Specifically designed to help improve the teeth whitening process, this is one of Philips higher-end electric toothbrushes. In other words, it is priced over $100. However, it does not come short of brushing features and it does have the standard patented Sonicare technology. 31,000 brush strokes per minute are not a problem for this model.
The Pro 1000 is rated to last for seven days of brushing sessions on one charge; in our real-world testing, it lasted for 11½ days, which is average for a brush in this price range. Like the more expensive models we tested, the brush survived its drop test, fits in its charging cradle well, and can switch out brush heads easily. Oral-B changes the name of this brush about once a year, but functionally the entire series remains pretty much the same.
The program can take between one and two years to complete, depending on if you attend part-time or full-time. After completing the appropriate coursework, students are usually required to submit a capstone project. You’ll typically have to conduct research in a particular area of dental hygiene.
Electric toothbrushes are not any more effective at cleaning teeth than regular manually-operated ones. However, some people find that they are inclined to brush their teeth more regularly and for longer when they own an electric toothbrush, so investing in one may not be a bad idea.
Soniccare are junk and the company does not stand behind their product. I had one with a defective battery and it started to smell bad. The only thing I got from their customer service is 15% off to purchase another one with free shipping. Why would I purchase another product from your company when you don’t stand behind the product I bought? Go with Oral B.

Do not let toothbrushes come into contact with one another. If you are storing multiple toothbrushes in one container, make sure they do not touch, as this will allow for the transfer of bacteria and bodily fluids from one brush to another.[8]

Both Oral-B and Sonicare make extensive lines of brushes and don’t exactly go to pains to make it clear what the difference is between all of them. Although the Oral-B 7000 costs more than the Oral-B 1000 because of added, unnecessary features, such as additional “cleaning modes,” we chose to test it to see if the user experience was better. It wasn’t.
Do not soak your toothbrush in mouthwash or a disinfecting solution. According to the American Dental Association, there is no clinical evidence that soaking your toothbrush in antibacterial mouthwash has any effect on your oral health.[13]

Electric toothbrushes come in two different styles — oscillating or sonic. There’s debate about which type offers a better clean for your teeth, but it turns out choosing a style largely depends on comfort and personal preference.
During the research process, we spoke with several experts on the subject of dentistry, including dental school faculty at leading research universities, a professional dentist, and a consumer advisor appointed by the American Dental Association (ADA), which confers a Seal of Acceptance on dental care products that seek the certification and meet a set of agreed-upon criteria.
No ordinary brush head though is this.  Thanks to a built in chip, when you fit onto a compatible brush handle, the microchip communicates with the brush handle to launch the optimum cleaning mode and intensity level for the most effective plaque removal experience.
The Sonicare 2 and 3 Series toothbrushes don’t fit that mold. These models were introduced as “cheaper alternatives,” evidently to cover specific price points in the line up. And it seems that their design, as mentioned above, tends to reflect that.
Obviously in a market based economy professionals are going to protect their industry. The fact is that many of us grew up using baking soda, salt, and water. It is not harmful. This article is clearly for people looking for aesthetic help and confidence. Even if they have periodontal issues they may want to do this before going to get help as dentists can be very mean about the issue with clients. Let the people try it without scaring their money into your pockets.

Most research that we did and came across suggests that electric toothbrushes can most certainly improve brushing habits. As a result, this will inevitably improve your overall oral hygiene and make you less prone to oral diseases. Dental professionals are united around the notion that anything with 28,000 or more brush strokes per minute considerably increases the cleanliness of your entire mouth while decreasing the effort.
This toothbrush work great for about a month. Then the power began to wane and is now completely dead and does not work. I bought this toothbrush in December so it didn’t even last 6 months. My fiance has a toothbrush as well bought at the same time and while her still turns on the power is definitely not the same period I suspect hers will be going out soon.

Never share a toothbrush. Your mouth needs a healthy flora of its own bacteria, but it’s not good to introduce bacteria from someone else. That’s why Dr. Kahn says you should never share a toothbrush, especially with your children. “That’s when they are acquiring their normal flora,” she says.
You are correct that there’s no evidence that different brush heads will clean your teeth better, but we think having a range of available brush heads matters in so far as personal preference is concerned. You brush your teeth twice a day every day, so you probably want the brush head to feel comfortable.
But a simple rinse doesn’t remove all traces of bacteria anyway, and a damp toothbrush is a fantastic breeding ground for bacteria to spend all night long multiplying. So by morning, your toothbrush still looks clean – but it’s far from sanitary.
The non-contact cleaning action of a Sonicare is dependent on the way it agitates the fluids surrounding the teeth. As such, you’d have to assume that lower-power setting creates a lesser non-contact cleaning effect. But whether this relationship curve is linear or exponential in shape, we don’t know.
With any manual toothbrush, there’re places in between the teeth that are difficult to reach. That can leave plaque and lead to cavities. However, DiamondClean provides double cleaning power to that of a manual toothbrush. This results in more plaque removal in the hardest to reach areas.

High school students interested in becoming dental hygienists should take courses in biology, chemistry, and math. Most dental hygiene programs also require applicants to complete prerequisites, which often include college-level courses. Specific requirements vary by school.
Flexible sides complement the unique bristle pattern design to remove up to 10 times more plaque, even in the hard to reach areas.  Cleaning thoroughly in between teeth and along the gumline, the soft rubbers sides of the Plaque Control brush head adapt to the contours of your mouth.
Dental hygienists can become members of the New Zealand Dental Hygienists’ Association.[28] The association was founded in 1993,[29] and is affiliated with the International Federation of Dental Hygienists.[30]
Plaque  is the term used for food deposits on our teeth is( usually has a white to cream color) it is caused by bacteria which forms a biofuel on your teeth from food particles and saliva. Tartar also was known as calculus is not plaque it is formed when plaque is hardened between teeth on the teeth .Mature plaque is like a community of different bacteria with various duties.Theses bacteria are only harmless if they do not form tartar once they do in 24-hour disease forming plaque and then tartar can form once not removed. Most people have less plaque on their anterior teeth which are your incisors and canines and more on the posterior those are the molars and premolars which are all loss by age 50 because of bad dental care due to the plaque. Even with everyday brushing and flossing many persons teeth get plaque resulting in tartar buildup between to 1 to 3  leading to gingivitis and bad breath.
I fully agree that the “extra features” are largely useless. But, bottom line, a powered brush makes sense based on everything I have seen. I don’t care if it’s Sonicare or OralB… both should be better than manual…

“Toothbrushes are as individual as automobiles. Everyone has a preference. I personally use a Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush,” says John Comisi, a dentist based in Ithaca, New York. “I like its small diameter toothbrush head, with a 2-minute timer. It comes with a very convenient travel case. Overall, it is probably the electronic toothbrush I recommend most.”
In the past 8 years, at least 4 times I had SCALING done due to repeated depositioning of ugly brown layer especially in the interior areas of teeth because of smoking of Indian Bidi. This not only increased gap between each tooth but also lead to unbearable sensitivity.
I like the product very much. I just received it yesterday, but I was having trouble with the connection. The usb did not fit well into the plug provided by the product. The light did not go on, so I knew it was not cleaning the brush. I connected the usb to my cell phone charger plug and it works well. I would like the company to send me a replacement plug, so I don’t have to use my cell charger.
Ok, I am also a hygienist. And for those of you who do not have dental insurance or the money to go to the dentist, the BEST way to reduce plaque and tartar is to brush, floss, and use mouth rinse 2XDay.
Therefore if you own the Sonicare, 2 Series plaque defence, 3 Series gum health, DiamondClean, EasyClean, FlexCare, FlexCare Platinum, FlexCare+, for Kids or HealthyWhite any of the following brush heads can be used.
Use the right kind of toothbrush and toothpaste. To effectively brush your teeth and ensure that you are getting rid of as much plaque as possible, it is important that you have the right tools. Although there are many fancy toothbrushes on the market, the American Dental Association states that any “soft nylon brush with rounded-end, polished bristles” will do the trick.[1] Hard bristled toothbrushes can be too abrasive and wear away tooth enamel and hurt your gums. Even if you are not using the correct brushing technique, soft bristles will still be better.

As I also thought as some other here in the discussion, that it might be only design differences for the premium Sonicare models compared to lower level models, I got curious if you could get this excellent brushing experience for less money, to recommend friends and found the Sonicare 3 series gum health HX6631 with 3 intensity levels (for around half price of Flexcare+) where Philips claimed 7 times better plaque removal compared with a regular tooth brush for the gum health at maximum cleaning mode and the 6 times for the Flexcare+ that I first had bought.
They found that both the active forms of vitamin D3 and omega 3 DHA improved the ability of the macrophages from the Alzheimer’s patients’ blood samples to absorb amyloid beta. They also noticed there was less of the cell-death that is normally triggered by amyloid beta.
Brushing action – one of the most popular features with a Sonicare toothbrush is there 31,000 strokes per minute brushing action. The reason why this method of cleaning is so effective is because as the toothbrush five plates up this high frequency, it creates double dancing abilities. Not only is the surface debris and plaque cleaned away from the tooth, but the bristles can also clean debris away from the areas that they cannot touch. The models that offer this feature include the Diamond clean, flex care platinum, flex care source, healthy way, And most of the Sonicare series toothbrushes after the basic one. It is not included on their power up model.
The Philips Sonicare toothbrush completes 62,000 bristle movements in just two minutes. Make sure every one of them is maximally effective by stocking up on extra Sonicare toothbrush heads and switching to a new one every three months. Explore what is available within the large inventory on eBay, whether you just need a single replacement head or would rather make a bulk purchase. Many Philips Sonicare toothbrush replacement heads are angled, so you can easily reach all tooth surfaces and scrub plaque easily off those hard-to-reach areas on your molars or wisdom teeth. Some feature soft bristles to clean sensitive teeth thoroughly without causing irritation. Go with Sonicare compact toothbrush heads if you own one of the brand’s smaller, travel-friendly models. Some have the bristles arranged in a circular or diamond-like shape, making them look similar to the tools that dentists use. Sonicare toothbrush heads are great to keep handy in your bathroom cabinet, and they are also practical extras to include when you give someone one of these innovative toothbrushes as a gift and want to make sure he or she has all the necessary supplies to go with it.
To brush your teeth, The Goby uses a rotating brush head similar to the Oral-B’s rather than an oscillating head like you’d find on the Philips Sonicare, and it feels like our top pick’s. Though a rotating brush head can produce some vibrations, we’ve found that the Goby is not uncomfortable to use. Goby says its rechargeable, induction-based battery will last two weeks, or 28 cycles, on a single charge. In our testing, a new unit lasted a little longer than that, running for 33 cycles. However, an earlier production model we tested, which may have been defective, lasted only 14 cycles. We prefer the Goby over the weaker Quip subscription brushes, which only vibrate softly like cheaper Oral-B Pulsar disposables.
One of the fancier brushes in the Sonicare line, the Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Connected not only has far more cleaning settings than you need (three total, each with multiple speeds), it can connect to an app on your phone via Bluetooth that’s meant to track if you’re adequately brushing every part of your mouth. (See the What about “smart” toothbrushes? section) The app shows an illustration of a mouth that starts out tinged yellow, and it gets whiter as you brush your teeth over the course of two minutes. The areas of your mouth that you fail to brush well enough will stay yellow, in theory. In reality, the location tracking wasn’t accurate enough to give us much useful information about this. The app divides the mouth into six areas, and it could reliably tell if I was neglecting either the front or back of teeth, but not if I was missing one specific tooth. The app also expects you to brush the areas of your mouth in a specific order, and if I moved the brush to a part of my mouth where the app wasn’t expecting it to be, it didn’t pick up on that. When a brush like this costs about as much as an uninsured office visit to a dentist, I’m going to stick to getting brushing advice from a professional.
If you want an electric toothbrush with every top-of-the-line feature, the Sonicare DiamondClean Smart Sonic Electric Toothbrush is an excellent choice. The toothbrush uses a simple two-button interface and includes some technique-improving features, like a pressure sensor that lets you know when you’re brushing too hard. In addition, it also has a compatible app that displays a 3D model of teeth to help track your brushing progress in real-time. It even displays an alert if your brushing strokes are too wide — a common technique flaw. The greatest downside is the $165 price tag. But if you’re looking for the most advanced toothbrush on the market, the DiamondClean is for you.
There is a really easy and clever way to check if you have a plaque build-up on your teeth. Take some food colouring – just the regular stuff found in supermarkets – and add it to a teaspoon of water. You can use this mini mixture as a plaque highlighting solution. However, you are advised to rub a little petroleum jelly on your lips first to avoid stains. You only need to gargle with the food colouring and then spit it out. You should be left with light patches of colour where the most stubborn plaque accumulations are; concentrate brushing here.
Considering that this model is priced under $80, it does come with some cool features. Included are Philips’ SmartTimer, which automatically turns the toothbrush off after 2 minutes. I am not entirely sure I loved this feature, though. In order to continue brushing, the user needs to press the start button again. No biggie, but a bit unnecessary.
Since I’ve started brushing with the Heal Thy Mouth blend and the Bass brush and doing oil pulling in the morning, my teeth are cleaner, my breath is better, and my gums are happier than they have been in a long time.
I very rarely floss. I know I should, but I don’t do it often. After switching to this brush, dentists have not told me that it looks like I don’t floss anymore! I am NOT saying you can avoid flossing by using this brush, but I take it to mean that it does a way better job than my old manual toothbrush ever did
patient screening procedures; such as assessment of oral health conditions, review of the health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck inspection, dental charting and taking blood pressure and pulse
Like most electric toothbrushes by Philips, this one also comes with a rechargeable Lithium ION battery. Once fully charged, the battery should be able to last you 3 weeks if you brush twice a day using the “clean” setting. The “deep clean” setting is likely to exhaust the battery faster because it is operating at a higher speed and producing more brush strokes per minute.
In 1898 Smith presented a lecture on his system of periodic oral prophylaxis, which required patients to attend regular visits for prophylactic treatment and education sessions around oral home care.[9]
thank you for the extremely detailed review and information. i actually purchased the kids model for myself – it actually looks quite good without the stickers and comes at a low enough price for the 30k vibration.

