It’s your toothbrush and cleaning it thoroughly will help you get through this winter’s cold and flu season a little healthier.

Luckily, Blippi, created by his alter-ego Stevin John, had a teeny-tiny sliver of time between takes to talk to Reader’s Digest about dental care for kids. (Don’t forget: Medically trained experts agree dental care for kids is best begun with a simple, appropriately sized manual toothbrush.)
Photo: The head from a sonic toothbrush (seen in the lower part of the photo) is just like an ordinary manual toothbrush. Unlike a standard electric toothbrush, it doesn’t contain a rotating mechanism. The whole brush head vibrates—and this can make sonic toothbrushes a little more tricky to use at first.
When a dentist or dental hygienist cleans your teeth they remove soft (plaque) and hard (tartar, calculus, or stains) deposits from your teeth. The primary purpose of having your teeth cleaned is to prevent or delay the progression of periodontal diseases.
Most kids have small mouths. The large manual toothbrushes available in stores often choke or irritate them when brushing their teeth. This is never a problem with this electric model. Perfect for kids aged over eight years old, it has an ultra-compact head that fits comfortably in the mouth of kids. Kids can also swirl it around their mouths easily, which guarantees a thorough cleaning experience.
I’ve been seeing Dr. King and his staff since 2011 and they have been nothing short of wonderful! Dr. King always greets you with a smile and a hug! He did my adult braces as well as a crown and a veneer. I go there for all my regular cleanings and trust them wholeheartedly!
All are acceptable approaches except for “salary/benefits or hourly wages for dental hygienists, dental assistants, or care coordinators.” You cannot use NOFO funds for personnel providing direct clinical services.
Knockoffs – Did you know that you can find counterfeit electric toothbrushes online? We didn’t. While we may have had a great laugh at the likes of the Sonicair and Oral-C, they infringed on intellectual property, the quality looked dubious and and the companies selling them even more so. This was an immediate no go.
The use of dental floss is important for the cleaning of the areas between teeth (interdental cleaning) and under the gum line. These are areas where the toothbrush bristles can’t reach and clean. For this reason we have to floss our teeth at least once a day in addition to toothbrushing.
There are two key decision factors around this. The first is whether you would like the sweeping action of the TriZone which is more aligned with a manual toothbrush or whether you want the smaller round brush head of the Pro series options which are more inspired by dentists tools and are argued to offer a superior clean. A TriZone brush head reaches over 2-3 teeth at any one time compared to the one tooth approach of the Pro series. Both will offer a better clean removing more plaque than a manual brush. The second factor only applies if you opt for the Pro series brush heads with include:
It is a good idea to avoid X-rays while you are pregnant. X-rays of your mouth should only be taken in an emergency. If you need an X-ray, make sure you are covered with a lead apron to protect your baby from radiation.
A case study published in the edition volume 2, 2013 compared the plaque and gingivitis reducing efficacy of oscillating-rotating and sonic toothbrushes. After a 12 week clinical comparison involving 130 adult volunteers, it was concluded that the oscillating-rotating toothbrushes performed better.
From the article: In native communities where dental therapists are working, children and adults had more access to preventative care (things like dental exams, fluoride treatments, and cleanings) and a lower incidence of serious dental issues requiring invasive procedures like tooth extractions.
In considering women’s oral health during pregnancy it is important to focus on the hormonal changes that women experience and how these might affect the periodontal tissues and increase the body’s propensity to inflammation, says Mariano Sanz, professor and chair of periodontology at the University Complutense of Madrid (Spain).
Become familiar with the appearance of your own mouth and teeth through frequent examination. This way, you will be able to catch any changes at an early stage and have these changes examined by a dentist. Look for the development of any spots, lesions, cuts, swellings, or growths on your gums, tongue, cheeks, inside of your lips, and floor and roof of your mouth. Examine your teeth for any signs of chipping or cracking, discoloration, and looseness. If you experience a change in your bite or develop pain, call your dentist as soon as possible. An oral exam is particularly important to conduct if you are a tobacco user, since you are at an increased risk of developing oral cancer.
Patients should carefully review the cost of a dental benefit plan before purchase by comparing the average annual cost of a household’s dental bills with the proposed 12 monthly premium payments for “dental insurance”. It may make more financial sense to pay out-of-pocket for dental care than to pay a monthly premium.
Next I searched for any studies comparing rotary (Oral-B) to oscillating (Sonicare) power brush heads. I won’t post links to all the scientific studies I read, but the are quite a few on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) site. The more recent ones favor rotary brush heads.
Bacteria can spread from your oral cavity to your bloodstream, causing a life-threatening infection of your heart valves. Your dentist may suggest you take antibiotics as a preventive measure before they perform any dental procedure that could dislodge bacteria in your mouth.

