Best New Brush: Launched in 2015, Quip takes a pragmatic approach to helping people switch from manual to electric toothbrushes. First, Quip’s innovatively designed body vibrates for two minutes to make sure users are brushing long enough. Second, its bristles pulsate every 30 seconds to indicate when to brush a different area of their mouth. Third, users get mailed a new brush head every three months (each is an additional $5) to remind them it’s time to switch out the old. Finally, it’s only a $25 initial commitment, so if it doesn’t fit your lifestyle you won’t feel bad about switching back to a regular brush.
Good self-care, such as brushing with fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing, and professional treatment, is key to good oral health.1, 2, 3, 4 Health behaviors that can lead to poor oral health include:
Though I did not think so at the time, I was fortunate when I was a child because my parents were able to afford to have braces put on my teeth. I knew many other children who could have benefited from wearing braces, but their parents could not afford the braces, or regular visits to a dentist.

This toothbrush lasted for about 6 months -then the battery died. I changed the brush head every couple of weeks, and really liked the power of this toothbrush. When I called about the warranty you have to pay for the shipping there and back. Too bad, I thought I might be the only one with this problem, until I read the reviews.

I have major dentist phobia. That is putting it lightly. From the moment I called to make my appointment at Primary Dental, I knew I was going to be ok. The office staff are so thoughtful and kind. They knew that I was nervous and went above and beyond to help calm my nerves and assure me that the dentist was very gentle. They were right.
The Coalition is part of a larger movement nationwide to expand access to dental care. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation is supporting efforts in five states – Kansas, New Mexico, Ohio,Vermont and Washington – to pursue an innovative dental provider model that can expand access to dental care by adding an additional provider to the team. Community Catalyst, a national health advocacy organization, is helping to lead the effort.
The affordable Oral-B Pro 1000 makes taking good care of your teeth easy. You can pay more for additional features, but according to the experts, there’s no need to—this simple, entry-level brush cleans your teeth as well as any of the many more expensive brushes.
Frequent use of sugar based paediatric medicines is associated with increased risk of caries in vulnerable chronically sick children. Caries can be prevented by using sugar free medicines.65 Greater use of sugar free medicines is dependent upon action by medical and pharmaceutical professions together with the pharmaceutical industry. For example, the computerised labelling of Sugar Free options on GPs IT prescribing systems will encourage GPs to select these healthier choices.
Choose a brush mode. Some of the Sonicare models have multiple modes, like sensitive, whitening, deep clean and others. With them, you can customize the cleaning process for your special needs. Other Sonicare toothbrushes, on the other hand, offer just one standard cleaning mode.
A wealth of high quality epidemiological data has been collected in the UK over the last 30 years in both national and district surveys amongst children and adults. It is therefore possible to assess the changing trends in oral diseases within the population and identify regional and social class differences. Recording of the ethnicity of subjects has however not been included in many epidemiological surveys.
If flossing action doesn’t appeal to you, Oral-B makes a Dual Action Vitality brush with the same handle but different shaped brush heads that’s under the $40 mark. If you like the oscillating action of Oral-B brushes, you won’t find a generic brush handle with the same kind of scrubbing movement. There are lots of great alternative for sonic brushes, but for oscillation–stick to name brand. This brush costs about the same as five lattes.
Applying dental sealants to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth is another way to prevent tooth decay. Studies in children show that sealants reduce decay in the permanent molars by 81% for 2 years after they are placed on the tooth and continue to be effective for 4 years after placement.5

In the case of general anaesthesia for dental procedures there is now a clear directive from the CMO/CDO report on general anaesthesia and sedation16,17 which will have the effect of moving residual general anaesthetic provision into hospitals. Lastly, primary dental care practitioners may be increasingly guided towards referral through clinical governance mechanisms or advice from indemnity organisations.
A nice perk of all Sonicare brushes, including the 2 Series, is that the brush heads come with a tiny plastic hood you can snap off and on to guard against the coliform sprays flying around one’s bathroom if you store your toothbrush in open air. The cap is easy to lose, but it’s a nice touch.
It’s one thing to hear your hygienist say, “You really need to pay more attention to your back molars.” But it’s quite another thing to actually see your hygienist scraping tartar from your back molars so you can following up with proper brushing and flossing at home.

