Electric toothbrushes wear away the protective layer of her tooth enamel, and expose the sensitive root, with inevitable, painful consequences. Dentists say that people are brushing too hard and fast with them and it’s causing damage. They advise returning to old-fashioned, manual brushing (stock image)
What an awesome value these replacement heads are! They fit my Oral B toothbrush perfectly. My gums are a bit sensitive and the Oral B brand replacement heads are usually too firm for me and make my gums bleed. These ToothQuake replacement heads were nice and soft, yet firm enough to make my mouth feel clean. And, my gums didn’t bleed at all. I’m so happy with these! I highly reccomend!
To become an endodontist means undergoing an additional two years of training beyond dental school. As a result, these specialized dentists perform more specific procedures beyond general teeth cleaning and repair work. While a dentist may perform a handful of root canal treatments in a week, an endodontist may end up working on 20 or more in the same timespan. Your average endodontist also repairs teeth damaged by trauma and performs endodontic retreatments, which is repeat root canal procedure. Their added training also means that the endodontist is much more adept at utilizing complex dental equipment – especially ultrasonic instruments or microscopes. Most of that equipment is used to improve the health of teeth that are affected by disease and even congenital deformities.

This has inspired growing interest in understanding the role of psychosocial factors in the development of diminished oral health status [4], including chronic stress (e.g., [5–8]). A: All of the following Oral-B replacement electric toothbrush heads are compatible with the Oral-B Genius 8000 electric toothbrush: CrossAction, Deep Sweep, Floss Action, 3D White, Precision Clean, Sensitive, Dual Clean, Power Tip, and Ortho. [2] The Fortune 500 is an annual list compiled and published by Fortune magazine that ranks the top 500 U.S. closely held and public corporations as ranked by their gross revenue after adjustments made by Fortune to exclude the impact of excise taxes companies incur. The list includes publicly and privately held companies for which revenues are publicly available. The first Fortune 500 list was published in 1955. Maintaining an online database of projects funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration/Maternal and Child Health Bureau (HRSA/MCHB) (e.g., infrastructure-capacity projects, research projects, pediatric dentistry training projects) A picture-perfect smile falls just out of reach for many children living in poverty. Dental caries is the most common chronic childhood disease, and the burden of dental caries falls disproportionately on low-income and minority children (Dye et al. 2012). Children living in poverty have about five times more untreated dental decay than children from higher income families (GAO Report 2000). The socioeconomic forces that place these children at risk of food insecurity are the very same ones that increase their risk of developing early childhood caries. This disparity in poor oral health adversely impacts these children’s ability to eat, speak, and learn, further cementing social inequities already stacked against this vulnerable population. Unlike with medical insurance where its primary purpose is protection against catastrophic financial loss, the primary goal of having dental coverage is the prevention of problems and diagnosing those that do occur as early as possible. In many states, school-based health centers (SBHCs) serve as an alternative setting to address the unmet primary and oral health care needs of children. SBHCs seek to encourage service coordination and improve access to care for high-risk children. Some states’ departments of health work with school-based health centers to provide these services and other states allow local government and other stakeholders to provide school-based services. In Colorado, SBHCs work with medical centers and university systems to provide dental services for underserved rural and urban populations.     Elevate your custom cleaning experience with the multifunctional 360º SmartRing. Visible from every angle while brushing, the SmartRing allows you to see feedback from the pressure sensor, brushing timer and Bluetooth connection with ease. It can also be programmed through the Oral-B smartphone app to illuminate with your choice of 12 colors as you brush. Since dental decay can start as soon as teeth erupt, to be effective, preventive oral health strategies need to target children early when transmission of oral bacteria from mother to infant commences and eating habits are established. Since infants and children are seen by their primary care providers (medical) frequently during the first two years of life, there is an opportunity for these practitioners to promote oral health and refer children for dental care. However, primary care providers receive limited training in prevention of oral diseases, while general dentists care for young children, but their small numbers nationwide made such services unavailable to most children. High-risk children usually have dental insurance through medicaid, but the percentage of dentists participating in Medicaid is low. Only one in five children covered by Medicaid actually receives preventive dental care. As this is a sonic toothbrush, it can effectively drive water towards the teeth and up into the gum line, ensuring that your gums and teeth become cleaner and healthier. Even with the added power that this toothbrush offers, the sonic technology ensures that you will be able to enjoy a delicate brushing experience. Most dental insurance covers two teeth cleanings per year. If you haven’t had your teeth cleaned in the past 6 months, schedule an appointment with us at any of our conveniently located offices in North Carolina. Our testers were consistently happy with the brushing experience provided by the Sonicare FlexCare Platinum. Like other Sonicare rechargeable toothbrushes, it gradually increases the brushing intensity so you can get used to it, which is helpful if you’re used to manual brushes. The first brushing feels almost like a tickling for your mouth, and over the course of two weeks, you gradually acclimate to the full power. Even though the FlexCare Platinum was gentle on our mouths, it left our teeth feeling polished and our mouths feeling clean. I really really love this toothbrush, I bought one each for myself and my husband. I've had it for over a month, and this morning I saw the upper part BURNED!!! I wasn't charging it, it was just on the table. I'm so afraid now what if it caused a fire while we were asleep. I'm grateful for Amazon for having me return it with full refund despite it's been out of the returning window. But for Sonicare, please investigate this. This is not safe!!! These electric toothbrushes by Sonicare are the top picks based on their features, quality, design, and reviews by real users. You can compare their features, prices, think of the modes, and think of which features are more important for you. The Quip is a no-frills toothbrush with a single brush head style and a simple timer that indicates each 30-second interval, shutting off at the two-minute mark. This is the only brush we tested that uses replaceable batteries instead of a built-in rechargeable battery. Quip has an unusual business model—the only way to get a new brush head is through the company’s website, which encourages a subscription that sends a replacement every three months. Though you can purchase individual brush heads separately for $5 with free shipping, if you need a spare head you can’t just run to the store to get a new one. (And you’d better keep spare or rechargeable AAAs around.) The overall pricing structure is a bit confusing, and the store page defaults to the more expensive metal brushes, but toggling the interface gives you access to the slightly less expensive plastic brushes. Although the stylish design (of the more expensive metal model) and the quiet operation are both impressive, we found the vibrations to be weak. The Quip could be a nice option for someone who travels a lot and prefers the freedom of no charger, but it doesn’t have the brush head options or wide availability of our main pick. Apps: Bluetooth connectivity and compatible phone apps that track your brushing habits are becoming increasingly popular with high-end models. It’s a neat feature, but a basic two-minute timer also encourages better technique and speaking with your dentist is really the best way to get updates on your dental health. The one exception is with kids’ brushes — apps can be helpful for encouraging children to brush. In fact, some brushing apps were so fun that children wouldn’t stop playing (manufacturers had to update their apps to make the game unplayable between brushes). Prevent Gingivitis. Sonic toothbrushes effectively fight gingivitis. In clinical studies, these brushes have shown a big reduction of it after the patient was using it for 4 weeks. The results were also twice the amount than with a manual toothbrush. colgate oral care

I know several MD’s in my West Loop neighborhood and can assure you Dr. King has the respect of ALL of them. The only downside of this neighborhood is parking can be a tad spotty but, rest assured, Dr. King and his team of seasoned pro’s (dentists, hygienists AND administrative) are worth spending a few extra minutes to park. Trust me.

Get more of a good thing – each Oral-B Sensitive Clean refill pack includes 3 toothbrush heads. In fact, each toothbrush head’s design is inspired by the round shape of professional dental cleaning tools and is perfectly sized for the mouth of your tween. The shape allows the bristles to surround each tooth for individual cleaning, resulting in an amazing, tooth-by-tooth clean.
In this analysis we consider the general salience of our framework by investigating whether or not the perception of current stress is associated with self-reported poor oral health status among residents of Toronto, Ontario’s most populous city. We also examine whether this relationship is moderated by dental insurance and dental care utilization, since having greater access to oral health care (e.g., because of dental insurance or as reflected by actual visits to the dentist) may help to buffer the impact of chronic stress on poor oral health and other social and health outcomes.
It’s nice that this (as well as some other Oral-b models) come with a variety of brush heads. It provides you with an easy way to have a chance to experiment with them and select the kind that works best for you.
Tooth decay is largely preventable yet it remains a serious problem. Findings from Public Health England’s (PHE) 2015 national dental epidemiology survey of 5 year old children showed that in 2015 in England, a quarter (25%) of 5 year olds had experienced tooth decay, having on average 3 or 4 teeth affected. The vast majority of tooth decay was untreated.
I know it’s not exactly dinner time conversation but it doesn’t hurt to ask. There’s a strong genetic predilection for gum disease and this information can help your dentist with your teeth cleanings and overall care.
Thanks for a brilliant site. I decided for the 56€ Oral-B PRO CrossAction 2000 thanks to the information provided here. After using it for a couple of weeks I wanted to write and clarify one thing. It is mentioned on this site that one way of knowing if any model has the recommended 40k pulses/minute is that it would offer 2 speedes. If the 2000 model in fact has 40k pulses/minute it is the exception to this rule, it only has 1 speed “Daily Clean” and a second pulsing on/off speed (Gum Care) which I don’t believe counts as a speed by it self. I have not been able to find any written documentation whether it pulses with 20k or 40k and since I only have this model I cannot compare with anything else.
The moderating effect of socioeconomic position was stronger than that observed for dental insurance. This relative difference could be explained if individuals of lower socioeconomic position experience a multitude of barriers to health. For example, this population may experience: 1) poorer access to adequate dental care given unemployment or employment in a position with miserly health benefits [32, 33]; 2) greater chronic stress and coping in ways that are more damaging to their oral health (e.g., tobacco use, alcohol use, consumption of junk food); and 3) greater risk of other chronic diseases, which may impact oral disease via the oral-systemic relationship.

Our oral care lozenges are “smart mints” designed to be a convenient, effective oral care supplement for maintaining dental hygiene on the go or when brushing and flossing just aren’t enough. Invented by a Stanford-trained scientist, they contain a naturally safe formula of prebiotic ingredients that help balance your oral ecology to promote:
Replace brush head reminder not customizable: The app reminds you to change your brush head every ninety days. I see the damage of waiting too long to replace brush heads all the time in my private practice. Ninety days is too long.
It also comes with a regular, non-rechargeable battery. This makes sense for a travel toothbrush as you don’t want to be charging on the go. But it also makes it harder to tell if the power is still at its peak, which the experts say is crucial for an effective brush.
I thought I had used an electric tooth brush before, but believe me they were NOTHING like the Oral B. I was shocked when I first turned it on and it took off like a power saw. You cannot brush too hard, it will pause itself until you ease up, so there is no chance of damage to your teeth. It is so much better than the cheap ones, it is in a class by itself, and worth every penny. I will never use any other. I did buy a variety of brush heads for it and trade about frequently. Different ones do different types of cleaning, and all are labeled to help you choose which you want to use that day.
Oral-B Pro 1000 Electric Rechargeable Toothbrush would be our recommendation if you don’t have a huge budget. You get the basic features like pressure sensor and Pro timer from Oral-B. Of course, it’s suitable for your day-to-day brushing needs.
Oral-B Electric Toothbrush Tips It’s important to take care of your electric toothbrush to make sure you get your best clean with every brush. Here are some tips on how to clean and take care of your electric toothbrush to keep your smile at its healthiest. How to Clean Your Electric ToothbrushBecause one of the main purposes of a toothbrush is to remove bacteria from your mouth, it’s important to keep your toothbrush sanitary and free of bacteria.Keep these tips in mind to keep your electric toothbrush clean and safe:
The toothpaste helps in washing away bacteria and food, but also provides additional ingredients such as fluoride and antimicrobial agents to strengthen teeth and enhance their protection. Our toothbrush must be changed regularly, so that it is always in good condition. We must also know how to use our toothbrush properly. How and for how long we brush our teeth are critical factors for the effectiveness of teeth cleaning.

