“Excellent toothbrush!!!!!! I had one of these years ago. It died, then I went to an off-brand electric until it died. What a mistake. I purchased this brand again. What a difference in the way your teeth feel after brushing. Super clean. If you’re a heavy coffee drinker like I am, then you need this brush. Excellent!!!!! I don’t think it’s rough as some of the other reviewers claim. It’s an electric, and it works really well. Even if it dies after a year’s use, I’d buy another quickly. Your dentist will love you for it. And long-term, it may just save your teeth for old age. Cheaper to replace this brush than to have expensive dental work done, in my opinion. Take care of your teeth. You’ll need them a long time!! Would I purchase again??? You bet.”
Update: Although in this recipe we used vegetable glycerin and almost-all commercial toothpastes use glycerin, many natural dentists say this glycerin film on teeth can prevent the teeth from being able to remineralize and therefore, it might weaken your teeth.  Talk to a natural dentist to see if you should add glycerin to the mouthwash.
Purchase a UV toothbrush sanitizer.  These nifty gadgets work by combining steam with dry heat to sanitize your toothbrush.  However if you don’t want to shell out the money, studies show that soaking your toothbrush in Listerine works almost just as well.
If you want an electric toothbrush with every top-of-the-line feature, the Sonicare DiamondClean Smart Sonic Electric Toothbrush is an excellent choice. The toothbrush uses a simple two-button interface and includes some technique-improving features, like a pressure sensor that lets you know when you’re brushing too hard. In addition, it also has a compatible app that displays a 3D model of teeth to help track your brushing progress in real-time. It even displays an alert if your brushing strokes are too wide — a common technique flaw. The greatest downside is the $165 price tag. But if you’re looking for the most advanced toothbrush on the market, the DiamondClean is for you.
Warranty – Like all electronic gadgets, sonic toothbrushes are prone to failure due to manufacturing defects. One year full replacement warranty is the best we were able to find. For that reason, we set it as a standard for evaluation.
Along with technical know-how, dental hygienists should have excellent communication skills. “The client’s head is in their lap basically,” Swanson Jaecks says. “They should know how to read a client and relate to a client.” She also says good hand-eye coordination is a must, as are critical-thinking skills, since dental hygienists are on the front lines of assessing a client’s oral health.
I very rarely floss. I know I should, but I don’t do it often. After switching to this brush, dentists have not told me that it looks like I don’t floss anymore! I am NOT saying you can avoid flossing by using this brush, but I take it to mean that it does a way better job than my old manual toothbrush ever did
We could not find any independent studies comparing toothbrush models or brands, and all the ones tested for the fluid dynamics aspect are Sonicare brushes, which are all 31,000 movements-per-minute brushes. Other brands have toothbrushes that move faster, slower, and at roughly the same speed as this. Though the fluid dynamics effect exists, remember that it’s secondary to actual bristles scrubbing your teeth and gums.
We couldn’t give Greater Goods our top spot because it doesn’t really do a better job than the Sonicare 2 Series. But those who choose the Greater Goods Balance can expect a comfortable sonic toothbrush while giving back to those in need. For us, that’s worth a mention.

How long should one of these last – not the heads, but the handle/charger combo? The article says that the power might decrease over time as the rechargeable battery deteriorates, but I didn’t see any estimate of a general lifespan.
The other week we put together a buyer’s guide to Oral-B Electric Toothbrushes, this week we have a guide to Sonicare toothbrushes. We’re going to navigate through all the Sonicare toothbrushes and brush heads and talk about their features (highlighting the unique ones) and prices to see which have the most to offer.
Based on comments we’ve seen posted on our and retailer websites, it seems that there’s a general consensus that this brush is a step above the Sonicare 3 in terms of power and refinement, and therefore currently occupies a transition point in the Sonicare line up.

First off, the Sonic Pulse comes with 6 brush heads. That’s 5 more than what you get from the lower Philips models. You get, 2 interdental, 2 Slimsonic, and 2 professional brush heads. The issue we had, was with switching between brush heads. It is a bit awkward, and sometimes it feels like that head might break if you push it too hard.
An advice to the Flecare+ is to also buy the diamond clean brush heads for even a smoother cleaning feeling or even the adaptive clean brush heads (The adaptive clean heads I think are very good but those I have not tried yet). The Flexcare brush head is very good to remove tartar, but the diamond clean makes your teeth even more silky and glossy and maybe slightly more comfortable to brush with, but already the Flexcare brush head is extremely good for the silky feeling.
Our research showed that the majority of toothbrushes approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as ultrasonic, generate around 196,000,000 movements per minute. This means that they function at around 1.6 Mhz. Unlike oscillating or sonic models, this type uses powerful ultrasound waves to clean below the gum line.
Although there is insufficient clinical evidence to support that bacterial growth on toothbrushes will lead to specific adverse oral or systemic health effects, a common-sense approach is recommended for situations where patients may be at higher risk to infection or re-infection by various microbes. Examples may include situations where a patient or family member:
A full review of the patient’s medical history to identify the patient’s systemic health, as well as establishing a provisional diagnosis. The provisional diagnosis is generated following a comprehensive oral examination, data collection and radiographic interpretation.
I’ve used this for years as an alternative to commercial and toxic cleaners. While many of these commercials cleaners kill more germs than the natural ones, you are left with the after effects of their toxins. That is not something I want in my home.
As discussed above, it’s only realistic to assume that with increased cost comes a higher build quality. But considering the planned-obsolescence, disposable nature of this type of product (for example, battery failure generally equates with toothbrush death), we’ve decided that to us the line delineating what makes a reasonable purchase or not, lies below these models.
If your battery dies, contact the merchant or store if it’s under a certain period of time to invoke the warranty, but if it’s after an extended period of time, contact the maker (Oral-B, Philips). It’s not unheard of for them to send you a new brush for nothing if your battery dies.

Medical assistants complete administrative and clinical tasks in the offices of physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. Their duties vary with the location, specialty, and size of the practice.
The Sonicare does not “oscillate,” it merely vibrates. “Sonic Pulverization” feels great, but we were unable to find any scientific evidence that backs its efficacy. Every clinical study says that the Oral B is better when it comes to cleaning your mouth.
You can see the plaque on your teeth by using  Disclosing tablets, these tablets are made of a harmless vegetable dye. It’s hard to see a plaque with the naked eye but with these tablets its stains the teeth and highlight where a plaque is located.Look at the picture all the areas which have the red color has plaque. You can use disclosing tablets by chewing it then swish it around your mouth then rinse with some water. You will now see all the areas which have plaque and you can brush and floss away them away. Disclosing tablets are great to have in your home to teach children to brush their teeth correctly by showing them the calculus build up or the plaque their toothbrush missed. Check it out.
Today’s busy lifestyles typically cause large amounts of stress that can raise hormones to an unhealthy level in the body. Factors like smoking, drinking too much and overeating also contribute to poor arterial health. All of these things together can cause weight gain and blockages in the arteries.
2. Fit a brush head by pushing the metal tip of the brush motor at the top of the brush handle into the hole in the bottom of the brush head.  As the two are pushed together there will be a click, the head is now attached.
During the research process, we spoke with several experts on the subject of dentistry, including dental school faculty at leading research universities, a professional dentist, and a consumer advisor appointed by the American Dental Association (ADA), which confers a Seal of Acceptance on dental care products that seek the certification and meet a set of agreed-upon criteria.
Aside from the differences between brushing heads and handles, choosing between the Oral-B 1000 and Sonicare 2 Series is more about the character of the toothbrushes rather than anything else. At the end of the day, they’ll both offer a great clean. While the Sonicare is a better fit for most people, if you have sensitive teeth the Oral-B 1000 is definitely the way to go.
So which is better at cleaning teeth? The truth is: they’re both great. Our experts had differing opinions, and there’s evidence for the superior effectiveness of both oscillating and sonic brushes. What our dentists all agreed on is that more research is needed for a definitive answer: Most academic studies to date have simply focused on the different results between manual and electric toothbrushes. At the end of the day, both oscillating and sonic brushes will work well as long as they’re paired with proper brushing technique. Dr. Ben Lawlor of Maine Cosmetic Dentistry told us, “If you’re using an electric toothbrush that stimulates the gum, you’re good.” So rather than trying to pick a side based on inconclusive research, we focused on finding toothbrushes from both styles that had our must-have features and were celebrated for comfort.
Pursonic is a rather curious brand. Their S520 electric toothbrush is well accepted across all big retail stores in the United States. However, there is very little technical information present, and most of it is found on Amazon, rather than their own website.
If you don’t fancy rubbing vegetable glycerine on your teeth, you might prefer something a little simpler. You can rub orange peel directly onto your teeth and this will help to fight tartar building microorganisms on the enamel. You can also mash up the peel (though this may take some time) and apply it to the stained areas. Leave to rest and then rinse. You should find that this noticeably whitens the teeth.

If you already have an electric toothbrush that performs these services, there’s no need to consider upgrading. If you use a manual brush and don’t struggle to maintain good habits, there’s little reason to consider upgrading in that case, either.
It truly amazes me how gross my refrigerator can get in such a short amount of time. Drips all over the interior. Leftovers pushed back into the great unknown and moisture builds up on the shelves. It’s no wonder the kids stand in front of it with the door open, and proclaim, “WE DON’T HAVE […]
High school students interested in becoming dental hygienists should take courses in biology, chemistry, and math. Most dental hygiene programs also require applicants to complete prerequisites, which often include college-level courses. Specific requirements vary by school.
However, it has to be stated that as much sense as this seems to make, at this point in time it’s only conjecture. There has been no definitive study that has conclusively proven the long-term benefit of using a sonic toothbrush over the effective use of other types of brushes.
Before we dive into our reviews, it is important to make the distinction between sonic and ultrasonic. The two categories are often blended into one, mistakenly comparing them to one another. Even though both types essentially fall under the electric toothbrush category, their functionalities differ to a great extent. Here is some further clarification on that note.
Fiber helps prevent overeating by making you feel full and helps to block fats and cholesterol. High fiber foods include corn, avocado, beans, whole grains, soybeans, lentils, pears, oatmeal, artichoke, peas, apples and nuts.
If you get in and get through, you’ll be set though. The “real world” isn’t too difficult overall…In fact, one of the negatives of DH is that it can be rather repetitive. Learning how to present information to patients can allow you to express some creativity, being observant and applying knowledge of diseases and conditions can help you stay sharp…but….ultimately it is pretty similar day to day. Another note….as far as being an “easy” job, the skill set tends to remain the same every day, but you are doing physical labor possibly 8+ hours a day. That can definitely be difficult.

Photo: The head from a sonic toothbrush (seen in the lower part of the photo) is just like an ordinary manual toothbrush. Unlike a standard electric toothbrush, it doesn’t contain a rotating mechanism. The whole brush head vibrates—and this can make sonic toothbrushes a little more tricky to use at first.

