No, it does not. But be careful when using stuff like the orange peel. Don’t press too hard and be very gentle with them. Also, if your braces are new, do it at least a week after you get them because they will still be sour then and might hurt if they are new. If you have had them a long time ago, it shouldn’t hurt your braces in any way.
There is research that compliments both types of power motored brushes. If we consider the amount of movement and coverage of brushing as decisive factors, then the sonic toothbrush sounds like the right choice. A 12-week clinical trial has demonstrated the sonic type brushes can reach about 1/8 of an inch deeper than other rotary brushes. This reason and the above mentioned fluid dynamics should be good enough to proclaim the sonic toothbrush as the winner.
First, mix one tablespoon of baking soda with ½ teaspoon of salt into the cup. After you wet the toothbrush with warm water, dip it into the mixture. Scrub teeth with it and spit. Continue the same process for five minutes.
I was a Dental Assistant for many years. I considered becoming a Dental Hygienist but changed my mind for the following reasons. My job was full time. The Hygienist had to work part time at 2 offices. Dentist don’t want to pay the salery for full time employment. I knew hygienist who worked at 3 offices and others who couldn’t find jobs. Some worked through dental employment agency’s, a day here a day there. The agency took a cut of their salary. Dentist cram their hygiene patients into a few days. They don’t want to pay for any benefits. The work is very repetitive, much like an assembly line and sedentary. The hygiene room is usually small. The Hygienist usually sees new patients first. It’s their job to clean up some of the most poorly kept mouths which could be absolutely disgusting with the worst bad breath imaginable. So, even though hygienist make a higher hourly wage, being an assistant proved to be much more interesting and secure.
I wanted something with a pressure sensor. I like to lift heavy things at the gym and have a tendency to strong arm everything, including brushing my teeth which apparently may have contributed to some gum erosion. The current top model Sonicare (DiamondClean Platinum) does not have a pressure sensor. However, the FlexCare Platinum Connected does come with a pressure sensor. Oral-B models from the 1000 up have a pressure sensor. Based on price, I elected to compare the Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Connected to the current top model Oral-B, Genius Pro 8000.
The affordable Oral-B Pro 1000 makes taking good care of your teeth easy. You can pay more for additional features, but according to the experts, there’s no need to—this simple, entry-level brush cleans your teeth as well as any of the many more expensive brushes.
Thank you Tracy! As a hygienist I was hoping someone with some sense would comment on this ridiculous post. But who knows, maybe it really was meant to be a big joke? ? you gotta love the before and after pictures too. I’m pretty sure all that calculus just magically melted away with baking soda and orange peels. Why haven’t we just been using this home remedy all along? I work my fingers to the bone scraping this off all day long the hard way. Who knew??
There are plenty of free apps—including Oral-B’s for Android and iOS—that can be used with non-“smart” brushes, powered or manual, to help you time and track your toothbrushing, remind you to clean your tongue and floss, and so on. Dr. Lopez-Howell pointed to The Children’s Oral Health campaign’s 2min2x website, produced in collaboration with the Ad Council, which offers a series of two-minute videos kids can watch while brushing.

To find the best electric toothbrush, we put in almost 100 total hours of research, interviewing experts, evaluating every model on the market, and testing 12 toothbrushes ourselves in hundreds of trials at the bathroom sink. We found that the best toothbrush for most people is a simple model called the Oral-B Pro 1000. It has the fewest fancy features of the models we tested, but it does have the most important things experts recommend—a built-in two-minute timer and access to one of the most extensive and affordable lines of replaceable toothbrush heads available—for the lowest price. That, according to the experts we spoke to, is as much as an electric toothbrush can or should do for you. The extras available in electric toothbrushes that cost $150 more don’t make them any more effective than the Pro 1000.
Capable of removing up to 10 times more plaque than a manual brush, whilst achieving 4 times more surface contact, the Premium White brush head makes use of all the sonic vibrations passed out by the brush handles motor.  It whips toothpaste into bubble and drives them deep between your teeth and along the gumline for gentle and effective cleaning.
