No ordinary brush head though is this.  Thanks to a built in chip, when you fit onto a compatible brush handle, the microchip communicates with the brush handle to launch the optimum cleaning mode and intensity level for the most effective plaque removal experience.
An electric toothbrush operates by rotating, oscillating or vibrating without requiring any action on your part other than to turn it on. The movements of a manual toothbrush depend on actions you perform, and because you cannot match the movements of even the slowest electric toothbrush, you might think an electric toothbrush is more effective in removing plaque. However, the American Dental Hygienists Association and the American Dental Association state that both can thoroughly and effectively clean your teeth and gums. The determining factor lies more in method than on the type of toothbrush.
Brush for two minutes, and don’t use too much pressure. Brush lightly and for the recommended two minutes. Brushing for less time won’t remove plaque and brushing too hard or too much could damage your teeth or gums.

The pressure sensor is meant to alert the user when they are brushing too hard, something that dentists and experts agree is a bad thing. In theory, then, a pressure sensor can be good. However, in our testing, we found that some brushes with pressure sensors required the user to bear down very hard on their teeth before the alert would trigger. The amount of pressure a user can apply before the sensor discourages them suggests the available pressure sensors are more of a gimmick than an actual useful feature.
Excessive pressure indicator – All Sonicare models will tend to stall out or stutter when the user applies too much force. Beyond that, some models offer more sophisticated pressure and even scrubbing indicators.

Currently, there is no research that supports the notion that more settings and modes provide a better cleaning. However, it is a good enough reason for manufacturers to offer such toothbrushes at a higher price.
NiCd batteries have an attribute called ‘memory’, which quickly eats away the battery life if you don’t fully discharge the battery before charging it again. Since the voltage fall-off curve is fairly soft, that means the toothbrush or whatever it is that you’re using will lose effectiveness long before you fully discharge the battery as well. Also, I think it’s worth mentioning that I believe some Sonicare models use NiMH batteries (most modern rechargables probably should, if not Li-ion…)
“I think that one of the things that people look for with Bluetooth connection—or anything that connects to their phone—is confirmation that what they’re doing is enough, or good, or better than what they were doing before,” Dr. Maria Lopez-Howell, a dentist and ADA spokesperson told us. “And I think that, if this gives the patient information that they’re brushing enough time, [and] if this is encouraging a patient to brush—this is something that the American Dental Association is wanting.”
You are correct that there’s no evidence that different brush heads will clean your teeth better, but we think having a range of available brush heads matters in so far as personal preference is concerned. You brush your teeth twice a day every day, so you probably want the brush head to feel comfortable.
Aside from these older tests, we didn’t find any independently conducted research that both draws the conclusion that one model or type is better than another and explains the process and results. And none of our experts differentiated between the plaque removal ability in any of the types or models of brushes available.

The Sonicare for Kids is our top pick for this category because it both trains and encourages kids to brush properly. In addition, the handle is closer in size to adult models than the Oral-B Disney’s, which means it isn’t too big now, and your kids won’t outgrow this $40 toothbrush too quickly. Instead, they’ll be able to improve their technique and become familiar with using a traditionally-sized electric toothbrush as they develop more dexterity.
In order to begin a dental hygiene associate’s degree program, students are usually required to complete a certain number of prerequisite courses with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The topics can range from science to communications:
Offering the deepest clean, the Sonicare electric toothbrush is not as effective without such an engineered brush head.  Taking full advantage of the high-frequency and high-amplitude brush movements, performing over 31,000 strokes per minute, the brush head takes that power and drives toothpaste and fluid deep in between teeth.

Please note: During the most recent update of our Oral-B pages (11/5/2015), we noticed that the Pulsonic was no longer listed with other current products on the Oral-B (USA) website. For that reason, we must assume that it has been discontinued.
The effectiveness of this type of cleansing generally has to do with the amplitude of the brush head (the distance, up or down, it travels on each stroke) and also its frequency (number of strokes per minute). Sonic toothbrushes characteristically are very efficient tooth scrubbers (see below).