Mind: We are what we perceive ourselves to be. A person with terrible teeth will always have a poor self image compared to others. Job opportunities will occur less frequently and a poor self image leads to other awful habits and to fewer chances to be more upward in life.
Finger toothbrushes: Every kid loves finger puppets — they enjoy anything they can stick on the end of their finger. It feels like a toy that they get to play with, but with finger toothbrushes, you’re tricking them into working during their playing session. Finger toothbrushes are extra soft and they work best for children with only a few teeth. If you let them wield these finger toothbrushes by themselves, you should make sure they don’t bite down too hard and hurt their fingers. You should be the one to begin brushing their teeth with this type of brush and then you can let them take over when they become comfortable.
– Travel; Because there aren’t any additional parts, taking this brush with me while I’m travelling is just as simple as carrying around a manual toothbrush. Just make sure your battery has juice before you take it with you. 🙂
There are a large selection of 24-hour dental emergencies that might send you frantically searching for a Newark emergency dentist. Some of these emergencies include falls or injuries from a car accident that might also damage other parts of your body. If you have a tooth knocked out in a car accident, you should definitely head for a hospital emergency room before you visit your Newark emergency dentist.
That’s $500 WITH Delta Dental insurance! I was showed an invoice listing $125 insurance and $125 patient fee per quadrant. This dentist also wants to schedule me for a cleaning every 4 months. I think she’s trying to pay off her student loans by overcharging. Date 8/16/2016
As Amazon’s #1 best seller in manual toothbrushes, the Colgate Extra Clean Toothbrush can provide a better clean with circular power bristles. The polished, end-rounded bristles help protect enamel and gums, while providing a superior clean. The thin, flexible, easy-to-grip handle allows you to get a good grip, while the full head allows you to easily clean every tooth. It also features a cleaning tip, which is specially designed to clean hard-to-reach areas, like the back teeth and between the teeth.
So in the end, it really depends on you. If you don’t floss (and I’m a realist — I know most people don’t), a sonic toothbrush will certainly serve you better than a regular toothbrush, and is probably worth looking into. But if you do brush diligently and floss regularly (and/or use a water flosser), a sonic toothbrush probably isn’t totally necessary — you are likely covering all the bases with your current oral hygiene routine (and congratulations on doing well in this area.)

According to information, the incident occurred while Vidya Prasanna was brushing her teeth in a playful mood and tripped on terrace floor of her house. When the parents failed to remove the broken piece of toothbrush with pliers, it got stuck. They rushed her to Parvathipuram Area Hospital where the duty doctor gave her sedative and removed it without surgery.
Recognizing the value of good oral health as an integral part of overall health, government sector and non-dental primary care professional organizations recently increased their engagement in, and support of, the integration of oral health and primary care at the institutional training and practice levels.34–36 Frontline primary care professionals, specifically nurses, physicians, and physician assistants, are members of the medical delivery system who are most likely to see vulnerable and underserved populations with limited or no access to dental services. This group of primary care professionals has the capacity to incorporate oral health information and the provision of preventive oral health services into their day-to-day practice. Concurrently, dental professionals can serve as key players in detecting chronic diseases such as diabetes, -hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia in dental practices. A recent study showed the potential savings to the health-care system from increased efforts to screen for chronic conditions in dental offices.37
It can be so hard to get children to develop great brushing habits, especially as they’re developing their fine motor skills. Luckily this brush can help. The brush head is specially designed to fit smaller mouths. The brush head is padded, which keeps young teeth from being bumped by hard plastic. Plus a vibrating alert lets kids know when it’s time to start brushing a new area of their mouth.

If you are searching for a power toothbrush for a child, you will have the same basic selections to choose from in terms of styles and designs. The bristles on kids’ toothbrushes are typically softer so that the gums are not hurt when brushing. In addition to the basic features of this type of toothbrush, you will also find many varieties with cartoon characters and bright colors on the brush handle. Another helpful feature of a power toothbrush for a child is that the brush head is smaller for easier cleaning of small teeth.

Most of the oral health crises occurring in the United States right now are taking place in low-income urban areas that have been fluoridated for decades. It is unclear, therefore, how fluoridation can be expected to prevent oral health crises in newly fluoridated areas when it has failed to prevent such crises in areas that have been fluoridated for 30 to 60 years.

As kids grow, plan on routine dental checkups anywhere from once every 3 months to once a year, depending on your dentist’s recommendations. Keeping sugary foods in check, encouraging regular brushing and flossing, and working with your dentist will lead good dental health.

To understand how the mouth can affect the body, it helps to understand what can go wrong in the first place. Bacteria that builds up on teeth make gums prone to infection. The immune system moves in to attack the infection and the gums become inflamed. The inflammation continues unless the infection is brought under control.
If your dentist hasn’t suggested that you get an electric toothbrush, you definitely have someone in your life who has raved about how great they are. Electric toothbrush converts, like myself, do that–not to be annoying but simply because the difference is so drastic and we want everyone to have a mouth that feels so clean. Your excited friends mean well, and if it’s your Mom who has suggested it, you should probably pick one up because they’re not going to let it go.

According to Victora et al. (1997) [43], this approach includes a first model with the more distal level variables. At this level, the co-variables that are associated with the outcome of the level p < 0.20 can be included at the next level, and so forth, until reaching the more proximal co-variable level. In the present study’s case, the order of insertion of the variables in the model included: predisposing factors, enabling factors, self-reported level of disease, level of disease evaluated by the healthcare professional, and the characterization of the healthcare service (Figure 1). Model 1 included ‘Education level (in years)’, ‘Race/Color’, ‘Number of people in the household’ – predisposing factors. Their measures of effect were assessed in this first model. Those variables that reached p value <0.20 were kept in model 2. In model 2, ‘Family income (in dollars)’ and ‘Size of town (in number of inhabitants)’ – enabling factors were included together with those kept in model 1. Those variables that reached p value <0.20 were kept in the model 3. In model 3, ‘self-assessment of oral health’, ‘Self-reported need for dental treatment’, ‘Complaint of a toothache’, ‘Need for a total prosthesis’ - Self-reported needs were included together with those variables kept in model 2. Those variables that reached p value <0.20 were kept in the model 4. In Model 4, ‘Need for a prosthesis’ and ‘Total of teeth needing treatment’ - Needs diagnosed by the healthcare professional were included together with those kept in model 3. Those variables that reached p value <0.20 were kept in the model 5. In model 5, ‘Time elapsed since last dentist visit’ - Characteristics of use of healthcare services were included together with those kept in model 4. According to recommendations formulated by Hosmer & Lemeshow (2005) [45], only variables with a p < 0.05 were maintained in the final model, since the maintenance of other co-variables in the final model would change the estimates. Good oral and dental healthcare routine ensure high quality life for us. But regular and improper oral and dental healthcare is one of the leading causes of many life threatening issues being faced by our generation. I don’t see any indication in the discussion as to the multi-voltage capabilities of the chargers associated with the rated items. I think that that is a vital consideration for any electronic drive that you might travel with. I am now on my 2nd electric toothbrush (a Sonicare R910 that I have had several years). The charger can handle the 220-240 voyage range common in most of the world. It replaced an older Sonicare base model (battery died) whose charger could only handle US voltages, and, thus, was useless for foreign travel of more than a few days.
“I think that one of the things that people look for with Bluetooth connection—or anything that connects to their phone—is confirmation that what they’re doing is enough, or good, or better than what they were doing before,” Dr. Maria Lopez-Howell, a dentist and ADA spokesperson told us. “And I think that, if this gives the patient information that they’re brushing enough time, [and] if this is encouraging a patient to brush—this is something that the American Dental Association is wanting.”
You brush your teeth twice a day and floss regularly, but when you get to the dentist, you find out that your teeth still require excessive scraping and cleaning to remove tartar. If you’re tired of spending so much time in the dental chair for cleanings, Sonicare can help you improve the effectiveness of your at-home oral hygiene routine to benefit the health of your teeth and gums. By producing thousands of sonic vibrations per second, Sonicare toothbrush heads can remove more plaque than what most people can lift away with a manual brush. Because plaque is the substance that hardens into tartar, a Sonicare brush can help you enjoy quicker trips to the dentist as well as a cleaner smile and healthier gums. The Sonicare collection is recommended by dentists all over the country and has been helping people improve their oral health since 1992. You can find all of the most popular brush heads for Sonicare power toothbrushes in the brush head collection at Walgreens.
We’d take that as evidence that consumers generally didn’t find it to be an especially important feature or good value. We had always stated on our pages that we saw no purpose for it. We based our opinion on that of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) whose website states that toothbrush sterilization holds little benefit.
That being said, I’m replacing it, and I may be switching to a Sonicare with some of those unnecessary features simply because I have certain issues that weren’t addressed. We have really hard water where I live. My brush is permanently discolored. I can’t remove the buildup from parts of it or the charging base. This stuff can’t be good for my teeth. I don’t want to buy a container for a five-year-old toothbrush that’s already caked with calcium and limescale.
The typical degree required is an associate degree in dental hygiene. You may consider completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree program if you are interested in advancing your career. Programs will focus on teaching you to use dental software, tools, and machines, and courses may include oral pathology, dental materials, radiology, infection control, pain management, periodontics, community dental health, and pharmacology. You’ll need to develop solid interpersonal skills; dental hygienists work with patients on a daily basis and often have to explain dental procedures. You must also be compassionate, since patients may be in severe pain or be fearful of dental procedures.
Unfortunately, our website doesn’t have the resources of a big organization (like Consumer Reports for example) who might run dozens of each model for weeks on end to evaluate reliability. Or scientifically measure how the brushing action of one compares to another. So, actually quantifying model differences isn’t really something we can do.
Acids contained in fruit juice, vinegar and soft drinks lower the pH level of the oral cavity which causes the enamel to demineralize. Drinking drinks such as orange juice or cola throughout the day raises the risk of dental cavities tremendously.
It’s important to note that the DiamondClean is a sonic model, which can tickle or be uncomfortable for sensitive teeth. If you have sensitive teeth, go for the Oral-B 8000 would be our recommendation, even though we didn’t love its usability as much as the DiamondClean. (We actually prefer the rubber grip of the Oral-B 8000 over the smooth handle of the DiamondClean.) But the DiamondClean is definitely easier to hold and maneuver. In fact, our tester who found the DiamondClean ticklish reported that “actually for maneuverability the narrow head of the DiamondClean came in quite handy. It was easier to get around the back teeth than the bigger Oral-B head.”
In addition to regular dental hygiene, you can use some natural remedies to remove plaque and tartar. Remember, once the tartar has mineralized on your teeth, it is extremely difficult to remove. However, if you regularly remove plaque, it can help prevent permanent tooth decay.
Employment of dental hygienists is projected to grow 20 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for dental services will increase as the population ages and as research continues to link oral health to overall health.
“Of course something this size isn’t gonna be as powerful as a full-size Sonicare or Oral-B electric toothbrush, but this is awesome and much better than a nonelectric travel toothbrush. The design is great — love that you can’t accidentally turn it on in your purse. Also love that it came with a triple-A battery and an extra brush head. Would buy again and would highly recommend!”
Why: The DiamondClean Smart has some handy sidekicks—its connected app and smart sensor suite. It keeps track of where you brush, where you miss, and where you need to pay more attention. It removes up to 100% more stains in 3 days,** removes up to 10x more plaque* and leaves gums up to 7x healthier in 2 weeks*.
A career as a dental hygienist offers a wide range of challenges. In the dental office, the dentist and the dental hygienist work together to meet the oral health needs of patients. Since each state has its own specific regulations regarding their responsibilities, the range of services performed by hygienists varies from state to state. Some of the services provided by dental hygienists may include:
Lastly, we read a lot of articles from the American Dental Association and other independent oral health organizations, such as the Cochrane Collaboration. This helped us trim down our initial list of 107 electric toothbrushes and 38 manufacturers, down to 52 models from 16 different brands. Out of that number, we were able to pick 7.
The best electric toothbrush is easy to use, comes with extra bristle heads, improves your brushing technique, and is somewhat inexpensive. But, finding a model that is gentle on the teeth and gums, while eliminating plaque and food debris, is no easy task.
Is there a relationship between “sensitive” mode on some brushes and low or medium “intensity” on Series 3. Fewer strokes/min? Also, please confirm that only “clean” mode, i.e. full bore 31,000 strokes /min, accomplishes the “fluid dynamic” cleaning – or does sensitive &/or med/low intensity just have less?? My concern centers around abrasive notching of the root surface. Does any particular brush head facilitate fluid dynamic cleaning? Intercare? Thanks
W3 Premium White (introduced with DiamondClean Smart) – Helps whiten teeth in just 3 days by removing plaque and surface stains. 4 times more surface contact. Automatically selects optimal cleaning mode for the best results. (Compatible brush required)
I am not a dentist, but I do have a powerful story about baking soda. I was visiting my next-door neighbor once, who was in her 80s and she was telling me this story about a time she was in the hospital to have surgery and the nurse said, “Mrs. Boswell, I need you to give me your teeth.” and she replied, “Well, I’d love to except their mine.” And the nurse said, “Now, Mrs. Boswell, you don’t need to be embarrassed. All people your age have false teeth.” My friend replied, “Well, you can try if you like.” The nurse then looked in her mouth and said, “For goodness sakes, those are your teeth!” to which Toggy replied, “I tried to tell you.” Afterwards, she told me that all she used to brush her teeth with her whole life was baking soda. This made more of an impression on me than any other advice could have. And from that day on, I began brushing my teeth with baking soda, and I love it.
It’s up to us to move the saliva around our mouths to remineralize all our teeth rather than give the microbes hanging around our lower teeth such easy pickings for the minerals to build their plaque condos. We made a video tutorial called ‘Mouth Probiotics’ that details how to use saliva to optimize our oral health.
Featuring a rubber moulding on the back of the brush head for safer, more pleasant cleaning. Both will help remove more plaque than a manual toothbrush, but the larger brush head used by children aged 7+ can remove as much as 7 times more.
First, I asked two friends who are dentists what they prefer. One friend strongly recommended the Sonicare FlexCare+, stating that the top of the line models are not any better. The other provided a similar recommendation to my dentist – either one will be a huge improvement over a manual brush. So slight tilt to the Sonicare at this point. Very slight because not much detail was provided as to why the Sonicare was better. Just a “trust me, get this” endorsement.
This and other Philips models come with a one of a kind charging glass. All you have to do is drop your DiamondClean toothbrush into the glass to begin charging. In addition, you can still use the glass to rinse your mouth once you are done brushing.
Peripheral artery disease. If plaque builds up in the blood vessels that carry blood to your legs, it can reduce the amount of oxygen delivered. The reduced blood flow can cause you to experience pain, numbness, or serious infection in your legs and feet.
Another factor which affects the risk of developing cavities is the stickiness of foods. Some foods or sweets may stick to the teeth and so reduce the pH in the mouth for an extended time, particularly if they are sugary. It is important that teeth be cleaned at least twice a day, preferably with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, to remove any food sticking to the teeth. Regular brushing and the use of dental floss also removes the dental plaque coating the tooth surface.
Outdated models – We avoided these not because they are out of fashion, but because they are mostly out of support. It is quite hard to find replacement parts and actual local support for models that the brands no longer manufacture.
Philips Sonicare is the number one brand used and recommended by U.S. dental professionals. Recognized as a leader in oral health care since 1992, Philips Sonicare products are backed by more than 140 publications representing clinical and laboratory studies conducted at more than 40 universities and research institutes worldwide.