I didn’t realize I needed a new toothbrush until I happened onto this part of the site. Been using an Arm and Hammer “Spinbrush” ($12 or so at the supermarket) and it’s been fine I guess. But I bought the recommended Oral B model based on the author’s perfect teeth and my 1-clicking habit and there certainly is a huge leap in performance going to a much better tool like this. Much more powerful and seemingly effective. The timer is a pretty cool feature I didn’t even know existed in a toothbrush. I was surprised to find my normal brushing time is more like three minutes as I brushed well past (like a minute) the little 2-minute-warning jig it does.
The Sonicare does not “oscillate,” it merely vibrates. “Sonic Pulverization” feels great, but we were unable to find any scientific evidence that backs its efficacy. Every clinical study says that the Oral B is better when it comes to cleaning your mouth.
In order to fully charge, the Pro 1000 took about 16 hours. This is 8 hours less than the Pro 7000 took. It also lasted longer than the Pro 7000 by 2 days (10 days total). Since there is only one brushing mode available, we were not able to play around and conduct different time-based tests.
A person could conclude that the best brush to buy is simply the one that can best overcome any damping effect. And due to the constant improvement of products, that’s most likely to be the newest, latest model available.
1 Newton is roughly the amount of force that a object weighing 1/5 lbs. places on the surface it is resting on, such as the palm of your hand. (A smallish apple is often given as an example of something that weighs about one-fifth of a pound.)
All dental hygienists in the United States must be licensed by the state in which they practice, after completing a minimum of two years of school and passing a written board known as the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination as well as a clinical board exam. After completing these exams and licenses, dental hygienists may use “R.D.H” after their names to signify that they are a registered dental hygienist.[32][33] Dental hygienists also have to become licensed in the state in which they intend to practice. State licensure requirements vary, however most states require an associate degree in Dental Hygiene, successful completion of a state licensure examination, as well as a clinical examination also typically administered by the state.
The Mesa Community College program is accredited by The Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education.
Hi, I am currently a high school student who is interested in pursuing the career of a dental hygienist. I wanted to know if there are any health benefits with this career for example retirement benefits, paid vacations, medical benefits ect..?
Tartar or calculus is formed when calcium and phosphate bind in your mouth they form crystals these crystal harden and thus you have tartar . Using toothpaste with tetrasodium pyrophosphate  helps to prevent tartar from forming by removing calcium and magnesium from our saliva inhibiting the formation of calculus. A clinical study on tartar was done over 12 week period using toothpaste with tetrasodium pyrophosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate  on 73 subjects who had a Volpe Manhold Calculus Index of 7.0 and greater. After the twelve weeks, the subjects saw a 43.5 % reduction in Calculus Index score. Triclosan is an antimicrobial which clinical studies shows kills the germs between our teeth and gum but some dentists believe this is not that important ingredient once we keep our mouth clean. These toothpaste can be easily be found in your local store check them out.
Run your toothbrush through the dishwasher. You wash other plastic utensils in the dishwasher, so washing your toothbrush should be safe. If you are worried about it melting, however, make sure to wash it on a lower heat setting.
Today’s busy lifestyles typically cause large amounts of stress that can raise hormones to an unhealthy level in the body. Factors like smoking, drinking too much and overeating also contribute to poor arterial health. All of these things together can cause weight gain and blockages in the arteries.
NiMH batteries, on the other hand, are not only bigger in size, but also tend to gradually lose their ability to fully recharge. A phenomenon referred to as “memory effect”, a situation that does not affect Lithium Ion batteries.

  1. Dental hygienists provide clinical services in a variety of settings such as private dental practice, community health settings, nursing homes, hospitals, prisons, schools, faculty practice clinics, state and federal government facilities and Indian reservations.
