Guide To Oral Hygiene Toddlers

From associate’s degrees to master’s degrees, you’ll have plenty of dental hygienist schooling options to choose from. Weigh the differences between the programs to decide which one will bring you closer to your career goals.
I highly don’t recommend leaving acids on teeth, however, Vitamin C on the teeth (and in general) can do wonders so you can use the sodium ascorbate form of vitamin C on your teeth. When making a glass of a gram or two with water, I sometimes swish it all around for a minute or so, a few separate times, before swallowing.
I would have believed in the accuracy of this site more had you not entered the info about the Quip brush. I made that unfortunate leap and it was a complete waste of money. The brush itself is little more than a manual brush that lightly vibrates. This serves no cleaning purpose, only that of a quadrant timer. So, if you’re looking for a chunky, uncomfortable to use manual toothbrush that requires batteries, the Quip may be for you.
One huge advantage of electric toothbrushes is that they are quite fun to use. After all, they are technological gadgets that have timers, flashing lights, they vibrate and therefore bring more joy to the process of teeth cleaning. Also, they are undoubtedly more effective and efficient in cleaning plaque than manual toothbrushes. But, this is not the question at hand.
Then there is another thing in the beginning, but not really negative, that you get a tickling feeling when you use the toothbrush. The feeling is really surprising, but after a while of using the brush it almost disappears completely. It is quite drastic in the beginning, but in a way I am missing the feeling a bit. After charging the feeling comes back a bit :-).
These are the latest effort of scientists and marketers to get people motivated to brush their teeth more often. Smartphone apps allow users to connect their toothbrushes to their phone devices and keep track of brushing habits and techniques. Most applications are quite interactive and offer high and low score based statistics on brushing performances. The ambiguous and scientifically untested thesis is that such apps help develop long-term discipline.
Standing at bed and bath because my old sonicare died and so did he one my friend gave me so I could use up my old brush heads and I was overwhelmed by too many choices!! You helped me make up my mind so quickly and I really appreciate it. Healthy white for me!!!
Once we understood the features of all the products, it was a matter of getting them in hand and seeing what it was like to hold them, charge them, use them, replace their heads, and have our brushing sessions timed and monitored. To stress-test them, we also dropped our picks onto a tile floor from chest height to test for durability and submerged them in water while they were running for a full two-minute brushing cycle to test for water resistance. We compared the brushes on all these usability points to arrive at our conclusion.
How is the Sonicare Series 2 with the tongue cleaner and spray compare to a regular series 2? It is important for me that I am able to properly clean my tongue and in my experience electric toothbrushes tend to be tricky at that.
Having shiny white teeth can be a real confidence boost and there are few nicer compliments that ‘you have a lovely smile’ or ‘your teeth look great’ and what if you can achieve this without having to undergo cosmetic dentistry.
Priced under $100, the Sensonic comes with 3 brush heads and a travel case. Considering that it also has the QuadPacer and EasyStart modes, together with a 2-speed setting, this Waterpik electric toothbrush is a bargain.
I have owned my toothbrush for four years. In fact, I bought this product in 2012 for $31 and am only reviewing it now! It looks like the price went down a bit since I bought it. Since then, I have obviously bought many other replacements since $31 is expensive in comparison.
The whitening mode is advertised to remove tooth stains from coffee, red wine, tobacco, tea, and ex-girlfriends. All of this within 14 days. Just kidding about the ex-girlfriend. But, maybe Philips should consider it for their advertisement.
Plaque is a biofilm composed of bacteria. It’s literally an enormous mass of tiny bacteria. The individual organisms are microscopic, but when enough of them aggregate together, you get a slimy substance. Plaque formation is a normal, natural process. Soon after you brush, you’ve already started accumulating a “pellicle,” a saliva layer consisting of glycoproteins. This protein layer actually protects your teeth from bacterial acids. However, the glycoproteins also allow bacteria to adhere to the pellicle, leading to plaque formation.
It is entirely possible that we are overly critical of some features. But, when sonic toothbrush prices range from $25 to $250, a more vigorous strategy towards categorization is needed. And, since we are used to sailing against the current, here are some features that we wittingly did not factor in.

“I like the Oral B Braun brush for its circumferential action on the tooth surface,” says David Tecosky, a Philadelphia-based dentist. A pressure sensor lets you know when you’re brushing too hard, and an in-handle timer pulses every 30 seconds to signal that it’s time to move to a different part of your mouth.

