The tasks hygienists may perform, and the extent to which they must be supervised by a dentist, vary by state and by the setting in which the dental hygienist works. For example, some states allow hygienists to diagnose certain health problems independently of a dentist.
Remember that sonicare toothbrush heads are exceptionally high quality, and this can make them a little more expensive than manual toothbrushes. They are certainly worth it however, and if you want to save some money when it comes to buying replacement head, you should consider purchasing multiple heads at the same time.
A full review of the patient’s medical history to identify the patient’s systemic health, as well as establishing a provisional diagnosis. The provisional diagnosis is generated following a comprehensive oral examination, data collection and radiographic interpretation.
Leave your toothbrush head in mouthwash. Because mouthwash is an antiseptic, it can kill germs as well. The alcohol content is lower, however, so leave your toothbrush head in the liquid for several minutes.
Hi, I’ve been a dental hygienist for almost 9 years and even though I’m currently in the midst of re-negotiating my pay and benefits with my employer, I have been very satisfied with my career overall. I did start out working for different offices but as of the last 6 years or so I’m only at one office and sometimes get calls to sub for another office (for a hygienist on vacation or something). I live in California and my lowest annual income was $68K and that was for working about 3 days a week. Last year I worked 4 days a week and made almost $89K. As a single parent of a daughter about to go off to college I can honestly say it is a great career if you want to be on your own two feet. I get 3 days of sick pay, 4 days of vacation and profit sharing. I was offered medical but it was too expensive so I got my own individual plans. Every career has it’s trade offs, burn outs, complaints and aches and pains but I would pick this one all over again if given the choice.
Besides being a little chunky and not having the best of batteries, the 5 customised brushing modes make this toothbrush both fun and practical. The massage mode is especially relaxing and it felt really good on the gums. While the deep clean might come too strong for new users. The illuminating pressure sensor gives this model a more futuristic feel, which is pretty cool. It also helps you regulate how hard you press your teeth.
Thanks for your feedback on our pick. We’ll definitely keep the buildup issue you mention in mind next time we revisit this guide. If you were happier with the Sonicare than you are with the Oral-B, then you should switch back. We’re sorry our pick didn’t work out, but what matters most to us is that you have a product that you like.
HOWEVER, if you read reviews at sites like Amazon, long time Sonicare users are fairly passionate in their opinion that the Series 2 and Series 3 do not have the performance of older models nor the HealthyWhite+ and above models. They seem very definitive in this opinion and yes they say they turn off the “easy start.” Some even say the Essence makes their teeth feel cleaner than the Series 2.
In our days, leading classifications of electric toothbrushes are based on the design and mechanism of their brush head action. On one hand, we have the oscillating toothbrush. In this case, the head spins around the tooth in one direction or the other in a rotary-like movement. On the other hand, there is the sonic toothbrush, which produces high vibrations from side-to-side.
This is great! I used to boil water and put my toothbrush in there for awhile, but these methods seem much better. Wish I would have known about them BEFORE I got my self-sanitizing one! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
If you are on the market for a high-end, feature-packed electric toothbrush, then you should definitely check out the Pro 8000 by Oral-B. This model comes with Bluetooth connectivity and a user-friendly smartphone app that is designed to improve your brushing habits and experience. When combined with 48,000 oscillating strokes per minutes, this toothbrush is not just fancy, but also extremely effective at reaching the inner depths of your mouth and destroying plaque completely.
This lower model usually sells for less than $30 and it can be a pretty decent first electric toothbrush. Considering your hand is tired and ready to make the switch from manual. Because it is priced much lower than any of the Oral-B Pro series, the Vitality does not come with the 3D cleaning action technology. Instead, it comes with the 2D technology which includes oscillation and rotation modes, but it lacks the pulsating one.
If not, it can get worse, to the point where pockets form between the gums and teeth and get infected by bacteria. That’s called periodontitis. Your immune system sends chemicals to fight back and they mix with bacteria and the stuff it puts out. The resulting stew can damage the bones and tissues that hold your teeth in place. Also, some studies link the bacteria in gum disease to heart disease and other health problems.
