months. Phillips will back them once and send a replacement, but once you’ve passed a year your out of luck. We’ve had all four brushed die within a year, as well as their replacements (undoubtedly refurbs) die all within 6 months. It’s simply not worth the hassle. Now, sadly, I’ll be taking the leap over to Oral B to see if they can provide something that will actually last.

It is possible that you can use any of the Sonicare brush heads with the sensitive cleaning mode on Sonicare brush handles but the clean and experience may not be as enjoyable if you suffer from sensitive gums.

The bristles rotation gets triggered as soon as the brush head begins to oscillate. The average Oral-B oscillating device produces between 3,000 and 7,500 rotations per minute. In addition, some models have pulsating features added. This allows for further and deeper cleaning of plaque. In comparison, manual toothbrushing moves at around 400 strokes per minute. Hardly a competition when it comes to speed.
Detail oriented. Dental hygienists must follow specific rules and protocols to help dentists diagnose and treat a patient. Depending on the state in which they work and/or the treatment provided, dental hygienists may work without the direct supervision of a dentist.
Philips Sonicare 3 Series Gum Health feels and works very similarly to the 2 Series, with a glossy plastic handle and minimal gripping ridges. Now that our runner-up comes with a quadrant timer, this toothbrush has no features that we think are worth spending extra on.
Protect your teeth with Oral-B’s Sugar Defense Toothbrush with 2.5x deeper reach to remove more plaque than a regular manual toothbrush. The Sugar Defense toothbrush cleans hard to reach areas, in-between teeth, along the gumline, and on the tongue and cheek. It gives users a comfortable whole mouth clean experience and is easy and effortless to use. It provides the basic anti-cavity benefits you need in a toothbrush.
Oral-B Pro-Health All-In-One toothbrush has been clinically proven to remove more plaque than a regular manual toothbrush with its CrissCross® bristles, which are angled at 16° to attack plaque from the right angle.
The Pro 1000 was also quite comfortable to use. Oral-B models use rotation and pulsation, so its brushes don’t buzz as intensely when the brush’s head touches your other teeth. All Sonicares vibrate at the same (high) frequency and produce a more jarring sensation when the back of the brush collides with other teeth.
The solution will lose activity with time and may be discarded after one day.[23]
I’m starting to suspect that the strong, oscillating movements of the Oral-B may be contributing to the problem. I had a Sonicare a million years ago, and I don’t remember it being so hard on my gums. Would switching back help, or should I get a more expensive Oral-B? I have a very small mouth, so I can’t tolerate large brush heads. I liked the Quadpacer feature, because I really do need to be reminded to brush uniformly.
The job market for dental hygienists is booming. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the occupation will grow nearly 20 percent by 2026, which is much faster than the average growth rate for most professions. This swell in jobs is likely due to the increased awareness among consumers of how oral health is linked to their overall health.
Average Americans work well into their 60s, so workers might as well have a job that’s enjoyable and a career that’s fulfilling. A job with a low stress level, good work-life balance and solid prospects to improve, get promoted and earn a higher salary would make many employees happy. Here’s how Dental Hygienists job satisfaction is rated in terms of upward mobility, stress level and flexibility.
I was a Dental Assistant for many years. I considered becoming a Dental Hygienist but changed my mind for the following reasons. My job was full time. The Hygienist had to work part time at 2 offices. Dentist don’t want to pay the salery for full time employment. I knew hygienist who worked at 3 offices and others who couldn’t find jobs. Some worked through dental employment agency’s, a day here a day there. The agency took a cut of their salary. Dentist cram their hygiene patients into a few days. They don’t want to pay for any benefits. The work is very repetitive, much like an assembly line and sedentary. The hygiene room is usually small. The Hygienist usually sees new patients first. It’s their job to clean up some of the most poorly kept mouths which could be absolutely disgusting with the worst bad breath imaginable. So, even though hygienist make a higher hourly wage, being an assistant proved to be much more interesting and secure.
It can be pretty tricky to use Bass brushing on this surface.  Unless you have a really wide dental arch (lucky you), it can be tough to get your toothbrush to lay at the correct angle to use the Bass technique as we’ve taught it.
We sent our kids’ toothbrushes home with a parent and asked them to share which toothbrush was able to encourage their three-year-old to brush without any fuss. The Oral-B Stages Power came with songs that earned high marks for being fun and engaging, but kept starting and stopping which confused both our young tester and her parent. The Sonicare came with stickers that were a bit distracting, but the included phone app made our young tester excited to brush again in the morning — no small feat.
The best way to do that is by flossing every day before going to bed or anytime you feel uncomfortable – especially after eating meat. Flossing should be completed by a rinse with mouthwash or using the jet from the oral irrigator.

Microwaves and dishwashers are pretty effective at killing bacteria. For instance, the microwave produces radiation while the dishwasher uses soap and hot water to get the job done. Similarly soaking your brush in mouthwash or white vinegar will help. As will rubbing just one drop of Dental Pro 7 into the bristles of your brush.
The TAO Clean Aura Clean Sonic Toothbrush uses 40,000 tiny brush strokes per minute to sweep away plaque and gently polish away surface stains. Features dual cleaning settings and dentist-recommended 2-minute brush timer
This can be a very strange experience, because the dentist moves in close and uses a special scraping instrument to, literally, force the plaque from the teeth. They tend to focus particularly hard on areas where the tarter has begun to form calcified spots. These can be seen a little white or yellow marks on the outer surface of the enamel.
Standing at bed and bath because my old sonicare died and so did he one my friend gave me so I could use up my old brush heads and I was overwhelmed by too many choices!! You helped me make up my mind so quickly and I really appreciate it. Healthy white for me!!!
Roughly speaking, sonic toothbrushes are somewhat similar to regular ones. Their purpose is to quickly move back on forth over the exterior of the teeth in order to scrub away plaque and food debris. Where they differ, however, is the speed of movement with which they operate.