Brushing timers – Smartimer / KidTimer – All Sonicare models come with some type of brushing timer, which usually runs on the order of two minutes or longer. Some people like having a timer because it helps them achieve a higher level of brushing discipline. Others find them annoying. (This feature typically cannot be deactivated.)

Sonic toothbrushes usually operate at around 260Hz or 260 times per second. Each vibration creates 2 brush strokes per second. So, in a minute, there are about 31,000 brush strokes, which is 10 times faster than regular electric toothbrushes. Some Philips models have even tested at speeds exceeding 62,000 brush strokes per minute.
Also, some of the dental hygeneists here offering advice are clearly close-minded and ignorant and are just regurgitating what their text-books told them…”Indoctrinate yourself with this text book, don’t use any critical thinking and don’t question, pass these tests, now we’ll give you a certification paper and you’ll be payed well and have a intellectual sounding title for your job/career”. WAKE UP! These are the same sort of mindless zombies who probably think big-agro and big-pharma companies (eg. Monsanto, Merck, Pfizer) are moral companies with the health of others as their interest which couldn’t be further from the truth (their interests are profits, power, and poison).
I sold my DiamondClean and now using two Essence+. While material of DiamondClean (ceramic paint) is nice, as long as it gives same cleaning I could care less. I also love travelling with inexpensive full powered electric toothbrush than DiamondClean.
Third party or aftermarket alternatives can be purchased. It is advised to only use Philips Sonicare brush heads with the brush handles as performance and wear on the brush using other brush heads cannot be guaranteed.
Waterpik Sonic Toothbrush Sensonic Professional Plus (SR-3000) is from a newer brand and has a bulky base with grippy rubber panels, a single button, and smaller range of heads than Oral-B or Philips. This brush’s higher price gets you one extra cleaning mode, two extra battery level indicator lights, and a travel case. It claims to give better results by moving the brush head faster than Sonicare models do, but according to all the research we could find, faster doesn’t mean better.
Tracy, I was thinking the same thing. Scalers are not for the patient to use at home to remove tartar. You can break a tooth, especially one of the thinner anteriors. Even a chipped corner can change a person’s appearance when it’s a front tooth. Never mind the pain and sensitivity that might be involved. Not worth the chance to do at home. Might have been well intended, but bad advice.
Do not soak your toothbrush in mouthwash or a disinfecting solution. According to the American Dental Association, there is no clinical evidence that soaking your toothbrush in antibacterial mouthwash has any effect on your oral health.[13]

EasyStart – This is a feature introduced by Philips and their Sonicare series. It basically helps new sonic toothbrush users to get used to the high-frequency vibrations by slowly increasing them over time. This is great if you are not used to 31,000 brush strokes per minute. Which you will not be used to if you have been using a manual toothbrush till now.
We’d also suggest that 6 months out or so, even those people who originally enjoyed the novelty (yes, just novelty) of having more than one brushing mode to choose from have long since forgotten that these options exist, and likely even how to activate them.
These state-licensed dental health professionals may be allowed different responsibilities and duties depending on the state in which they practice. However, basic services performed by dental hygienists, according to the American Dental Association (ADA), include:
The Philips Sonicare 2 Series is one of the least expensive brushes in Sonicare’s line, but still has a two-minute timer, rechargeable battery, and makes less noise than our Oral-B pick. This pick has a smaller range of brush textures and shapes, but they are all soft and serviceable.

Some salivary components are crucial for plaques ecosystem, such as salivary alpha-amylase which plays a role in binding and adhesion.[15] Proline-rich rich proteins (PRP) and statherins are also involved in the formation of plaque.[16]
It’s got many positive reviews and a high rating of 4.4. Users have commented on its many benefits. Among them, many users have seen positive changes in the color of their teeth. In just one week you can see visible changes.
A 2008 study published in The Journal of Clinical Dentistry analyzed five clinical studies and concluded that baking soda paste or powder can more efficiently remove plaque than non-baking soda products.

I have had dental hygienists tell me that the Sonicare brushes seem to eliminate bacteria that they can’t even get close to actually physically touching. This seems to be exactly the type of result an energetic sonic wave action could plausibly result in; that a lower-frequency physical cleaning action might not.
Our testing methodology has also changed a little bit, as we now give less preference to smartphone features and more weight to the oscillating and rotatory performance of the toothbrush. Having said that, the Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 remains our top choice for people who are looking to get the most feature-packed model.
In our quest to finding the top sonic toothbrush models, we came across Sterline – an up and coming dental hygiene brand. It is not easy to spot, because it does not have the same market shares as Philips or Oral-B, but it is definitely out there.
I’d encourage you to check out the video of all the toothbrushes vibrating, they’re all labeled so you can hear what the 2 Series sounds like compared to everything else. In my experience, it was significantly quieter than any of the Oral Bs and hardly different from the rest of the Sonicares. And yes, the 2 Series’ battery is Ni Cd, which means it must be recycled in a particular way, as with Li-ion batteries. Glad you liked the guide, though!
The toothbrush itself does not breathtakingly eye-catching. It will not give a futuristic look to your bathroom cabinet. But, with 31,000 vibration movements per minute, it will do the job. In addition, you get 3 brushing modes: Clean, Soft, and Massage. That is, 2 more mode than you get for the similarly priced Sonicare 2 Series.
The toothbrush has a unique way of charging. It comes with a glass and a multi-voltage base. When you place the glass on the base, you can just throw your brush inside the glass and it will start charging using conduction technology.
I am very pleased with Philips Sonicare UV Sanitizer. I have used a Germ Terminator for several years but the sanitizer is much easier to use and takes up less space. I feel that the germs usually on a toothbrush can extend the time of illness but when you sanitize your toothbrush every time you use it, you are not re-infecting yourself. I would recommend it.

DiamondClean technology, which is available on some Philips Sonicare models, utilizes a diamond-shaped brush and comes preset with five different settings, including clean, white, polish, sensitive, and gum care. These brushes also include a travel case that can double as a charger for ultimate convenience when you are on the go.

Vibrating – this technique creates a rapid buzz against the teeth. Interestingly enough, some Philips toothbrushes offer this feature in addition to their oscillating attribute. The two movements can be triggered to perform simultaneously and destroy plaque that even Chuck Norris could not get to.