Hygienic Travel Cap – The replacement Sonicare brush heads come with caps for hygienic storage, effectively protect your toothbrush head is not outside pollution, each brush heads base has a easy to identify colored rings so you can easily tell every brush apart.
Surprisingly, the body remains more or less the same. It is still chubby, round and feels heavy when held. Partially, because Philips has chosen to continue using a NiMH battery instead of switching to a Lithium Ion. In addition, the Essence+ does not offer any improvements in terms of noise reduction and vibration. It still feels and sounds like the older model.
Privately labeled models – China has begun to manufacture knockoffs of the better-known toothbrush brands. A lot of sellers have begun importing these generic products and give them private labels, such as Joe’s Super Brush. Okay, this is a bad example, but you do get what I mean. Such products are untested and most definitely not ADA approved. As such, they are usually cheaper, come with fewer warranties and guarantees, if any, and could even be dangerous to use.

  2. In 1915 Connecticut amended the dental practice act to include the regulation of dental hygienists and other states followed amending dental hygiene regulations outlining the scope of practice of a dental hygienist.[9]
According to the American Dental Hygienists Association, there are more than 330 dental hygiene programs offered in the U.S. Most hygienists have at least an associate degree, but some get bachelor’s degrees in dental hygiene – and even master’s degrees to further their careers. To practice, dental hygienists also have to obtain a state-specific license. Although the requirements vary state to state, most require graduation from an accredited program and the completion of a written and practical exam.
Tartar is also known as hardened plaque. It is composed of organic and inorganic compounds. The organic compounds consist of bacteria and the inorganic compounds consist of various minerals, mostly calcium phosphate crystals. It has been estimated that every gram of tartar has over 200 million bacteria.
You can even make your own mouthwash: You will need one-half cup baking soda, one cup water, 10 drops essential lemon oil, 4 teaspoons vegetable glycerin, and 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel. Mix all the ingredients and store in a bottle; use once or twice a day for a combination of nice-smelling breath and plaque removal.
Don’t forget your front teeth! One downside of the quad-pacer features, Dr. Lawlor explained, is that “people always miss the front teeth — they brush from left to right and forget to bring their brush across the front.” To get the most out of your quad-pacer, you’ll want to split your front teeth between quadrants.
THANK YOU, vey much for your information which was very significant to me and it should also be for other persons. They have to keeep in mind, that you did not have to do this and you did it out of the kindness of your heart.THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU, so much and may you continue to do what you do best and may GOD bless you and your loved ones.BEST WISHES TO YOU.
The Sonicare 3 Series also has the QuadPacer feature and the easy-start feature. The former is an automatic mode that vibrates every 30 seconds to remind you to move the brush from one set of teeth to the next. It does that 4 times per brushing. The easy-start is a mode that progressively increases the intensity of the brushing over the next 14 or so days. This allows users to slowly get to 31,000 brush strokes per minute.
I’m a professional classical singer who is interested in a more holistic and natural approach to living. This approach has helped me and my singing and my general well-being and I want to share some of my insights with you.
Prior to this, dental hygienists were first domestically trained in 1974 for use in the New Zealand Defence Force. The one-year course was taught by the Royal New Zealand Dental Corp at the Burnham army base outside Christchurch.[12] Hygiene training was briefly offered at the Wellington School for Dental Nurses in 1990 as 2 week a supplement to Dental Therapy students training.[12] However, this was quickly discontinued.[12]

  3. We’d also suggest (although it’s just conjecture on our part) that Sonicare technology of yesteryear carried forward (which is what this brush represents) may offer design and build-quality advantages over newer “economy” models (2 Series, 3 Series) that seem to have only been designed as cheaper Sonicare alternatives.
Next I searched for any studies comparing rotary (Oral-B) to oscillating (Sonicare) power brush heads. I won’t post links to all the scientific studies I read, but the are quite a few on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) site. The more recent ones favor rotary brush heads.