Expensive Philips Sonicare Tooth Brush |

The battery will last around 2 weeks if used twice a day with the Clean mode. We only tested the other modes briefly to see what the difference in power was. Considering that Clean was the hardest mode of the 3, we can assume battery will last the same or longer if used with the other 2 modes. Having said that, it takes 24 to fully charge the battery. That is on average 8 hours longer than other more advanced Sonic toothbrushes.
Sonicare tooth brushes are so powerful that they can move up to 6 times more plaque than you would be able to remove using a standard manual toothbrush. This insures that your teeth be as clean as possible. With the sonicare dynamic cleaning function, the toothbrush will force water in between your teeth and into your gum line and this will ensure that all bacteria and daybreak are removed from even most difficult to reach places.
It’s been a couple years since the first app-connected, or “smart,” electric toothbrushes became available, but they still don’t offer enough capabilities for their added cost for us to recommend them for most people. (They’re at least double the price of a standard electric toothbrush.) “Smart” brush capabilities vary widely, but mainly these devices automate the process of tracking your brushing habits, typically by connecting to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth. The most expensive “smart” models, like the Oral-B Genius and Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Connected can track where the brush is in your mouth.
Obviously, we don’t speak for Philips. So if having this option is important to you, you should contact them or read the packaging of the product you’re considering before making your purchase, just to make sure you have all of the details straight.
The researchers say more work is needed to find out if these two different transcription patterns of inflammatory genes are signs of either two stages of Alzheimer’s, or even two types of the disease.
The American Dental Association’s (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) serves as the sole accrediting body for dental hygiene programs in the United States. There are currently 330 CODA-accredited dental hygiene programs throughout the country.

Like many others, I just want to thank you for all your time in putting this together. Wish I’d found this before I spent the HOURS I did trying to research all these models on the web and in the stores. Needless to say I was pleased to see that the Healthy White+ which I ended up buying was your “best buy”. Like another reviewer said, you should review everything in the world.
If you have braces — pay attention to the heads selection. I grabbed a pack of round “floss action” ones, but turned out instruction explicitly recommends against using them with braces. Specialized heads for braces seem to not be available around here, so I guess I’ll stick with “default” ones for now.
2008 – Independent practice dental hygienist: A dental hygienist licensed with an independent practice may work without the supervision of a dentist, providing that the dental hygienist has to complete 2,000 work hours of clinical practice during the two years prior to applying for an independent license, as well as a bachelor’s degree from a CODA accredited dental hygiene program or complete 6,000 work hours of clinical practice during the six years prior to applying for an independent license, as well as an associate degree from a CODA accredited dental hygiene program. Can be Used on Braces and Other Dental Restorations. Using a manual toothbrush on teeth with dental restorations leaves them at risk. However, sonic electric toothbrushes have been tested and have shown that they are safe for using them on braces, crowns, implants, fillings and other.
We’ve been using quip for a months now and after replacing the brush head, one of the two brushes has stopped working and the other developed a crack. So far, we’re not impressed and probably going to switch to the Oral B
There is a really easy and clever way to check if you have a plaque build-up on your teeth. Take some food colouring – just the regular stuff found in supermarkets – and add it to a teaspoon of water. You can use this mini mixture as a plaque highlighting solution. However, you are advised to rub a little petroleum jelly on your lips first to avoid stains. You only need to gargle with the food colouring and then spit it out. You should be left with light patches of colour where the most stubborn plaque accumulations are; concentrate brushing here.
Early models consisted of disposable batteries because the technology was not advanced enough. Nowadays, rechargeable batteries are the standard. However, manufacturers are now competing to design longer lasting batteries.
Your small paintbrush analogy befuddles common sense. Your mouth is not large, it is quite small and your teeth occupy only a small portion of the already small mouth. Small canvases call for small brushes to get the details.
Today’s busy lifestyles typically cause large amounts of stress that can raise hormones to an unhealthy level in the body. Factors like smoking, drinking too much and overeating also contribute to poor arterial health. All of these things together can cause weight gain and blockages in the arteries.
In our quest to finding the top sonic toothbrush models, we came across Sterline – an up and coming dental hygiene brand. It is not easy to spot, because it does not have the same market shares as Philips or Oral-B, but it is definitely out there.
Dentists recommend brushing at least twice a day, so it’s important that you have the right toothbrush to help you get the job done right. Your toothbrush should be replaced every three months, so you have plenty of time to experiment, but we’ve found some of the best ones to get you started.
String cords, on the other hand, are hard to get around your finger and they often rip while flossing. Not to mention, sometimes it is quite difficult to reach the rear teeth of your mouth. However, if you have tight space between your teeth, no toothbrush will do the job as efficiently as a flossing cord.
We found this particular model to be a bit chubby. Perhaps due to its older type of NiMH battery that takes a larger portion of the unit’s body. Unlike newer and sleeker models, this Sonicare feels chunky when you hold it.
In recent years, scientists have studied whether toothbrushes may harbor microorganisms that could cause oral and/or systemic infection.1-4 We know that the oral cavity is home to hundreds of different types of microorganisms;5 therefore, it is not surprising that some of these microorganisms are transferred to a toothbrush during use. It may also be possible for microorganisms that are present in the environment where the toothbrush is stored to establish themselves on the brush. Toothbrushes may even have bacteria on them right out of the box4 since they are not required to be sold in a sterile package.

The oscillating-rotating toothbrush is mostly developed by Oral-B. They have tested and perfected the design and technology over time. Currently, the idea of this type of toothbrush is to move slowly from tooth to tooth in order for more effective cleaning.

While the toothbrush performed very well in terms of brushing, we did not see much improvement in regards to whitening. According to Philips, 2 weeks of brushing twice a day should have resulted in teeth being whitened by 2 shades. Unfortunately, our test cannot confirm these claims.
With any manual toothbrush, there’re places in between the teeth that are difficult to reach. That can leave plaque and lead to cavities. However, DiamondClean provides double cleaning power to that of a manual toothbrush. This results in more plaque removal in the hardest to reach areas.
Dental hygienists use a variety of tools and devices to perform daily tasks. A range of instruments are used to help remove plaque and stains, including air-polishing tools and ultrasonic devices. As technology continues to advance, lasers are showing up next to the patient chair more frequently, and dental hygienists must be trained in proper usage of these tools. They must also be well-versed in radiography when using certain types of x-ray equipment. Although state-by-state requirements vary, many dental hygienists counsel patients on how different foods affect oral health and provide advice on proper techniques for care.
Proper tooth brushing is critically important to good dental hygiene. Parents can help their children practice proper tooth brushing by starting to clean teeth early, using the right amount of fluoride toothpaste, supervising tooth brushing, and talking to a pediatrician or dentist about a child’s specific fluoride needs. More information on caring for children’s teeth may be found at CDC’s Brush Up on Healthy Teeth pages.
I just got the Oral B Pro 1000 recommended here last week ($22 on Amazon after a $10 off coupon!), and I wanted to let you know it does actually have the 30 second indicator in addition to the 2 minute indicator. Perhaps this is a feature they’ve added since this review was written. My toothbrush does a short stutter every 30 seconds and a longer stutter at the 2 minute mark.
Without proper treatment, tartar and plaque can lead to a variety of issues like cavities, gum disease and tooth loss. It’s important to brush twice a day and floss once a day, and schedule regular checkups and professional cleanings with your dentist.

Dental hуgіеnіsts perform a number of duties within a dental office. They are responsible for cleaning teeth, looking for signs of oral disease in patients, and providing education and preventative care. Specific tasks performed by dental hygienists include сlеаning stаіns and plaque buildup on teeth, сlеаning undеr аnd аrоund the gums, sеаrсhing fоr іndісаtоrs оf оrаl disease such as swеllіng, and applying dental prophylaxis, sealants, and topical fluorides as required. They also educate patients on oral care and hygiene such as on flossing, brushing and diet. Additionally, dental hygienists help dentists and other professionals in their office in tasks such as taking radiographs, assisting during dental procedures and making impressions of teeth. Some dental hygienists work for orthodontists and provide care specific to orthodontic patients and procedures.
If you are looking to become the ultimate destroyer of plaque and harmful mouth bacteria, you have come to the right place. Sonic toothbrushes are powerful, easy to use, quite interactive, and most of all beneficial to everyday oral hygiene. So, if you think the time to up your dental game has come, this comparison between different sonic models is for you.
Self help is the best. I personally follow a dental routine of brushing and mouth wash, but twice a week use baking soda and have recently added hydrogen peroxide which I intend to use once a week. My dentist says he loves the state of my teeth and gum..my nephew who is a dentist is totally against polishing teeth and believes it will damage the teeth in the long run. of course those in the field throw their hands up in the sky but the proof of the pudding is in the pie! if those who have used Baking soda for years have perfectly healthy teeth, who are they to suggest it is harmful!
Check your toothbrush for signs of wear and tear, and replace it more frequently than every three to four months if needed. Children’s toothbrushes often need to be replaced more frequently than adult brushes.

Ok, the really weird thing is this did not arrive when expected. This was in no part the fault of the seller but UPS. It was part of the Christmas on time delivery blunder. The weird part is on the UPS tracking page and on Amazon itself, it’s showing as arrived on time when in fact it was 2 days late! I have a couple of Amazons email with the notification of it’s delay. It seems that both UPS and Amazon ALTERED the tracking records! I’ve never seen this happen before and makes me question what is really going on over at Amazon for them or UPS to alter the records.
For Component 1, reviewed applications will be funded in order by score and rank determined by the review panel, unless doing so limits geographic spread and representation and inclusion of oral health promotion and disease prevention programs with a higher proportion of families whose income is below the federal poverty level. In this case, the priority will go to achieving the desired representation.
Sonicare is one of the best selling Philips toothbrushes around. It provides sonic technology, which is perfect for sweeping away the plaque and the bacteria from your teeth as well as breaking down bacteria and debris that may have managed to sink below the gum line. As different users have different requirements and needs, there are a few different brush heads that you can choose from for these electric toothbrushes. Read on to find out more about the kinds of sonicare toothbrushes that you can choose from.