Their S520 toothbrush is their most expensive and highest performance one. Pursonic maintains that the S520 model is capable of reaching up to 40,000 brush strokes per minute. Our tests, however, found this toothbrush to be significantly weaker compared to pretty much any Philips electric toothbrush that is priced over $30. In our opinion, the brush strokes per minute did not exceed 15,000.
Remember, Bass brushing is all about wiggling bristles to disrupt and disorganize not-particularly-friendly bacteria that like to colonize along and under the gum line.  And while the purpose of this step isn’t specifically to remove plaque, because we are disrupting the bugs at the gum line, we will reduce plaque accumulation there as well.
The Dr. Collins Perio Toothbrush is unique because it has innovative tapered filaments that penetrate deep between the teeth and around the gums to remove plaque and debris, which offers a flossing effect. The super-slim tapered polyester bristles are less porous than nylon bristles and reduce tooth abrasion to save your tooth enamel. The bristles minimize bacterial growth and will stay put, so you won’t have to worry about them falling out or wearing out. In fact, the bristles are expected to last about 50% longer than a traditional toothbrush.
This is an all-round great tip, not just one for keeping your teeth healthy. Whether you like them or not, vegetables are a super ingredient. They are great for physical health and the teeth are no exception. Start munching on apples, celery sticks, carrots, and peppers to get your teeth looking strong and healthy in no time.
I highly don’t recommend leaving acids on teeth, however, Vitamin C on the teeth (and in general) can do wonders so you can use the sodium ascorbate form of vitamin C on your teeth. When making a glass of a gram or two with water, I sometimes swish it all around for a minute or so, a few separate times, before swallowing.
The Genius Pro 8000 comes equipped with a travel case that is also a charging station. It can charge your smartphone as well as your toothbrush using only one outlet. We found that when fully charged, the Lithium ION battery lasts 12 days when brushing twice a day.
Sonicare’s newest group of brushes are the BrushSync heads. They’re unique because they contain a microchip whose presence can be detected by BrushSync capable toothbrush handles. (Right now that’s just the models that make up the DiamondClean Smart line.)
There is no dark magic and wizardly spells surrounding these vibrating and rotating toothbrushes. They are rather simple devices powered by a small motor that makes motions at sonic speed. The purpose of these electric gadgets is to help clean teeth by using rapid and automatic bristle motions.
You say that you’ll buy replacement heads every month or two. Why so frequently? The ADA recommends replacing toothbrushes every 3-4 months. Do these heads really need to replaced that much more frequently?

My recent order arrived. The replacement brushes are so short they look like they have been cut back to the plastic head. If I use them it will be hard plastic on my teeth. I don’t know what happened to these replacement heads. I’m sending them back.
Dr. Durrant is a dentist in Sugarhouse. Of these toothbrush cleaning techniques, he recommends soaking your toothbrush in mouthwash. “It gives your toothbrush a fresh taste,” he says. If you are looking for the best dentist in Sugarhouse, Dr. Durrant is your guy. However, if you are looking for the best dentist in Utah, any one of our Platinum Dental dentists could qualify. At Platinum Dental Care, we only hire the best doctors and staff to serve our patients in Utah. The exception to the above are the Essence and PowerUp lines, which each use their own specific type of head. (We make note of all of this below. We explain Sonicare brush head options in general, on this page.)
As you’ll see below there’s a giant price difference between the top and bottom-end Sonicares. And based on this single factor alone, it’s easy enough to anticipate that while some models may share similar features and specifications, they’re probably not really equals. (It’s been our experience that some Sonicare representatives are pretty quick to harp this point when you call with questions.)
On their website Phillips claim that the EasyClean removes 2 x plaque while more expensive models remove up to 7 x plaque. Do you think this claim stands up? If it does, then, although I much prefer not to have the extra modes it looks like I must!
We’ve run across two retailers (Bed, Bath & Beyond and Target) who tend to have Sonicare models, as well as other electrics, on display. And since various models come with different brush heads, you’ll have an assortment of designs to touch and evaluate first hand. (Note: The display models don’t actually run.)
Brushing modes: Different brushing modes — like teeth whitening, gum massaging, and pro-cleaning — change the number of oscillations or vibrations per minute. However, we couldn’t find concrete evidence that these different modes were doing what they promised. In contrast, studies show that simply brushing for two minutes with proper technique, using effective toothpaste, and flossing will live up to the promise of better dental health.
Do not boil, microwave, or place your toothbrush in the dishwasher in order to sanitize it because these may damage your toothbrush. In order to sanitize your toothbrush all you need to do is soak it in an antibacterial solution for at least 10 minutes. Solutions you may use for cleaning are: antibacterial mouthwash that contains alcohol, mixture of 1/3 bleach and 2/3 water, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar.
Ok, I am also a hygienist. And for those of you who do not have dental insurance or the money to go to the dentist, the BEST way to reduce plaque and tartar is to brush, floss, and use mouth rinse 2XDay.

First, the models had to be available to the North American consumer. There are various brands that manufacture products above the average standard, but for various reasons, do not make them available in the United States. We have not included such brands and models because they would not be of use to our readers.
Its body is big to hold (probably in part due to the fact that it has the NiMH style of battery) and it’s a little bit noisier than other models. As compared to the sleeker, more-modern Sonicare designs, this unit does seem a bit old fashioned.
The sonic action, also known as the acoustic streaming action, was first introduced in 1983. Since then it has been improved to produce up to 40,000 brush strokes per minute. At such speed, the energy waves of pressure allow the above-mentioned bubbles and fluid molecules to reach areas between the teeth that are not accessible to bristles. The action of acoustic streaming is arguably said to go some 4mm beyond the reach of regular bristles. Technically, this means that sonic toothbrushes are capable of removing plaque from beneath the gum line.
W3 Premium White (introduced with DiamondClean Smart) – Helps whiten teeth in just 3 days by removing plaque and surface stains. 4 times more surface contact. Automatically selects optimal cleaning mode for the best results. (Compatible brush required)
I am currently going to school to get my associates degree. I have apply to a dental hygiene program but may take up to two years to get into, is it work the wait? Or any other care error suggestions, I am a single mom and need something with good hours!
The funny thing about electric toothbrushes is how similar a $70 model is to a $200 one. Once we get past the features mentioned above, there are precious few necessary value-adds to an expensive electric toothbrush: a travel case, a UV sanitizer (which is of negligible use), maybe a couple extra heads, a slightly sleeker body, a longer-lasting battery, auto-syncing with an app (See What about “smart” toothbrushes?). As for sonic cleaning, different cleaning modes, or pressure sensors, experts tell us they are not necessary.
This is definitely the best brush for the buck since it uses new click style and have full cleaning power. I wouldn’t consider older Essence model at all due to lack of brushhead choices and difficulty of cleaning. I’m surprised they are still selling them considering Essence+ is out.
This piece of German technology is engineered by Braun and claims to remove 300% more plaque from along the gum line when compared to a manual toothbrush. We cannot verify this claim, nor deny it. However, we can assert that the 7000 series comes equipped with a variety of options that will help you develop a better brushing technique. For instance, sensitivity sensors will stop you from brushing too hard, while the 6 independent functions will help you clean your teeth more efficiently.
Eating an ounce of an aged cheese, like Swiss or Cheddar, before meals helps neutralize the acids that affect plaque production. More aged, fragrant cheeses work the best for removing plaque. Mothernature.com explains that a component in aged cheese acts as a buffering agent. The Student Care Center at the University of Chicago suggests eating raw peanuts for the same effect, neutralizing acids in the mouth and re-mineralizing teeth.
However, you can Bass brush this surface if you use just the tip of your brush rather than try to fit the whole brush head laying on its side in your mouth.  Using just the front tip of your Bass brush, wiggle the bristles into the gum line along these few front teeth where it’s difficult to get the whole brush head angled correctly.
We’d be of the impression that at least a part of what you mention is a reference to Sonicare’s rating of the brush head that comes with the Diamond Clean as compared to the Easy Clean’s ProResults head. Those are the exact numbers (7x vs 2x) that are stated on the Sonicare website for those respective heads.
Im about to start Dental Hygienist school. But i saw some from saying that DH is not a good idea, i wont find a job, i will have to depend of the dentist for everything, i will have to work in different places to get hours working. im worried.
There are many manufacturers and hundreds of different models of electric toothbrushes available on the market. In order to pick the best seven, we had to come up with an inclusive as well as exclusive criteria and stick to it. Having said that, there are two key factors that we considered before we even begun to rank the toothbrushes.
Avoid brushing with pressure when you use baking soda as toothpaste. Also, do not use baking soda for more than five days in a row because it is abrasive and may damage your tooth enamel if you use it too often.
Do not let toothbrushes come into contact with one another. If you are storing multiple toothbrushes in one container, make sure they do not touch, as this will allow for the transfer of bacteria and bodily fluids from one brush to another.[8]
Use boiling water. If you dip your toothbrush or toothbrush head into boiling water for 5 to 10 seconds, it will effectively sanitize the bristles. This is an especially important way to get rid of illness like strep, boiling your toothbrush will help you get better faster.
I knew I didn’t trust dentists for a reason especially when they talk and spell in gangster slang, all these dentists do is ruin good healthy teeth, just try bicarbonate soda and lime, mix together to a slight paste and apply to toothbrush and brush, I found this to be most effective.