One thing is clear: the body and mouth are not separate. “Your body can affect your mouth and likewise, your mouth can affect your body,” says McClain. “Taking good care of your teeth and gums can really help you live well longer.” This means brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and going for regular dental cleanings and check-ups.
Teeth cleanings remove the buildup of plaque and tartar. This buildup is for the most part natural — kind of like how a boat picks up barnacles just by being in the ocean. But too much buildup leads to gum disease.
The Pro 1000 was also quite comfortable to use. Oral-B models use rotation and pulsation, so its brushes don’t buzz as intensely when the brush’s head touches your other teeth. All Sonicares vibrate at the same (high) frequency and produce a more jarring sensation when the back of the brush collides with other teeth.
The little timer that comes with the 7000 is, ironically, more useful than the high-tech phone app that the 9000 (above) employs. Not only does it tell you when you’ve done each quadrant of your mouth, it also smiles and winks at you when you brush for the full two minutes that dentists recommend.
Orthodontic therapy. Before the misaligned teeth start showing symptoms of gum disease, you can start proactive treatment. With slow and precise orthodontic care, you can have your teeth properly aligned within 12-24 months. After this orthodontic treatment, it will be easier to keep the teeth clean, which will help to avoid developing gum disease, recession, or cavities.
Gum disease is another consequence of poor dental hygiene. When plaque builds up along and under the gum line, infections can occur that harm the gums and the bone that hold the teeth in place. The most severe form of gum disease is known as periodontal disease. In this case, infection has become so severe that bone deterioration can occur, leading to tooth loss.
If any toothbrush can give you the same clean if you’re brushing properly, why not just buy a cheap manual one? There are many reasons why people prefer electrics like quip (a more enjoyable clean, fresher feeling, less wasteful product) but the most important are health ones. Unfortunately, most people brush badly, brushing too hard for too short a time, not changing brush heads or visiting the dentist on time, and up to 50% not even brushing twice a day (!), so dentists recommend electric brushes as they are a proven way to help people brush softer and for longer. But even if you believe you are brushing the right way, for long enough, quip will still enhance your routine through our subscription service that ensure you are changing your brush head every 3 months, are getting the latest oral health tops every month and reminded and rewarded for visiting the dentist on time.
Gum recession is one of the common dental problems, more common among adults over the age of 40. The condition usually occurs gradually and a person might not at once notice that he has receding gums. The following are some of the symptoms of receding gums, so you can detect the condition in its early stage and start treating it at once.
This product started out good, but within 1-2 weeks it no longer held the charge (I placed it on the charger/base after every use). Now exactly 30 days later it’s no longer working…..HORRIBLE PRODUCT. It was purchased from shopnbc not amazon. You get a cheap product for a cheap price
Edit 2018/01/19 : They replaced one of the units which I have been using now for several months without trouble. The tooth brush works very well. My wife has asked me to order her another one. We’ll see.. Still an amazing product. White, smooth, clean teeth…
If you are like most people, you are reminded each morning of the millions of bacteria growing in our mouths.  After all, that’s one of the reasons we brush our teeth every morning.  But where do those germs go?  Yes, some of them go down the drain, but far too many of them remain on our toothbrushes.
Everybody likes to have fresh breath and white teeth. Unfortunately, because of the cheap manual toothbrushes that some of us use, most have yellow teeth and appalling breath. To solve these problems, CUH Sonic is one of the best electric toothbrushes to use. This is a powerful electrical device. It handles both light and heavy-duty brushing jobs effectively. It is also one of the safest products on our list.

The reason it is so critical to brush after eating is to remove the leftover food particles, stuck on sugar, and plaque that builds up in between the teeth after eating. Since we have bacteria in our mouth that loves to feed on sugar, anytime after we eat is a smorgasbord for the bacteria that live in our mouth. The acid they produce can break down our tooth enamel and cause us to develop cavities and a trip to the dentist. Nobody wants that!
With any manual toothbrush, there’re places in between the teeth that are difficult to reach. That can leave plaque and lead to cavities. However, DiamondClean provides double cleaning power to that of a manual toothbrush. This results in more plaque removal in the hardest to reach areas.
There are two variations of the Oral-B 7000 and the only difference between the two is color. Out of the two we recommend the white model. Toothpaste and watermarks were much more visible on the black model.

Keep it covered on the road, but not at home. When you travel, put your toothbrush in a travel toothbrush holder-don’t let it roll around uncovered in your suitcase or toiletry bag where it can pick up dust, dirt, and bacteria. But don’t store a toothbrush in a toothbrush holder at home-the chronically moist environment can promote bacteria growth. If you must use a covered toothbrush holder frequently, look for one with small holes to let air in. When at home, store your toothbrush upright in a cup or a toothbrush holder that allows it to air dry and has several openings to keep multiple toothbrushes separate.
Oral-B® Electric Toothbrushes deliver up to 48,800 movements per minute, while a regular manual toothbrush can only deliver 300 to 600 movements per minute. The Oral-B Pro 1000 removes 100% more plaque than a manual toothbrush.Oscillating/Rotating/Pulsating Technology
Soft bristles: Most toothbrush bristles aren’t soft enough, so I’m always replacing the toothbrush head that the brush comes with for softer bristles. The nice thing about the 7000 is that it comes with a soft bristle head already.

Healthy gums and avoid gingivitis and gum bleeding. Using an electric toothbrush you don’t need to brush too hard because the brush will do all the work. This way you avoid damaging your gums. Some electric toothbrushes also have a seonsor alert which stops the toothbrush power when you brush too hard. There are also some models with cleaning modes and one of those modes is Massage mode which allows you to massage your gums and improve their health.

Note: We did bring in one toothbrush without a rechargeable battery, the Quip (which does send replacement batteries). One of two top-rated subscription brushes (the other was the Goby) we brought in to see how these services, which send replacement heads every 3 months, measured up against traditional models. (Spoiler alert: We weren’t impressed).
As examples, people seem to complain that this brush’s mechanism is noisy and less refined than the higher-end models. And some commenters on this page have complain that they consider this brush under powered (they don’t get the same “clean” as with more expensive Sonicares).
Floss between your teeth. Flossing is an essential component of effective oral hygiene, though unfortunately it is often neglected. Flossing removes bacteria and food particles from between the teeth, helping to prevent the formation of plaque. It should be done once a day, at bedtime, before brushing your teeth. Floss between teeth using a gentle sawing motion, and lifting the floss along the sides of the teeth. Avoid “snapping” the floss into place, as this can irritate the delicate gum tissue.
The main draw of an electric toothbrush for kids in a digital age is the ability to use a toothbrush with an app (read: game). The Sonicare app is our favorite because it actually pairs with the toothbrush. In contrast, the Oral-B app is simply a timer meaning kids can log brushing sessions even if they don’t have a toothbrush in hand. In addition, a parental pin code on the Sonicare allows you to access the parent’s dashboard where you can track the progress of your kids’ brushing and even set up additional rewards. For example, if they brush 10 days in a row, you can set a personalized reward. Our tester’s parent reported “the Oral-B was more engaging for her than the Sonicare — she looked at the app a lot more.” This may be because the Oral-B uses popular Disney characters and plays songs when it’s time to switch from the top teeth to the bottom.
I have been using the Deep Sweep for about 6 months now and while I agree it’s better than the Sonicare I previously had, I’m surprised you don’t mention how filthy it gets. Maybe I need to work on my brushing etiquette but I find the handle gets super gunky and on top of that, is hard to rinse because of the crevices.
Do not let toothbrushes come into contact with one another. If you are storing multiple toothbrushes in one container, make sure they do not touch, as this will allow for the transfer of bacteria and bodily fluids from one brush to another.[8]
I know you mean well however, I don’t think you are able to wrap your head around the fact that in some rural areas in the US there are no dental schools or affordable dental care available. Full stop. Considering the time and money required to actually visit a dentist when you are working a minimum or low wage job in areas with limited or no public transportation options, dental cleaning one or two times a year are not feasible. Don’t criticize people for seeking other options.
However, after spending $10 on a double edge safety razor instead of replacing my dead electric shaver, I decided to splurge and bought an Emmi-Dent Pro toothbrush. It actually is ultrasonic – you don’t brush! It’s by far the best electric toothbrush we’ve ever owned.

As testament of this, over the years we noticed that every Sonicare manual we’ve seen clearly states something similar to: “When the Sonicare is used in clinical studies, the default 2-minute Clean mode must be selected.”

Dental plaque, also known as dental biofilm, is a sticky, yellow film consisting of a wide range of bacteria which attaches to the tooth surfaces and can be visible around the gum line. It starts to reappear after the tooth surface has been cleaned, which is why regular brushing is encouraged.[1] A high-sugar diet encourages the formation of plaque. Sugar (fermentable carbohydrates), is converted into acid by the plaque. The acid then causes the breakdown of the adjacent tooth, eventually leading to tooth decay.[11]
The FlexCare Platinum comes equipped with 3 brushing modes: Clean, White and Gum Care. Each cleaning mode allows the user to moderate the intensity of the brush using 3 additional levels. This further helps new users to ease into this powerful sonic toothbrush.

Dental hygienists have a specific role to play in dentist’s offices, and they will essentially be repeating the same tasks in the same environment every day. While your work may vary slightly between patients, you’ll mostly be cleaning teeth all day.
We absolutely feel that almost all users should just use Clean mode (at the highest intensity setting). But for people who can’t tolerate that much brushing activity (like elderly or debilitated person’s), this brush gives the user additional options that the 2 Series doesn’t.
The Foreo Issa is a silicone brush with a sleek and unusual look, but owner reviews on the Sephora site suggest that the all-silicone brush tips lack the ability to clean as thoroughly as plastic bristles. A second model that integrates bristles, the Issa Hybrid, is also available, but per our reasoning above, we don’t need to test this model to know that there is nothing aside from the unusual look to justify its $200 price tag.
The best electric toothbrush is gentle on your teeth and gums, easy to maneuver, and actually improves your brushing technique. But highly advertised features, like different brushing modes, don’t necessarily lead to healthier teeth and gums. So we consulted dentists and dental research to identify the most effective features available — brushing timers and pressure sensors — and then gathered 16 toothbrushes to test ourselves. We ended up with four models that actually encourage better brushing habits for a healthy smile.
In addition, I tried the generic Oral-B replacement brushes a few years ago and they were TERRIBLE. At least one fell apart as I was using it, and my cheek got caught in the little hole in the back of another. Not sure if the replacements have gotten better since then, but it’s made me reluctant to try.

I tried one of these. Yes, the frequency is traded against amplitude but the movement is so small that when the tip of a bristle is pressed against a tooth it stops moving almost entirely while the shaft of the bristle continues to move.
All of these models come with superfluous brushing modes. Some offer convenient but redundant charging options. If you want the option of using a brushing app, that’s available with some of them. One model even comes with an (unneeded, see below) UV brush head sanitizer.
Ease of using the brush: We also asked our testers to rate how easy the toothbrushes were to maneuver. We wanted toothbrushes that would help us maintain proper technique — holding the brush at a 45 degree angle to the gums with short tooth-wide strokes. Some, like the Jim Ellis, made our tester’s hand tired and came with a circular handle that was “difficult to maneuver or twist around.” (Note: we were curious about this comment, so we ran some additional tests on handle comfort and found that slightly more square handles — pretty standard for most models — are actually much easier to handle). Our testers reported that others, like the Fairywell, were “lighter and a bit less rounded so it was easier to maneuver around and hold for the duration of cleaning.”