The Sonicare 2 Series vibrates at 31,000 strokes a minute which is the same rate as Philips’ more expensive models. If that seems like an extreme amount of brushstrokes, it is. It breaks down to 515 strokes per second. All that motion in your mouth polishes your teeth and propels your toothpaste around at high speed so that it can reach spaces between teeth that brushes can’t. It’s a sensation that most people are unfamiliar with and some may even find it unpleasant at first. This Sonicare brush comes with an easy start feature where its first use is a gentle buzz and over the next 14 brushing sessions the power slowly ramps up so you can become accustomed to the feel of the vibration and ease your way into electric toothbrush use.

First, I asked two friends who are dentists what they prefer. One friend strongly recommended the Sonicare FlexCare+, stating that the top of the line models are not any better. The other provided a similar recommendation to my dentist – either one will be a huge improvement over a manual brush. So slight tilt to the Sonicare at this point. Very slight because not much detail was provided as to why the Sonicare was better. Just a “trust me, get this” endorsement.
If the increased amount of space taken up on store shelves is any indication, the electric brushes are growing in popularity. Some of them are kid-friendly: The toothbrush handle may take on the shape of a racing car or a mermaid or a cell phone, and its color may resemble army camouflage.

One more case study in the edition volume 6, 1995 conducted a clinical comparative study between oscillating-rotating and sonic toothbrushes in terms of plaque removing ability, safety and user satisfaction. After daily use for 8 weeks, both performed equally well in reducing dental plaque and gingivitis. There were no safety issues in both the devices as well. As far as user satisfaction is concerned, Braun Oral B (oscillating-rotating) was rated better than Sonicare (sonic).
Aside from these older tests, we didn’t find any independently conducted research that both draws the conclusion that one model or type is better than another and explains the process and results. And none of our experts differentiated between the plaque removal ability in any of the types or models of brushes available.
Prevention is becoming increasingly important. Dental related diseases are largely preventable and there is a growing burden on health care systems for cure. Dental public health looks beyond the role of a dental practitioner in treating dental disease, and seeks to reduce demand on health care systems by redirection of resources to priority areas.[4] Countries around the world all face similar issues in relation to dental disease. Implementation of policies and principles vary due to available of resources. Similar to public health, an understanding of the many factors that influence health will assist the implementation of effective strategies.[4]
Maglares is on the road to recovery and indebted to her dentist. “If I hadn’t gone to the dentist, I don’t know if I’d be alive today. I pay a lot more attention to my teeth and gums. I believe it’s all connected.”
“The crux of this issue is that the Sonicare has no clinical evidence to show that it’s better at cleaning than a normal brush whereas the Oral-B does. Lots of it. You can click the links and read the papers for yourself.”
More than one-third of Americans face serious challenges in accessing dental care, including lack of insurance, prohibitive cost, too few providers, and mobility and transportation problems.1 As state policymakers around the country seek to better understand and take action to solve this crisis, five major issues will drive or hinder the success of those efforts:
I am not a focused person, so using a manual brush I only ever gave my teeth a quick brush for maybe thirty seconds before calling it a day. The timer on this guy, though, makes sure that I brush my teeth for the recommended three minutes time instead of slacking off like I’d done before. The bristles themselves are soft, too, which doesn’t irritate my gums. I can run the brush over where my gums are the worst with some bleeding but no pain, which is AWESOME since those gums need the brushing the most. After my first brush trying this when it arrived, I couldn’t remember the last time my teeth felt so smooth and clean. Seriously, if you hate brushing your teeth but REALLY need to, you need this product!

Our review is the first of its kind to evaluate the available evidence on the effectiveness of two types of strategies that are highly relevant for care providers when providing oral care to nursing home residents: (a) strategies to prevent or overcome nursing home residents’ responsive behaviors related to oral care, and (b) strategies to encourage and motivate nursing home residents with some self-care capabilities to complete parts of their oral care on their own. Nursing home care providers consistently report residents’ responsive behaviors as one of the most dominant and challenging barriers to providing oral care [49–52]. Supporting residents’ self-care abilities may improve residents’ quality of life [96, 97] and oral health [72, 73]. Multi-component programs to improve oral care in nursing homes often include components like managing residents’ behavioral problems and supporting residents’ self-care abilities [59–61]. However, these components are often not described in sufficient detail and their theoretical and empirical foundation is often unclear [59–61]. Therefore, we were looking for studies that specifically included and described the two types of strategies mentioned above, and assessed their effectiveness.
Thanks to many many dentist visits as a child for my fair share of cavities, I can say I have some pretty healthy teeth. They’re also pretty straight thanks to expensive braces. However, my reality is not the reality for everyone in the world for a variety of reasons. Different diets and access to affordable dental care all play a big role in people’s dental health and hygiene. For example, some of the same countries on this list of 11 Countries with Free Health Care, will also be found on this list. For that matter they will likely overlap with those on this list of 11 Countries With the Best Healthcare In the World. If you haven’t figured it out already, access to affordable healthcare is important all across the world, no matter the size of a country. You can do all the brushing and flossing you want, but all teeth eventually have their problems.
In order to fully charge, the Pro 1000 took about 16 hours. This is 8 hours less than the Pro 7000 took. It also lasted longer than the Pro 7000 by 2 days (10 days total). Since there is only one brushing mode available, we were not able to play around and conduct different time-based tests.
Next I searched for any studies comparing rotary (Oral-B) to oscillating (Sonicare) power brush heads. I won’t post links to all the scientific studies I read, but the are quite a few on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) site. The more recent ones favor rotary brush heads.
Good self-care, such as brushing with fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing, and professional treatment, is key to good oral health.1, 2, 3, 4 Health behaviors that can lead to poor oral health include:

What to use: Choose a brush with soft or medium bristles, which are gentler on the gums and may clean better because they’re more flexible. The brush design does not appear to influence effectiveness, so choose any one you like.
An extensive review of the literature search was done (electronic and manual) which engaged most of the articles published in peer-reviewed journals relating to the subject of primary care in dentistry. The review itself began with the search of relevant key words linked with the dental and medical profession like primary care, dental health, dental office, dentistry, oral physicians etc. in various search engines including PubMed, MEDLINE, etc. Reports published only in English language were included in the review. The spotlight of the present review would not only be on primary care interventions which can be performed in the dental clinic or office but also on the modification of dental education curriculum. The review also targeted status of primary care in the dental profession in India and willingness of the Indian dentists to perform primary care procedures.
Everyone benefits from preventive dentistry. Children, in particular, benefit because it allows their newly developing adult teeth to come in strong and healthy. Dental sealants and topical fluoride treatments help prevent decay in your children’s teeth. If you’re an aging adult, you can benefit from preventive dentistry because it helps you to keep your real teeth.

The All Pro Dental Care office is a modern practice that features all the most advanced dental technology. Rather than traditional X-rays, we use digital radiography for photography of teeth. Digital radiography allows for a reduced level of radiation as compared to traditional X-rays, and it is also much faster. This technology allows our doctors to make the most precise possible diagnosis and helps them determine the ideal treatment path to take. Another important piece of technology here at All Pro Dental Care is the intraoral camera used for teeth photography. It provides much greater levels of magnification than an ordinary x-ray image can provide. From our high-tech machines to our massaging dental chairs, we believe that our patients deserve only the very best.
Can such skills be taught and learned? It is possible. For example, although training on listening or conversational skills is an understudied topic and much of this work is inconclusive, a number of research findings suggest that such skills can be taught and learned. Active listening skills have been effectively taught to students and professionals in medicine [55], speech pathology [56], and early childhood education [57]. Similarly, instruction in conversational skills, communication skills, asking apt questions, and/or health coaching has succeeded in selected medical and dental school settings [58, 59, 60]. Given such preliminary evidence, this begs the question—do we desire to teach these skills? Is it important to us that dentists of the present and future are comfortable working with a wide range of patients to promote health and the prevention of disease? From an ethical perspective, the answer should be yes. From the perspective of doing the right thing for the patient, the answer should be yes. However, as stated earlier, the reality of current insurance funding (i.e., paying for procedures) [1] is a very serious obstacle, especially for persons with high levels of student debt. Nonetheless, assuming that promoting health and a greater focus on prevention (along with arresting progression of disease) is important and desirable, how do we do this?
As the son of a dentist (sounds bad, doesn’t it!) I can attest to people not brushing enough… I saw this many times, self-reported from patients. The timer helps, but I don’t believe that this is the only factor.

You can’t see it, but your brush head wears over time. Blue reminder bristles fade in color to let you know when it’s time to replace the brush head. Dental professionals recommend replacing your brush head every three months. Sonicare technology helps you remove up to two times more plaque compared to a manual toothbrush.
We do think Sonicare toothbrushes are great and important products but just for one main reason, their full-power 31,0000 brush-strokes-per-minute brushing action. (This is labeled as “Clean” mode on almost all models.)

To prevent plaque buildup, brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft, rounded-tip bristled toothbrush. Pay particular attention to the space where the gums and teeth meet. Use a fluoride-containing toothpaste.
Education Teaching proper oral care is an important component of being a dental hygienist, and these professionals should be well-educated on best practices so they can communicate them to their patients. Whether instructing in proper flossing technique or how to clean braces, this is a daily component of the role.
The biggest problem with the Essence is that you’re severely limited on the style of replacement brush heads. And for that reason the Essence+, while newer and less tested but seemingly the same mechanism, to us seems to make the better choice.
Dental hygienists work primarily in dentist’s offices, removing plaque and tartar from the teeth of patients. Dental hygienists also take X-rays, apply fluoride and sealants to patient’s teeth, and instruct patients about how to care for their teeth. Most hygienists have an associate degree in dental hygiene, and must become licensed before obtaining work.
Do not boil, microwave, or place your toothbrush in the dishwasher in order to sanitize it because these may damage your toothbrush. In order to sanitize your toothbrush all you need to do is soak it in an antibacterial solution for at least 10 minutes. Solutions you may use for cleaning are: antibacterial mouthwash that contains alcohol, mixture of 1/3 bleach and 2/3 water, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar.
At $165, the DiamondClean is our most expensive toothbrush. But we think it earns its hefty price tag. One of the benefits is the inclusion of a pressure sensor that actually activates without needing an unreasonable amount of pressure. Although we didn’t make pressure sensors a must-have (due to the variability in the technology), the feature came highly recommended from our experts and the DiamondClean’s sensor is top-of-the-line. When even slightly too much pressure is applied, the handle vibrates and a purple light flashes until you ease up. The closest competitor was the Oral-B 8000 which also came with an accurate pressure sensor and app compatibility. However, the core difference between the DiamondClean and Oral-B 8000 came down to usability. In short, the DiamondClean’s features were much easier to use.