The Oral-B Genius 8000 can track the brush’s position in your mouth, thanks to on-board location sensors and access to your phone’s front-facing camera. (For more on our experience with the Genius, see “Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 Review: Who Needs a Smart Toothbrush?”) Smart capabilities aside, the brush itself, like our pick, is a reliable tool. Like other models in the Oral-B line, it has more cleaning modes than necessary and is compatible with any of the company’s replacement heads. And like the Pro 3000, the Genius has an on-board pressure sensor that flashes red when you brush too hard (no app necessary). If you travel with an electric toothbrush, you’ll appreciate the included case, which can charge the brush handle and a phone. Still, unless you find that being “watched” helps motivate you to thoroughly brush regions in your mouth you’d usually miss, you could spend half the cost of this brush for another habit-tracking smart model, such as the Pro 3000, or less than a quarter of the cost for an equally great clean with our pick.
Yes, has it. – The DiamondClean Smart, DiamondClean, FlexCare Platinum Connected, FlexCare+ (plus), HealthyWhite+ (plus), Sonicare 3 series gum health, Sonicare 2 series plaque control, Sonicare for Kids, Essence+ and Essence models all feature this mode.
Oil pulling is an age-old practice that supports oral health and helps remove plaque from teeth. Extra-virgin coconut oil is great for oil pulling because it is high in lauric acid that has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.
Fading reminder bristles are present to help you recognise when it is time to change the head (recommendation of every 3 months).  But better still, if using a Smart sonicare brush handle the brush will monitor how often the head is used and how hard you brush and remind you at precisely the right time to change.
I’ve been reviewing all of the various Philips Sonicare models to determine which features I think have value and are worth paying for and I agree with your assessment regarding the 3 series, however I have visited a retailer who has all of them on display. The one thing that jumped out at me was how noisy the 3 series is compared to the other higher end models. No mention of this was made in your assessment of the different models. Are you aware of this and if so, why would this model have a different motor that produces so much more noise. It’s a significant difference and seemed annoying.
Regular dental appointments are also critical in preventing additional plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. Your dentist will scrape and clean your teeth so they’re free of plaque and tartar. They may also perform a fluoride treatment, which can prevent and slow the growth of plaque bacteria and buildup of tartar on your teeth. This helps prevent tooth decay.

The ADA (American Dental Association) recommends replacing your toothbrush with a new one every 3-4 months. Personally, I think this is way too long. If you take your time as you brush and if you brush 3 times a day, then the bristles on your toothbrush should be looking pretty haggard at about a months time. Once the bristles get frayed and bent the effectiveness of your toothbrush is drastically lowered. Once your toothbrush isn’t performing as well as it used to, it is time to replace it.
It’s important to note that the DiamondClean is a sonic model, which can tickle or be uncomfortable for sensitive teeth. If you have sensitive teeth, go for the Oral-B 8000 would be our recommendation, even though we didn’t love its usability as much as the DiamondClean. (We actually prefer the rubber grip of the Oral-B 8000 over the smooth handle of the DiamondClean.) But the DiamondClean is definitely easier to hold and maneuver. In fact, our tester who found the DiamondClean ticklish reported that “actually for maneuverability the narrow head of the DiamondClean came in quite handy. It was easier to get around the back teeth than the bigger Oral-B head.”
Overall (primarily based on what we’ve read in the comments found on large retailer websites) it’s our impression that first-time Sonicare owners are generally satisfied with this brush (as an improvement over their manual one) but previous owners tend not to be.
First, the models had to be available to the North American consumer. There are various brands that manufacture products above the average standard, but for various reasons, do not make them available in the United States. We have not included such brands and models because they would not be of use to our readers.
Smoking is one of the leading risk factors associated with periodontal diseases.[45][46] It is thought that smoking impairs and alters normal immune responses, eliciting destructive processes while inhibiting reparative responses promoting the incidence and development of periodontal diseases.[47]
Any dentist will tell you that the key to prevent gum disease is to remove the tartar. Periogen makers claim this is the alternative to remove tartar at home it is the world’s first dental tartar remover that has been used for years by dentist.   Periogen has been tested by Nelson Labs,SLC Utah for home safety use following FDA guidelines to progressively and safely removes dental tartar.
It seems to us that you could make that case. But we’d also suggest that setting that requirement might indicate that the way the brush is being used isn’t the manner for which it was designed. We’ll also state that the purpose of our review is one of making reasonable choices, balancing cost and capabilities.
The Nimbus Microfine Toothbrush is gentle, but effective, so it’s ideal if you want softness as well as complete plaque removal. It was designed by a periodontist to protect your mouth and prevent damage to the gums and teeth, while effectively removing plaque. It has long-tapered extra fine bristles along with shorter, support bristles, which together will reach into hard-to-reach areas, ensuring optimum plaque removal. The extra soft, extra-fine, flexible bristles are supported by a regular size head and comfort-engineered, easy-to-control handle. The soft, pliable bristles make them ideal for anyone with sensitive teeth and receding gums.
I tried one of these. Yes, the frequency is traded against amplitude but the movement is so small that when the tip of a bristle is pressed against a tooth it stops moving almost entirely while the shaft of the bristle continues to move.
When it comes to finding the best toothbrush head, we learned that hard bristles is never the way to go. Dr. Ronald Rosenthal, a dentist with over 50 years of experience, explained “the softest bristles available are the best to use. You don’t need a hard bristle, you’re just going to tear up your gums.” All of our electric toothbrush models came with standard heads with soft bristles. But for those who are wondering about whether hard bristles will offer a better scrub, the answer is no.
The other problem with the Cochrane report is that though it’s conducted by a nonprofit, it includes in its survey studies that are conducted by companies testing their own toothbrush products. Unsurprisingly, we’ve never found a study published by P&G’s Oral-B that has found its electric toothbrushes inferior to another brand; the same goes for Philips’s Sonicare. This doesn’t necessarily apply to every study, but it applies to a gross majority of the toothbrush research available. But caveats about biased research aside, scientists do consistently find that an electric toothbrush is significantly better at removing plaque and reducing gingivitis in the average person’s mouth.
Chew sesame seeds. Chew a spoonful of sesame seeds, but do not swallow. Then use a dry toothbrush to brush your teeth, using the sesame seeds as a kind of toothpaste. They will help to remove plaque and polish your teeth at the same time.[6]
Dental hygienists can become members of the New Zealand Dental Hygienists’ Association.[28] The association was founded in 1993,[29] and is affiliated with the International Federation of Dental Hygienists.[30]
The best ways to prevent plaque from forming is to stick to good dental habits. Brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice per day (ideally once in the morning and once before you go to bed), and floss at least once per day.
I used a couple tubes of whitening toothpaste way back then and it had no effect. Once I switched to a Sonicare powered toothbrush using these brush heads, I saw my teeth get a couple of shades whiter
Quit being such a know-it-all. Not every one can afford to go to a dentist or even have dental insurance for that matter. If it even helps a little bit, then it’s better for them to try it than to let their teeth and gums go to pot. Just my opinion and probably many others.
However, and once again like with the 2 Series, comments we’ve read on large retailer websites seem to suggest that first-time buyers tend to be relatively satisfied with this brush (as compared to using their manual one).
Last spring I missed my semi-annual dental hygiene appointment around the same time that I discovered OraWellness, so I decided to experiment with using these products in the absence of getting my teeth cleaned, to test their effectiveness.
When you’re ready to become licensed, contact your state boards to find out what requirements need to be fulfilled. Typically, you’ll need to pass a national board exam and a state or regional clinical exam. In addition, you’ll need to be CPR-certified and undergo a background check as well as completing continuing education courses on an ongoing basis throughout your career.

This mini-cabinet is big enough for up to 5 toothbrushes or toothbrush heads. Or swap one of those and you can put your razor in here too! You can power it by either batteries (4 x AA) or using the included AC adapter. You can use it on a counter, but it is much better attached to a wall (make sure you mount it properly level for the door to work correctly). The UV light is switched on automatically on closing the door, so as soon as you return your toothbrush it gets zapped. Then the light also automatically activates every 6 hours through the day too. It only runs for 9 minutes each time though so it uses the tiniest amount of electricity – and the UV bulb is rated for 20,000 hours too, so that’s a lot of 9 minute cycles!
Sucrose is used by Streptococcus mutans bacteria to produce biofilm. The sucrose is split by glucansucrase, which allows the bacteria to use the resulting glucose for building glucan polymer film and the resulting fructose as fuel to be converted to lactic acid.
Therefore if you own the Sonicare, 2 Series plaque defence, 3 Series gum health, DiamondClean, EasyClean, FlexCare, FlexCare Platinum, FlexCare+, for Kids or HealthyWhite any of the following brush heads can be used.
“My favorite electric toothbrush is from Rotadent,” says Kourosh Maddhi, a cosmetic dentist based in Beverly Hills, Calif. “It has very soft bristles, thus minimizing damage to the gum.” The brush automatically shuts off after 2 and a half minutes of use, and the charge lasts up to 3 weeks.
It is important to have tartar removed, because it greatly increases the risk of decay and gum disease. If left untreated, chronic gingivitis and degenerative tooth loss may be the outcome. For patients with underlying health conditions, the consequences can be extremely serious. Dental scientists now know that poor oral health can contribute to the development of things like diabetes and coronary disease.
Sonicare For Kids – These toothbrush heads are to be used with the sonicare for kid’s rechargeable toothbrush. The brush heads are designed to fit better in children’s mouths and as a result, they are smaller than the standard adult toothbrush heads. In addition, these are softer brush heads. If you have particularly soft gums or if you have sensitive teeth, you could even use these brush heads for your own use as the soft bristle ensure a more gentle clean.
They obviously took a step back in the 2 Series to have a stylish entry level product at a very attractive price. Many will still be happy with it considering the price and comparing it to a manual toothbrush. I also notice the 2 Series ships with the Plaque Control head. This head is small. I had noticed when I moved to the slightly larger DiamondClean head, the 2 Series felt even more underpowered. Therefore, if someone is going to use the 2 Series, I recommend sticking with the Plaque Control head, it makes the most out of the lower power 2 Series.
I’m a dental hygienist and have worked in areas volunteering including in shelters where people cannot afford “regular” dental visits. But please please do not run anything acidic on your teeth and leave it there for it to scientifically proven eat away at your teeth. Baking soda does have a toothpaste but large amounts causes microabrasions in the teeth, potentially causing tooth damage and increased staining. Light toothbrushing half on the tooth half on the gums with a basic fluoridated toothpaste , floss, and listerine mouth rinse will do the tricks. These are scientifically proven recommendations. Tartar builds up from increased minerals in the saliva, it’s natural but it also builds up underneath the gums which staying there for years can cause bone loss and infection in the body. Try to go if you can save up the 120 cleaning at least once a year, and if not do your best but be careful wielding sharp picks in your mouth it took me three years of school to learn that skill 😉
I’ve decided to go all-out and use a combination of electric (sonic) toothbrush and a Waterpik. I noticed that Waterpik sells a combo package that appears to be targeted at consumers like myself. Do you have any comments on the Waterpik brand sonic toothbrush?
There is no proof that you even need to completely sanitize your toothbrush. So you may skip this step if you want to. If you are a little paranoid and just want to ensure that your toothbrush stays clean then sanitize it in solution about once a week.
Secondly, in my own case as well as my parents and wife, we saw marked improvement in our teeth when using the powered brushes. My wife and I use the Sonicare, and I can tell you (again, as the son of a dentist) I used to brush manually for a good long time, and the Sonicare STILL improved things. This makes sense as it’s a function of total-strokes… a 31kHz Sonicare is going to produce more strokes over 2 minutes than a manual brush. Again, my dentist can confirm – I had bleeding gums every cleaning, now I never have them. So it’s not just timer dependent.