Many children and adults still go without simple measures that have been proven effective in preventing oral diseases and reducing dental care costs. For example, fluoride prevents tooth decay, and the most cost-effective way to deliver the benefits of fluoride to all residents of a community is through water fluoridation; that is, adjusting the fluoride in the public water supply to the appropriate level for decay prevention. Dental sealants, plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where most decay occurs, are another safe, effective way to prevent cavities. However, only about one-third of children aged 6–19 years have sealants. Although children from lower income families are almost twice as likely to have decay as those from higher income families, they are only half as likely to have sealants.
Back in March 2010, Consumer Reports performed its own tests for plaque removal and concluded, “[T]he two priciest brushes removed 75 percent or more of plaque in our tests, on average.” In the years following those tests, two of the top models have been discontinued and replaced by similar ones, and one has been recalled; as of May 2016, CR no longer tests toothbrushes at all. GHI’s recommendations don’t say much and do not explain whether expensive features are really necessary.
When you consider the long-term use of a sonic toothbrush over years and decades, it only makes sense that the additional non-contact cleaning effect it creates may be significant (as compared to conventional electric or manual toothbrushes which don’t provide this benefit).
In 1906 one of his followers Alferd C. Fones took a great interest into Smith’s theories and began to train his cousin, Irene Newman, to act as an apprentice, scaling and polishing teeth as well as giving instructions on how to keep their mouths clean with daily home care practices. She was then to become the first recognized dental hygienist.[9]
The fluid forces that were generated by the sonic toothbrush were able to produce the following cleaning effects in the listed time frames. 58% plaque reduction at 5 seconds, 63% plaque reduction at 10 seconds, 76% plaque reduction at 15 seconds.
Dental hygienists provide clinical services in a variety of settings such as private dental practice, community health settings, nursing homes, hospitals, prisons, schools, faculty practice clinics, state and federal government facilities and Indian reservations.
My current sonicare died and I was very confused about the differences between the many, many models. Your excellent review helped me make up my mind as to a replacement. After perusing ebay (be careful about “used!”) I’ve ordered a replacement that was a good bit less expensive than the price quoted in your article. Thanks again!

That doesn’t necessarily mean that all of the bargain models aren’t good brushes or can’t be effective when used. In fact, some of them represent the best Sonicares of yesteryear (the Essence and its updated version the Essence+ models).
When fully charged, the Lithium ION batted lasted a whole 5 weeks. This is more than any other battery we have tested. Do keep in mind, however, that Brio’s battery is much larger (900 mah) than other competing electric toothbrushes. This does make the toothbrush a bit heavy, but it also means that the battery will last for years to come.
In 2009, Fiala co-authored a paper that showed how curcuminoids, substances found in the spice turmeric, enhanced the surface binding of amyloid beta to macrophages and that vitamin D strongly stimulated the uptake and absorption of amyloid beta in macrophages.
Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your teeth and gums. Healthy teeth not only enable you to look and feel good, they make it possible to eat and speak properly. Good oral health is important to your overall well-being.
Foods to Eat: Eat foods that are high in fiber to help reduce the absorption of cholesterol from the intestines. Include plenty of low-fat foods, low-sodium foods such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains in your diet.
Dr. Katia Friedman, dentist and owner of Friedman Dental Group, explained that, “When we brush by hand, we average about 300 strokes per minute, which isn’t bad. But electric toothbrushes can average up to 31,000 to 40,000 strokes per minute. One of the main benefits of the vibrations or oscillations is that it cleans your teeth more thoroughly — it eliminates plaque and bacteria better than a manual toothbrush due to the increased number of strokes that it provides.”
This piece of German technology is engineered by Braun and claims to remove 300% more plaque from along the gum line when compared to a manual toothbrush. We cannot verify this claim, nor deny it. However, we can assert that the 7000 series comes equipped with a variety of options that will help you develop a better brushing technique. For instance, sensitivity sensors will stop you from brushing too hard, while the 6 independent functions will help you clean your teeth more efficiently.
There is no dark magic and wizardly spells surrounding these vibrating and rotating toothbrushes. They are rather simple devices powered by a small motor that makes motions at sonic speed. The purpose of these electric gadgets is to help clean teeth by using rapid and automatic bristle motions.
While the toothbrush performed very well in terms of brushing, we did not see much improvement in regards to whitening. According to Philips, 2 weeks of brushing twice a day should have resulted in teeth being whitened by 2 shades. Unfortunately, our test cannot confirm these claims.
Higher-priced Oral-B models don’t have much more to offer than our pick. Investing $50 into the Pro 1000 gets you access to the same set of brush heads as buying the $150 Oral-B Black 7000 model (with the exception of a couple of less widely available models).

In addition to clinical practice, there are career opportunities in education, research, sales and marketing, public health, administration and government. Some hygienists combine positions in different settings and career paths for professional variety. Working in education and clinical practice is an example.
A 2014 study published in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology notes that an herbal mouth rinse containing clove, tea tree oil and basil reduced the microbial colony forming units, making it an effective antiplaque and antigingivitis agent.

There are two brands that dominate the electric toothbrush market: Oral-B, known for its oscillating brushes, and Philips Sonicare, famous for sonic brushes. We scoured best-of lists from sites like Engadget and Dental Dorks, and consumer reviews on Amazon to find the most highly-rated toothbrushes from each brand. We made sure to include brushes spanning a wide range of features and price points. We also brought in their most popular options suitable for young children — colorful, easy-to-hold brushes that play songs. To see if some lesser-known brands could compete with the two industry giants, we also included top-rated toothbrushes from some aspiring industry disrupters, like Foreo, Greater Goods and Jim Ellis.
As you begin your journey toward a dental hygiene education, it can be beneficial to shadow a dental hygienist in your area. Not only will the experience give you a chance to see the ins-and-outs of the profession, but some schools will value (and sometimes require) this additional step.
First, the models had to be available to the North American consumer. There are various brands that manufacture products above the average standard, but for various reasons, do not make them available in the United States. We have not included such brands and models because they would not be of use to our readers.
1984 – Unsupervised practice: dental hygienist practice without the supervision of a dentist is allowed in hospitals, group homes, nursing homes, home health agencies, Health and Human Service state institutions, jails, and public health facilities as long as the hygienist refers their patients to a dentist for treatment. Hygienists must have at least two years of work experience within the last 5 years.[44]
At first glance, brushing your teeth can seem like a simple activity. After all, most of us do it at least once every day. But brushing your teeth actually requires a bit of skill. Fortunately, brushing with proper technique isn’t difficult to learn — it’s more about reminding yourself to do so. We gathered the most important techniques to keep in mind for a healthy smile.
Even my several years old Flexcare has stronger vibration than both Diamondclean and Essence+. That is a mid range model and I can only assume they improved design to reduce this unwanted vibration. Some people may take this as having less cleaning power, however I do not agree on this view. Even old essence model is rated at 31,000 and only reason it gets negative points is due to lack of brushhead options.

At any rate, after reading someone else’s review that made the claim that this replacement head would fit the older base, I decided to give them a try and found that the reviewer was right. It was such a relief, because I love my Sonicare, and those old-style replacement heads were becoming difficult to find; and when I did find them, they were outlandishly priced.

The tasks hygienists may perform, and the extent to which they must be supervised by a dentist, vary by state and by the setting in which the dental hygienist works. For example, some states allow hygienists to diagnose certain health problems independently of a dentist.

Tomatoes and strawberries are rich in vitamin C which is excellent for oral health. You can rub these fruits directly onto your teeth and let it sit for 5 minutes. This way the tartar buildup will soften.
There is no proof that you even need to completely sanitize your toothbrush. So you may skip this step if you want to. If you are a little paranoid and just want to ensure that your toothbrush stays clean then sanitize it in solution about once a week.
Try gargling for 5 min with a mouthful of coconut oil .I came across this somewhere and have found it effective .No dentist can say it is abrasive .Most toothpaste are loaded with abrasive material and is one of the main reasons for teeth wear and tear.
Dental hygienists use many types of tools to do their job. They clean and polish teeth with hand, power, and ultrasonic tools. In some cases, they use lasers. Hygienists remove stains with an air-polishing device, which sprays a combination of air, water, and baking soda. They polish teeth with a powered tool that works like an automatic toothbrush. Hygienists use x-ray machines to take pictures to check for tooth or jaw problems. Some states allow hygienists with additional training, sometimes called dental therapists, to work with an expanded scope of practice.
While you’ll learn dental hygiene techniques and procedures, a dental hygiene associate’s degree will help you better understand basic and dental sciences. During the course of your studies, you’ll learn how to make decisions about patient care, hone your critical thinking skills and improve your problem-solving abilities.
First, mix one tablespoon of baking soda with ½ teaspoon of salt into the cup. After you wet the toothbrush with warm water, dip it into the mixture. Scrub teeth with it and spit. Continue the same process for five minutes.
Our only issue with the Sonicare 2 Series is that we wish it came with a pressure sensor. The most advanced Sonicare (the Sonicare DiamondClean) includes one that quickly activates as soon as too much pressure is applied. But the Sonicare 2 Series didn’t have a pressure sensor, and we couldn’t find any around its price point with an accurate pressure sensor either. For example, the Oral-B 1000 has one, but it required an unreasonable amount of pressure before alerting us — think trying to snap the toothbrush head off vs. an overly firm press. Pressure is important for technique, and we’re disappointed that an accurate pressure sensor isn’t considered a standard feature yet.
We have to assume that these numbers represent the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). But on more than one occasion we found online retailers displaying a higher “listed” price (which makes their “discounted” price look better).
Apps: Bluetooth connectivity and compatible phone apps that track your brushing habits are becoming increasingly popular with high-end models. It’s a neat feature, but a basic two-minute timer also encourages better technique and speaking with your dentist is really the best way to get updates on your dental health. The one exception is with kids’ brushes — apps can be helpful for encouraging children to brush. In fact, some brushing apps were so fun that children wouldn’t stop playing (manufacturers had to update their apps to make the game unplayable between brushes).
I personally preferred the Sonicare. Perhaps my Oral-B was told tech (likely), but I much preferred the vibrations to the rotating head. Also the batter life was abysmal… currently I go about 2 months on a charge on the Sonicare.
Overall (primarily based on what we’ve read in the comments found on large retailer websites) it’s our impression that first-time Sonicare owners are generally satisfied with this brush (as an improvement over their manual one) but previous owners tend not to be.
High ”bad” cholesterol and low ”good” cholesterol. High levels of ”bad” cholesterol, or low-density lipoprotein (LDL), are major contributors to arterial plaque formation. But that doesn’t tell the whole story. Everyone also has ”good” cholesterol, or high-density lipoprotein (HDL), circulating in the blood. HDL is believed to remove some of the bad cholesterol from plaque in clogged arteries and transport it back to the liver, where it is eliminated.

Outdated models – We avoided these not because they are out of fashion, but because they are mostly out of support. It is quite hard to find replacement parts and actual local support for models that the brands no longer manufacture.

“Patients who use electric toothbrushes are a lot less likely to suffer from gum disease”, says Dr Edwards-Lunn, co-founder of Dr Heff’s Remarkable Mints, a sugar-free mint that helps protect teeth from tooth decay and acid attacks throughout the day.  “Unfortunately, gum disease is a multifactoral disease. Just having an electric toothbrush doesn’t mean you won’t get it. But it will mean the risk is much reduced. The most important thing is removing the plaque.”
One of Amazon’s choices, this electric brush has gotten tons of positive feedback from customers. It comes with a free interactive app that rewards children for completing each brushing session, with 98% of parents saying it’s easier to get kids to brush longer and better. Like standard electric toothbrushes for adults, the Philips Sonicare for kids also features a 2-minute timer and quadrant pulses to ensure that they are brushing their teeth properly.