As Table 2 illustrates, we were not able to identify any randomized trial assessing the effectiveness of any strategy of interest to this review. Three of the included research projects [65, 66, 91–94] were conducted in the USA and applied a one-group pre-test, post-test design, and one was a Canadian cross-sectional study [95]. Methodological quality was low for three of the included research projects [65, 91, 95] and low moderate for one [66, 92–94] (see S4 Appendix for detailed quality ratings).
Visit the Find a Program page to search through approximately 200 community-based oral health programs, across the nation, in 11 categories. Good oral hygiene has always been the cornerstone of public and private dental health promotion. However, this has often been based upon incorrect assumptions. The public is not always willing and does not always need to change its oral health behavior to the same extent as that expected by the dental profession. The present commentary emphasizes the need to modify oral hygiene instruction according to specific risk and motivation levels. Dentistry needs to be flexible in accepting new evidence-based modalities of oral health promotion. Dentists, dental hygienists and the entire health care team need to accept that the traditional methods of oral health education are not always effective.
“Overall, Oral-B’s products are excellent,” he told Reader’s Digest, “but this newest model is a truly smart brush that will not only provide a superior feeling of clean but also astound the user with its relevant technological advancements. Pressure sensors allow prevent users from overbrushing. Timers ensure adequate, but not overzealous, attention is given to the teeth and gums. An assortment of LED colors allow for personalization, and Bluetooth technology provides you with customized real-time feedback about your brushing habits (delivered right to your smartphone).”
Some brands even go as far as installing Bluetooth connectivity to your brush which allows you to track your brushing habits through an app. It may not be encouraging for adults but it’s a great way to help children get used to brushing their teeth.
Young kids have no concept of time. If you don’t have a timer, be prepared for your child to give each side of their mouth a few swipes and then claim to be done. If you want to help your child understand how long they should be brushing, a timer is the best way to go.
I got this toothbrush based on my dentist’s recommendation. I’ve always considered myself a pretty decent brusher, but I do have some sensitivity and a small cavity every year or two. My dentist recommended this electric toothbrush as something that would improve my oral health without breaking the bank (since I didn’t need THAT much help).
As mentioned earlier, there are also some differences in what each of these handles focuses on. The Oral-B 5000’s emphasis is plaque removal around the gum line. The emphasis of the 6000 is teeth whitening, and the emphasis of the 7000 is to provide an individualized tooth by tooth clean.
My dentist recommended that I only use an electric toothbrush, is Be. dentist recommended? We have shown Be. to a handful of professionals in Portland, and the feedback has been nothing but great. We are taking the steps to get Be officially recommended by the ADA as well as endorsed by local dental practices.
Short battery life. Oral-B claims the battery life on the Oral-B Kid’s Power Rechargeable Toothbrush lasts up to 5 days on a single battery charge. Many users found this untrue, and report have to charge it every night to ensure optimal performance.
The Goby Electric Toothbrush is only a few dollars more than our other picks and comes with the same no-frills features: a two-minute timer that shuts the brush off at the end, plus a quadrant timer to prompt you to switch areas every 30 seconds. Goby offers an “optional” brush head subscription service—however, keep in mind that you can’t get new brush heads anywhere else and there is only one kind available. Unlike the Sonicare, there is no travel case to stash your brush head.
Oral-B Pulsar toothbrush is battery operated to gently vibrate and polish away stains for a whiter, cleaner smile. Using the same technique to brush as a manual toothbrush, the bristles vibrate providing a gentle massaging and polishing action while brushing. The bristles penetrate between teeth where stain build-up often begins. Plus, the split head design moderates the amount of pressure applied to your teeth and gums. Contouring to your unique smile, the Pulsar toothbrush will leave your smile bright and clean with every use. Battery-operated brushing for a brighter smile.