Taking steps to naturally reduce stress and make healthy lifestyle changes is best and includes; quitting smoking, keeping alcohol use to a minimum, participate in yoga and meditation to reduce stress and just taking time to relax. Try to avoid medications to reduce stress if at all possible, they can have side-effects or be habit forming.
Hi, I’ve been a dental hygienist for almost 9 years and even though I’m currently in the midst of re-negotiating my pay and benefits with my employer, I have been very satisfied with my career overall. I did start out working for different offices but as of the last 6 years or so I’m only at one office and sometimes get calls to sub for another office (for a hygienist on vacation or something). I live in California and my lowest annual income was $68K and that was for working about 3 days a week. Last year I worked 4 days a week and made almost $89K. As a single parent of a daughter about to go off to college I can honestly say it is a great career if you want to be on your own two feet. I get 3 days of sick pay, 4 days of vacation and profit sharing. I was offered medical but it was too expensive so I got my own individual plans. Every career has it’s trade offs, burn outs, complaints and aches and pains but I would pick this one all over again if given the choice.
I used my first Sonicare for two years but the rubberized base became moldy and smelly and I needed to replace it. The second I used for 4 years and it became useless when the brush head would not stay on the base during use.
Drinking dark colored beverages such as wine or beer may stain the teeth leading to a discolored smile. Drinking high-concentration alcohol can lead to a dry mouth, with little saliva to protect the teeth from plaque and bacteria.[44]
Occupational employment projections are developed for all states by Labor Market Information (LMI) or individual state Employment Projections offices. All state projections data are available at www.projectionscentral.com. Information on this site allows projected employment growth for an occupation to be compared among states or to be compared within one state. In addition, states may produce projections for areas; there are links to each state’s websites where these data may be retrieved.
Good to know. I am in California too and thinking of becoming a RDH. I also considered sonography and nursing but think this might be the right choice. I am currently a massage therapist and it’s just too physically demanding and also super inconsistent as it is not a necessity but a luxury to most people. I hear that RDH is physical too but I feel maybe less so? Or possibly just different. I love the idea of not working 5 days as I do lots of things and the hours are way better than nursing and sonography. At this point in life I would prefer not to work late nights, on call or all weekends and holidays. There has to be a balance in everything.
As an alternative to the Philips Sonicare, we’ve also had our eye on the Oral-B White Pro 1000 ($39.97; amazon.com), which is comparable in price. Also a best-seller on Amazon, with a 4.4 out of 5-star rating, the White Pro 1000 is another good option for those looking to up their oral hygiene game. According to Oral-B, this toothbrush can “remove 300% more plaque along the gumline than a regular manual toothbrush.”
California dental hygienists, on the other hand, are permitted to perform all of the above job duties under the general supervision of a licensed dentist, with the exception of the administration of local anesthesia, the administration of nitrous oxide, and soft tissue curettage, which must be performed under direct supervision.
hahahahahaha. my dentist recommends Sonicare, and I’ve had two in my lifetime now (I’m on my second one, which is almost 5 years old and going strong – the one before that lasted I think 7 years?) worth every penny, especially when purchased at Costco.
A Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene is typically a four-year program. Students entering a bachelor’s degree program are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent, but many dental hygienists with an associate degree or certification enter the bachelor’s degree programs to expand their clinical expertise and help advance their careers.[citation needed]

Get regular, professional cleanings. Even if you implement the most rigorous oral hygiene routine at home, you can still benefit from a visit to the dentist every six months or so. Only a dentist can give you the thorough, professional cleaning which will remove the most hard-to-reach plaque and stubborn tartar.
Everyone develops plaque because bacteria are constantly growing in our mouths, which is not necessarily easy to see. Plaque that is not removed from around the gum line can cause inflammation and irritation to the gums around your teeth, leading to gingivitis (red, swollen, bleeding gums). If gingivitis is not treated, it can progress to periodontal disease and, possibly, tooth loss.
If you want a powerful, yet gentle, clean, the Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Pro-Flex Medium Toothbrush is right for you. It offers a superior clean thanks to two flexing sides that adjust to the curves and contours of your teeth. It cleans along the gumline, but is gentle on enamel and sensitive gums. It removes up to 93% of plaque in hard-to-reach areas and up to 34% more plaque along the gumline, ensuring a cleaner mouth and fresher breath. It also reduces gingivitis and removes surface stains, providing a better clean than a traditional manual toothbrush. In fact, it promises to provide better oral health in only two weeks.
Back in March 2010, Consumer Reports performed its own tests for plaque removal and concluded, “[T]he two priciest brushes removed 75 percent or more of plaque in our tests, on average.” In the years following those tests, two of the top models have been discontinued and replaced by similar ones, and one has been recalled; as of May 2016, CR no longer tests toothbrushes at all. GHI’s recommendations don’t say much and do not explain whether expensive features are really necessary.
Prior to this, dental hygienists were first domestically trained in 1974 for use in the New Zealand Defence Force. The one-year course was taught by the Royal New Zealand Dental Corp at the Burnham army base outside Christchurch.[12] Hygiene training was briefly offered at the Wellington School for Dental Nurses in 1990 as 2 week a supplement to Dental Therapy students training.[12] However, this was quickly discontinued.[12]
The bristles on this brush head are designed to be angles and trimmed strategically so that you can get a better clean and this toothbrush head has been designed especially to improve the health of your gums. In comparison to a manual toothbrush, this brush head will be able to improve your gums by up to 100%. You would not be able to enjoy such healthy gums if you chose a manual brush, making this brush head a great investment.

Motor-powered toothbrushes with 30,000+ brush strokes per minute will save you time. They will truly clean the visible parts of the teeth, as well as between teeth that are not tightly squeezed. Where they will fail, however, is reaching the deep and dark parts of teeth that are very close to each other.
Dental hygienists can receive their necessary education with either a two-year associate degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. Each degree will yield the clinical training necessary to work in the field; however, a bachelor’s degree program will provide more in-depth studies and practice in the field.
Yes, we’ll concede that a few people may have special circumstances (like the need for a “sensitive” mode). But for the vast majority users, the best, most effective, most efficient brushing mode they can use is the full-power one.
W3 Premium White (introduced with DiamondClean Smart) – Helps whiten teeth in just 3 days by removing plaque and surface stains. 4 times more surface contact. Automatically selects optimal cleaning mode for the best results. (Compatible brush required)
Graduate degrees in the field of dental hygiene are typically two-year programs and are completed after the bachelor’s degree. Common graduate courses in dental hygiene include Healthcare Management, Lab Instruction, and Clinical Instruction.[citation needed]
I dint know any hygienist that makes anywhere near that amount of money! Maybe if they live in a state what’re the cost of living is higher…so pay is higher. But that just washes out if your cost of living is very high. Michigan hygienists might make 48-59k working full time
To perform an “oil pull,” you swish about one tablespoon of coconut or olive oil around in your mouth for 20 to 30 minutes (much longer than you’d swish around typical mouthwash). Coconut oil is believed to be particularly beneficial because it contains fatty acids such as lauric acid, a substance with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.
A point of order about the word “sonic”: Per advertising from Sonicare that is now close to two decades old, some people take this to mean that sonic toothbrushes “knock off plaque” with “sound waves.” This is not an effect proven in any research.
The Sonicare for Kids is our top pick for this category because it both trains and encourages kids to brush properly. In addition, the handle is closer in size to adult models than the Oral-B Disney’s, which means it isn’t too big now, and your kids won’t outgrow this $40 toothbrush too quickly. Instead, they’ll be able to improve their technique and become familiar with using a traditionally-sized electric toothbrush as they develop more dexterity.
Store your toothbrush at least 2 feet (0.61 m) from the toilet. When you flush, tiny water particles containing fecal matter escape the toilet and may land on your toothbrush if it is too close to the toilet.[4] While there is insufficient evidence that these trace amounts of bacteria cause illness, it is best to be safe.[5]
Even though the above mechanisms can partly or fully help to remove plaque and tartar at some point you should see a  dental professional because he or she would be able to see dental problem you cannot recognize.
Registered nurses (RNs) provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.
Thanks for your very helpful articles on the Sonicare models. They were really useful for cutting through the fat so to speak. I ended up purchasing the series 3 gum health. Unfortunately I didn’t realize that the user can’t disable smart timer or quadpacer on this model if desired (others with mode button can disable quad pacer). I also didn’t realize that the toothbrush shuts off after two minutes (smarttimer). Not sure if i just missed out on this, or if it needs to be added. Not a huge problem; i may actually need these timers to brush properly for at least two minutes.
We also looked at reviews from popular American stores, such as Target and Walmart. These stores are good because they allow consumers to freely express their opinion and return merchandise if it is not up to their standards.
A 2008 study published in The Journal of Clinical Dentistry analyzed five clinical studies and concluded that baking soda paste or powder can more efficiently remove plaque than non-baking soda products.
Sonicare brushing features – An outline of the various brushing modes different Sonicare models have, and what we think of each of them. It explains the importance of having the 31,000 strokes-per-minute brushing action.
less than a month ago two top of field dentists and periodontics were on radio after a professional conference. Now after for years saying floss , floss, floss, they say the research has shown flossing either has no benefit or the benefit is negligible. Today on BBC the dentists were saying that dental check of every 6 months is excessive! basically so called science is not exact in anything. All the things which were good six months ago, today may proven are not good for us!
Electric toothbrushes offer a good solution to this. They are not only fun to use, but they also employ the correct brush movements that our hands often tend to disregard when we clean our teeth manually.
This is great! I used to boil water and put my toothbrush in there for awhile, but these methods seem much better. Wish I would have known about them BEFORE I got my self-sanitizing one! Thanks for sharing. 🙂

Hi, I am currently a high school student who is interested in pursuing the career of a dental hygienist. I wanted to know if there are any health benefits with this career for example retirement benefits, paid vacations, medical benefits ect..?
Attending an accredited dental hygiene school is necessary to become licensed in your state. The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) reviews a school’s course descriptions, objectives, learning experiences and curriculum content, among other things. This process ensures a school meets high standards and students can rest assured they’re receiving a valuable education.

