Tartar is also known as hardened plaque. It is composed of organic and inorganic compounds. The organic compounds consist of bacteria and the inorganic compounds consist of various minerals, mostly calcium phosphate crystals. It has been estimated that every gram of tartar has over 200 million bacteria.
A 2014 study published in the International Journal of Advanced Health Sciences suggests that a significant amount of dissolution of plaque dextran was observed in vinegar (4 percent acetic acid) as compared to distilled water and glycerin.
Overall, the DiamondClean will give an effective clean and is compatible with a library of brushing heads. It’s an upgrade from the Sonicare 2 Series due to its added convenience of an effective pressure sensor and an app that displays your brushing progress for even easier brushing. It’ll cost an extra $125, but for feature-loving brushers the DiamondClean is a pick you won’t regret.
Tartar buildup can be prevented with regular brushing and flossing, along with regular visits to your dentist for professional cleanings. If you don’t have dental insurance, many plans are available that make regular cleanings affordable. Some people get tartar more easily than others, and your risk can also increase if you have diabetes or if you smoke tobacco.
How is the Sonicare Series 2 with the tongue cleaner and spray compare to a regular series 2? It is important for me that I am able to properly clean my tongue and in my experience electric toothbrushes tend to be tricky at that.
Most dental hygienists earn an associate’s degree, which takes about two years to complete. Your schooling will include time in the classroom and lab as well as a period of clinical experience. The latter is necessary to give you real-world experience before you embark on your career.
Is awesome. Thank g-d for your website. It’s gorgeous with clear, concise, accurate information. A consumer’s dream. I did about 3 days worth of research on electric toothbrushes before I found your site, and I saw that your research and findings matched mine exactly. I cannot find a better reason to trust your information. Thank you so very much. Wow.
Our research showed that the majority of toothbrushes approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as ultrasonic, generate around 196,000,000 movements per minute. This means that they function at around 1.6 Mhz. Unlike oscillating or sonic models, this type uses powerful ultrasound waves to clean below the gum line.
Digestive enzymes can help to remove fats and plaque from the body by breaking them down. They are best eaten in foods containing them, but can also be supplemented. Foods containing digestive enzymes are probiotics, water, apricots, bananas, papaya, garlic, asparagus and whole grains.
Their S520 toothbrush is their most expensive and highest performance one. Pursonic maintains that the S520 model is capable of reaching up to 40,000 brush strokes per minute. Our tests, however, found this toothbrush to be significantly weaker compared to pretty much any Philips electric toothbrush that is priced over $30. In our opinion, the brush strokes per minute did not exceed 15,000.
Cleaning your teeth properly twice a day for 2 minutes each time is the most important part here. Our full guide explains how to brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush as a poor teeth cleaning approach is more damaging than the incorrect brush head. The reality is each brush head can just give that extra bit of focus in achieving and assisting oral health care goals.
Most of the current higher-end Sonicares either are or were top-of-the-line models, or at least introduced some new brushing feature. There seemed to be a natural migration of models on down the Sonicare line up as each successive newer one was introduced.

Most dental professionals agree that a soft-bristled brush is best for removing plaque and debris from your teeth. Small-headed brushes are also preferable, since they can better reach all areas of the mouth, including hard-to-reach back teeth
Obviously, we don’t speak for Philips. So if having this option is important to you, you should contact them or read the packaging of the product you’re considering before making your purchase, just to make sure you have all of the details straight.
Watch the Step-By-Step Routine How to Remove Tartar BuildupIf you don’t remove plaque from your teeth with proper flossing and tooth brushing, you are increasing your risk for developing a cavity and tartar buildup. Cavities are among the most common dental problems in people around the world, but good oral care, including proper flossing, can help prevent them. And don’t forget to schedule regular dental checkups for a professional cleaning and to identify problems before they become serious. If your dentist identifies tartar buildup or a cavity early, he or she might recommend a series of fluoride treatments to help restore or re-mineralize the demineralized tooth enamel and help prevent the need for a filling. Fluoride treatments can be in the form of a gel, rinse, foam or varnish. The fluoride product is placed on the teeth for a short time and is incorporated into the tooth structure to make enamel harder and more resistant to demineralization (break-down). Tartar buildup bonds strongly to enamel and can only be removed by a dental professional. If you start seeing any signs of plaque or tartar buildup, be sure to seek treatment immediately. Only a dentist can remove tartar, but you can proactively prevent it with a good brushing regimen utilizing Oral-B® Electric Toothbrushes. The Oral-B PRO 5000 even removes 22% more plaque than Sonicare Diamond Clean.*
In addition, some electric toothbrushes, like the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean, offer more than one way of charging. One is through the easy use of a USB, and the other through a standard charging station. The convenience of charging may not be a big deal to everyone, but it is a diverse functionality nevertheless.

Capable of removing up to 10 times more plaque than a manual brush, whilst achieving 2 times more surface contact, the Gum Care brush head makes use of all the sonic vibrations passed out by the brush handles motor. It whips toothpaste into bubble and drives them deep between your teeth and along the gumline for gentle and effective cleaning.

Remember: food residues, especially sweets, provide nutrients for the germs that cause tooth decay, as well as those that cause gum disease. That’s why it is important to remove all food residues, as well as plaque, from teeth. Remove plaque at least once a day — twice a day is better. If you brush and floss once daily, do it before going to bed.
I find this very interesting. I have never had an electric toothbrush last more than a couple of years before the battery dies out (slowly at first, then completely). I am actually on this discussion board because the battery on the Oral B, bought approx. 2-3 years ago, now needs an every-other-day charge.
If you can’t find the Oral-B Pro 1000, get the runner-up, the Philips Sonicare 2 Series. Like the Pro 1000, the 2 Series is not trumped up with unproven features and includes everything you need in an electric toothbrush. The 2 Series runs much more quietly, but unlike the Pro 1000, it comes to a full stop after two minutes of brushing (rather than restarting the cycle as the Pro 1000 does) and has a less diverse, more expensive range of brush heads, giving you fewer options for texture and shape.
This page does accomplish that goal, using those sources. And while performing our comparison process the information we collected allowed us to form a distinct opinion about which features are important to have versus those that seem to offer just limited value.
Heads up – the referral link goes to an Amazon page showing that the Oral B Pro 1000 is no longer available, but if you do a search across Amazon you can find a different listing for Prime. Definitely want to support, so let me know when/if the switch is made.
Most brands, Philips included, have a 90 day grace period. Which means, you can still return or exchange the sonic toothbrush if you realize you have not made the right choice. We strongly advise that you take advantage of this warranty.
I very rarely floss. I know I should, but I don’t do it often. After switching to this brush, dentists have not told me that it looks like I don’t floss anymore! I am NOT saying you can avoid flossing by using this brush, but I take it to mean that it does a way better job than my old manual toothbrush ever did
The powerful motor drives a high-frequency and high-amplitude brush movements to perform over 31,000 strokes per minute. The result is the power fully extends from the brush handle all the way to the tip of the brush head.