Between cleanings by a dental hygienist, good oral hygiene is essential for preventing tartar build-up which causes the problems mentioned above. This is done through careful, frequent brushing with a toothbrush, combined with the use of dental floss or interdental brushes to prevent accumulation of plaque on the teeth.[9] Powered toothbrushes reduce dental plaque and gingivitis more than manual toothbrushing in both short and long term.[10] Further evidence is needed to determine the clinical importance of these findings.[10]

The new replacement head works just as well as the old one. If I have to replacement every three months, that’s fine. I agree with other reviewers – it’s a small price to pay to avoid high dental bills.
I thought maybe it was just a design difference and not a performance difference, as the gum health is not very good looking compared to the Flexcare+ and that the 31000 vibrations were what counted, but the gum care model was a big disappointment. Unpleasant noise and lower amplitude at the strokes compared to the Flexcare+ and also the handle vibrated, so more an experience like the Oral B, though I think it is still cleaning better than the Oral B.
A 2008 study published in The Journal of Clinical Dentistry analyzed five clinical studies and concluded that baking soda paste or powder can more efficiently remove plaque than non-baking soda products.
1987 – Unsupervised practice: Hygienists may have their own dental hygiene practice; there are no requirement for the authorization or supervision of a dentist for most services. Colorado is currently the only state where this is approved. Case was won by JoAnn Grant, a dental hygienist from Fort Collins, CO. [40]
Security: The services that dental hygienists provide are needed and valued by a large percentage of the population. There is currently a great demand for dental hygienists. Employment opportunities will be excellent well into the future. Due to the success of preventive dentistry in reducing the incidence of oral disease, the expanding older population will retain their teeth longer, and will be even more aware of the importance of regular dental care. With the emphasis on preventive care, dentists will need to employ more dental hygienists than ever before to meet the increased demand for dental services.
Most dental professionals agree that a soft-bristled brush is best for removing plaque and debris from your teeth. Small-headed brushes are also preferable, since they can better reach all areas of the mouth, including hard-to-reach back teeth
Exactly! They Never give you any remedies, only charge, charge, charge, Went yesterday to a dentist and she took her metal tool and tapped my abscessed tooth so hard I had to go to the hospital in pain, no compassion just a quick assessment to see what I needed and what they would charge to do it. And off I went with antibiotics and pain pills. Hope some of these natural remedies work. I am in horrible pain from my head ears, throat, jaw, and very sick. I feel dizzy and feel my heart racing. I am really worried.
Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping one’s mouth clean and free of disease and other problems (e.g. bad breath) by regular brushing and cleaning between the teeth. It is important that oral hygiene be carried out on a regular basis to enable prevention of dental disease. The most common types of dental disease are tooth decay (cavities, dental caries) and gum diseases, including gingivitis, and periodontitis.[1] Regular brushing consists of brushing twice a day: after breakfast and before going to bed. Cleaning between the teeth is called interdental cleaning and is as important as tooth brushing.[2] This is because a toothbrush cannot reach between the teeth and therefore only cleans 50% of the surfaces. There are many tools to clean between the teeth, including floss, flossettes, and interdental brushes. It is up to each individual to choose which tool he or she prefers to use.
I think it’s a rare person who needs/wants DiamondClean. I will say on the newest DiamondClean, the “Deep Clean,” mode uses a particular pattern of vibrations combined with the Adaptive Clean head that is the best clean I have ever had, but we’re talking small details and not important to 99.9 percent of folks.

Even the extra soft bristles in Sonicare brush heads must maintain a certain stiffness to effectively remove plaque. Studies show that bristles begin to lose their stiffness due to splay and fatigue after three months of normal use though, these changes are only visible with a microscope.
Take advantage of this by being a model patient. Brush and floss regularly. Eat a healthy diet, filled with plenty of fruit and vegetables. And keep up with regular check-ups and appointments, because your visits to the dentist are what determine whether you need a quick clean or a more extensive treatment. To make the former more likely, give your teeth the tender love and care that they deserve.
Just a little FYI, make sure you are replacing your brush at least every 4-6 months because the bristles truly are not cleaning as effectively any longer. That’s not just a gimmick to get you to buy a new one 😉 The tips of the bristles become rough & aren’t working the same. Also if your bristles are flayed, then you NEED a new one! You also need to stop scrubbing with so much pressure.
But a simple rinse doesn’t remove all traces of bacteria anyway, and a damp toothbrush is a fantastic breeding ground for bacteria to spend all night long multiplying. So by morning, your toothbrush still looks clean – but it’s far from sanitary.

Features such as timers, UV sterilizers, and smartphone connectivity are as useful as your iPhone’s Siri feature. They might be cool to have, so you can tell your friends about. But, at the end of the day, they fail to add any real value to essential goal of a toothbrush, which is cleaning teeth.

Dental sealants, which are applied by dentists, cover and protect fissures and grooves in the chewing surfaces of back teeth, preventing food from becoming trapped and thereby halt the decay process. An elastomer strip has been shown to force sealant deeper inside opposing chewing surfaces and can also force fluoride toothpaste inside chewing surfaces to aid in remineralising demineralised teeth.[8]
I tried one of these. Yes, the frequency is traded against amplitude but the movement is so small that when the tip of a bristle is pressed against a tooth it stops moving almost entirely while the shaft of the bristle continues to move.
The brushes themselves are small than those of philips’ brushes and cut into wavy shapes to fit the Outlines of each tooth. They are soft and round tips to prevent excessive abrasions of your gums. However, they are very durable because I bought the first one (this is about a month ago, still half the life span).
Although experts don’t know for sure what starts atherosclerosis, the process seems to stem from damage to the lining of the arterial wall. This damage, which enables the deposition of plaque, may result from:
A 2014 study published in the International Journal of Current Microbiology and Applied Sciences showed that guava leaf extract causes a reduction in the adhesion of early plaque. It has excellent antibacterial and biofilm-inhibition activity against Streptococcus mutans that cause dental plaque.
A 2014 study published in the International Journal of Advanced Health Sciences suggests that a significant amount of dissolution of plaque dextran was observed in vinegar (4 percent acetic acid) as compared to distilled water and glycerin.
If you are lucky, your Philips Sonicare will fail while still under guarantee, and they will replace it. Our experience was it failed just after the guarantee expired. Knowing we liked it, someone bought us another one. Guess, what, it too failed (just within guarantee).
ProResult Gum Health – This is a slightly more affordable toothbrush head for cleaning your gums in comparison to the DiamondClean and the InterCare brush heads. Your toothbrush can become a breeding ground for germs, which is one reason why you ought to change it every 3 months. However, germs multiply in minutes, not months, and need to be cleaned between swaps. How do you keep your toothbrush clean? Here are some ideas.
The Sonicare 2 Series isn’t without perks, though. When you first start using it, the Sonicare starts off with lower vibrations in order to ease you through the adjustment experience. Our tester appreciated this and told us “the fact that it gently eases into cleaning at full force over 14 sessions makes the experience feel more thoughtful.” We agree, and appreciate that the Sonicare focuses on getting you more comfortable with a proper brushing experience.
Dental hygienists work together with other dental professionals, with a higher number working at general practices with Dentists, dental therapists and oral health therapists. A smaller number work at specialist practices alongside orthodontists and periodontists. They help with the contribution of an interdisciplinary approach, aiming to provide optimum oral health care to their patients. Dental hygienists also aim to work inter-professionally to provide holistic oral health care in the best interest of their patient. Dental hygienists also offer expertise in their field and can provide a dental hygiene diagnosis, which is an integral component of the comprehensive dental diagnosis.[7]
Reminder bristles ensure your most effective clean At first glance it may not be obvious, but brush heads lose stiffness and gradually wear down over months of normal use. Blue reminder bristles fade to white and help you recognise when it’s time for a replacement. For optimal results, replace your brush head every three months.

The Braun 1000 (and Canadian 2000 model) oscillate 8800 times per minute and pulsate 20,000 times per minute. The 3000, 4000, and 5000 models oscillate at the same rate but pulsate at 40,000 per minute. There are some that say that the 40,000 pulsations act similar to Sonicare’s 31,000 micro-vibrating sweeps, that clean beyond where the toothbrush comes in contact with your teeth…by spraying water, toothpaste and saliva between teeth etc. The 20,000 pulsations are theoretically less effective than the 40,000 pulsations in this respect.
You mention the 4100, which seems to be priced (on the Sonicare website) more along the lines of the Sonicare 2 and 3. Sonicare has a history of producing toothbrushes aimed at specific lower-end price points and we’re not so sure those are the right brushes for us. We’ll have more to say in a week or two.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that all of the bargain models aren’t good brushes or can’t be effective when used. In fact, some of them represent the best Sonicares of yesteryear (the Essence and its updated version the Essence+ models).
“My favorite electric toothbrush is from Rotadent,” says Kourosh Maddhi, a cosmetic dentist based in Beverly Hills, Calif. “It has very soft bristles, thus minimizing damage to the gum.” The brush automatically shuts off after 2 and a half minutes of use, and the charge lasts up to 3 weeks.

Dentists collaborating with dental hygienists do not need to be present to authorize or administer treatment. However, dental hygienists must have the availability to communicate with a dentist in order to review patient records and establish emergency protocols. Hygienists need to apply to the state department of community health for grantee status.[43]
Unfortunately despite being quite well known, the Violife Zapi Luxe UV toothbrush sanitizer range is currently one to avoid. They have proven to be very unreliable and to fail quickly despite being a lot more expensive than the models above. It seems they went for cute over quality. Hopefully they will fix the problems and come back with a better model.
Omega 3 fatty acids are fats commonly found in marine and plant oils. They are considered essential fatty acids, meaning that they cannot be synthesized in the body but are vital for healthy metabolism. They are thought to play an important role in reducing inflammation throughout the body.
Foreo’s products are easily distinguished by their vibrant colors. Their Issa toothbrush makes no exception. Available in vivacious lavender, bright yellow, cobalt blue, dark blue and black colors, this toothbrush will beautify any bathroom cabinet.
Add to that the fact that most dental HMO’s require that dental offices do hygiene for “no copay” (HMO speak for “free”) hygiene becomes very difficult. A hygienist is expected to produce 3 times as much in billing as she gets paid. It is rather hard to do this with the waiting room packed with patients anxious to get their nocopy cleanings.
Stent placement. A small tube called a stent, which may contain medication, can be placed in an artery to maintain adequate blood flow. A catheter is used through the artery of the leg to reach the heart, and a stent is put in place through the catheter in the area of the blockage.
Philips Sonicare reminder bristles are designed to give you a visual indication of this microscopic breakdown, letting you know when it’s time to replace your brush head. If you use your brush head twice a day for the full two minutes, it needs to be replaced every three months.