The best brush head to use from the range is the DiamondClean head, be that the Compact or Standard sized option.  The tightly compacted diamond shaped bristles create a stain-removal pad and offers a superior clean and can whiten teeth in just one week, through effective cleaning and stain removal.
The Sonicare for Kids is our top pick for this category because it both trains and encourages kids to brush properly. In addition, the handle is closer in size to adult models than the Oral-B Disney’s, which means it isn’t too big now, and your kids won’t outgrow this $40 toothbrush too quickly. Instead, they’ll be able to improve their technique and become familiar with using a traditionally-sized electric toothbrush as they develop more dexterity.
Keeping the Aura Clean Toothbrush in first class condition takes place within the Aura Clean Base Station. Inside is a ring of UV-C light that attacks pathogens from all angles. The Aura Clean Base Station keeps the brush head protected, clean and away from environmental contaminants and also dries the brush head while charging – allowing the brush ready for use when you are.
Along with technical know-how, dental hygienists should have excellent communication skills. “The client’s head is in their lap basically,” Swanson Jaecks says. “They should know how to read a client and relate to a client.” She also says good hand-eye coordination is a must, as are critical-thinking skills, since dental hygienists are on the front lines of assessing a client’s oral health.
The pressure sensor is meant to alert the user when they are brushing too hard, something that dentists and experts agree is a bad thing. In theory, then, a pressure sensor can be good. However, in our testing, we found that some brushes with pressure sensors required the user to bear down very hard on their teeth before the alert would trigger. The amount of pressure a user can apply before the sensor discourages them suggests the available pressure sensors are more of a gimmick than an actual useful feature.

  4. When you are sick there may be more pathogenic bacteria than normal, and when you brush your teeth some of that bacteria is collected on the toothbrush. Studies have not been done to show how much is left after you rinse your toothbrush and if it would be enough to cause you to get sick again in the future or not. Just to be sure, when you are sick disinfect the toothbrush by letting it soak in an antibacterial solution for 10 minutes after brushing each time.
The Philips Sonicare 2 Series is our top pick for offering an effective clean without feeling gimmicky. As a sonic toothbrush, its brushing head vibrates rapidly to help remove plaque. Our testers reported that this style caused the least amount of irritation to their gums when compared to oscillating models from brands like Oral-B. It has a two-minute timer, divided into four 30-second segments, to ensure you brush long enough to effectively clean your teeth and gums but not so long that you damage them. At $40, the Sonicare 2 is a solid investment in improving your dental health.
Arteries are a critical blood vessel in circulation. These are the large blood vessels that send oxygenated blood from the heart and lungs out to the rest of the body. Due to unhealthy diet, age and lack of exercise, plaque can accumulate on the walls of the arteries and ultimately lead to heart attacks and strokes. Most often, doctors use medical treatments to reduce plaque when it is severe. The good news is you can take steps to cut down on plaque naturally before you get to that point.
This lower model usually sells for less than $30 and it can be a pretty decent first electric toothbrush. Considering your hand is tired and ready to make the switch from manual. Because it is priced much lower than any of the Oral-B Pro series, the Vitality does not come with the 3D cleaning action technology. Instead, it comes with the 2D technology which includes oscillation and rotation modes, but it lacks the pulsating one.
So besides just a strict comparison of features, we’ve also incorporated these more subjective types of information throughout this page where we think it holds merit and therefore is important to do so.
Tartar control toothpaste. There are specialized toothpastes on the market that are specifically designed to control tartar buildup. Some of them also contain triclosan, an antibiotic that can kill off cavity-causing bacteria.
Back in the day inventors were happy when they got to the point of running electricity through a toothbrush. This, however, is no longer the case. Just like technology did not stop with one kind of smartphone, it did not stop with one kind of motor-powered toothbrush. The continuous consumer demand for better and newer products has shaped the dental health industry into one of the largest in the USA.
Almost all accredited dental hygiene programs minimally offer an associate degree in science or an associate degree in applied science. Applicants to an associate degree granting institution usually complete mandatory pre-requisite coursework prior to beginning the dental hygiene program. Graduates of a four-year college or university are granted a baccalaureate degree in dental hygiene.