I have to say that this is an incredible electric tooth brush. I love the fact that it comes with two heads, flossers, a tongue scraper, etc! Not only do you receive all of that, but the product itself keeps my teeth and gums feeling super clean and smooth. When you use all of the products, you will feel as if you just walked out of the dentist’s office with the cleanest teeth and freshest breath!!
Replace brush head reminder not customizable: The app reminds you to change your brush head every ninety days. I see the damage of waiting too long to replace brush heads all the time in my private practice. Ninety days is too long.
Purpose: According to the report Healthy People 2020, oral health is integral to overall health and access to dental services is essential to promoting and maintaining good oral health. Yet, those who need dental care the most are often the least likely to receive it. The dental hygiene profession is poised to play a pivotal role in the resolution of oral health disparities. The purpose of this manuscript is to examine the critical issue of access to oral health care in the United States from various perspectives and consider potential implications for dental professionals and the oral health care system. This report focuses on major underserved and vulnerable populations and highlights several barriers that significantly affect the ability to access and navigate the oral health care system. These include low socioeconomic status; the shortage and maldistribution of dentists; a lack of professional training regarding current evidence-based oral health guidelines; deficient continuity of care due to inadequate interdisciplinary collaboration; low oral health literacy; and patient perceptions and misconceptions about preventive dental care. This report also contains an update on provider participation in Medicaid; the state of children’s oral health; and emerging workforce models, state initiatives, and legislative reforms. Recommendations increasing access to care require local, state, and federal stakeholders to combine forces that take advantage of the existing dental hygiene workforce, utilize innovative delivery models, improve license reciprocity, reduce prohibitive supervision, and expand the dental hygiene scope of practice. The major focus of future research will be on the implementation of mid-level oral health care providers. Dental hygienists are an integral part of the access to care solution and have a great opportunity to lead the call to action and fulfill the American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s mandate that oral health care is the right of all people.
The other problem with the Cochrane report is that though it’s conducted by a nonprofit, it includes in its survey studies that are conducted by companies testing their own toothbrush products. Unsurprisingly, we’ve never found a study published by P&G’s Oral-B that has found its electric toothbrushes inferior to another brand; the same goes for Philips’s Sonicare. This doesn’t necessarily apply to every study, but it applies to a gross majority of the toothbrush research available. But caveats about biased research aside, scientists do consistently find that an electric toothbrush is significantly better at removing plaque and reducing gingivitis in the average person’s mouth.
Gum disease is diagnosed when probing reveals one or more periodontal pockets, or areas where the gum has pulled away from the tooth, 4 millimeters deep or greater. In some cases, only one quadrant, or quarter of the mouth, may be affected. In other cases, the affected areas may span throughout the entire mouth.
There is an imbalance in the makeup of the nation’s physicians, dentists, and nurses.  This imbalance contributes to the gap in health status and the impaired access to health care experienced by a significant portion of our population.  The Sullivan Commission on Diversity in the Healthcare Workforce finds that African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, and certain segments of the nation’s Asian/Pacific Islander population are not present in significant numbers.  Rather, they are missing!  While some outstanding physicians, dentists, and nurses are minorities, access to a health professions career remains largely separate and unequal.  This report, Missing Persons: Minorities in the Health Professions, examines the root causes of this challenge and provides detailed recommendations on how to increase the representation of minorities in the nation’s medical, dental, and nursing workforce.
Make sure that your children’s drinking water is fluoridated. If your water supply; municipal, well or bottled does not contain fluoride, your dentist or pediatrician may prescribe daily fluoride supplements.
You’ll have a choice of several different kinds of toddler toothbrushes. Luckily, they are generally cheap so if your toddler decides they hate one type of toothbrush you can move on to another kind and not be out much money.