In their earlier work, the researchers showed how certain mechanisms regulated by vitamin D3 help clear amyloid-beta, the abnormal protein found in sticky plaques that clog up the important communication space between brain cells in people with Alzheimer’s.
1. Allow for the AC adapter to fit flat against the wall as opposed to sticking straight out. It looks awkward permanently sticking out of a bathroom outlet. I wound up purchasing and installing an outlet with USB ports so I can skip the adapter and plug the charger directly through the USB port. It is a little less conspicuous.
There are many options out there to disinfect your toothbrush ranging from special UV lamps to using bleach, dishwashing soap and your dishwasher!  Thankfully, keeping your toothbrush clean and infection-free does not need to be so complicated.  In fact, you most likely have the ingredients sitting in your cabinet right now.

!! This is an important point because despite what type your brush came with originally, you can switch to any other (style or size) head. That makes for a lot of options. (More information about brush heads.)
Arteries are a critical blood vessel in circulation. These are the large blood vessels that send oxygenated blood from the heart and lungs out to the rest of the body. Due to unhealthy diet, age and lack of exercise, plaque can accumulate on the walls of the arteries and ultimately lead to heart attacks and strokes. Most often, doctors use medical treatments to reduce plaque when it is severe. The good news is you can take steps to cut down on plaque naturally before you get to that point.
Early models consisted of disposable batteries because the technology was not advanced enough. Nowadays, rechargeable batteries are the standard. However, manufacturers are now competing to design longer lasting batteries.
DiamondClean brush heads are Sonicare’s newest Snap-On brush heads and come in standard and compact sizes. What is so special about them is that have a diamond shaped bristles pack together in a higher density bristle field (44% more bristles in the standard size and 23% in the compact size) to help sweep away more plaque. From what I can gather, it appears that the claims of better cleaning with the DiamondClean toothbrush have more to do with the brush head than that particular model of toothbrush so you might try this brush head on another model and get a similar result. The one problem I see is that bristles are advertised as medium-stiffness, which can be harsh on the the gums and exposed tooth roots and cause toothbrush abrasion if you are not careful.
Your mouth is home to millions of bacteria so cleaning your toothbrush makes sense if you want to prevent illness. You should be cleaning your toothbrush every week and it is also wise to keep a supply of new toothbrushes on hand so you can readily replace the old one every three months.  If you use and electric toothbrush, the heads are replaceable and can be cleaned and disinfected in the same way as a conventional toothbrush.
Dr. Katia Friedman, dentist and owner of Friedman Dental Group, explained that, “When we brush by hand, we average about 300 strokes per minute, which isn’t bad. But electric toothbrushes can average up to 31,000 to 40,000 strokes per minute. One of the main benefits of the vibrations or oscillations is that it cleans your teeth more thoroughly — it eliminates plaque and bacteria better than a manual toothbrush due to the increased number of strokes that it provides.”
So we looked for, at minimum, brushes with a two-minute timer, but still wanted to test higher-end brushes to compare their usability against that of the simplest models. We eliminated brushes without rechargeable batteries because loose batteries are a hassle and a waste. We also eliminated models that were reviewed as loud or having either short battery life or a too-small range of compatible brush heads. If a brush was compatible with a wide range of brush heads, that was a small point in its favor.

Eventually, the plaque grows enough that oxygen can no longer penetrate it. This kills off the aerobic bacteria, which need oxygen to live. At this point, anaerobic bacteria of many kinds begin to colonize the plaque. S. mutans is facultatively anaerobic, meaning that it can survive without oxygen if it needs to. The S. mutans and other anaerobic bacteria use biochemical fermentation pathways to break down sucrose, which generates lactic acid as a byproduct. This lactic acid can decrease the plaque’s pH to 5.5 or lower, which is the threshold at which enamel demineralization can occur.
First off, I did a bunch of research for myself to compare OralB vs Sonicare and found that they were mostly comparable, when the user was properly “trained”. The biggest issue I found (and my own non-parent dentist can confirm) was that the small/round head caused more problems for patients, as they didn’t know how to use it “well”. In other words, the small head required different operation than the traditional “long” head style… as confirmed by studies (I can’t find this one at the moment) and my dentist.
We’ve run across two retailers (Bed, Bath & Beyond and Target) who tend to have Sonicare models, as well as other electrics, on display. And since various models come with different brush heads, you’ll have an assortment of designs to touch and evaluate first hand. (Note: The display models don’t actually run.)
Many Sonicare brushes feature Quadpacer or BrushPacer. These functions signal when you should advance to cleaning the next portion of your mouth. Not everyone values this type of indicator. We state below which models allow you to deactivate it.
At minimum a concern involving the possibility of repair would be if the water-tight nature of the brush is compromised. If so, it’s only a matter of time until internal problems develop. We would think Sonicare customer service would be the right place to start with your issue.

Brush your teeth twice daily. Brushing your teeth is by far the most effective way of removing plaque, and brushing properly and regularly will help to ensure that less plaque builds up over time. This is important as built-up plaque can calcify into tartar, which is a lot harder to remove. You should brush your teeth once a day at the very least, but dentists recommend brushing twice; once in the morning and once before bed.[3]
Use baking soda. This is one of the oldest natural remedies for home plaque removal. Simply shake a small amount of baking soda into a bowl, wet your toothbrush, then dip the bristles into the baking soda to coat. Brush your teeth as normal. If you like, you can also mix a pinch of salt into the baking powder.[5]
“So satisfied with this electric toothbrush: It’s my favorite fancy-pink color, has a super-amazing design, and is very convenient to use. It has a very powerful cleaning system. After brushing, my teeth feel so clean, and it can effectively improve gum and oral health. Great product!”
Dental hygienists can receive their necessary education with either a two-year associate degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. Each degree will yield the clinical training necessary to work in the field; however, a bachelor’s degree program will provide more in-depth studies and practice in the field.
The Oral-B Vitality electric toothbrush provides a superior clean vs. a regular manual toothbrush. The round shape of the Floss Action toothbrush head is designed to clean tooth by tooth, and its MicroPulse bristles reach deep between teeth. 2D cleaning action oscillates and rotates for better plaque removal than a regular manual toothbrush and an in-handle timer helps you brush for a dentist-recommended 2 minutes. Best of all, it’s brought to you by Oral-B – the brand used by dentists worldwide.

3) Tartar and build-up under the gumline. This is determined by an explorer. Hygienists are highly trained to detect tartar under the gumline by using tactile sensitivity. Also, if the tartar has been there for many years you may be ably to see it on the x-ray. Ask your hygienist if they can see the tartar on the x-ray. If they can’t, this doesn’t mean it is not there. Tartar has many different forms, it can be in sheets, grainy, or chunky. It can also be white, black, or green. It all depends how long it has been there.
How To Use Your electric toothbrush? Wet the brush head and apply toothpaste. Place the toothbrush in the mouth and turn on. Guide the brush head slowly from tooth to tooth. Hold the toothbrush head in place for a few seconds before moving on to the next tooth. Brush the gums as well as the teeth, first the outsides, then the insides, finally the chewing surfaces. Oral-B offers a variety of toothbrush heads to fit your personal oral health needs.

Special Care Dentistry Act of 2011: While this legislation has not been reintroduced in the current session of Congress, it would have extended dental services to millions of individuals by requiring states to provide oral health services to aged, blind, or disabled people under the Medicaid program. The federal government would cover 100% of the cost of this expansion.[14]
Take extra precautions if you have braces or other appliances. Studies show that people who are wearing appliances on their teeth collect more germs on their toothbrushes.[20] Rinse with antibacterial mouthrinse before brushing to reduce the amount of bacteria deposited on the toothbrush.[21]
There are many different types of Sonicare toothbrushes available on the market today. In order to decide which is the best for your name, you will need to consider the various features that you would possibly want in a toothbrush. Let us take a look at some of the most popular Sonicare toothbrush models and at what they are designed to be used for.

Dental sealants  provide a physical barrier on the chewing surfaces of permanent molars and prevent over 80 percent of cavities 2 years after placement.9 Experts recommend sealant programs administered through schools to increase the number of children who receive sealants. These programs typically target schools attended by a large number of children at high risk for tooth decay. Studies indicate that delivering sealants to high-risk children can offer Medicaid a positive return on investment at 2 years.10
• In the short term, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) can support states by disseminating rules and policies that promote Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) beneficiaries’ access to appropriate care, and ensuring that its rules and polices reflect the practice abilities of current and new types of licensed providers.
“Oral-B’s mission is to promote oral health and work closely with dental professionals to continue the care that starts in their chair,” she continues. “At Oral-B, we believe a healthy mouth is part of a healthy body and promoting good oral health and hygiene during pregnancy is one way we can help.”
Enamel is the thin outer covering of the tooth. Although thin, enamel is a tough layer responsible for protecting teeth from wear and tear of daily use such as biting, chewing, and grinding. It is transparent, and the colour that you see is the colour of the dentin, the inner layer of the tooth that’s under the enamel. Despite its durability, the enamel is still susceptible to breaking down or enamel erosion.
The consultation reinforced the importance of the contribution which PCDs and support staff make to the delivery of services, and a wish to see that more clearly recognised and rewarded. To ensure an appropriate balance within the dental workforce:
Worked great at first. Held a charge for a long time and then it started to shut off after about 15 second and now it runs for about 3 seconds and shuts off even after a full charge. Bought it in September and would have expected it to last longer than a few months.
Importantly is cleans the teeth well.  The sonic cleaning action really works its magic and is soft on the teeth and gums and the brush is nice and quiet too. It comes provided with an AdaptiveClean brush head (a few extras would not have gone a miss) and we really like the fact that the built in timer turns the brush off at the end of a 2 minute clean.

Part of the reason for the higher price is the inclusion, as with the Genius 9000 above, of smartphone app support, but again we just don’t feel like this is accurate enough to be worth bothering with – it often doesn’t register you’re doing any brushing at all, when you are, and can also fail to correctly detect which part of your mouth you’re currently cleaning.
The comparison doesn’t even come close and I really can’t understand why anyone would spend the extra money for the Diamond model when you’re not getting all the features of this model! The Platinum has the ultraviolet sanitizer for the brush head that my old model had. I really like that feature because the brush head is prone to all kinds of bacterial growth. I’m shocked the Diamond model doesn’t have that included for the money they’re wanting for that model. Finally, I greatly prefer the White Platinum color over the Black Diamond color for a toothbrush. I don’t know what Philips was thinking with that LOL! THIS is the best value in their line-up for sure!
Unique MicroPulse bristles are designed to reach and clean deep between the teeth to give a floss like clean whilst other bristles focus on the tooth surfaces and the gum line to help lift and remove plaque.
•Most advanced Glide floss is designed for patients with mild to moderate gingivitis. When pressing too hard (1) Red light on handle turns on, signaling patient to reduce pressure. Do not use on children under the age of 3.
If you’ve never used a Sonicare toothbrush before, you will notice immediately that it’s a very vigorous cleaning. It may even be uncomfortable at first. This Sonicare has an Easy Start mode that gradually increases the power of the brushing action over a two week period to help you get used to it. Easy Start is activated when you first use the toothbrush as long as you do not use the Clean+White setting, which is the most vigorous setting. Additionally, this model has a Sensitive setting for people with sensitive teeth.
These snacks aren’t known as dental detergents for nothing. Crunchy fruits and vegetables increase the flow of cleansing saliva, giving your mouth a fresh feeling.  Just be sure the fruits you choose between meals aren’t high in acid; they can be hard on your tooth enamel.