Which one is better? The short answer is, whichever one you are most likely to use twice a day as directed. If you follow your dentist’s instructions and you brush your teeth twice a day for 2 to 3 minutes, you will see positive results.
First, the models had to be available to the North American consumer. There are various brands that manufacture products above the average standard, but for various reasons, do not make them available in the United States. We have not included such brands and models because they would not be of use to our readers.
I know you mean well however, I don’t think you are able to wrap your head around the fact that in some rural areas in the US there are no dental schools or affordable dental care available. Full stop. Considering the time and money required to actually visit a dentist when you are working a minimum or low wage job in areas with limited or no public transportation options, dental cleaning one or two times a year are not feasible. Don’t criticize people for seeking other options.
After doing the above calculations, you’ll find that a Sonicare has a frequency of about 258 hz, which is actually toward the bottom of the audible range given above. Just as a point of interest, this same frequency in musical terms (the hum you hear) is about Middle C on the piano.
I got mine when I think they must have had only one model. Last time I tried to replace the brush, I had no idea of which one to get. I would also like to replace the unit, since the battery doesn’t hold well any more. Now I have some idea of where to start.
We also looked at reviews from popular American stores, such as Target and Walmart. These stores are good because they allow consumers to freely express their opinion and return merchandise if it is not up to their standards.

On the other end of the spectrum, dental hygienists in Kansas have a much broader list of allowable job duties, with most functions permitted to be performed under the general supervision of a licensed dentist. The only function that needs to be completed under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist in Kansas is the administration of local anesthesia, and the only function not allowed to be performed is the placement of sutures.

I’m a hygienist and when I was in school all my patients had free dental care and my “student loan” paid for most of it we also went to low income schools taught kids how to floss and brush and gave supplies. So give professions some credit it’s not just professions want your money. I share my education to keep people healthy. But some info here isn’t correct. Baking soda and peroxide are fine you’re okay to use.. acidic will cause perminent damage to teeth overtime. And the scaling people cause notching and damage teeth if not done correctly I see it all the time. And you aren’t getting under the gums which is the most damaging part. So if you try you can find schools for free these students need clinic hours. SJVC is one for example. Your teeth and health are worth the time. Floss and brush. Watch youtube videos to see it done correctly. Home remedies are fine but this one isn’t accurate.
Carol, I hope you are feeling better. I’ll say a prayer for you but it’s already a year later so I hope you are doing well. I hear coconut oil and tumeric powder together are also good to brush your teeth with and leave on for 5 minutes, then brush teeth as normal. I do it once in a while, they say twice a week is good.
Dental hygienist instructors train new dental hygienists at academic institutions such as community colleges and universities. They instruct students in classrooms and laboratory settings in methods to remove tartar and stains, take and process x-rays, apply sealants and fluorides, as well as proper oral care and tracking treatment plans and patient care. These instructors must be able to work with a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds, responding to their questions and ensuring they are learning course materials. Dental hygiene instructors must also maintain good student records, as well as stay up to date on developments within their field.
However, the job site career builder conducted a survey and found most Americans would feel successful making 70,000 dollars a year, and other studies have found that Americans are happy with a salary of 75,000 dollars a year.
Brush in small circular or tooth-wide motions. Many people brush across their teeth in large sweeping motions. However, Dr. Glassman explained “you can improve your brushing technique by using a circular motion.” Our other experts agreed, with Dr. Friedman adding, “gently move the brush back and forth in short tooth-wide strokes.” Note: the DiamondClean will actually alert you when you move past tooth-wide strokes.
Mixing them will cancel the cleaning power of the vinegar since mixing them causes a chemical reaction that eliminates both the vinegar and baking soda. Mixing them creates a type of salt (not table salt), water, and gas (bubbles).
I never felt that they would thoroughly brush my teeth. After using it for a week, I was amazed at how well these bristle felt. These replacement bristles for the Sonicare toothbrush were not too soft yet abrasive enough to clean my teeth. I now have m entire family hooked on using these replacement brush heads. There toothbrush heads also come with a blue indicator bristle that will fade over time, then it will be known when it is time to be replaced. Well worth the investment in my family’s teeth.
I have a similar mixture to whiten teeth, but I never imagined it would work on tarter buildup! I use a slight variation of this recipe as a face & body scrub. This is a great tip. I’m still going to see the dentist, but if can get rid of some of tarter & whiten my teeth, maybe I won’t get fussed at! Thanks for sharing! Any other great home remedies, like for cellulite, wrinkles, etc? ?Rea
Use your eyes to protect your teeth. “When you can visually see discoloration, buildup or matting of the bristles, it’s time to change the toothbrush,” says Dr. Kahn. “It should look clean and straight.” Rinse well to dislodge any chunks of residual toothpaste.
Unlike dental assistants, whose job duties must generally be performed under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist, dental hygienists perform much of their work independently, with only general supervision from a licensed dentist.
As the son of a dentist (sounds bad, doesn’t it!) I can attest to people not brushing enough… I saw this many times, self-reported from patients. The timer helps, but I don’t believe that this is the only factor.
Because dental hygienists are in such demand, you can earn a relatively good salary right away. The median annual pay for dental hygienists is $68,250 – or $32.81 per hour – according to BLS, and it can vary based upon experience and whether you are a full- or part-time employee.

My sister has been flossing and using Plax  for 10 years now because she was so afraid of deep cleaning .Whenever the family gets her to the dentist because she is so scared of them they are always surprised what good condition her teeth is in. Plax is made of an ingredient called tetrasodium pyrophosphate acts as a tartar control agent, serving to remove calcium and magnesium from saliva and thus preventing them from being deposited on teeth. Plax does not work if used alone. For success, you must rinse your mouth for 30 second to 1 minute before brushing and flossing to loosen up the plaque if you have thick layers of plaque it can take about 4 to 6 week to see success. Some studies  on Plax mouthwash was done but the result was inconclusive but did show some minimal removal of plaque. According to a number of customer on Amazon it does work for them. Check it out.
Tartar, also known as calculus, is a form of dental plaque that has hardened. This hardening occurs when your saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) deposit minerals. Tartar is composed of a combination organic components (cells and their extracellular matrices) and inorganic substances. Its inorganic component largely consists of four types of calcium phosphate crystals: octocalcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite, whitlockite, and brushite.
The Australian Healthcare and Hospital Association’s (AHHA) most recent evidence brief [5]) suggests that dental check-ups should be conducted once every 3 years for adults, and 1 every 2 years for children. It has been documented that dental professionals frequently advise for more frequent visits, but this advice is contraindicated by evidence suggesting that check up frequency should be based on individual risk factors, or the AHHA’s check-up schedule. Professional cleaning includes tooth scaling, tooth polishing, and, if tartar has accumulated, debridement; this is usually followed by a fluoride treatment. However, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) stated in 1998 that there is no evidence that scaling and polishing only above the gums provides therapeutic value, and cleaning should be done under the gums as well.[6] The Cochrane Oral Health Group found only three studies meeting the criteria for inclusion in their study and found little evidence in them to support claims of benefits from supragingival (above the gum) tooth scaling or tooth polishing.[7]
Of course, the big question is, how well does it clean teeth? Very well apparently! My teeth were noticeably whiter after 1 week using only the standard cross action head. I will likely try the whitening head at some point in accordance with the whitening program in the app. The brush head has visible movement, in contrast with the Sonicare which has more movements, but they are smaller movements, and only linear movements.
While we love to dive into interesting, important and sometimes obscure topics like how oil pulling helps heal leaky gut and how smiling contributes to greater immune expression, today let’s go back to basics and discuss one of the most frequently asked questions we get around how to brush our teeth.
You say an inductive charger, something the overpriced model has, is something buyers don’t need. You may have been mislead by the packaging on that particular model. Your top two picks, and probably all rechargable brushes, use inductive chargers.
We will promote the evolution of dental hygiene by exploring and implementing new methods and ideas. Mindfulness, awareness and presence practices are integrated for the development of emotional intelligence and the cultivation of compassionate, empathetic and professional behavior.
To quantify this for Sonicare brush heads, a Philips “data on file” paper (Jenkins 2010) compared the plaque-removing effectiveness of new and used (3 month old) ProResults heads. They found that the new ones removed 28% more plaque.
I just got the Oral B Pro 1000 recommended here last week ($22 on Amazon after a $10 off coupon!), and I wanted to let you know it does actually have the 30 second indicator in addition to the 2 minute indicator. Perhaps this is a feature they’ve added since this review was written. My toothbrush does a short stutter every 30 seconds and a longer stutter at the 2 minute mark.

There are some interesting points in time in this article but I don’t know if I see all of them center to heart. There is some validity but I will take hold opinion until I look into it further. Good article , thanks and we want more! Added to FeedBurner as well. cara mengatasi anyang-anyangan
This model may not be heavy on the wallet, but it is heavy on the hand. At 7.4 ounces, this was one of the heaviest toothbrushes that we tested. We were hoping that this is because Philips has added a bigger Lithium ION battery that will last longer. But, we were wrong. After fully charged, the battery lasted only 7 days.
On their website Phillips claim that the EasyClean removes 2 x plaque while more expensive models remove up to 7 x plaque. Do you think this claim stands up? If it does, then, although I much prefer not to have the extra modes it looks like I must!

Vitamin D3 is essential for bone and immune system health. The main source of the vitamin, which is made in the skin, is sunshine. Deficiencies may occur during winter months or in those who are indoors most of the time, such as people with Alzheimer’s disease.
Tartar formation isn’t all that well understood. It’s most common in areas of the mouth with a lot of saliva flow, such as the maxillary molars and mandibular incisors. It can form below the gumline, causing irritation and swelling in the gums. Subgingival tartar is composed of fossilized anaerobic bacteria, whose organic structure has been replaced with calcium phosphate salts, along with more calcium phosphate salts. The reason it builds up is electrical charge. Calcium phosphate salts are unstable ions. Once a layer of fossilized bacteria has attached to the teeth below the gumline, other ionized materials are naturally attracted to it. This results in a substance similar to concrete, with small calcium phosphate salt particles filling in the gaps between the fossilized bacteria.
As testament of this, over the years we noticed that every Sonicare manual we’ve seen clearly states something similar to: “When the Sonicare is used in clinical studies, the default 2-minute Clean mode must be selected.”
Make a homemade toothpaste. If you prefer to stay away from the array of chemicals found in most store-bought toothpastes, it is possible to make your own plaque-busting natural version, using just a few simple ingredients. Combine 1/2 cup of coconut oil with 2 to 3 tablespoons of baking soda, 2 little packets of stevia powder and 20 drops of your chosen essential oil, such as peppermint or cinnamon. Store your homemade toothpaste in a small glass jar and use just like regular toothpaste.[8]
Saline (warm salty water) is usually recommended after procedures like dental extractions. In a study completed in 2014, warm saline mouthrinse was compared to no mouthrinse in preventing alveolar osteitis (dry socket) after extraction. In the group that was instructed to rinse with saline, the prevalence of alveolar osteitis was less than in the group that did not.[48]
Ever wondered how much toothpaste you’re actually supposed to squeeze out? Our dentists explained that a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is all you need for a healthy brush and to prevent dental damage. But don’t rinse afterwards. Rinsing after brushing actually dilutes or washes away the fluoride from toothpaste that’s helping to prevent tooth decay. Instead of rinsing, dental experts recommend that you simply spit out any remaining toothpaste after brushing.
The sanitizer reviews above will suit almost everyone. But there is one other option that a lot of people like too. The Steripod toothbrush sanitizer (get them here) – which is a totally different approach. There is no UV light, no batteries, just a little ‘pod’ that you clip onto the head of your brush after using it.