These are excellent replacement brush heads for the Sonicare toothbrush. I tried an off-brand replacement before that did not fit the toothbrush. These fit perfectly and very snug! I’ve been using it for about a week now and I’m still very pleased with my purchase. They are a little softer than I’m use to, but I don’t mind…especially when consider that an 8-pack is only $14 compared to a 2-pack of the Sonicate brand for between $20-$30! If you’re looking for a high-quality, inexpensive replacement, look no further.
We’d also suggest that 6 months out or so, even those people who originally enjoyed the novelty (yes, just novelty) of having more than one brushing mode to choose from have long since forgotten that these options exist, and likely even how to activate them.
The American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA) defines dental hygienists as oral health professionals who are responsible for preventing and treating oral diseases. Regardless of the state in which they practice, dental hygienists must be state licensed, which requires graduating from a college or university dental hygienist program and passing a written national board examination and state clinical examination.
First, the models had to be available to the North American consumer. There are various brands that manufacture products above the average standard, but for various reasons, do not make them available in the United States. We have not included such brands and models because they would not be of use to our readers.
If you’re committed to the idea of attending dental hygienist school and then becoming a dental hygienist, you can take satisfaction in knowing you’ve made a great choice. Not only are salaries better than average and working conditions often flexible, you’re choosing a career that promises a healthy job growth over at least the next decade. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the job growth for dental hygienists will be 20 percent through at least the next decade, which is much faster than average for all other occupations.
Like we discussed above, plaque (especially mature plaque) definitely can provide a fortress for the ‘bad bugs’ to increase their populations (bad news).  A recent article titled, Understanding the root cause of tooth decay and gum disease, explains how the microbes in an environment are the heavy hitters that ‘control the playing field’.  When plaque matures, the types of microbes shift from a healthy balance of microbes to an environment dominated and controlled by ‘bad bugs’.
Brush Heads: Oral-B has 5 available brush heads and comes with three (cross action, whitening, and sensitive brush heads), Sonicare has 5 available brush heads and comes with two (AdaptiveClean, InterCare)
Being equipped with a NiMH battery, the overall life expectancy of this toothbrush is over 2 years. In case it breaks down within that period of time, Philips will replace it. When we tested this model with its battery fully charged, it lasted 15 days. We used it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. On the 15th day, the battery died during the evening brush. It still performed quite alright during the morning brushing activity.
But what really sets the TAO Clean Aura Clean Orbital Facial Brush apart from its competitors? It’s the TAO Clean Aura Clean Base Station – a unique charging base for your brush handle that won’t take up a lot of space on your vanity, it also cleans and dries your brush head! Once you dock your damp brush after cleansing your face, the 360-degree TAO Clean Aura Clean Halo uses powerful UV-C rays to kill 99.9% of bacteria, and then the built-in dryer wicks away any moisture from the brush to ensure that no germs grow.
I’ve used regular toothbrushes my entire life, but at the recommendation of my new dentist, I looked into an electric tooth brush. I asked my dentist if she had a recommendation, but she more or less said that any electric toothbrush will likely be better than a manual toothbrush, but that she personally uses a Sonicare tooth brush that’s a few years old. With that in mind, down the rabbit hole if internet researching I went.
Although it is difficult to say definitively which Sonicare brush head is the best, there is the ProResults (view on Amazon) brush head which is an excellent solution for most users offering superior every day, all round cleaning.
Unlike dental assistants, whose job duties must generally be performed under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist, dental hygienists perform much of their work independently, with only general supervision from a licensed dentist.
The ProResults brush heads have angled, radial trimmed bristles that are 10% wider angle than typical brush heads and are designed to squeeze around teeth better. They have standard and compact sizes.