Be aware of patients’ health coverage for dental services during pregnancy so that referrals to the appropriate dental provider can be made. Note that each state’s Medicaid coverage for oral health may vary considerably.

  1. Turn off mouthwash reminder. Most mouthwashes disrupt gut health and the microbiome by killing both the good and the bad bacteria and disrupting the balance of bacteria necessary in the mouth for good oral health.
We require all recipients to address all performance measures (PMs) directed in the NOFO. However, for those recipients wanting an additional PM, they may do so. Using the Word version of the work plan on the NOFO website, create an additional section below the Other Outcome Measures section.
“My favorite electric toothbrush is from Rotadent,” says Kourosh Maddhi, a cosmetic dentist based in Beverly Hills, Calif. “It has very soft bristles, thus minimizing damage to the gum.” The brush automatically shuts off after 2 and a half minutes of use, and the charge lasts up to 3 weeks.
This also helps to add to the “flossing” effect of a sonic toothbrush, which, while not a full replacement for the real thing, is still better at dislodging smaller bits of food from between your teeth than a rotating brush might be.
Seeing a dentist regularly helps to keep your mouth in top shape and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues. A dental exam can also detect poor nutrition and hygiene, growth and development problems and improper jaw alignment. Provide your dentist with a complete medical history and inform him or her of any recent health developments, even if they seem unrelated to your oral health.
As an adult, you are not immune to dental problems. In addition to maintaining a good home care routine, the best thing you can do is to schedule regular dental checkups and professional cleanings. You also have a variety of cosmetic options available, including orthodontics (braces), whitening (both in-office and at-home) and bonding (veneers).
For healthy teeth, take care of your toothbrush. Rinse it well after toothbrushing. Then, in an upright position, make sure to store it out in the open. Plenty of air flow around the bristles will help keep your brush dry; microorganisms that can grow on your toothbrush tend to thrive in a moist environment. When it is no longer effective, get a new one. The American Dental Association recommends replacing toothbrushes every three to four months, although with children you may need to change sooner. Keep an eye out for frayed, worn bristles.
Dental Public Health (DPH) is that part of dentistry providing leadership and expertise in population-based dentistry, oral health surveillance, policy development, community-based disease prevention and health promotion, and the maintenance of the dental safety net. DPH and the private practice model of care delivery together bear the responsibility of assuring optimal oral health for all Americans – individuals and populations.
You need only to apply light pressure when guiding this toothbrush over your teeth–the Essence will do the work for you through its high speed bristle motion and dynamic cleaning action. The easy-start option gently increases the toothbrush’s power over the first 12 uses to help you adjust to using a power toothbrush. The Smartimer feature sets brushing time to two minutes, the time recommended by dental professionals, and shuts the toothbrush off after that cycle.
8 DUPONT BRUSH HEADS & 4 PIECE DENTAL KIT INCLUDED – Every Black Series toothbrush comes with 8 brush heads engineered by world famous DuPont; a world leader in quality & materials science. Also included is a professional 4 piece stainless steel dental kit which should be used once a week to remove more stubborn stains and is especially useful for those with braces and other dental devices or simply use it every so often to scrape off calculus, tartar and plaque buildup along gum lines.

  2. Flossing is an age-old technology that people have used to clean their teeth. However, unlike in the past when people used flossing cords, powerful and efficient flossers such as such a Waterpik Aquarius Water Flosser are now available. Buy yours to get a compact item with an eye-catching contemporary look. Its affordability is impressive, while the ON/OFF switch it comes with eases its operation. Do not pay expensive fees to keep your teeth in top shape.
Patients should carefully review the cost of a dental benefit plan before purchase by comparing the average annual cost of a household’s dental bills with the proposed 12 monthly premium payments for “dental insurance”. It may make more financial sense to pay out-of-pocket for dental care than to pay a monthly premium.
I really like this winning smile electric toothbrush. I must admit, I did not know that it was coming with so many additional things. Caught me by surprise. I was needing an affordable option that still had all the features of some of the other brands that cost more than twice what I paid. And something else that I like is it has a great grip while I’m brushing my teeth. So the bottom line why I am a fan is the cost really is attractive especially when you consider that I got all the features of the big brand options. When I was looking at the other options the cost of some of the big brands are so high compared to this. Guess they have to pay for all of those endorsements and big epensive TV ads. And like I said, there were several surprises when I opened the box. Why don’t the big brands throw in all of the extras like I got with this? Basically a one stop shop for my tooth brushing needs. Yes, even the tooth paste squeezer so that I can get that last drop of tooth paste. But since I saved so much (I could buy 2 of these for the cost of one of the other big brands!) I probably won’t be worried about having to get that last drop of tooth paste. My teeth do feel that squeaky clean feeling like when you get your teeth cleaned. I like that.

If you happen to miss any spots while brushing, the Location Sensor will highlight them and bring them to your attention. The TouchUp feature then provides guidance so you can immediately address any missed areas and achieve a more complete clean.

  3. Community development strategies aim to improve the capacity of less powerful groups by developing collective social networks and thus accessing resources. This approach recognises the strengths and capabilities collective action can achieve to create healthier conditions for poor communities.67 Such an approach has been rarely applied directly to oral heath issues. However an oral health promotion programme in Newcastle and North Tyneside is using community link workers to facilitate improvements in oral health amongst socially deprived groups.68
If you find the brush head just isn’t to your liking, Oral-B manufacturers a whole range of different brush heads. There are a lot of choices – sensitive options “flossing” brush heads and side action scrubbers to name a few. For more information on the different types, be sure to check out our detailed guide to Oral-B brush heads.