To us, battery isn’t an insignificant consideration. But if a particular model met our needs in all other ways, we’d let this one slip by. This page discusses the subject of battery options in greater detail.
Sugars are commonly associated with dental cavities. Other carbohydrates, especially cooked starches, e.g. crisps/potato chips, may also damage teeth, although to a lesser degree (and indirectly) since starch has to be converted to glucose by salivary amylase (an enzyme in the saliva) first. Sugars that are higher in the stickiness index, such as toffee, are likely to cause more damage to teeth than those that are lower in the stickiness index, such as certain forms of chocolate or most fruits.
However, unlike the other toothbrushes above, Sonicare Essence features an Easy Start program. It’s ideal for those, for who it’s the first electric toothbrush. This program allows to gradually get used to it.
Dental hygienists in the western United States reported the highest average wages as of 2011. Those in California made the most, an average of $91,010 a year, followed closely by dental hygienists working in the District of Columbia, who earned an average yearly salary of $90,500. Washington state ranked third in dental hygienist incomes, an average of $90,420 a year, followed by Nevada at $88,620 and Alaska at $86,310. Alabama reported an average salary of $44,900 a year, the lowest in the nation.
If not, it can get worse, to the point where pockets form between the gums and teeth and get infected by bacteria. That’s called periodontitis. Your immune system sends chemicals to fight back and they mix with bacteria and the stuff it puts out. The resulting stew can damage the bones and tissues that hold your teeth in place. Also, some studies link the bacteria in gum disease to heart disease and other health problems.

You would be surprised at how many natural home remedies there are for plaque removal. For example, did you know figs are great at fighting bacteria and other nasties on teeth? You just have to eat a handful (three or four) figs all at the same time. Chew them up slowly and deliberately, to give them as much exposure to the gums and teeth as possible. The chewing will kickstart the salivary glands and, as saliva contains antibacterial properties, this is only ever a bad thing for plaque and tartar accumulations.
Tartar is a hard deposit of mineralized plaque which adheres to any type of tooth surface : enamel, dentin or cement. Your dentist or hygienist are the only persons capable of removing entirely any trace of tartar, leaving a smooth surface after scaling. They will be using an ultrasonic tip which is easy to use and causes no pain for the patient.
There are many products on the market now that claim to sanitize and kill all the bacteria on your toothbrush. There are antibacterial rinses, UV (ultraviolet) Light Sanitizers, and even antibacterial bristles are found on some toothbrushes. Do they work? Some of them do a good job of killing bacteria while some of them do not live up to their claims. A better question is: Is completely sanitizing a toothbrush every time even necessary? Studies have shown that some of these products do kill bacteria, but there is not a single study that also shows using any toothbrush sanitizer will reduce your risk of getting sick.
The unique characteristic of a sonic toothbrush is the way it creates a secondary cleaning action (one that helps to clean beyond where the brush’s bristles actually touch) due to the manner in which it agitates the fluids that surround your teeth. (Here’s how this works.)
The Dental Hygienist Course in India is a full-time 2-year diploma course. The Dental Hygienist course is regulated and controlled by the Dental Council of India. After completion of the course a dental hygienist should be register with a state dental council. Any person who is a registered dental hygienist in a one state may practice as such in any other. The Federation of Indian Dental Hygienists Association (FIDHA)is the primary national body representing the dental hygienist profession in India, however some state dental hygienist associations also work at state level. In India, dental hygienists do not need to be employed by a dentist but can have their own clinic.
When it comes to good oral hygiene, electric toothbrushes usually focus on three things: plaque removal, gum health and whitening. So a good starting point when making your choice is figuring out which area you want to focus on – and we help you on this below.

less than a month ago two top of field dentists and periodontics were on radio after a professional conference.
Tartar or calculus is formed when calcium and phosphate bind in your mouth they form crystals these crystal harden and thus you have tartar . Using toothpaste with tetrasodium pyrophosphate  helps to prevent tartar from forming by removing calcium and magnesium from our saliva inhibiting the formation of calculus. A clinical study on tartar was done over 12 week period using toothpaste with tetrasodium pyrophosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate  on 73 subjects who had a Volpe Manhold Calculus Index of 7.0 and greater. After the twelve weeks, the subjects saw a 43.5 % reduction in Calculus Index score. Triclosan is an antimicrobial which clinical studies shows kills the germs between our teeth and gum but some dentists believe this is not that important ingredient once we keep our mouth clean. These toothpaste can be easily be found in your local store check them out.
I always had great teeth but I took it for granted. I then lost a tooth and after all the grief of that happening I only brush with the recommended Sonicare brushes. I brush twice a day, floss every single tooth daily and use antiseptic mouthwash for at least 30 seconds. It must say antiseptic on the bottle. My teeth have been perfect now for years.
High strokes per minute: Electric toothbrushes can move as rapidly as 40,000 strokes per minute. While higher stroke numbers can make an electric toothbrush more effective than a manual brush, Dr. Friedman explained “at some point, extra brushstrokes aren’t really adding any benefits. [Around] 8,000 brushstrokes is enough to achieve the maximum level of plaque removal.” In simple terms, higher numbers look nice, but moving from 8,000 (oscillating) to 31,000 or 40,000 (sonic) brushstrokes won’t really have an effect on your teeth and gums.

Dental hygienists work primarily in dentist’s offices, removing plaque and tartar from the teeth of patients. Dental hygienists also take X-rays, apply fluoride and sealants to patient’s teeth, and instruct patients about how to care for their teeth. Most hygienists have an associate degree in dental hygiene, and must become licensed before obtaining work.
Overall, we found the oscillating-format Oral-B toothbrushes to be louder and more sonically grating than the vibrating format of the Sonicare brushes we tested. Without a point of comparison, it’s possible our slight annoyance would go away as we got used to it.

Unlike plaque, tartar can’t be removed by brushing or flossing. To get rid of it, you need to visit your dentist, who will use special instruments to remove it in a technique called “scale and polish.” Scaling refers to the removal or picking off of tartar from the teeth, while polishing helps smooth and shine the teeth afterwards.
The Sonicare 2 Series isn’t without perks, though. When you first start using it, the Sonicare starts off with lower vibrations in order to ease you through the adjustment experience. Our tester appreciated this and told us “the fact that it gently eases into cleaning at full force over 14 sessions makes the experience feel more thoughtful.” We agree, and appreciate that the Sonicare focuses on getting you more comfortable with a proper brushing experience.
1. The system is designed for only one user. When you insert your brush into the cleaning station, it takes about 8 hours to dry. So if you have a two-person household like me, you’ll have to purchase a second unit. Swapping out the brushes really defeats the purpose of cleaning the brush and then leaving it exposed to germs while cleaning the other. Additionally, that is too much of a hassle.
Based on comments we’ve seen posted on our and retailer websites, it seems that there’s a general consensus that this brush is a step above the Sonicare 3 in terms of power and refinement, and therefore currently occupies a transition point in the Sonicare line up.
Both guava fruit and leaves are considered excellent antiplaque agents to help remove plaque accumulated on the teeth and gums. Plus, they have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that help reduce swelling and pain in the gums.
If you had read a lot of reviews of Sonicare toothbrushes at Amazon, like I did,I don’t think you would be recommending the Series 2 and 3.Apparently,from what I can tell,Philips came out with these, which are lower quality, much noisier, more vibration,to offer a lower price point.Seems like the best choices would be the older, proven Essence or higher end, like Healthy White, etc. Also, don’t drop the Healthy White,or similar models,on the brush end or a metal piece will break(very common problem) and Philips won’t sell you that part. So,my conclusion is that the older Essence with the screw on head would be the absolute most reliable, best choice.
I have never experienced electric tooth brushes until i come across this post. Anyhow i feel they are doing great in arriving at the corners, which would be useful than manual brushing. Your share truly helped me to come up with good knowledge. I generally lean toward the

Since 2006,[12] New Zealand dental hygienists are trained at either University of Otago in Dunedin (at the country’s only Dental School) or at Auckland University of Technology.[24] The qualifications (Bachelor of Oral Health at Otago, Bachelor of Health Science in Oral Health at AUT) enable graduates to register and practise as both a dental hygienist and a dental therapist.[12]

In many ways we’re probably too critical. But we have a high regard for sonic toothbrushes in general, and Sonicare in particular, and just feel that the features they offer should be more about substance than hype.
When in doubt, throw it out. The suggestions on when to replace a toothbrush vary according to manufacturer. Keep it easy and follow the ADA guidelines — replace it every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed. If you have a fungal, yeast or viral infection in your mouth, replace your brush at the beginning of treatment and again at the end.
Sorry I’m a bit confused. Are you saying you’re not pleased with our review because we didn’t include the voltage information and whether or not the toothbrush will work while traveling abroad? Not being snarky, just trying to get a better idea of why you’re disappointed with this.

