Don’t forget any teeth. As strange as it sounds, our experts told us that people often forget to brush their front teeth. Dr. Friedman reminded us to aim for a complete brush and to “tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes” for our front teeth.
Storing your toothbrush upright (bristles up, handle down) after use is very important. This allows the water to drain from the bristles easier and all the water and particles collect at the bottom of the handle of the toothbrush. Also you may notice that a nasty scum collects at the bottom of containers that do not have a drain at the bottom, and you do not want your bristles touching that scum that could cause your bristles to collect mold and bacteria.
Studies have found that electronic, or powered, toothbrushes may get rid of plaque better than manual models. No matter which type you use, be sure it has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. These have undergone rigorous quality control and safety tests.
But a simple rinse doesn’t remove all traces of bacteria anyway, and a damp toothbrush is a fantastic breeding ground for bacteria to spend all night long multiplying. So by morning, your toothbrush still looks clean – but it’s far from sanitary.
During the research process, we spoke with several experts on the subject of dentistry, including dental school faculty at leading research universities, a professional dentist, and a consumer advisor appointed by the American Dental Association (ADA), which confers a Seal of Acceptance on dental care products that seek the certification and meet a set of agreed-upon criteria.
At the time of writing there are an extensive range of electric toothbrush models available from Sonicare, so it is understandable that it is not all that simple to understand which brush head is suitable for your toothbrush.
Even though we’ve been brushing and flossing our teeth for years and years, many of us are surprised to learn that we’re not doing it properly. Case in point: Did you know that proper brushing takes at least two minutes? Most adults do not come close to brushing that long.
Connect your brush head to the Aura Clean brush handle and dampen it. Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the brush head, gently place the toothbrush bristles against your teeth at a slight angle towards your gum line, and press the Power button. To change from the default Super Clean Mode to Sensitive Clean Mode, press the smaller button below Power once. (You’ll also notice the LED mode indicators below the Mode Selector button.) Using the map included with your instruction manual, brush each quadrant by slowly holding the brush head against each tooth for a few seconds before moving to the next one, letting the bristles do the work; when the Aura Clean pauses, it’s time to move to the next quadrant. When the brush shuts off, rinse your brush of any remaining toothpaste and dock in the Aura Clean Base Station.
Having said that, while never a “top” model itself the Essence represents the yesteryear Sonicare technology that this line built its reputation on (both in the marketplace and dental research). That means you can be effective with this brush. And for people stepping up from a manual one, the difference should be noticeable.

Plaque buildup can have serious health consequences. The bacteria in plaque create acid by feeding on the sugars in the foods you eat, which can damage your teeth and cause cavities. The bacteria also make toxins that can aggravate your gums, leading to periodontal disease (gum disease).
Rub orange peel on your teeth. The vitamin C in citrus fruits such as oranges may help to prevent microorganisms from growing on the surface of teeth. Try rubbing the rind of the orange over the surface of your teeth before going to sleep at night.

The biggest problem with the Essence is that you’re severely limited on the style of replacement brush heads. And for that reason the Essence+, while newer and less tested but seemingly the same mechanism, to us seems to make the better choice.
“We may find that we need to carefully balance the supplementation with vitamin D3 and omega-3 fatty acids, depending on each patient in order to help promote efficient clearing of amyloid-beta,” says Fiala.
Once tartar has formed, only a dental professional will be able to remove it from your teeth. So, visit your dentist every 6 months to remove any plaque and tartar that might have formed and to prevent further problems.
As you may expect, much of a dental hygienist’s job requires working with people’s mouths, and it’s possible that you will come into contact with the occasional patient who has bad breath, swollen gums or tooth decay.
CVS Rechargeable Sonic (discontinued): Not too expensive as brushes go, but requires users to press the power button multiple times to cycle through the superfluous brushing modes to turn the brush off.
Toothpaste (dentifrice) with fluoride is an important tool to readily use when tooth brushing. The fluoride in the dentifrice is an important protective factor against caries, and an important supplement needed to remineralize already affected enamel. However, in terms of preventing gum disease, the use of toothpaste does not increase the effectiveness of the activity with respect to the amount of plaque removed.
You see, saliva is very mineral rich to help remineralize any surface decay on our teeth. Since the lower front teeth come into contact with this rich source of minerals first, some of the minerals are deposited there first.
Offering the deepest clean, the Sonicare electric toothbrush is not as effective without such an engineered brush head. Taking full advantage of the high-frequency and high-amplitude brush movements, performing over 31,000 strokes per minute, the brush head takes that power and drives toothpaste and fluid deep in between teeth.

For the longest time I was convinced that these replacement heads (“E-series”) would not fit my old Sonicare brush base, which I think dates from before 2007. It is the kind where the brush head is perfectly veritical (no angle). From the Sonicare pictures I now think maybe it is one of the “Advance” series – I can’t tell from the markings on the brush base itself, and the packaging is long gone. (See photos I have posted which shows the old base and head.)
The majority of the more than 200,000 dental hygienists work in dental offices alongside dentists. Think of a dental hygienist as an insurance agent. “You see dentists when you have a problem,” says Kelli Swanson Jaecks, president of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association. “But you see dental hygienists for preventative health care.”
All of the toothbrushes in our Best Sonicare list (and probably all of the Sonicare models that you’ll currently find for sale) offer the option of being able to use at least some type of Compact head.
First, mix one tablespoon of baking soda with ½ teaspoon of salt into the cup. After you wet the toothbrush with warm water, dip it into the mixture. Scrub teeth with it and spit. Continue the same process for five minutes.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) adds that soaking your toothbrush could lead to cross-contamination if you use the same disinfectant over a period of time, or share disinfectant between users.

As mentioned above, this was only a laboratory study. And because of that, one would have to assume that its conditions were relatively ideal as opposed to what may exist in the mouth. And for that reason, these same level of results may not take place in the oral environment.
Electric toothbrushes offer a good solution to this. They are not only fun to use, but they also employ the correct brush movements that our hands often tend to disregard when we clean our teeth manually.