The words TAO Clean, short for ‘The Art of Clean’ are what motivate us to create offerings that instill exceptional cleanliness habits. We firmly believe that every object we create must deliver a wonderful user experience from start to finish. It must be built on outstanding aesthetic design and be both easily and seamlessly entwined with your routine. Put simply; we make lifestyle tools that help you keep your cleaning rituals and that we’re proud of.
One thing worth pointing out about electric toothbrushes is that they are not cheaper in the long run. Electric toothbrushes cost about 10 times as much as manual toothbrushes, and you have to replace the brush heads at the same frequency (every three months), each for about the same cost as a manual brush. What you get for the higher cost is less friction in achieving good brushing habits, and, according to research, a significant reduction in plaque and gingivitis, even if that reduction may come only from having a brush that encourages good habits, like a full two minutes of brushing for each session.

  5. So the article had me feeling confident in my decision to be a dental assistant then working my way up to a dental hygienist, but all of these negative comments are starting to make me re-evaluate my choice. Is dental school really as hard as everyone’s making it out to be? Is it really that hard to find a job in this industry? I’m so unsure now and I’m not used to that. Someone please help!!
1 Newton is roughly the amount of force that a object weighing 1/5 lbs. places on the surface it is resting on, such as the palm of your hand. (A smallish apple is often given as an example of something that weighs about one-fifth of a pound.)
This is great! I used to boil water and put my toothbrush in there for awhile, but these methods seem much better. Wish I would have known about them BEFORE I got my self-sanitizing one! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
The Oral-B Pro 1000 is many consumers’ first choice of an electric toothbrush. It is inexpensive, it cleans well, and it is easier to use when compared to most high-end models that come with smartphone apps and Bluetooth connections. As all other Oral-B models, it is oscillating, so that makes it a bit slower when compared to our top choice – the Sonicare 2 Series. When tested, we found the Pro 1000 is also not as gentle on the gums. We believe that to be due to the harder bristles on the brush head.

  6. When compared to the Essence models, the 2 Series is a smaller and more convenient to use brush. This is cool. It makes it easier to share with smaller members of the family, such as kids. But, we are not sure if it justifies the higher price.
That difference was especially true for the compatible apps — the Sonicare app was much more intuitive and the real-time feedback was better. For instance, the Sonicare app displays a 3D model of your teeth and the toothbrush will recognize whether you are angling your brush properly. If brushing properly, the teeth on the display will progressively get whiter. However, if you use poor technique the teeth on the display won’t change, and if you use too much movement or pressure, an alert will display on your phone. The Oral-B app isn’t bad, but our tester reported navigating the menus was more difficult. In addition, the position detection for brushing angle was less accurate than the Sonicare’s app — our tester eventually found themselves flailing the Oral-B 8000 around to find the right position. While apps and brushing modes aren’t essential, they will make a toothbrush expensive. If we are paying extra for features, we want them to be easy to use, and for that reason the DiamondClean takes the crown.
Attending an accredited dental hygiene school is necessary to become licensed in your state. The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) reviews a school’s course descriptions, objectives, learning experiences and curriculum content, among other things. This process ensures a school meets high standards and students can rest assured they’re receiving a valuable education.
The point here is that dental care has become more than the ordinary people can afford today. So before a dental nurse gets critical maybe her boss needs to look over the prices he charges the people he services as it has become a difficult choice as much as health care has become.
I fully agree that the “extra features” are largely useless. But, bottom line, a powered brush makes sense based on everything I have seen. I don’t care if it’s Sonicare or OralB… both should be better than manual…
The best brush head to use from the range is the DiamondClean head, be that the Compact or Standard sized option.  The tightly compacted diamond shaped bristles create a stain-removal pad and offers a superior clean and can whiten teeth in just one week, through effective cleaning and stain removal.