Chronic illness can interfere with a child’s ability to succeed in school. Evidence shows that increases in missed school time caused by chronic illnesses can lead to declines in school performance.8,9 The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) documented that 1.57 million school days were lost in 1980 as a result of dental problems.10 Using 1984 NHIS data, Waldman reported that children and adolescents aged younger than 18 years had approximately 5 million restricted activity days, more than 1.6 million days in bed, and more than 1.7 million missed school days as a result of acute dental conditions.11 A number commonly cited in the literature is that more than 51 million school hours are lost annually because of illnesses related to dental problems,1,12–20 a statistic emanating from an analysis of the 1989 NHIS data conducted by Gift et al.13
Many of the treatments provided by general dental practitioners (GDPs), especially in the private sector, are primarily cosmetic in nature and secondarily associated with treatment of disease, whereas GPs have a prime focus on treatment and management of disease. This difference in emphasis again changes the relationship between clinician and patient, with the dental patient more likely to adopt attitudes associated with a customer rather than a patient.
Philips Sonicare reminder bristles are designed to give you a visual indication of this microscopic breakdown, letting you know when it’s time to replace your brush head. If you use your brush head twice a day for the full two minutes, it needs to be replaced every three months.

Some people with angina take drugs called calcium channel blockers. These drugs can cause gum overgrowth. This can happen as soon as one month after you start these drugs. Some people’s gums become so large that they have problems chewing. People who have this problem will most likely need surgery on their gums (periodontal surgery).

  4. Waterpik Aquarius is a high-powered water flosser that cleans teeth like a charm. Its electricity-powered system is easy to use. You can also adjust its pressure to customize how it cleans your teeth. Whether you have normal or sensitive ones, therefore, expect good results.
Research is needed to support an array of methods to address clinical questions, and increased efforts are needed to develop technologies for clinical risk assessment and diagnosis. Public-private partnerships are essential to understanding the causes and pathological processes of oral diseases and to enhance more rapid development of interventions. Communities and organizations must be able to benefit from scientific advances, which may contribute to changes in the reimbursement and delivery of services as well as enhance knowledge of risk factors.71 Dissemination of oral health advances is critical to the effective transfer of research findings to the public, providers, and policy makers.1,72
Following the Darzi39 report of the last government, which called for quality to be a key organising principle of the NHS, the current government’s NHS white paper40 seeks to promote a patient-focused, clinically-led, outcomes-driven NHS. The NHS constitution41 published by the previous government and supported and updated by the current government lists as one of its seven guiding principles; ‘The NHS aspires to the highest standards of excellence and professionalism – in the provision of high-quality care that is safe, effective and focused on patient experience’. So quality is not going to go away and will touch every service provided by the NHS and by extension patient expectations will rise and have an impact on care provided in the private sector. In England the first steps have been taken to incentivise quality in the pilots for a new dental contract and the development of a Dental Quality Outcomes Framework (DQOF).34 The DQOF is a start to the process of incentivising quality, we don’t know if it reflects all of the important elements of quality or, importantly, if the indicators included are valid and reliable measures of quality. It will need to be refined through rigorous academic input. It is well accepted that policy and research move at different paces and there has been pressure to rapidly produce quality outcome measures for dentistry for the new contract pilots. However, this does not preclude the commissioning high quality research to inform the evolution of the DQOF to provide confidence to all stakeholders that it actually does what is expected of it.
This is a great starter toothbrush for toddlers right from the age of 10 months because some babies grow teeth at that tender age. It has super-soft bristles that will gently care for your baby’s tender gums. It also has three unique toothbrush heads for different purposes, one is used for gum stimulation while the other two are for regular brushing.
We’ll also mention that using any of Oral-B’s better plaque removers should produce the same general effect of removing stain over time, although likely more slowly. (As proof, Sonicare states their brushes remove staining yet none of their heads features a rubber cup.)
Now for the heads themselves. New Sonicare 2 came in and I immediately noticed the had being smaller than anything I’m used too, it also felt pretty odd in my mouth. So then I slipped on a Sonifresh head, which is the size I’m used too (mediumish maybe?), and felt right at home brushing.
Preventive services are included in this tool. Preventive care coverage varies by plan and by demographic considerations such as age. Refer to your benefit plan to determine whether preventive services are covered for you.
“One isn’t better than the other,” Dr. Howell says. “But sometimes the individual person will use one more easily than the other.” There are many varieties of electric toothbrushes out there. But instead of relying solely on a person to scrub plaque away, electric toothbrushes generally use vibration, rotation (going around in a circle), or oscillation (moving back and forth) to get the job done. They also tend to have larger handles than manual toothbrushes. These aspects make electric toothbrushes good options for people with dexterity issues due to conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis, or just aging in general.
The first time you visit the dental office after being diagnosed with high blood pressure, your dentist may take your blood pressure two or three times. This is to establish a “baseline” blood pressure. This way, the dentist will know if your blood pressure changes in response to treatment or a medicine.