Professional cleanings use toothpaste that smells and tastes like regular toothpaste, though you can often choose between flavors. However, it has a gritty consistency that gently scrubs your teeth. If done by a professional, this polishing of the teeth is deemed safe to do twice a year. But don’t be as harsh with your teeth at home, because you’ll wear down the enamel.
Sometimes, you might be brushing too hard but you’re not aware of it. This can cause soreness and bleeding. Over time, this can lead to serious damage, such as gum recession.  The pressure sensor. Highly recommended by experts, a pressure sensor will buzz, beep, signal a light, or even pause your brushing to warn you that you could be brushing too hard.
I bought this electric toothbrush about 10 months ago and it has stopped working. I bought it to replace a basic Braun Oral-B that I had for 10+ years. I guess when you add all the bells and whistles it takes away quality and longevity since this only lasted 10 months. I’m very disappointed in this …  see moreof Frantz91’s review
It is difficult to get good role models of oral health in society as most locals and even popular local personalities are models of tobacco consumption and unkempt oral health. In the absence of a role model children have no one to learn from except morbid mouths. It is therefore necessary for the health-care provider especially in rural setting to select examples for rural setting and incorporate them for education purpose whenever possible.
The oral health of children in the UK tells a similar story. The amount of decayed, missing or filled teeth in 12 year olds averaged 4.8 a generation ago – an unthinkable scenario for today’s standards. Latest figures have shown this average has reduced to as little as 0.7 and, alongside Germany, is the best in Europe.
As mentioned earlier, there are also some differences in what each of these handles focuses on. The Oral-B 5000’s emphasis is plaque removal around the gum line. The emphasis of the 6000 is teeth whitening, and the emphasis of the 7000 is to provide an individualized tooth by tooth clean.
I’ve been using this brush for almost a year, and I’m totallly sold on its value. I switched from Sonicare to this brush after reading a summary of a study entitiled “A randomized 12-week clinical comparison of an oscillating-rotating toothbrush to a new sonic brush in the reduction of gingivitis and plaque”. After 130 brushers were randomized to two groups, 65 to Sonicare and 65 to Oral B oscillating and rotating model (O&R), their mouths were judged by the Modified Gingival Index (MGI), Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI), and the Rustogi Modified Navy Plaque Index (RMNPI) after six and twelve weeks of twice daily two minute brushing sessions. Those lucky mouths in the Oral B O&R group had it all over the Sonicare group with respect to plaque reduction at 6 weeks, and were significantly better off in both gingivitis and plaque categories at 12 weeks.
No study evaluated effects of screening by primary care providers on clinical outcomes. One good-quality cohort study found pediatrician examination associated with a sensitivity of 0.76 for identifying a child with cavities. No new trials evaluated oral fluoride supplementation. Three new randomized trials were consistent with previous studies in finding fluoride varnish more effective than no varnish (reduction in caries increment 18% to 59%). Three trials of xylitol were inconclusive regarding effects on caries. New observational studies were consistent with previous evidence showing an association between early childhood fluoride use and enamel fluorosis. Evidence on the accuracy of risk prediction instruments in primary care settings is not available.
We noticed that more than one online post by users stated that they (and often their dentist or hygienist too) felt that their brushing results were improved after switching to a different Oral-B head.
2.4 Million Native Americans suffer from poor oral health because of a lack of available dentists: In 2014, more than 2.4 million Native Americans lived in counties with dental care shortage areas, and half of all Native American children lived in a shortage area.5

Order Sonicare Types

That’s not necessarily a problem, or even completely correct. Even if the tip of the bristle is essentially immobile, it’s possible for a pressure wave to be transmitted through the various media involved.
Before we dive into our reviews, it is important to make the distinction between sonic and ultrasonic. The two categories are often blended into one, mistakenly comparing them to one another. Even though both types essentially fall under the electric toothbrush category, their functionalities differ to a great extent. Here is some further clarification on that note.
I very rarely floss. I know I should, but I don’t do it often. After switching to this brush, dentists have not told me that it looks like I don’t floss anymore! I am NOT saying you can avoid flossing by using this brush, but I take it to mean that it does a way better job than my old manual toothbrush ever did
Arteries are a critical blood vessel in circulation.
Philips Sonicare 3 Series Gum Health feels and works very similarly to the 2 Series, with a glossy plastic handle and minimal gripping ridges. Now that our runner-up comes with a quadrant timer, this toothbrush has no features that we think are worth spending extra on.
Adult toothpaste – when deciding which toothpaste to buy for yourself, or another adult, look at the benefits. For example, if you are looking to whiten teeth, whitening toothpaste could be a great option, or of you have sensitivity teeth, then toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth is a good idea.
Privately labeled models – China has begun to manufacture knockoffs of the better-known toothbrush brands. A lot of sellers have begun importing these generic products and give them private labels, such as Joe’s Super Brush. Okay, this is a bad example, but you do get what I mean. Such products are untested and most definitely not ADA approved. As such, they are usually cheaper, come with fewer warranties and guarantees, if any, and could even be dangerous to use.
The terms ‘plaque’ and ‘tartar’ are commonly used in an interchangeable fashion. And, as they are very similar, this is not usually a problem. They are different things, however; plaque is the actual bacteria that causes decay and cavities. The tartar on your teeth is an accumulation of stains, saliva, food, dirt, and grime. It makes it easier for the plaque to take a hold of teeth.
Not all generic toothbrush heads are the same! Neurora is committed to provide high-quality generic Sonicare replacement toothbrush heads for Phillips, customer’s satisfaction and pleasure is our pursuit.
To us, battery isn’t an insignificant consideration. But if a particular model met our needs in all other ways, we’d let this one slip by. This page discusses the subject of battery options in greater detail.
How to Remove Tartar BuildupHow to Remove Plaque at HomeRemoving plaque at home on a daily basis lessens your chances of tartar buildup and experiencing more serious dental problems such as cavities, gingivitis, and bad breath. Healthy dental habits, such as brushing for two minutes twice daily and flossing after every brush, can help you prevent the harmful effects of plaque buildup. If you have kids, remember: It’s never too early to help them learn good oral care.Manual brushes can be effective. But Oral-B® Electric Toothbrushes make it even easier to brush the dentist-recommended two minutes and remove 100% more plaque than a regular manual toothbrush. Remove 22% More Plaque with Oral-B than Sonicare*This easy at-home routine, along with using Oral-B Electric Toothbrushes, can help ensure you’ll keep your mouth healthy for a long time to come.

The best way to have the plaque removed is by a dental professional, such as a dental hygienist. Some hygienists use an ultrasonic instrument called a Cavitron, others use a dental scaler instrument, and others use a combination of the two. There are also scalers that you can purchase from your local pharmacy to scrape off visible plaque, but if you use the scaler incorrectly then you can cause more damage to your teeth and gums.
You can also control tartar and plaque build-up with a hydrogen peroxide based mouthwash or cleanser. If you cannot find this type of product in your local pharmacy, it is pretty easy to knock a batch together yourself. Just take one tablespoon of antiseptic mouthwash and add three tablespoons of (3% only) hydrogen peroxide solution. You must make sure that the substance you use is of a suitable concentration or you could damage your teeth.
This model offers the standard quad pacer feature that breaks down your brushing routine into four 30-second cycles. This is to help you achieve even and well-controlled brushing. At around $30, this is the most effective and affordable toothbrush on the market.
Aura Clean offers two cleaning modes: the recommended Super Clean, and Sensitive Clean, for those with sensitive gums and teeth. To ensure you have the most thorough and complete cleaning experience, we’ve created a map of your mouth (which can be found in the included instruction manual) that splits it into quadrants. Every 30 seconds, Aura Clean briefly pauses so that you know it’s time to move onto the next quadrant. A timed cleaning where the brush actually does the work for you, tells you when to move on, and shuts off when you’re done. It’s truly foolproof!
My current sonicare died and I was very confused about the differences between the many, many models. Your excellent review helped me make up my mind as to a replacement. After perusing ebay (be careful about “used!”) I’ve ordered a replacement that was a good bit less expensive than the price quoted in your article. Thanks again!
Brushing timers – Smartimer / KidTimer – All Sonicare models come with some type of brushing timer, which usually runs on the order of two minutes or longer. Some people like having a timer because it helps them achieve a higher level of brushing discipline. Others find them annoying. (This feature typically cannot be deactivated.)
Looking forward to a review on “Water Flossers” or Dental irrigators. My kids dentist recommended them over traditional floss. There are so many of them available, so a review by wirecutter would be nice 😉
The 2 Series Sonicare is without a doubt consumers’ top pick. With over 4,000 positive reviews on Amazon and a 4.3 rating, this older model will not be extinct anytime soon. Especially now that it is available in 5 different colors, including a “white on ultra-coral” that I am itching to simply call “pink”. But, let’s leave color definitions to Philips.
There were a few things we didn’t like about it, though. First, it doesn’t switch off after two minutes — it simply pulses, meaning there’s a risk of missing the buzz and over-brushing. That said, if you like the chance to go over a tooth or two at the end of your clean, this may not bother you. It’s also pretty loud and, like oscillating brushes in general, can be harsh on the gums. One of our testers told us, “the Oral-B felt like a power tool while the Sonicare felt like a toothbrush.” The Oral-B also has a narrow handle which our small-handed tester didn’t mind, but if you have bigger hands or arthritis, you may find the larger handle of the Sonicare 2 Series easier to maneuver.
The Genius Pro 8000 comes equipped with a travel case that is also a charging station. It can charge your smartphone as well as your toothbrush using only one outlet. We found that when fully charged, the Lithium ION battery lasts 12 days when brushing twice a day.
Clinical procedures provided typically include removal of plaque, calculus and stains from the teeth; exposing and processing dental X-rays; applying cavity-preventive agents, such as fluorides and pit and fissure sealants; and administering antimicrobial agents. In some states, they also administer local anesthetics and nitrous oxide; place and carve filling materials, temporary fillings, and periodontal dressings; remove sutures; perform root-planing as a periodontal therapy; and polish restorations. In addition, they can provide clinical and laboratory diagnostic tests for interpretation by other health professionals.
This is where the compact brush heads come in.  Smaller in size, they cover less tooth surface area when in the mouth, but they are easier to move and manipulate in tighter spaces or harder to reach areas such as the back teeth.
The Goby is a brand-new product without the track record of Philips or Oral-B. Though we’re impressed by the Goby for its simplicity and efficacy, we can’t say yet how long it will last with daily use. It is simply too new a product and too new a company to know. Goby offers a lifetime warranty on its brush, but, as of now, it’s unclear if the company will outlive your brush.