  1. Nothing but frustration with Phillips USA that owns Sonicare. My product failed and at first Phillips said they would do nothing. Then they agreed to replace it, but sent me a computer battery instead. Then they sent 3 Sonicare AIrfloss. I had to go to the post office four times to return items they sent by mistake. My chats and calls to the company were disconnected. Promises were made then rescinded. In frustration I wrote the CEO about the hours of my time they wasted with their compounded mistakes. Mr Brent Shafer, the CEO waited weeks before they would respond and all they would do is of free couple brush heads – not appropriate in my book given the massive amount of time and frustration they caused me.
If I have to touch a not clean enuf for me item, (like everywhere) or want to clean my toothbrush over night, I just reach for my bottle of vinegar. Vin is also fab for cleaning the M/Wave,Hob,oven fronts, windows, mirror, you name it. Use it on a few pieces of kitchen roll and you will just love the shine. It can stops unsightly fungus in its tracks, from growing under finger and toe nails. Just fill under the nail cavity with vin/water using a medicine dropper and keep nail upright for a while to dry. As the nail grows, it will become good again. When my husband came home from hospital with his back covered in spots, I washed him with vin. and on telling a Dr. he said I had done the best possible thing, and that vinegar was all there had been to keep bugs at bay during WW1 & 2. Remember, 50-50 white vinegar and water for bugs, cleaning and shine, but brown vinegar for food. I also cleaned a 60 odd year old, well used, EP&S tablespoon spoon. I stood it in an inch of vin overnight. The result was one inch bright and clean the rest of it was still quite tarnished, result – I put the whole spoon in vin the next night. great and I can still use my grandmothers spoon with love. A litre of vinegar can cost as little as 86p and you can pick it up when shopping. Saves a visit to the Dr. who will give you ‘STUFF’ we know could be harmful or a trip to the Chemist where they will charge o lot of money for few applications of medication. And no I don’t own a vinegar shop. Oh, to say nothing of fish and chips!
Get a high quality butter oil / fermented cod oil mix which is extremely good for teeth (and general health) I highly suggest that Blue Ice brand (google it I can’t remember the exact name). They got 5 or 6 different products I’d highly recommend for teeth. Also get a vitamin K-2 supplement which gives you the MK-7 form. You want to make sure of 2 things with the K2 supplement: A. it uses olive oil (preferablly organic) as it’s carrier (this leaves out the Jarrows brand), B. it’s made from a fermented Japanese food called Natto using non-GMO soybeans. There are a few good brands for this, NutriGold is one and there was another I may have liked even a touch better than NutriGold but I can’t remember the name of of the brand now (I think it was more of a white bottle/label). But don’t forget about the Blue Ice products, seriously, they are amazing. Read about all the great successes people have had with the organic butter oil / fermented cod liver oil with regards to teeth/cavities, it’ll probably make all these so-called “professionals” crap their pants, their brains wouldn’t be able to handle it since it wasn’t indoctrinated into their heads by some brainwashing (in some ways, not all) textbook.

  2. The funny thing about electric toothbrushes is how similar a $70 model is to a $200 one. Once we get past the features mentioned above, there are precious few necessary value-adds to an expensive electric toothbrush: a travel case, a UV sanitizer (which is of negligible use), maybe a couple extra heads, a slightly sleeker body, a longer-lasting battery, auto-syncing with an app (See What about “smart” toothbrushes?). As for sonic cleaning, different cleaning modes, or pressure sensors, experts tell us they are not necessary.
One thing worth pointing out about electric toothbrushes is that they are not cheaper in the long run. Electric toothbrushes cost about 10 times as much as manual toothbrushes, and you have to replace the brush heads at the same frequency (every three months), each for about the same cost as a manual brush. What you get for the higher cost is less friction in achieving good brushing habits, and, according to research, a significant reduction in plaque and gingivitis, even if that reduction may come only from having a brush that encourages good habits, like a full two minutes of brushing for each session.
Do not soak your toothbrush in mouthwash or a disinfecting solution. According to the American Dental Association, there is no clinical evidence that soaking your toothbrush in antibacterial mouthwash has any effect on your oral health.[13]

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love these things when they work. But they are exceptionally unreliable. Reading the comments and reviews on Amazon, it appears I’m not alone. However, it also appears their competitors suffer from the same issues of reliability. So I think as long as you are prepared for a very short life and are willing to shell out the cash, they are worth purchasing. Just be aware.
Although it’s not necessary to work as a dental hygienist, a graduate degree in the field can propel you into careers in education, leadership, advocacy and administration. Dental hygienists with advanced dental hygienist schooling often go on to work as:
When you are sick there may be more pathogenic bacteria than normal, and when you brush your teeth some of that bacteria is collected on the toothbrush. Studies have not been done to show how much is left after you rinse your toothbrush and if it would be enough to cause you to get sick again in the future or not. Just to be sure, when you are sick disinfect the toothbrush by letting it soak in an antibacterial solution for 10 minutes after brushing each time.
A 2014 study published in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology notes that an herbal mouth rinse containing clove, tea tree oil and basil reduced the microbial colony forming units, making it an effective antiplaque and antigingivitis agent.
The variety and diversity of rechargable toothbrushes on the market can be overwhelmingly annoying. Especially, when you have decided to buy and use one. Besides the numerous differences in design, color and battery life, motor-powered toothbrushes also differ in the manner in which they clean teeth. In fact, there are five different ways to choose from.