Surprisingly the smaller sized brush head did help remove plaque better than that of the ISSA, even on larger mouths. If you have the money to spare and want to experience a silicone toothbrush then we recommend the ISSA Mini over the ISSA. Just don’t expect it to beat out traditional bristles.

Since dental decay can start as soon as teeth erupt, to be effective, preventive oral health strategies need to target children early when transmission of oral bacteria from mother to infant commences and eating habits are established. Since infants and children are seen by their primary care providers (medical) frequently during the first two years of life, there is an opportunity for these practitioners to promote oral health and refer children for dental care. However, primary care providers receive limited training in prevention of oral diseases, while general dentists care for young children, but their small numbers nationwide made such services unavailable to most children. High-risk children usually have dental insurance through medicaid, but the percentage of dentists participating in Medicaid is low. Only one in five children covered by Medicaid actually receives preventive dental care.
Many Americans today enjoy excellent oral health and are keeping their natural teeth throughout their lives. But this is not the case for everyone. Cavities are still the most prevalent chronic disease of childhood.
To further evaluate school absences related to dental care, one needs to consider not only the average number of days missed but the impact of absences. Although only 17% of the absenteeism in this study was associated with dental pain or infection, such absences increased the likelihood of poor school performance, whereas absences for routine dental care did not. Finally, it is also important to consider the mechanism by which children’s oral health status affects their school performance. Children in good, fair, or poor oral health were more likely to perform poorly in school, suggesting that dental disease may adversely affect children’s performance independent of school absences. Altogether, our findings suggest that improving children’s oral health status may be a vehicle to enhancing their educational experience.
Personally, I had my first dental check-up within 2 months of starting with this brush. You know the part where they dig and scrape (D&S) during the part of the exam you dread? My D&S time dropped from the usual 45+ agonizing minutes to less than 10. On the next six month exam (9 months into Oral B use), D&S was even less time-consuming and not dreadful at all. I get compliments on my teeth (as in ‘your teeth look great; what whitening system to you use?’).
Anyway, electric toothbrushes are a prime example of too much choice! Which brand to go for? Which type of cleaning action (e.g. sonic cleaning or the rotating-head type)? Do I need the extra functions of some of the more expensive models?
If you’re about to order these heads make sure you have a Sonicare 2 or 3 or one with the slide on head. I had one that has a screw on head which these won’t fit (and replacements are pretty expensive). Not the sellers fault, just gave me a reason to upgrade to a Sonicare 2 sooner 😊

Several chronic diseases are known to affect children, requiring significant adjustments in life management and leading to decreased quality of life. According to National Institutes of Health estimates, 20% to 30% of children and adolescents in the United States have chronic health conditions.6 Among the most prevalent diseases of childhood are dental caries, asthma, diabetes, and obesity, with dental caries being the most common, occurring 5 to 8 times more frequently than asthma, the second-most common condition.1 Data from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999–2002) indicated that 41% of children aged 2 to 11 years had dental caries in their primary teeth and 42% of those aged 6 to 19 years had caries in their permanent teeth.7
This metric is closely connected with comfort, as both of these scoring categories help to encourage good brushing habits. This category encompasses many different aspects of electric toothbrushes, from the visual appeal of each model to the ease of cleaning and replacing a brush head. Most of the models that we reviewed feature a one-button interface, and all of the products we looked at scored well in this category, but there were a few differences that stood out. You can see how these toothbrushes ranked for ease of use in the chart below.
Next, we wanted to find out just how effective the toothbrushes were at getting the surface of your teeth clean. We did this in two ways: feel, and physical results. The first metric was more subjective and was the result of using each toothbrush for 5-day stints, and gauging how clean my mouth actually felt after each test. While it’s easy to say that my teeth were clean on the surface (even the cheapest electric toothbrush will take care of visible debris), the real results were more nuanced. How much residual food was left after flossing? Did my tongue feel cleaned or scraped down to the bone? Gum comfort during the brush?
Oral health is achieved with adequate nutrition, a properly functioning masticatory apparatus, a flow of saliva, and mechanical cleaning of the oral cavity by artificial means. Interruption of one or more of these factors produces significant changes in the oral cavity, leading to collection of debris and formation of plaque, tartar, dental caries, and periodontal disease. The astute nurse will consider these factors in her overall assessment of the client and will institute in the total plan of care specific nursing measures to prevent, minimize, or reverse changes in the oral cavity. The choice of agents to be used for oral hygiene should be based on a knowledge of their characteristics and function rather than on their convenience of preparation or tradition. The method of implementation should be determined by the client’s status mentally and physically, and the frequency of care should be determined by a continued evaluation of the results achieved. Too often in nursing we accept into use agents or methods introduced for care with little or no evidence of their effectiveness, and tend to perpetuate their use because of their convenience or our assumptions that they are beneficial. A review of the literature regarding oral hygiene has helped focus on the areas of agreement as well as on the areas of question regarding the efficacy of the components of oral care: the criteria for assessment, the agents selected, the methods used, and the frequency required. Further scientific inquiry should be done by nurses to build on the knowledge and criteria enumerated–specifically, to define further criteria for assessing changes in the condition of the oral cavity–and to study the effects of various agents on the pH of the mouth.
I bought Wirecutter’s Oral-B recommendation for a replacement about 9 months ago. I quickly found I couldn’t handle the small round brush head that came with it – it was unpleasant. I need a compact brush head so I purchased the DeepSweep brush head. It was a little big for my preferences but still a better option than the original brush head. That was more $$ on top of the Oral-B price, though still an overall good price. As I traveled with the Oral-B, I became increasingly annoyed by the lack of a sanitary cover accessory. Another difference is my Oral-B base stayed clean (as did my second Sonicare) but the Oral-B charger collected an unbelieveable amount of whitish gunk after just a week or so. Maybe it wouldn’t happen if I was using the small round brush head but my Sonicares did not collect gunk to this extent (some but not as much as Oral-B). So that is another turn off.
So I’d recommend these replacement heads to anyone that thinks the Sonicare heads are ridiculously expensive (blew my mind when I saw them). Fits perfect, preformes perfect, and is the perfect size, unless you like those super small brush heads.
Because you may be replacing your child’s toothbrush so frequently, you might want to buy a few extra when you find a toothbrush your child loves. They’ll be cheap to stockpile, unless they are electronic, and that way you don’t run the risk of not being able to find it when it’s time to replace your child’s toothbrush.
Did you know that the average adult between the ages of 20 and 64 has three or more decayed or missing teeth? If you are missing one or more teeth, there are plenty of reasons to correct the problem. For one thing, a large space between your teeth may affect how you speak or eat. Even if it’s not noticeable, a missing molar can affect how you chew. Remaining teeth may shift and in some cases, bone loss can occur around a missing tooth. With today’s advances, you don’t have to suffer from missing teeth.

Several species of bacteria that cause periodontitis have been found in the atherosclerotic plaque in arteries in the heart and elsewhere.22 In addition, researchers from the State University at Buffalo found that people with periodontal disease have elevated blood levels of C-reactive protein, an inflammatory marker associated with heart disease and stroke.23
An abscess is one of the most dangerous of all common dental emergencies. An abscess is a type of infection that occurs between the teeth or in the soft tissue of the gum below the teeth. Left untreated, this infection can spread to the bones of the jaw and other soft tissue areas. Rinsing your mouth several times with salt water will help to draw the pus that is created by the infection toward the surface of the tissues. This is a true dental emergency and you should contact your Newark emergency dentist as soon as possible for treatment of your dental abscess.
Health Promoting Schools. The WHO Health Promoting Schools initiative aims at ‘achieving healthy lifestyles for the total school population by developing supportive environments conducive to the promotion of health. It offers opportunities for, and requires commitments to, the provision of safe and health enhancing social and physical environment’.56 Of particular relevance to oral health promotion would be nutrition, smoking and accident prevention policies. In addition, efforts such as the Schools Meals Campaign and School Nutrition Action Groups (SNAG) are initiatives which aim to provide students with a range of food choices within schools including nutritional options.57,58 Such initiatives recognise the importance of increasing the availability of cheap and appealing nutritious foods and drinks within school canteens, tuck shops and vending machines.
Pursonic is an interesting brand in that while we could not find a whole lot of information on them (including on their own website) they have their product on the shelves of just about every major retailer imaginable. Bestbuy, Target, Walmart, and QVC are just a few of the retailers who stock their product.
This is one of Oral-B’s high-end level electric toothbrushes. As such it comes with a lot of shiny and gadget-like options that are meant to make brushing a fun activity. As a matter of fact, this model is so advanced, it comes with its own app available for iOS and Android. Bluetooth connectivity allows the user to track their daily usage and get real-time feedback. The Focused Care feature, as Oral-B call it, is meant to aid users to implement the specific brushing instructions given by their dentist.

All patients presenting to any dental practice anywhere in Europe or worldwide have a right to safe, quality care. This requires a transparent definition of the attributes and measures to enable quality assurance, that is to objectively demonstrate that high quality, safe care is being provided.25 To do this requires a focus on population level measures using quality control (a process to maintain standards) but this provides values for the average patient rather than individual patients. In order to provide personalised, patient-centred care at the individual level, there is also a need for clinical autonomy and trust within a practitioner-patient therapeutic relationship.26 This is because there is no such thing as an ‘average’ patient.4,25,27,28 As such, maximising quality of care for populations should not be at the expense of jeopardising the therapeutic relationship between individual patients and health practitioners.2,25
Electric toothbrushes are becoming more and more popular, even for children. The kinds of electric toothbrushes that you can get for kids vary greatly, but usually they are available in your child’s favorite character design. From talking toothbrushes to toothbrushes that give an indication as to how long you’ve been brushing your teeth for, these electric toothbrushes are a great way of encouraging your child to clean his or her teeth.
The vast majority of dental diseases are infectious, irreversible and destructive. They can only be successfully diagnosed and treated by a licensed doctor of dental surgery (DDS) or dental medicine (DMD) with support from a qualified dental staff.

We broke our testing process up into four weighted metrics: Cleaning, Comfort, Ease of Use, and Battery Life. We conducted over a dozen individual tests spread across these metrics, with each toothbrush receiving a subscore for each metric. Our results are detailed in the sections below.