The Oral-B Pro 1000 brush comes with a minimal charging pedestal that simply requires dropping the brush onto a peg. Fully charged, it lasts for at least a week of twice-daily two-minute brushing sessions before needing a recharge, which is on a par with the other toothbrushes we tested in this price range and plenty for most people.
That being said, it’s not a hard and fast rule that sonic electric toothbrushes are better than their oscillating counterparts. With modern operating modes and brush head technology, some oscillating electric toothbrushes are equally as efficient.
Did you see the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”? The father of the bride was always running around with a bottle of windex and using it for everything. Well, I’m like that with vinegar. I keep some in a spray bottle and use it for disinfecting and cleaning lots of things. I also spritz some vinegar on my toothbrush every night. But I’ve been wondering about the acidity… you’re not supposed to brush your teeth right away after eating or drinking something acidic because the acid softens the enamel on your teeth. So what about spraying my toothbrush with vinegar, would the acidity be neutralized after it dries overnight?
About once a month, I use a damp toothbrush dipped in baking soda and gently brush away from my gums, keeping it as dry as possible. Then I floss it under my gums in a downward then outward motion, which pulls the loose plaque out to be rinsed away. At 61, only 1 crown due to popcorn chipping off a corner. I use Reach rinse with fluoride with no alcohol. No need to ‘feel the burn’ to be germ free
“This brush is one mighty little powerhouse. The last two motorized toothbrushes we received and paid more for were ‘gutless wonders.’ So I thought just to get a cheap one, and if it doesn’t work, well, no big deal. The SURPRISE, however, was that this model works better than I’d even hoped for. My spouse’s brush cost ten times what this one does and I cannot see that he gets anything more from his high-priced brush compared to my new one.”
I think it’s ironic that “dental professionals” are on this website telling ppl what to do and what not to do. The other thing that’s ironic is that most of these “professionals” are telling ppl to go to dental schools or free or reduced clinics. What they aren’t saying is you can go to a free clinic all you want but there’s a catch. You may have to be the 25th caller that day out of the entire state, or you may have to be homeless living in a shelter or the most care you can get is cleaning or extraction but no one is removing your tartar buildup. Sorry to tell you also most dental schools only have a few events where they may see the public which means if you miss out guess what? Too bad. People act like we aren’t going to die anyway and last I checked dentistry was expensive. If this works for ppl let them do their own thing. I highly doubt cave men had dentist or any other people before the 21st century. I guess money is the real cause for concern here why spend $5 bucks at home when you should definitely break your neck to get to the dentist who will charge you $1,000’s. If this remedy works then use it if you don’t like a part of it take it out but don’t let anyone tell you what to do with teeth that are in your mouth!
Flexibility: The flexibility offered by full- and part-time employment options and availability of evening and weekend hours enable dental hygienists to balance their career and lifestyle needs. Hygienists also have opportunities to work in a wide variety of settings including private dental practices, educational and community institutions, research teams and dental corporations.
Thinking about becoming a dental hygienist? You’re about to embark on a growing career that was also ranked #1 in U.S. News & World Report’s 2018 Best Health Care Support Jobs. But how do you get from here to there? To become a dental hygienist, you’ll need to complete two steps.
Pay by Experience for a Dental Hygienist has a positive trend. An entry-level Dental Hygienist with less than 5 years of experience can expect to earn an average total compensation of $63,000 based on 5,149 salaries provided by anonymous users. Average total compensation includes tips, bonus, and overtime pay. A Dental Hygienist with mid-career experience which includes employees with 5 to 10 years of experience can expect to earn an average total compensation of $69,000 based on 2,426 salaries. An experienced Dental Hygienist which includes employees with 10 to 20 years of experience can expect to earn an average total compensation of $71,000 based on 2,948 salaries. A Dental Hygienist with late-career experience which includes employees with greater than 20 years of experience can expect to earn an average total compensation of $73,000 based on 2,359 salaries.
On their website Phillips claim that the EasyClean removes 2 x plaque while more expensive models remove up to 7 x plaque. Do you think this claim stands up? If it does, then, although I much prefer not to have the extra modes it looks like I must!
The three brush heads below were introduced alongside the DiamondClean Smart. Whilst they fit and work on other models, the included smart chip that automatically selects the optimal cleaning mode works only with the DiamondClean Smart because it has BrushSync mode pairing. When Sonicare introduces more brushes with BrushSync pairing mode, they will also be compatible with those brushes.
What many people call tartar, dentists refer to as plaque. Plaque is made up of bacteria that produce adhesive chemicals that can damage tooth enamel and eventually cause cavities. The best way to remove plaque is by brushing your teeth regularly and flossing. You can also help to remove plaque with pre-brush mouthwash that helps loosen it before you brush. According to Temple,Texas dentist, Stuart A. Greene, “Plaque begins forming on the teeth in as little as 4 hours after brushing. The rate at which plaque forms can vary between individuals and even between different teeth in the same mouth .”

X-rays, also known as radiographs, are an essential part of any dental care treatment plan. They are diagnostic, but they can also be preventive, by helping a dentist diagnose potential oral care issues in a patient’s mouth before they become a major problem.

Easy to travel with. “It’s easy to take a manual toothbrush with you when you travel. It’s not bulky like an electric toothbrush,” says Ictech-Cassis. You’ll be less likely to let your good dental care habits lapse on vacation with a toothbrush that you can easily bring along, he adds.
Maintaining good oral health includes keeping teeth free from cavities and preventing gum disease. Poor oral health can affect your appearance and self-esteem, and has been linked to sleeping problems, as well as behavioural and developmental problems in children. Poor oral health can also affect your ability to chew and digest food properly. Good nutrition is important to helping build strong teeth and gums that can resist disease and promote healing.

“Pregnancy is just one of the many phases of a woman’s life where fantastic and wonderful things happen but, at the same time, there might be an increased risk of certain diseases because of the major hormonal changes that a woman goes through,” warns Filippo Graziani, associate professor of periodontology at the University of Pisa.

Our study participants were drawn from a random sample of neighbourhoods in Toronto, which strengthens the generalizability of our findings to adults living in the city. While psychological stress can be challenging to measure accurately, our findings are based on an index based on diverse types of stress, which strengthens the internal validity of the findings. Our study was limited by its reliance on self-reported measures of perceived oral health and current stress, making the results subject to recall and social desirability biases. Our study was also limited by cross-sectional data collection; although it could be argued that poorer oral health status is not likely to lead participants to report higher levels of the indicators used to measure stress in this study. Still, in order to better understand the mechanisms linking psychological stress to oral disease, longitudinal study designs should be employed in future studies.

Recently I visited my dentist twice, one for tooth pain and the other for gum issues. I was told to brush my teeth in correct way and recommended to shift to an electric toothbrush. So I decided to try one. I ordered this brush for the attractive points, powerful cleaning, fast to charge and hold, optional modes for my sensitive gums, 2 minutes timer and 30 seconds reminder, waterproof for shower and bath and of course a fair price!
This toothbrush has, no exaggeration, changed my life. I have tried so many different things to whiten my teeth and improve my oral health in general. My teeth were NOTICEABLY whiter after just one use. I was absolutely blown away by how amazing this toothbrush was. I also had a few spots that my gums would typically bleed when brushing. Within a week of use, my gums stopped bleeding. My teeth feel so clean and fresh after using this toothbrush. It is ABSOLUTELY without question worth the $100 I spent on it ($30 off coupon, thanks Amazon!).

As examples, people seem to complain that this brush’s mechanism is noisy and less refined than the higher-end models. And some commenters on this page have complain that they consider this brush under powered (they don’t get the same “clean” as with more expensive Sonicares).
You don’t necessarily have to go out and buy products specifically for disinfecting a toothbrush. Soaking a toothbrush in an antiseptic mouthwash, freezing or boiling the toothbrush or putting it in an automatic dishwasher are all ways in which a toothbrush can be cleaned without buying specialized products [source: WorlDental].
If you’re interested in considering a sonic toothbrush that’s not a Sonicare, we’ve noticed the Braun Oral B Pulsonic. Its features list places it in the same general category as the Sonicare models we discuss on this page.
Warranty – Like all electronic gadgets, sonic toothbrushes are prone to failure due to manufacturing defects. One year full replacement warranty is the best we were able to find. For that reason, we set it as a standard for evaluation.
Ultraviolet (UV) light is one of the most common ways to disinfect a toothbrush. Typically, the brush head is stored in a small plastic container, which aims UV light at it for 6 to 8 minutes before and after brushing. Effervescent disinfecting tablets can also be used to sanitize toothbrushes; water and the tablet combine to create bubbles that sanitize the toothbrush as it soaks (about 10 minutes).
A 2014 study published in the International Journal of Advanced Health Sciences suggests that a significant amount of dissolution of plaque dextran was observed in vinegar (4 percent acetic acid) as compared to distilled water and glycerin.
But what we can share is this: 1) Our opinion/impression of each of the models (admittedly however unscientific that is), 2) What people have posted in our comments section below (thank you to those who do) and 3) What seems to be the collective opinion of consumers who have posted comments on retailer websites.
As the Industrial Revolution was catching up, so was the demand for new technological advances that could make life better. The standard of living was raised, and so were people’s demands for health products.
To us, battery isn’t an insignificant consideration. But if a particular model met our needs in all other ways, we’d let this one slip by. This page discusses the subject of battery options in greater detail.
These are great replacement toothbrush head for my Sonicare brush handle. I was using the oem brush head from sonicare for the past 2 years until I realized that there were cheaper alternatives online. I decided to give these a try and they function the exact same as the sonicare ones.Out of the box, the brush heads come with all the colored rings and brush head covers like the real ones do.
We found the downfall of the 7000 model in its NiMH battery. When brushing twice a day, while connected to the app, the battery only lasted for 8 days. Compared to other similar toothbrushes, this is not cool, to say the least. Especially when it takes 24 hours to fully charge the battery.
More attention should have been given to the fact that none of these toothbrushes has user-replaceable batteries. The planned obsolescence implied by this design is unacceptable; manufacturers need strong pressure to make it possible to replace the batteries in these things to justify the price!
Sterline also offers the widely marketed UV clean technology that is supposed to kill 99.9% of bacteria on brush heads. Arguably, once the brush heads are stored inside the case, the UV lights are activated and leftover germs are eliminated. This is something that we are not completely sold on. It has nothing to do with the brand, but with the technology itself. There is very little academic research to support these claims, and frankly, we could not find any that is reliably associated with well-known faculties.
The key differences were in gene expression and trascription patterns. The Alzheimer’s patients’ macrophages expressed inflammatory genes differently to those of the healthy controls, and there were two distinct groups of Alzheimer’s patients. In one group, the macrophages had increased transcription of inflammatory genes, while in the other, the transcription was decreased.
Another factor which affects the risk of developing cavities is the stickiness of foods. Some foods or sweets may stick to the teeth and so reduce the pH in the mouth for an extended time, particularly if they are sugary. It is important that teeth be cleaned at least twice a day, preferably with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, to remove any food sticking to the teeth. Regular brushing and the use of dental floss also removes the dental plaque coating the tooth surface.