High school students interested in becoming dental hygienists should take courses in biology, chemistry, and math. Most dental hygiene programs also require applicants to complete prerequisites, which often include college-level courses. Specific requirements vary by school.
Sonicare also makes an electric toothbrush specifically designed for kids. The cool part about this toothbrush is that it has some neat features like the KidTimer and KidPacer to encourage kids to brush well for the dentist recommended time.
The Quip is a no-frills toothbrush with a single brush head style and a simple timer that indicates each 30-second interval, shutting off at the two-minute mark. This is the only brush we tested that uses replaceable batteries instead of a built-in rechargeable battery. Quip has an unusual business model—the only way to get a new brush head is through the company’s website, which encourages a subscription that sends a replacement every three months. Though you can purchase individual brush heads separately for $5 with free shipping, if you need a spare head you can’t just run to the store to get a new one. (And you’d better keep spare or rechargeable AAAs around.) The overall pricing structure is a bit confusing, and the store page defaults to the more expensive metal brushes, but toggling the interface gives you access to the slightly less expensive plastic brushes. Although the stylish design (of the more expensive metal model) and the quiet operation are both impressive, we found the vibrations to be weak. The Quip could be a nice option for someone who travels a lot and prefers the freedom of no charger, but it doesn’t have the brush head options or wide availability of our main pick.
We agree that the Sensonic is a good brush, hence we have included it on this page. But we’ve given it a lesser positioning because this page is specifically about Sonicare toothbrushes and ciphering through their line up.
So we looked for, at minimum, brushes with a two-minute timer, but still wanted to test higher-end brushes to compare their usability against that of the simplest models. We eliminated brushes without rechargeable batteries because loose batteries are a hassle and a waste. We also eliminated models that were reviewed as loud or having either short battery life or a too-small range of compatible brush heads. If a brush was compatible with a wide range of brush heads, that was a small point in its favor.
Did you have a fascination with the tooth fairy as a child? Or always looked forward to going to the dentist? Then perhaps a career as a dental hygienist is right for you. Dental hygienists play an integral role in every dentist’s office, and are responsible for everything from cleaning teeth to taking x-rays and helping patients feel at ease. Check out the pros and cons of pursuing this profession:
Based on comments we’ve seen posted on our and retailer websites, it seems that there’s a general consensus that this brush is a step above the Sonicare 3 in terms of power and refinement, and therefore currently occupies a transition point in the Sonicare line up.
Spend more than $30 or so, and you typically get a quadrant timer. This element, though a nice option, isn’t strictly necessary unless you like that style of brushing or your dentist has noticed that you struggle with brushing evenness. “The time spent in each quadrant is just an aid to help ensure that you brush long enough to remove plaque on every tooth at the gum line and chewing surfaces, assuming you’re brushing properly,” said dentist Matthew Messina, a consumer advisor for the ADA. “Plus, we are not aware of studies that show brushing longer in smaller areas has an added beneficial effect in removing plaque.”
In my experience they are just as bad in terms of reliability, I’ve bought five of these 1000 series brushes in the last four years. That said, I still feel like they’re the best toothbrush out there for the money. Without user replaceable batteries, these things just inevitably die.
As mentioned earlier, sodium hypochlorite, a common household bleach, can be used as a 0.2% solution for 30 seconds two or three times a week as a cheap and effective means of combating harmful bacteria. The commercial product is 5% or 6%, so this requires diluting the product by a factor of about 30 (half a tablespoon in a full glass of water). The solution will lose activity with time and may be discarded after one day.[23]
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) adds that soaking your toothbrush could lead to cross-contamination if you use the same disinfectant over a period of time, or share disinfectant between users.[14]
Naturally, there are lots of online sales and deals out there which might make certain options more sensible. However, based on what I can gather from the Sonicare website and other sources the Sonicare EasyClean is the best deal because it has all the necessary features and can accept all the Snap-On brush heads. If you are looking to upgrade to some cooler features, I would opt for the FlexCare model with the UV sterilizer for brush heads. The 3 brushing modes and 2 brushing routines are identical to the 5 brushing modes of the FlexCare +, but the FlexCare is a bit easier on your wallet. Although UV sterilization of toothbrushes hasn’t been shown to make a significant difference in oral bacteria, it might hold some benefits for individuals with extremely high caries risks or aggressive gum disease since it will keep the toothbrush head a bit cleaner.
Keeping the Aura Clean Toothbrush in first class condition takes place within the Aura Clean Base Station. Inside is a ring of UV-C light that attacks pathogens from all angles. The Aura Clean Base Station keeps the brush head protected, clean and away from environmental contaminants and also dries the brush head while charging – allowing the brush ready for use when you are.
If the toothpaste you use contains peroxide, baking soda or other type of bicarbonate (these are ingredients frequently found in “whitening” toothpaste), be sure to rinse you brush off thoroughly after use.
There are many options out there to disinfect your toothbrush ranging from special UV lamps to using bleach, dishwashing soap and your dishwasher!  Thankfully, keeping your toothbrush clean and infection-free does not need to be so complicated.  In fact, you most likely have the ingredients sitting in your cabinet right now.
Two-minute timer: The single most recommended feature, a two-minute timer takes the guesswork out of your brushing sessions to ensure your teeth get enough time under the bristles. Brushing under the American Dental Association’s recommended two minutes can result in a less effective clean. Dr. Lawlor told us, “patients say they brush for three to five minutes, but when they brush in front of me it will be less than a minute.” Most electric toothbrushes now offer this reality-check timer as a standard feature, regardless of price.
I think it’s ironic that “dental professionals” are on this website telling ppl what to do and what not to do. The other thing that’s ironic is that most of these “professionals” are telling ppl to go to dental schools or free or reduced clinics. What they aren’t saying is you can go to a free clinic all you want but there’s a catch. You may have to be the 25th caller that day out of the entire state, or you may have to be homeless living in a shelter or the most care you can get is cleaning or extraction but no one is removing your tartar buildup. Sorry to tell you also most dental schools only have a few events where they may see the public which means if you miss out guess what? Too bad. People act like we aren’t going to die anyway and last I checked dentistry was expensive. If this works for ppl let them do their own thing. I highly doubt cave men had dentist or any other people before the 21st century. I guess money is the real cause for concern here why spend $5 bucks at home when you should definitely break your neck to get to the dentist who will charge you $1,000’s. If this remedy works then use it if you don’t like a part of it take it out but don’t let anyone tell you what to do with teeth that are in your mouth!

The Goby’s subscription can be set up to send new brush heads every one to three months. (Dentists recommend that you replace your brush every three months, so the more frequent options are not very necessary for a single user.) Amazon does offer subscription deliveries for its products, too, but only for Prime members. The replacement brush heads for the Goby cost $6 with $3 shipping, about the same as the 2 Series replacements and a little more expensive than the Oral-B’s heads.

Sonicare’s newest group of brushes are the BrushSync heads. They’re unique because they contain a microchip whose presence can be detected by BrushSync capable toothbrush handles. (Right now that’s just the models that make up the DiamondClean Smart line.)

Priced under $100, the Sensonic comes with 3 brush heads and a travel case. Considering that it also has the QuadPacer and EasyStart modes, together with a 2-speed setting, this Waterpik electric toothbrush is a bargain.
The American Dental Association has a set of criteria to give products its Seal of Acceptance. Many products don’t seek this certification, but a product can’t receive the recognition unless the ADA has independently verified and approved its claims. In 2017, Oral-B became the first electric toothbrush brand to receive the ADA seal, with five series of the Oscillating-Rotating-Pulsating Power Toothbrush receiving the seal. However, the only factors that the ADA has found necessary to mouth health are brushing for two minutes with a reasonably soft brush and using proper technique.
Features: Easy start – gently increases power over 14 uses, USB charging Case and charging glass, Smart Timer with Quadpacer – Alerts you every 30 seconds to change quadrants and again when you have reached 2 minutes
“Average folks brush 46 seconds. With timers people will go to at least the two minutes,” said Dr. Joan Gluch, an adjunct associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. “Clinically, we see patients do better with powered toothbrushes.” Dr. Mark Wolff, a professor at NYU Dental School and chair of the Cariology and Comprehensive Care department, agreed: “It helps people that don’t brush well,” he said. “If you need the guidance, invest in the guidance.”
Protect your teeth with Oral-B’s Sugar Defense Toothbrush with 2.5x deeper reach to remove more plaque than a regular manual toothbrush. The Sugar Defense toothbrush cleans hard to reach areas, in-between teeth, along the gumline, and on the tongue and cheek. It gives users a comfortable whole mouth clean experience and is easy and effortless to use. It provides the basic anti-cavity benefits you need in a toothbrush.

A few years ago this was one of Sonicare’s newest options. At this point in time it only comes on one of the FlexCare Platinum Connected models (HX9192/02). And while this is one of Sonicare’s higher-end toothbrushes, this feature hasn’t been carried over into the newer DiamondClean and DiamondClean Smart product lines.
Oral-B Glide Floss Picks are easy to use and provide a more complete clean. They combine the silky-smooth texture of Glide floss with the ease of a pick. Glide Floss Picks slide more easily in tight spaces and effectively help remove plaque and food particles between teeth and just below the gum line vs. brushing alone.
For this best-value type of choice, we used to lean toward the Sonicare 3 Series. Now it seems (especially in light of some of the comments posted below and on retailer websites) that buying the HealthyWhite+ makes the better choice (both in performance and reliability).

You may not be aware of this but the whole reason to buy a Sonicare is because of its full-power 31,000 brushstrokes-per-minute brushing action. (In some promotional materials this may be stated as the equivalent 62,000 brush movements/minute.)
As a head is used, the bristles become worn, they can fray and become softer and less effective.  When new bristles are normally quite tightly formed in a group together but over weeks of use will gradually start to part.  It is at this stage that the brush heads lose their effectiveness and could be doing more damage to the tooth surfaces and your gums.
Hello I am in my first semester of dental hygiene school. I am 31 years old with a prior college degree. It is not like the normal college experience at all. Very stressful program and very intensive. The skill is very hard to learn and you either have it or you don’t. It can be frustrating at times. It is not easy, you will earn your money in this profession. And hard to leaen and practive on live patients. The money attracted me, at first I didn’t know what I’ve gotten myself into when I saw how difficult this program is, but it is kind of growing on me. .. Still not sure if I will make it through.
The Goby Electric Toothbrush is only a few dollars more than our other picks and comes with the same no-frills features: a two-minute timer that shuts the brush off at the end, plus a quadrant timer to prompt you to switch areas every 30 seconds. Goby offers an “optional” brush head subscription service—however, keep in mind that you can’t get new brush heads anywhere else and there is only one kind available. Unlike the Sonicare, there is no travel case to stash your brush head.
The flexibility of the string allows to wrap it up around the tooth and scrape off stubborn plaque residue. Traditional floss is also very cost effective when compared to electric toothbrushes and their inevitable need for replacement parts.
We really think that Sonicare did a reasonable job with their app. But from the standpoint of the average person who just needs a good, effective electric toothbrush, it contributes too little at too much cost.
As you may expect, much of a dental hygienist’s job requires working with people’s mouths, and it’s possible that you will come into contact with the occasional patient who has bad breath, swollen gums or tooth decay.
That is exactly what is bad about ALL these brushes but doesn’t get a mention in the review – the built-in obsolescence via the needlessly built-in battery. I guess you have to have some environmental heart to care about that. I guess you also have to live in a typical ex-colony where the cost means something. What Europeans and Americans throw away appals me.
Another option that not all sellers and manufacturers like to give is a “money back guarantee”. In case they do offer it, make sure it is at least 1 month after purchase. Also, make sure the shipping and delivery dates are reasonable. You do not want to receive your toothbrush on the 30th day and not have time to claim your money back, in case it does not work or it is not up to your standards.
The Philips Sonicare 2 Series is one of the least expensive brushes in Sonicare’s line, but still has a two-minute timer, rechargeable battery, and makes less noise than our Oral-B pick. This pick has a smaller range of brush textures and shapes, but they are all soft and serviceable.

We’ve gone through two sets of double Phillips Sonicare Flexcare brushes and love them, except they ALWAYS die, typically within 9 months. Phillips will back them once and send a replacement, but once you’ve passed a year your out of luck. We’ve had all four brushed die within a year, as well as their replacements (undoubtedly refurbs) die all within 6 months. It’s simply not worth the hassle. Now, sadly, I’ll be taking the leap over to Oral B to see if they can provide something that will actually last.
If a subscription service will help you replace your brush heads regularly, Goby has all the features we look for in a brush: a 30-second quadrant timer that stops after two minutes and a rechargeable battery. The Goby has only one type of brush head available (rotating), so if you like to customize your brush this service may not be for you.

You say an inductive charger, something the overpriced model has, is something buyers don’t need. You may have been mislead by the packaging on that particular model. Your top two picks, and probably all rechargable brushes, use inductive chargers.