New Sonicare Before And After

The Goby is a brand-new product without the track record of Philips or Oral-B. Though we’re impressed by the Goby for its simplicity and efficacy, we can’t say yet how long it will last with daily use. It is simply too new a product and too new a company to know. Goby offers a lifetime warranty on its brush, but, as of now, it’s unclear if the company will outlive your brush.
Is awesome. Thank g-d for your website. It’s gorgeous with clear, concise, accurate information. A consumer’s dream. I did about 3 days worth of research on electric toothbrushes before I found your site, and I saw that your research and findings matched mine exactly. I cannot find a better reason to trust your information. Thank you so very much. Wow.
Our testing methodology has also changed a little bit, as we now give less preference to smartphone features and more weight to the oscillating and rotatory performance of the toothbrush. Having said that, the Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 remains our top choice for people who are looking to get the most feature-packed model.
About once a month, I use a damp toothbrush dipped in baking soda and gently brush away from my gums, keeping it as dry as possible. Then I floss it under my gums in a downward then outward motion, which pulls the loose plaque out to be rinsed away. At 61, only 1 crown due to popcorn chipping off a corner. I use Reach rinse with fluoride with no alcohol. No need to ‘feel the burn’ to be germ free
Dentists diagnose and treat problems with patients’ teeth, gums, and related parts of the mouth. They provide advice and instruction on taking care of the teeth and gums and on diet choices that affect oral health.
We’ve been using quip for a months now and after replacing the brush head, one of the two brushes has stopped working and the other developed a crack. So far, we’re not impressed and probably going to switch to the Oral B
Is the Essence+ old and dated Sonicare technology? – Yes. In its era, wasn’t this the technology that Sonicare continued to build its reputation on? – Yes. Considering that this brush only costs $40, plus the fact that it can use a wide array of current Sonicare brush heads, does this brush make a reasonable choice, especially as compared to brushing manually? – We think it does. Is this the absolute best Sonicare brush and a best choice for everyone? – No.
I would stay away from a scalar (AKA a “dental pic”). If you know what yoi’re doing, that’s fine, but it’s risky and I would really do a lot of research on using one first. Research all sorts of write ups and videos first but, generally speaking, I wouldn’t advise it as too many people will screw something up even if it’s just 1 out of every 10 or 20 people, that’s still a lot of people.
Foods to Eat: Eat foods that are high in fiber to help reduce the absorption of cholesterol from the intestines. Include plenty of low-fat foods, low-sodium foods such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains in your diet.
Our view is that these apps are fun, but for a short period of time. After a while, they become repetitive and monotone. So, if a person’s attachment to tooth brushing is associated with the app, it will quickly disappear. Therefore, not creating long-term discipline.
Via our researcher & Amazon: “Unlike brushes that just vibrate, Oral-B’s clinically proven technology pulsates to break up plaque and oscillates and rotates to sweep plaque away”& “The Vitality series only rotates”.
Compared to Sonicare, you’re much more limited in brush head style and size. However, the small, pointed Precision Tip is a design not duplicated in the Sonicare line and could be a valuable aid for some. Overseas travelers may be inconvenienced by the lack of 220volt charging.

Daily preventive care, including proper brushing and flossing, will help stop problems before they develop and is much less painful, expensive, and worrisome than treating conditions that have been allowed to progress.
Cons: How cheap my boss can be, he doesn’t ever want to spend money on equipment for the office. The commute to work is horrendous. And the stress level is so high because it is a very fast paced office.
Dual Head – refers to electric toothbrushes that have incorporated the rotating function, as well as the side-to-side movement function. As you can see in the image below, each head is responsible for a different motion. This design is advertised as more efficient in terms of plaque removal. However, users have complained that the size of the head makes cleaning more difficult.
They obviously took a step back in the 2 Series to have a stylish entry level product at a very attractive price. Many will still be happy with it considering the price and comparing it to a manual toothbrush. I also notice the 2 Series ships with the Plaque Control head. This head is small. I had noticed when I moved to the slightly larger DiamondClean head, the 2 Series felt even more underpowered. Therefore, if someone is going to use the 2 Series, I recommend sticking with the Plaque Control head, it makes the most out of the lower power 2 Series.

The best way to do that is by flossing every day before going to bed or anytime you feel uncomfortable – especially after eating meat. Flossing should be completed by a rinse with mouthwash or using the jet from the oral irrigator.
This discussion however relates how two Sonicare publications reported that two different models whitened teeth to the same degree, yet at that point in time when the separate studies were done, only one of the brushes actually featured a fancy whitening mode. The other just the standard 31,000 stroke/min mode.
Storing your toothbrush upright (bristles up, handle down) after use is very important. This allows the water to drain from the bristles easier and all the water and particles collect at the bottom of the handle of the toothbrush. Also you may notice that a nasty scum collects at the bottom of containers that do not have a drain at the bottom, and you do not want your bristles touching that scum that could cause your bristles to collect mold and bacteria.

Battery Types – Rechargeable motor powered toothbrushes come with either nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) or Lithium-Ion batteries. We found that manufacturers do not adhere to one type or the other. Instead, they seem to utilize each type based on the needs of the model.
For the jock itch part (its fungal) I take a large cup like from 7-11 and use as much Apple Cider Vin as you want with warm water and pour it on the area.. after a few treatments in the shower, issue goes away.
Microwaves and dishwashers are pretty effective at killing bacteria. For instance, the microwave produces radiation while the dishwasher uses soap and hot water to get the job done. Similarly soaking your brush in mouthwash or white vinegar will help. As will rubbing just one drop of Dental Pro 7 into the bristles of your brush.
However, the rechargable battery in the brush has just failed (after 18 months of daily use) and is not replaceable. Not good. I liked this system better than a single plug-in brush, but now I’m not so sure.
1. Allow for the AC adapter to fit flat against the wall as opposed to sticking straight out. It looks awkward permanently sticking out of a bathroom outlet. I wound up purchasing and installing an outlet with USB ports so I can skip the adapter and plug the charger directly through the USB port. It is a little less conspicuous.
Our original goal for this page was one where our analysis would simply be based on a comparison of models according to their features, as documented by information collected from Philips Sonicare websites, publications, user manuals and support representatives.

There are plenty of free apps—including Oral-B’s for Android and iOS—that can be used with non-“smart” brushes, powered or manual, to help you time and track your toothbrushing, remind you to clean your tongue and floss, and so on. Dr. Lopez-Howell pointed to The Children’s Oral Health campaign’s 2min2x website, produced in collaboration with the Ad Council, which offers a series of two-minute videos kids can watch while brushing.

The best budget electric toothbrush is the Pursonic S500. It has a reasonably comfortable handle, though our testers found its powerful vibrations a little rough while brushing. In addition to being one of the cheapest electric toothbrushes, it includes 12 brush heads, which should be enough to last about three years – about as long as you’ll own it. Most other brands are more expensive and only include three or fewer brush heads.
I used my first Sonicare for two years but the rubberized base became moldy and smelly and I needed to replace it. The second I used for 4 years and it became useless when the brush head would not stay on the base during use.
These are great replacement toothbrush head for my Sonicare brush handle. I was using the oem brush head from sonicare for the past 2 years until I realized that there were cheaper alternatives online. I decided to give these a try and they function the exact same as the sonicare ones.Out of the box, the brush heads come with all the colored rings and brush head covers like the real ones do.

If a toothbrush differs significantly from previously accepted toothbrushes, the Council may request clinical studies to demonstrate that the toothbrush could be used without supervision by an average adult to achieve a significant decrease in mild gum disease and plaque over a 30-day period.16
Healthy teeth are necessary for our overall well-being, allowing us to eat properly, speak clearly, look and feel good. It is important to understand that brushing and flossing teeth must become a habit that will follow us for all our life.

Philips Sonicare brush heads are interchangeable with all Sonicare power toothbrush handles, except PowerUp and Essence. All Philips Sonicare brush heads click on and off the brush handle for a secure fit and easy maintenance and cleaning.
Takeaway: It’s easy to see why the Oral-B Pro 1000 is one of the most popular electric toothbrushes. Users cite features such as light weight, comfort, durable build, and effectiveness. Some reviews say the action may be a bit rough for people with sensitive gums, but a vast majority declare this Oral-B electric toothbrush a winner.
Overall, we found the oscillating-format Oral-B toothbrushes to be louder and more sonically grating than the vibrating format of the Sonicare brushes we tested. Without a point of comparison, it’s possible our slight annoyance would go away as we got used to it.

When using this head you can expect to feel a vigorous cleaning action. Two descriptions we noticed in some online reviews were that using it feels like experiencing a weedwacker or going through a car wash.
Too many modes: And the only way to know which modes you’re on is by looking at the app. The brush also doesn’t remember the last mode you were on. Luckily, you can disable any modes you don’t use in the app.
You should start on the outer surfaces of your top teeth and then move to your lower teeth. Once you have cleaned the outer surfaces, you should clean the inner faces of your teeth on the upper teeth and then lower. Finally, you should clean the edges of the teeth where you chew.
Dentistry has been proud of the fact that it has been one of the most “proactive” of all health care professions in the area of disease prevention. Since the opening of the first schools of Dental Hygiene in the early 1900’s, preventive dentistry has played a prominent role in most dental practices. Dental Hygienists are solely oriented toward promoting oral health, through instruction of preventive techniques and regular dental maintenance which they administer.
Rougher than my manual brush, that I was using before. The first couple days my gums were bleeding, but after that my mouth got used to it. This is a really good bargain at $20. It is a lot better than the 5 dollar spin brushes you might see at your local grocery stores but is no where near as expensive as those 500 in 1 feature brushes you can find here on Amazon.
Begin using toothpaste to brush your child’s teeth when he (or she) is 2 years old. Young children tend to swallow toothpaste when brushing, rather than spitting it out. Introduce fluoride toothpaste when your child is old enough not to swallow it. As soon as two teeth touch each other, floss between them once a day. You can use regular floss or special plastic floss holders.

• Private foundations can partner with CMS and participating states to support outreach for state-based demonstration projects including campaigns to raise awareness of changes in state oral health benefits available and to promote the use of newly covered services.
If you are going to travel with your toothbrush, it is a good idea to store your toothbrush head in a travel holder. This will prevent the head from becoming dirty or broken. It should be noted however that a toothbrush holder should only be a temporary storage solution and you should not keep the head in the holder for prolonged lengths of time as this will allow bacteria to multiply and will leave your toothbrush head unhygienic.

Similar to endodontists, these specialists – one of nine such unique fields recognized by the American Dental Association – utilize machinery to treat and diagnose patients. Specifically, these dentists make use of radiographic imaging to treat those diseases and ailments that impact the teeth, mouth and the maxillofacial region, which consists of the face and jaw. While X-rays are a popular option, OMRs also rely on plain and computed tomography, MRIs, ultrasounds and other forms of digital imaging. OMRs are among the first adaptors of new technology, using innovations in the field of imaging to find increasingly effective ways at understanding the impact of oral disease and what that means to patients.
It takes just 2 minutes to thoroughly brush your teeth. Our QuadPacer lets you know when you’ve spent the optimal amount of time on each section of your mouth while our Smartimer signals when your total time is up. Together they help you reach your recommended brushing time, every time.
I used the FlexCare Platinum Connected for a week. It works similarly to the Kolibree and the Sonicare for Kids. With your free hand, you hold your smartphone and follow a 2D or 3D representation of your teeth that highlights where you should focus and for how long. I got used to holding my phone in one hand and the toothbrush in the other, but you may want to think about investing in a waterproof phone case before you start brushing, especially with the vibration set to high.

Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums, which may also affect the bone supporting the teeth. Plaque is a sticky colourless film of bacteria that constantly builds up, thickens and hardens on the teeth. If it is not removed by daily brushing and flossing, this plaque can harden into tartar and may contribute to infections in the gums.

Once again, we have a product that is powered by the patented Sonic technology. I have used this product for a while and the total performance was impressive, especially the firmness of brush. I also loved the fact that the device supports three intensity levels — in case if you needed extra cleanliness.
The metal toothbrush is cool to the touch and a bit heavier, which makes it feel expensive. That said, the plastic version definitely doesn’t feel cheap (which, TBH, I expected it to). I liked the metal one better — I prefer the metallic colors, and really liked how it felt in my hand — but follow your heart and your bank account.
The trend worldwide is for persons to live longer and to retain more of their natural teeth; as a result, older adults have more complex dental needs. Developed countries with national health systems that include dental care have seen increased costs as their population ages. As oral health costs have increased in this aging population, some governments have examined new ways of preventing oral diseases, particularly root caries. Access to dental care for homebound elderly and nursing home residents can be problematic even in countries with national health care systems.
When you are choosing between different types of toothbrushes, you’ll find that there are plenty of different options for you to choose from. When it comes to powered toothbrushes, two of the main kinds of toothbrushes that you can choose include battery powered or rechargeable toothbrushes. But which one will be best for your needs?
Most of us are probably aware they smoking is incredibly bad for our health, causing an untold amount of misery due to a vast variety of medical problems. I have been using a Sonicare/ oral B for 23 years and have always appreciated the clean feeling and happy dental check-ups. Recently I left home for an extended vacation and was about to order a $189 brush when I found an unbiased website that compared and contrasted benefits of electric model toothbrushes. This brush was rated as a top choice and ‘bang for the buck’ model. I ordered it as a temp electric toothbrush and it works Great!

Pro Clean (Genius Pro 8000, Pro 6000) – Oral-B states that this mode runs the brush head at a higher frequency. That sounds good, and if we owned a brush that had this setting we’d probably tend to use it.

Many people have inflamed gums that are sensitive to the brushing. The electric toothbrushes mostly feature soft bristles, providing gentle brushing without irritating the gums. Many of the powered brushes also include different modes with a separate mode for sensitive teeth and gums. The brush in this mode usually works at a lower speed than standard brushing mode.
Having no gum disease for a lifetime will reduce your risk of heart disease, dementia. If you have diabetes, it will reduce complications. The reduced inflammation in your body will make you better at fighting infection and maybe even make it easier to lose weight. Keep up the good work!
We would have expected that product names such as ProfessionalCare, SmartSeries, Pro Series and such actually referred to something. But after reading through every piece of Oral-B literature we could find (website pages, product user manuals, printable fliers) we couldn’t distinguish what it was.

Oral Hygiene Tips Auction

Locate plaque using a stain. Plaque is practically invisible, so it can be very difficult to know how much is on your teeth. To overcome this, you can purchase “disclosing tablets” in the grocery or drugstore. Once chewed, these tablets will stain the plaque on your teeth bright red, making it easy for you to examine your teeth for plaque and identify the areas you need to target with a toothbrush.
As an adult, you are not immune to dental problems. In addition to maintaining a good home care routine, the best thing you can do is to schedule regular dental checkups and professional cleanings. You also have a variety of cosmetic options available, including orthodontics (braces), whitening (both in-office and at-home) and bonding (veneers).
[Frequency is measured in Hertz (hz) and it’s units are cycles per second. One brush stroke (either up or down) equals 1/2 cycle, so the number above must be divided by 2. And then, of course, there are 60 seconds per minute, so the number above also needs to be divided by 60.]
I’m a dental hygienist and I promise you the picture with the plaque/tarter removed is after a clinical hygiene appointment. The gum tissue is red and has a little bleeding because the instruments have been in the area removing the tarter. Not oil pulling, baking a soda or vinegar. With that being said, I do not know the research behind those methods helping to stop these plaque and debris from forming. But I do know it will not remove the calcified deposits.
Speaking of your tongue, use it regularly to feel around and locate any plaque.  Our tongues are great ‘plaque detectors’, and we can use them to find any spots we have missed or have not brushed effectively.
Growth is in response to an increasing demand for dental care and greater utilization of dental hygienists to perform some services previously performed by dentists. Job prospects are expected to remain constant. Career opportunities are available in private dental offices and clinics, nursing homes, schools, post-secondary institutions, public health, research, and in private business.
Charging voltage – We have considered sonic models that can run on 110 – 220 volt electrical systems. This feature is very convenient for people who travel around the world. It is also a simple technology that we believe should be easily implemented in all rechargeable sonic toothbrushes. So, if you don’t have it, you didn’t make Dental Dork’s awesome list.
Connect your brush head to the Aura Clean brush handle and dampen it. Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the brush head, gently place the toothbrush bristles against your teeth at a slight angle towards your gum line, and press the Power button. To change from the default Super Clean Mode to Sensitive Clean Mode, press the smaller button below Power once. (You’ll also notice the LED mode indicators below the Mode Selector button.) Using the map included with your instruction manual, brush each quadrant by slowly holding the brush head against each tooth for a few seconds before moving to the next one, letting the bristles do the work; when the Aura Clean pauses, it’s time to move to the next quadrant. When the brush shuts off, rinse your brush of any remaining toothpaste and dock in the Aura Clean Base Station.
So you basically tested everything except the cleaning power, which is sort of the “main feature”. I mean, the word “bacteria” shows up twice in the article. It’s clear that most people don’t brush enough or the wrong way, so a criteria like “percentage of bacteria / plaque removed per second of brushing” seems important.

The Oral-B Pro 1000 has a limited two-year warranty that requires the buyer to retain the receipt and ship the product to an authorized service center if it needs fixing. This is typical for a product in this price range and category.
Well, one thing to note is that the brush’s second row of bristles is dark blue and fades when used – just like official one! When the row of brushes becomes completely white, you will know when to change the brush head.
This inclusion of this wonder spice should come as no surprise, because it has been used as a pain remedy for toothache for centuries. It is widely available in supermarkets, because it is a common ingredient in Indian cuisine. So, you should have no trouble finding cloves already ground and ready to use. Mix the ground spice with a little water, until it forms a paste. Apply this paste directly to the stained areas and leave to rest. Rinse thoroughly.
Note: When it comes to the EasyStart and QuadPacer functions, the information found on Sonicare’s website doesn’t always agree with what is found in the user manuals of individual models. On this page we’ve tended to side with what’s shown on the website, assuming that it is the most up-to-date information.
The Genius Pro 8000 is preceded by the 6000 model and followed by the 9000 model. The reason we chose to feature this particular model in our list, is because it has the most positive customer reviews. Additionally, the 8000 series offers many improvements compared to the 6000 model. While the Genius Pro 9000 did not improve much when compared to the Pro 8000.
Electric toothbrushes on the whole aren’t exactly known for their ruggedness and longevity (at least not nowadays). So in an era of lowest-possible-cost manufacturing and planned-obsolescence product design, both initial and replacement costs should be factors that are considered.
The battery will last around 2 weeks if used twice a day with the Clean mode. We only tested the other modes briefly to see what the difference in power was. Considering that Clean was the hardest mode of the 3, we can assume battery will last the same or longer if used with the other 2 modes. Having said that, it takes 24 to fully charge the battery. That is on average 8 hours longer than other more advanced Sonic toothbrushes.
There are certain accessories, such as charging stations and power cords, which all electric toothbrushes come with. Some models come with extra brush heads, which could be useful because eventually, you will have to replace them. But, other accessories, such as travel cases, can prove to be quite expensive and end up never being used.
If you’re ready to purchase one of our five finalists, check out the matrix above. But if you’d like to learn more about not just our top picks, but electric toothbrushes and oral hygiene in general, read on. Up ahead: clean, healthy teeth. Your mouth is going to thank you.
This toothbrush work great for about a month. Then the power began to wane and is now completely dead and does not work. I bought this toothbrush in December so it didn’t even last 6 months. My fiance has a toothbrush as well bought at the same time and while her still turns on the power is definitely not the same period I suspect hers will be going out soon.
It’s a good idea to clean your toothbrush on a regular basis. Some models, like the TAO Aura Clean, come with cleaning stations that use UV light to clean your electric toothbrush. While these are convenient, they aren’t really necessary. Studies show that simply rinsing your toothbrush under hot water will do the job. In addition, experts suggest storing your toothbrush in an open-air holder — don’t cover your toothbrush head. For those who do want a deeper clean, soaking the toothbrush head in antibacterial mouthwash or peroxide will do the trick.
Hyposmia is a partial or complete loss of the sense of smell. It can be disturbing for the individual, but it can also be hazardous if they cannot detect, for example, a toxic gas. Causes include allergies and head injuries. It may be linked to diabetes and multiple sclerosis (MS). Treatment will depend on the cause.
Priced under $100, the Sensonic comes with 3 brush heads and a travel case. Considering that it also has the QuadPacer and EasyStart modes, together with a 2-speed setting, this Waterpik electric toothbrush is a bargain.

At first glance, brushing your teeth can seem like a simple activity. After all, most of us do it at least once every day. But brushing your teeth actually requires a bit of skill. “More and more dental hygienists will be hired to do this preventative health care,” but Swanson Jaecks says that physicians’ offices, emergency rooms and medical clinics are increasingly hiring dental hygienists to provide their patients with more holistic health care. These professionals can also be hired in academia and in research.
Although most electric toothbrushes can get the job done without any extras, there are a couple worth noting. In particular, if you travel often, it may be a good idea to get a toothbrush that comes with a travel case. Some toothbrushes also come with sanitizers to kill off bacteria on the bristles.
The colors in this pack of three toothbrushes will vary. This has been tested and evaluated by dental professionals and is commonly recommended by dental health professionals, like The Dental Insider. It also has outstanding reviews online.
Is the Essence+ old and dated Sonicare technology? – Yes. In its era, wasn’t this the technology that Sonicare continued to build its reputation on? – Yes. Like many others, I just want to thank you for all your time in putting this together. Wish I’d found this before I spent the HOURS I did trying to research all these models on the web and in the stores. Needless to say I was pleased to see that the Healthy White+ which I ended up buying was your “best buy”. Like another reviewer said, you should review everything in the world.
Your “clinical evidence” consists of one set of articles from one set of authors in one month’s special issue of one particular publication. The “researchers” are all from one company (P&G). They hijacked one publication for one month (September 2012, “special edition”). They referred to Oral-B as “novel,” which is highly inappropriate for any professional publication, while at the same time, they referred to Sonicare as “marketed,” as if Oral-B’s products aren’t marketed. They offered no validation of the data, meaning that it could have all been made up.
I highly don’t recommend leaving acids on teeth, however, Vitamin C on the teeth (and in general) can do wonders so you can use the sodium ascorbate (not ascorbic acid) form of vitamin C on your teeth. Use the correct brushing technique. When brushing your teeth, hold the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle against the gum line and sweep the brush away from the gums, in a short vertical, back-and-forth, or circular motions. Try not too scrub too hard, as this can actually damage the enamel on your teeth and cause high sensitivity to any type of stimulus.[2]