Tracy, I was thinking the same thing. Scalers are not for the patient to use at home to remove tartar. You can break a tooth, especially one of the thinner anteriors. Even a chipped corner can change a person’s appearance when it’s a front tooth. Never mind the pain and sensitivity that might be involved. Not worth the chance to do at home. Might have been well intended, but bad advice.
The toothbrush itself does not breathtakingly eye-catching. It will not give a futuristic look to your bathroom cabinet. But, with 31,000 vibration movements per minute, it will do the job. In addition, you get 3 brushing modes: Clean, Soft, and Massage. That is, 2 more mode than you get for the similarly priced Sonicare 2 Series.

Studies linking oral health and general health, and efforts to expand access to oral hygiene services, will continue to drive the demand for preventive dental services. As a result, the demand for all dental services, including those performed by hygienists, will increase. In addition, demand for dental hygienists is expected to grow as state laws increasingly allow dental hygienists to work at the top of their training, and they effectively become more productive.
When I bought my first Phillips Sonicare electric toothbrush, I got the brush head that was hard to keep my lips closed around. It caused me to “spill” some down the handle with each use. Then I found Phillips had designed a new narrow cantilever style sonic head for this handle! My Dentist first recommended Sonicare with the remark that I needed “a little assistance at my age” (60) with cleaning my teeth. I am delighted with the performance and ease of use of this toothbrush and recommend it to everyone!
Run your toothbrush through the dishwasher. You wash other plastic utensils in the dishwasher, so washing your toothbrush should be safe. If you are worried about it melting, however, make sure to wash it on a lower heat setting.
Being able to reach 31,000 brush strokes per minute, the Sensonic Professional Plus has earned its place among the big boys. Namely, Philips and Oral-B. In fact, this Waterpik model is about 25% faster than Philips’ Sonicare FlexCare model.
Thank you for adding the link about the waterpik toothbrush, above. I bought the Waterpik about two years ago because there was a 50% discount at the store… I really like it, and it is quieter than the the Sonicare I use for travelling. I do not use the Waterpik for travelling, because you need to pack the whole unit (waterpik, toothbrush, and holding container) which takes up a lot of space. Additionally, once the battery goes, you need to replace the whole unit if you want the toothbrush back—you cannot buy one separately—or you buy an independent sonic toothbrush anyway (or break into the unit and solder in new batteries, like I did…) Also, you may have difficulty finding the brush heads; I live in Canada and must order them through a US post-box, even though the units are sold in Canada! Would I do this again, I would buy an independent sonic toothbrush that has all parts available locally, and a compact waterpik unit. That said, my dentist thinks my teeth & gums are the best they have ever been.
The Oral-B Pro 1000 has a limited two-year warranty that requires the buyer to retain the receipt and ship the product to an authorized service center if it needs fixing. This is typical for a product in this price range and category.

The best electric toothbrush is gentle on your teeth and gums, easy to maneuver, and actually improves your brushing technique. But highly advertised features, like different brushing modes, don’t necessarily lead to healthier teeth and gums. So we consulted dentists and dental research to identify the most effective features available — brushing timers and pressure sensors — and then gathered 16 toothbrushes to test ourselves. We ended up with four models that actually encourage better brushing habits for a healthy smile.
Streptococci, staphylococci and treponema denticola – these are just a few names of the different bacteria that exist in the average mouth every day.  It is estimated that most people’s mouths have literally millions of these organisms thriving just on the surfaces of the teeth. Having an abundance of bacteria is a contributor to tooth decay and gum disease, so keeping an environment less friendly to the harmful bacteria is one way to promote oral health.
When left undisturbed, there is a general trend where the types of bacteria that live in these colonies tend to shift from relatively less harmful to more harmful strains. This transformation progresses with each day, week and month.

A sonic toothbrush produces rapid movements of the brush head that cause vibrations in the hearing (audible) range. The models that fall within this category function at frequencies that range from 200 to 400 Hz, hence within the human hearing range of 20 to 20,000 Hz. This high in amplitude movement equates anywhere from 24,000 to 48,000 brush strokes per minute. In more general terms, this is the commercially accepted standard for measuring the speed of sonic toothbrushes.
The Philips Sonicare 2 Series is our top pick for its minimalist design and comfortable cleaning power. It comes with one brushing mode, a two-minute timer, and a quad-pacer to guide you as you brush with 40,000 strokes per minute. At $40, it doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles, but we appreciated the simple design, because nothing felt unnecessary. Competitors like the Brio came with additional brushing modes, but our testers reported that the experience wasn’t much different and our experts reinforced that an electric toothbrush with the right technique will do more than any brushing mode can.
I find this very interesting. I have never had an electric toothbrush last more than a couple of years before the battery dies out (slowly at first, then completely). I am actually on this discussion board because the battery on the Oral B, bought approx. 2-3 years ago, now needs an every-other-day charge.
You can follow all the essentials for dental hygiene , but you won’t have a pleasant breath unless you have a clean stomach. In fact many a times when we have a bad breath, the cause is an unclean stomach and not a lack of oral hygiene.
Gum disease – if your home care routine of brushing and flossing has slipped and you have skipped your regular dental cleanings, bacterial plaque and tartar can build up on your teeth. The plaque and tartar, if left untreated, may eventually cause irreparable damage to your jawbone and support structures, and could lead to tooth loss.

Tennessee Dental Hygienists’ Association Aside from national associations and organizations, many states have their own professional bodies to further the work of dental hygienists, as seen in this example from Tennessee.
Thanks. That’s a good tip but I’m talking about 3 to 4 years (the normal lifespan of the battery, not a faulty one) and and the mechanism is good for way more than that. That makes it unnecessarily disposable and therefore an environmental bad.
Nothing here about which models are chargeable via USB. It’s asinine that a ~5V device won’t charge/run off USB, forcing me to take a bulky, awkward adapter with me when I travel in addition to the n USB chargers I also need to take.
Both guava fruit and leaves are considered excellent antiplaque agents to help remove plaque accumulated on the teeth and gums. Plus, they have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that help reduce swelling and pain in the gums.
The humble sesame seed can be used as an active dental scrub. It will gently remove plaque and tartar, without damaging teeth. To achieve this, just pop a handful of sesame seeds into your mouth. Chew them up, but do not swallow them. Take an old toothbrush (dry) and brush your teeth while the seeds are still in your mouth. They will act as a scrub and delicately scour the surface of stained teeth.
This can be a very strange experience, because the dentist moves in close and uses a special scraping instrument to, literally, force the plaque from the teeth. They tend to focus particularly hard on areas where the tarter has begun to form calcified spots. These can be seen a little white or yellow marks on the outer surface of the enamel.
In doing this review, did you come across the Ultreo line of toothbrushes? I used to use them back in 2007 or so, but the company went out of business in 2009. I recently came across it again, so it looks like it may have been revived. May be worth looking into it.
The most significant thing about a powered toothbrush that might change over the course of its lifetime is the battery life; over the years, rechargeable batteries tend to lose capacity. In the case of a toothbrush, this might mean it becomes less powerful or not lasting as long while traveling.
Many Sonicare brushes feature Quadpacer or BrushPacer. These functions signal when you should advance to cleaning the next portion of your mouth. Not everyone values this type of indicator. We state below which models allow you to deactivate it.
All in all, this is a great toothbrush and it is very comparable to the Oral-B’s 7000 series. Philips claims that when fully charged, the battery will last 19 days. When we tested, the battery only lasted 14 days after being charged for 18 hours.
is it really? The 1000 is a rotating head. What sort of head is the Deep Sweep? It seems like it doesn’t rotate. Without seeing the underlying motor/link connection, it’s hard to tell if you can simply change the head and have them work. In the same way you can’t put an Oral-B rotating head on a Sonicare (which uses magnets to create vibrations) and have it work.

The first bacteria to colonize the pellicle after you’ve cleaned your teeth consists of gram positive, rounded aerobic bacteria, especially Streptococcus sanguinis. Within just minutes of initial attachment, the oxygen rich environment inside your mouth causes them to reproduce and grow into micro-colonies. Then, other bacteria join in, notably Streptococcus mutans, one of the main bacterial causes of dental caries. Streptococcus mutans produce an enzyme called glucosyltransferase, which converts sucrose (sugar) into exopolysaccharides. These exopolysaccharides are sticky, allowing more bacteria to adhere.
Dental hygienists can receive their necessary education with either a two-year associate degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. Each degree will yield the clinical training necessary to work in the field; however, a bachelor’s degree program will provide more in-depth studies and practice in the field.
Balloon angioplasty. This procedure helps open clogged arteries that have become partially or fully blocked by opening up the blockage with a device that pushes the plaque to the side walls of the arteries.
However, the rechargable battery in the brush has just failed (after 18 months of daily use) and is not replaceable. Not good. I liked this system better than a single plug-in brush, but now I’m not so sure.
In addition to clinical practice, there are career opportunities in education, research, sales and marketing, public health, administration and government. Some hygienists combine positions in different settings and career paths for professional variety. Working in education and clinical practice is an example.
It is easy to think that you need specialist brushes and they do exist.  However with a Sonicare electric toothbrush you can use any of the brush heads safely with braces, you do not need a special brush head.

Back in March 2010, Consumer Reports performed its own tests for plaque removal and concluded, “[T]he two priciest brushes removed 75 percent or more of plaque in our tests, on average.” In the years following those tests, two of the top models have been discontinued and replaced by similar ones, and one has been recalled; as of May 2016, CR no longer tests toothbrushes at all. GHI’s recommendations don’t say much and do not explain whether expensive features are really necessary.

Since before recorded history, a variety of oral hygiene measures have been used for teeth cleaning. This has been verified by various excavations done throughout the world, in which chew sticks, tree twigs, bird feathers, animal bones and porcupine quills have been found. In historic times, different forms of tooth cleaning tools have been used. Indian medicine (Ayurveda) has used the neem tree, or daatun, and its products to create teeth cleaning twigs and similar products; a person chews one end of the neem twig until it somewhat resembles the bristles of a toothbrush, and then uses it to brush the teeth. In the Muslim world, the miswak, or siwak, made from a twig or root, has antiseptic properties and has been widely used since the Islamic Golden Age. Rubbing baking soda or chalk against the teeth was also common; however, this can have negative side effects over time.[4]

My current sonicare died and I was very confused about the differences between the many, many models. Your excellent review helped me make up my mind as to a replacement. After perusing ebay (be careful about “used!”) I’ve ordered a replacement that was a good bit less expensive than the price quoted in your article. Thanks again!
There must be a factor beyond the brush stokes per minute though because I can assure everyone the 2 Series 31,000 brush strokes per minute is weak, weak compared to the 31,000 DiamondClean and Flexcare I have.