There are many options out there to disinfect your toothbrush ranging from special UV lamps to using bleach, dishwashing soap and your dishwasher!  Thankfully, keeping your toothbrush clean and infection-free does not need to be so complicated.  In fact, you most likely have the ingredients sitting in your cabinet right now.
They obviously took a step back in the 2 Series to have a stylish entry level product at a very attractive price. Many will still be happy with it considering the price and comparing it to a manual toothbrush. I also notice the 2 Series ships with the Plaque Control head. This head is small. I had noticed when I moved to the slightly larger DiamondClean head, the 2 Series felt even more underpowered. Therefore, if someone is going to use the 2 Series, I recommend sticking with the Plaque Control head, it makes the most out of the lower power 2 Series.
Along with technical know-how, dental hygienists should have excellent communication skills. “The client’s head is in their lap basically,” Swanson Jaecks says. “They should know how to read a client and relate to a client.” She also says good hand-eye coordination is a must, as are critical-thinking skills, since dental hygienists are on the front lines of assessing a client’s oral health.
This works 2 ways – firstly by covering your brush head to keep germs away from it, and second by using various essential oils known for killing bugs (e.g. tea tree, clove, peppermint). These are designed to be disposable however, so you are supposed to replace them every 3 months. It’s not my personal choice, but a lot of people swear by these. They cost around $4 each RRP but you can get multi-packs, which can bring the price down a lot.
You may not be aware of this but the whole reason to buy a Sonicare is because of its full-power 31,000 brushstrokes-per-minute brushing action. (In some promotional materials this may be stated as the equivalent 62,000 brush movements/minute.)
Hydrogen peroxide can be used to clean your bathroom counters, used as a mouthwash, and even used to disinfect your toothbrush. Just soak toothbrush bristles in hydrogen peroxide for several minutes, then rinse thoroughly with hot water. (thanks Becca and Tara!)

If you are prone to developing tartar patches or are worried about plaque, pick up a tartar control toothpaste variety. They contain a concoction of ingredients designed to battle against crusty build ups in the mouth. In some cases, they also contain triclosan. This is an antibiotic substance that can kill off a number of bacteria strains.

Fluid dynamics refers to the process where the intense vibrational speed of the sonic brush’s bristles agitate the fluids that surround the user’s teeth (water, saliva), to the degree that they’re able to disrupt dental plaque colonies even beyond where the bristles of the brush actually touch.
As compared to higher-end Sonicare’s, this brush’s mechanism seems noisy and less refined. Some commenters on this page have complained that they consider this brush under powered as compared to models they have used before. (We have more to say about these issues below.)
That said, I was working full time and making a solid salary, but I went into hygiene with the same idea you have. I am in school again and working two days a week. I actually got a raise switching to part time (2days/week) (lost my benefits though – something to consider), but am making almost the same salary as I was working full time.
No ordinary brush head though is this.  Thanks to a built in chip, when you fit onto a compatible brush handle, the microchip communicates with the brush handle to launch the optimum cleaning mode and intensity level for the most effective plaque removal experience.

If you are looking for a more professional approach to help remove excess plaque on your teeth, consult with your dentist about sealants. Generally, sealants create an invisible barrier between your teeth and bacteria. According to the American Dental Association, “Dental sealants act as a barrier, protecting the teeth against decay-causing bacteria. The sealants are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth ( premolars and molars) where decay occurs most often.” Sealants must be applied by a professional, so contact your local dentist for more information about this procedure.
I’ve used regular toothbrushes my entire life, but at the recommendation of my new dentist, I looked into an electric tooth brush. I asked my dentist if she had a recommendation, but she more or less said that any electric toothbrush will likely be better than a manual toothbrush, but that she personally uses a Sonicare tooth brush that’s a few years old. With that in mind, down the rabbit hole if internet researching I went.
Having up to 31,000 brush strokes per minute, this model is slower than the diamond clean. But, do not fool yourself. If you have never used an ultrasonic toothbrush before, you will feel the vigorous power of this elegantly designed teeth cleaning gadget. Despite being slower, the 2 Series Sonicare is also considerably cheaper and it works wonders for removing plaque and eliminating destructive bacteria in your mouth.
An Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Dental Hygiene introduces students to the field of dental science. Many associate degree programs in dental hygiene focus on clinical experience and general education coursework. The first year of an AAS program in dental hygiene introduces students to dental science and focuses on meeting general education requirements. The clinical component of the degree, which is typically completed in the second year of enrollment, is satisfied by meeting a minimum number of hours in a healthcare setting. Prospective students should ensure that their AAS program in dental hygiene is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, which is an educational governing body of the American Dental Association. Courses in this program may include:

  1. If you’re interested in considering a sonic toothbrush that’s not a Sonicare, we’ve noticed the Braun Oral B Pulsonic. Its features list places it in the same general category as the Sonicare models we discuss on this page.
We’ve started a Kickstarter project after reading this news. It’s called Brushield. Anti-microbial aluminum toothbrush case. And it protects your toothbrush from many external threats. Including toilet germs. Check it out if you don’t like to brush your teeth with germs and etc. kck.st/1Ow1Nch
Pour 1/2 cup or 120 ml of water into a glass. Next add 2 tablespoons or 30 ml of white vinegar and 2 tsp or 10 mg of baking soda and mix well. Place your toothbrush (es) into the glass and leave for 30 minutes.  Rinse well.
In my experience they are just as bad in terms of reliability, I’ve bought five of these 1000 series brushes in the last four years. That said, I still feel like they’re the best toothbrush out there for the money. Without user replaceable batteries, these things just inevitably die.

  2. We found the downfall of the 7000 model in its NiMH battery. When brushing twice a day, while connected to the app, the battery only lasted for 8 days. Compared to other similar toothbrushes, this is not cool, to say the least. Especially when it takes 24 hours to fully charge the battery.
Waterik is the undisputed champion when it comes to water flossers. But, not too many people know that they also make a pretty good electric toothbrush. Perhaps, they got tired of the never-ending argument about flossing vs brushing and decided to dominate both sides.
Sonicare models reviewed. – A comprehensive review of the features/prices of all of the current models of the Sonicare lineup. Differences and comparisons between each of the individual product lines are pointed out.

  3. agreed. they left out models that use regular batteries claiming they are “wasteful” which is untrue. i’d much prefer replacing a universal rechargeable AA/AAA eneloop battery and avoid the much more wasteful planned obsolescence of a built-in rechargeable. an added benefit is that i could use the brush while traveling, knowing i can always replace the battery should it die. plus, they are MUCH cheaper. unfortunately, due to lack of comparison reviews, i bought into the proprietary rechargeable scheme.
That includes the way it looks (although you can just leave the decorative stickers off), and the way its brushing timer (which you can’t turn off) functions and sounds. If you’re an adult and considering this brush, you really must use the link below to learn more about it so to make sure you want to put up with these features.
According to the American Dental Association, no commercial products can sterilize a toothbrush and it’s not necessary. The ADA notes, “There is insufficient clinical evidence to support that bacterial growth on toothbrushes will lead to specific adverse oral or systemic health effects.”

  4. This is great! I used to boil water and put my toothbrush in there for awhile, but these methods seem much better. Wish I would have known about them BEFORE I got my self-sanitizing one! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
The exception to the above are the Essence and PowerUp lines, which each use their own specific type of head. (We make note of all of this below. We explain Sonicare brush head options in general, on this page.)
Dr. Katia Friedman, dentist and owner of Friedman Dental Group, explained that, “When we brush by hand, we average about 300 strokes per minute, which isn’t bad. But electric toothbrushes can average up to 31,000 to 40,000 strokes per minute. One of the main benefits of the vibrations or oscillations is that it cleans your teeth more thoroughly — it eliminates plaque and bacteria better than a manual toothbrush due to the increased number of strokes that it provides.”
Rinse your mouth with baking soda mixed with warm water afterwards. Also, you can use the same procedure with other food that contains vitamin C, like bell peppers, berries, lemons, lime, oranges and papaya.
For the person who commented about recurring strep throat…gargle with salt water – one part salt to 2 parts warm to hot but not boiling water. Gargle 3x per day for a couple days. The salt kills strep.
The war on battery life is important because there are still some big gaps between leading manufacturers. There are certain toothbrushes that take 24 hours to charge fully, while others take 12 hours. Once fully charged some devices can last up to six weeks when used twice a day. In comparison, there are still devices that will not last half of that time.
There are certain accessories, such as charging stations and power cords, which all electric toothbrushes come with. Some models come with extra brush heads, which could be useful because eventually, you will have to replace them. But, other accessories, such as travel cases, can prove to be quite expensive and end up never being used.