Actually, this study did not perform this test. However, one would have to assume that when in direct contact with the surface of a tooth that most modern conventional electric toothbrushes are very effective plaque removers. (There are plenty of studies that have suggested this.)
I agree with a lot of was reviewed here like bang for the buck and how the oscillating brush does remove more plague (7%). Have you guys considered that study has shown that the oral-b oscillating brush did not improve gum health over a 6 month study while the sonicare showed vast improvement for gum health in 6 months compared to oral b.
Most of the current higher-end Sonicares either are or were top-of-the-line models, or at least introduced some new brushing feature. There seemed to be a natural migration of models on down the Sonicare line up as each successive newer one was introduced.

With an angled neck and contoured bristles that correspond to the natural shape of your teeth, the e-Series Standard toothbrush heads deliver a thorough, comfortable brushing experience. The angled neck provides optimal reach for the bristles, which have soft rounded ends that gently massage your gums and go deep between teeth to remove plaque.
Hygienists are in demand in general dental practices and in specialty practices such as periodontics or pediatric dentistry. They also may be employed to provide dental hygiene services for patients in hospitals, nursing homes and public health clinics.
All essence+ models have same specifications. They only differ in color and included starter brush type. They all have QuadPacer and it beeps when battery is low. LED battery indicator is bit hard to see (too dim) but it’s minor issue.
Tomatoes and strawberries are rich in vitamin C which is excellent for oral health. You can rub these fruits directly onto your teeth and let it sit for 5 minutes. This way the tartar buildup will soften.
Most of the Sonicare toothbrushes are equipped with timers. Some will have two timers: a 2-minute timer and a quad pacer. The others will just have a 2-minute timer. The recommended time is 2 minutes, and the timer automatically stops after the period is completed. The quad pacer is perfect for more thorough cleaning, as it gives 4 intervals of 30 seconds for each of your mouth’s quadrants. The quad pacer usually gives an alerting sound for you to move to the next quadrant.
“The ISSA Toothbrush by Foreo is a breakthrough in battery-operated toothbrushes,” says Gregg Lituchy, a dentist at Lowenberg, Lituchy & Kantor in New York City. Instead of the usual rotating bristle brush, the ISSA uses a pulsing silicone brush that the company claims is 35 times more hygienic than standard bristles. The head needs to be replaced just once a year and the charge lasts about 6 months.
The longer that plaque stays on the tooth surface, the harder and more attached to the tooth it becomes. That is when it is referred to as calculus and needs to be removed by a dental professional.[1] If this is not treated, the inflammation will lead to the bone loss and will eventually lead to the affected teeth becoming loose.[13]
A 2014 study published in the International Journal of Current Microbiology and Applied Sciences showed that guava leaf extract causes a reduction in the adhesion of early plaque. It has excellent antibacterial and biofilm-inhibition activity against Streptococcus mutans that cause dental plaque.
If the toothpaste you use contains peroxide, baking soda or other type of bicarbonate (these are ingredients frequently found in “whitening” toothpaste), be sure to rinse you brush off thoroughly after use.
The Braun 1000 (and Canadian 2000 model) oscillate 8800 times per minute and pulsate 20,000 times per minute. The 3000, 4000, and 5000 models oscillate at the same rate but pulsate at 40,000 per minute. There are some that say that the 40,000 pulsations act similar to Sonicare’s 31,000 micro-vibrating sweeps, that clean beyond where the toothbrush comes in contact with your teeth…by spraying water, toothpaste and saliva between teeth etc. The 20,000 pulsations are theoretically less effective than the 40,000 pulsations in this respect.
We’ll also state that today when looking at the overall “star ratings” on Amazon for the Sonicare Series 2 and 3 as compared to the higher-priced models, the 2 and 3 (each having hundreds, if not thousands of reviews) have been rated just as positively, if not more so, than the higher-end brushes, so at least some users consider those brushes a reasonable choice.
Most dental hygienists earn an associate’s degree, which takes about two years to complete. Your schooling will include time in the classroom and lab as well as a period of clinical experience. The latter is necessary to give you real-world experience before you embark on your career.