Like we discussed above, plaque (especially mature plaque) definitely can provide a fortress for the ‘bad bugs’ to increase their populations (bad news).  A recent article titled, Understanding the root cause of tooth decay and gum disease, explains how the microbes in an environment are the heavy hitters that ‘control the playing field’.  When plaque matures, the types of microbes shift from a healthy balance of microbes to an environment dominated and controlled by ‘bad bugs’.
There’s nothing complex about the Oral-B Pro Power Rechargeable 1000. It’s an oscillating model that comes with just one brush head. You could interchange it with the more complex heads from other Oral-B models (and the Pro 1000 has the same multi-angled “3D” action), but there’s only one mode, so we doubt you’d get the same degree of effectiveness. That said, a lot of people like this toothbrush for its simplicity. It’s light (4.25 ounces) with a slender, rubberized handle. In the lab, we felt it was just a small step up from the thin handle of a manual toothbrush, however.
Is there a relationship between “sensitive” mode on some brushes and low or medium “intensity” on Series 3. Fewer strokes/min? Also, please confirm that only “clean” mode, i.e. full bore 31,000 strokes /min, accomplishes the “fluid dynamic” cleaning – or does sensitive &/or med/low intensity just have less?? My concern centers around abrasive notching of the root surface. Does any particular brush head facilitate fluid dynamic cleaning? Intercare? Thanks
Proper brushing, especially with a tartar control toothpaste, and flossing are necessary to reduce plaque and tartar buildup. Once tartar has formed, only your dentist or dental hygienist can remove it professionally.
There is no proof that you even need to completely sanitize your toothbrush. So you may skip this step if you want to. If you are a little paranoid and just want to ensure that your toothbrush stays clean then sanitize it in solution about once a week.
Thank you Lori, for your educated advice. I am a dentist and agree that this home remedy is dangerous to not only your gums but your systemic health as well. It is unfortunate not all of us has dental coverage, I didn’t until recently as well. Stick to the basics people! Brushing and flossing goes a long way to help keep your teeth and gums healthy! As far as home remedies are concerned. I truly believe they can be helpful; my mother used them with me and I have worked closely with a homeopath. It is important to know when a home remedy is useful and when you need to seek professional help! Physicians and dentists go to school for many years to learn their specialty. Importantly, if you have let the calculus build up as much as it has in the picture you are in serious need of professional health — see your dentist and hygienist.
I personally preferred the Sonicare. Perhaps my Oral-B was told tech (likely), but I much preferred the vibrations to the rotating head. Also the batter life was abysmal… currently I go about 2 months on a charge on the Sonicare.

It is your job to keep up with check-ups and appointments. It is not the responsibility of your dentist to make you attend. Once you have missed several consecutive dates, you run the risk of being taken off the patient list at the surgery. So, avoid falling into a dental limbo by maintaining a good dental healthcare routine.

Many Sonicare brushes feature Quadpacer or BrushPacer. These functions signal when you should advance to cleaning the next portion of your mouth. Not everyone values this type of indicator. We state below which models allow you to deactivate it.
Studies have found that electronic, or powered, toothbrushes may get rid of plaque better than manual models. No matter which type you use, be sure it has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. These have undergone rigorous quality control and safety tests.
In order to begin a dental hygiene associate’s degree program, students are usually required to complete a certain number of prerequisite courses with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The topics can range from science to communications:
Overall though, this is a great little addition to our overall dental care hygiene. I purchased this during a Black Friday sale for a great price. Should that price re-emerge, I’ll purchase a second one.
The Oral-B Pro 3000 3D White Smart Series is another smart brush. The least expensive of all Bluetooth models we’ve considered, this brush is part of the Oral-B line of electric toothbrushes that have earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance. It is similar to our top pick in form and function, except it has three cleaning modes (two more than necessary), and connects to an app via Bluetooth. It’s also twice the price. Though this model does not offer position detection, it stores brushing time and pressure data from the 30 most recent brushing sessions, which you can sync to the app later, should you prefer not to bring your phone or tablet into the bathroom every time you clean your mouth. If you find reviewing your basic brushing performance motivational, and would rather not need an app or pen and paper handy each time you brush, consider the Pro 3000 Smart Series.
Fortunately, due to the aforementioned large range of brush heads, you can buy another type that feels better if you do not like the Pro 1000. Toothbrushes are meant to be replaced every three months anyway, so buying new brush heads is an inevitability; you just have to eat the cost of the two Pro heads that come with the brush.
Drinking dark colored beverages such as wine or beer may stain the teeth leading to a discolored smile. Drinking high-concentration alcohol can lead to a dry mouth, with little saliva to protect the teeth from plaque and bacteria.[44]
What we’re saying here is that we do think the list above does accurately reflect the comparative effectiveness of each type of replacement brush head. But as to the actual values (multiples of 10X, 7X, etc… over manual brushing), we’re very hesitant to place much faith in what they seem to state.
“Average folks brush 46 seconds. Brush for two minutes, and don’t use too much pressure. Brush lightly and for the recommended two minutes. Brushing for less time won’t remove plaque and brushing too hard or too much could damage your teeth or gums.

Store your toothbrush upright. This allows water to drain from the bristles. It also keeps them away from bacteria that grows in even trace amounts of water. If you store your toothbrush in a container like a cup, you may have noticed that scum collects at the bottom. If you store your toothbrush on its side or with the brush facing down, it will be lying in that scum.[3]
Dental hygienists in Canada must have completed a diploma program, this can be 19 months to 3 years. All dental hygiene students must pass a NDHCB (NDHCB) examination after graduation. This examination is offered three times per year, January, May and September. Three universities in Canada offer Bachelor of Science degrees in Dental Hygiene: Dalhousie University, University of Alberta, University of British Columbia.[3][4][5]
With a design and bristle structure that looks to effectively remove plaque, improve gum health and get to those hard to reach areas, the ProResults head for Sonicare brushes is available in both a standard and compact size, to suit your needs.
To make things easier we have included below the links and product codes (shown in bold) to every type of Sonicare brush head available on Amazon at the time of writing. Overall, the three retailers we recommend checking out are:
We couldn’t give Greater Goods our top spot because it doesn’t really do a better job than the Sonicare 2 Series. But those who choose the Greater Goods Balance can expect a comfortable sonic toothbrush while giving back to those in need. For us, that’s worth a mention.
Get a high quality butter oil / fermented cod oil mix which is extremely good for teeth (and general health) I highly suggest that Blue Ice brand (google it I can’t remember the exact name). They got 5 or 6 different products I’d highly recommend for teeth. Also get a vitamin K-2 supplement which gives you the MK-7 form. You want to make sure of 2 things with the K2 supplement: A. it uses olive oil (preferablly organic) as it’s carrier (this leaves out the Jarrows brand), B. it’s made from a fermented Japanese food called Natto using non-GMO soybeans. There are a few good brands for this, NutriGold is one and there was another I may have liked even a touch better than NutriGold but I can’t remember the name of of the brand now (I think it was more of a white bottle/label). But don’t forget about the Blue Ice products, seriously, they are amazing. Read about all the great successes people have had with the organic butter oil / fermented cod liver oil with regards to teeth/cavities, it’ll probably make all these so-called “professionals” crap their pants, their brains wouldn’t be able to handle it since it wasn’t indoctrinated into their heads by some brainwashing (in some ways, not all) textbook.
So I’ve been using the Smileactives Vibrite Sonic Toothbrush and really like it. But you didn’t even look at it? Or did you? I’m curious as to what you think if it. It has all the mandatory features you list and I really like the UV sanitizing storage case that is supposed to keep the brush head clean. Plus it’s designed for whitening. Your thoughts on this one? https://smileactives.com/vibrite-sonic-teeth-whitening-toothbrush/
Brushing modes: a) Full-power mode is stated to be 25% faster than a Sonicare, which should place it in the 38,750 brush strokes per minute range. We don’t see this as a giant advantage over a Sonicare (31,000 brush strokes/min.)   b) This brush also has a reduced-power “sensitive” mode.
It’s got many positive reviews and a high rating of 4.4. Users have commented on its many benefits. Among them, many users have seen positive changes in the color of their teeth. In just one week you can see visible changes.
Like an associate’s degree, you’ll have to complete prerequisite coursework for a bachelor’s program. While many of your classes—dental anatomy, radiology, dental materials—will be the same whether you earn an associate’s or bachelor’s, the latter will allow you to dig deeper into the profession.
They found that both the active forms of vitamin D3 and omega 3 DHA improved the ability of the macrophages from the Alzheimer’s patients’ blood samples to absorb amyloid beta. They also noticed there was less of the cell-death that is normally triggered by amyloid beta.
The war on battery life is important because there are still some big gaps between leading manufacturers. There are certain toothbrushes that take 24 hours to charge fully, while others take 12 hours. Once fully charged some devices can last up to six weeks when used twice a day. In comparison, there are still devices that will not last half of that time.

As I mentioned earlier, electric toothbrushes do not run on dark magic and Jedi crystals, they run on electricity. The very first vibrating brushes were unavoidably designed to be used only when directly plugged into the outlet. This is not only dangerous but also inconvenient. For this reason, batteries have now become the preferred method of charging these devices.
That gives you a lot of options to choose from when buying replacement heads (that alone is an important feature). And for this reason, we don’t place great emphasis on which type comes with which model.
However, and once again like with the 2 Series, comments we’ve read on large retailer websites seem to suggest that first-time buyers tend to be relatively satisfied with this brush (as compared to using their manual one).
Hi all, I am sure that it is a money thing when it comes to the cost of the lower end brushes to the upper-end ones. I am sure that there is a difference but not that much. Also, when looking at when to replace a brush, I believe it went from 6 months to 3 months, umm, because they make more money. I find it hard to believe it is because the brushes wear out that fast.
The difference in reality, to a great degree at least, comes down to complexities of testing and probably also a fear from manufacturers of not being sued. How do you prove 100% eradication of all types of bacteria? That means you have to have tests that reliably cover all possible forms! Which is totally impractical. So in real life a 99% reduction is of course perfectly fine and is exactly what we’re looking for. It’s possible these products could be ‘sterilizing’ your toothbrush – you just won’t find manufacturers claiming it is.
We will point out that Sonicare has used the word “reminder” when naming these bristles, meaning they’re not necessarily a precise indicator. Online user comments we read typically stated that the color change signaled replacement before a full 3 months had lapsed.
Plaque is a sticky bacteria that sticks to your teeth. When plaque is not removed through brushing and flossing, it turns into tartar. Try one of our toothpastes which reduces plaque and tartar build up.
If you just want to dive in and grab the best product for the job, then you really can’t go wrong with the ones below. Or if you want to understand a bit more about how they work, jump to the explanation below.

It’s not that I am not pleased with the review; I think the inclusion of this information could make them much better. Hopefully, you would include it on the checklist that you use when you initially qualify products for review.
The Sonicare does not “oscillate,” it merely vibrates. “Sonic Pulverization” feels great, but we were unable to find any scientific evidence that backs its efficacy. Every clinical study says that the Oral B is better when it comes to cleaning your mouth.
With the toothbrush still off, place it in your mouth. The bristles should be placed against the teeth and should have a slight angle towards the gum line. Close your mouth before turning the brush on. Otherwise, your bathroom will be showered with toothpaste.
“I think that one of the things that people look for with Bluetooth connection—or anything that connects to their phone—is confirmation that what they’re doing is enough, or good, or better than what they were doing before,” Dr. Maria Lopez-Howell, a dentist and ADA spokesperson told us. “And I think that, if this gives the patient information that they’re brushing enough time, [and] if this is encouraging a patient to brush—this is something that the American Dental Association is wanting.”
TIP : I combined Baking Soda + Lemon + Salt + Tooth paste + Coconut oil together. Result : Now no plaque or tartar !! Even the blurred crown (ie, a metal cap over 1 front tooth) shining !! Yea, now I give instant hearty smile !!!