Credit where credit’s due, though: The Oral-B app is very well-designed, with every feature and setting you could possibly dream of. A session timer is the first thing you see when you boot the app up. Pair the toothbrush with your phone via Bluetooth 4.0, and the application will start the timer when the brush head starts spinning. By default, you’re committing to a two-minute session, with the app telling you which quadrant of your mouth to scrub for 30 seconds at a time, and when to ease off if you’re putting too much pressure on your gnashers. A separate pane on the timer screen also tries to keep you occupied with a customizable range of content, like brushing tips, news, weather info, calendar appointments, quotes and pretty pictures, as well as on-device photos and videos. You can increase the amount of time you’re told to spend in certain areas of your mouth, should anywhere need special attention, and you can also instruct the app to remind you to rinse, floss and clean your tongue once you’re done brushing. Confirm you’ve completed these tasks, and they’ll be logged as part of the overall session data. Beyond the timer, though, there are plenty of other nooks and crannies to explore.
The Adult Dental Health Survey (ADHS) is carried out every ten years, and investigates people’s dental health, their experiences of dental care and their access to dental services. The survey results provide important information about the dental health of the nation. This information helps health authorities to effectively plan local dental services and shows the extent to which government dental health targets are being met. The results from the different surveys can be compared to allow changes over time to be understood.
“Electric toothbrushes are helpful for certain people, such as those who have trouble using their hands,” says Eugene Antenucci, DDS, a clinical assistant professor at New York University College of Dentistry.
The different colour options allow you to have something that suits your personality a little and further personalisation comes via selecting 1 of 12 colours to light up the SmartRing on the neck of the brush handle.
Ensure that oral health is seen as an integral part of health improvement actions in particular in children and young people with programmes such as Sure Start, implementation of the Scottish framework for nursing in schools, health promoting schools programme and community based health improvement programmes.
In some people, a stroke paralyzes one side of the body. If this happens to you, a family member or caregiver may need to help you with activities of daily living, including your dental care. Special toothbrushes and floss holders also are available. If you wear dentures, they may need to be adjusted.
Gum overgrowth is a possible side effect of some drugs that treat high blood pressure. These include calcium channel blockers. It can begin as soon as one month after you start drug therapy. Some people’s gums become so large that they have difficulty chewing. In some cases, surgery is needed to remove part of the overgrown gum tissue.

“Personally, I love the Oral-B because it lets you know the areas where you’re brushing too hard, which can lead to toothbrush abrasion,” adds Mobile, Alabama dentist, Valerie Musial, DMD. “It’s timed in 30-second increments for each quadrant of the mouth for a total of two minutes. I also love it for the different interchangeable heads that it comes with. I like the one that’s round and similar to what the dental hygienist uses when you come for your biannual cleaning. There is one that is the perfect shape for getting around orthodontic brackets and appliances and another one that is pointed to get in between the teeth for those that don’t floss as well as they should.”
You might have already heard that drinking green tea can help you lose weight. Did you also know that it works well to improve your oral health? It helps prevent your teeth from eroding and keeps starchy foods from decaying your teeth. Swish with it like mouthwash or simply drink more of it.
As discussed throughout this report, underserved and vulnerable populations have both distinct and heterogeneous needs. Therefore, all oral health care professionals need to be sufficiently educated and trained to care for a broad range of individuals and populations. This is especially critical for dentists who will be called upon to provide specialized care and treat patients with the most complex needs. However, as discussed in Chapter 3, upon completion of dental school, students may have had few opportunities to integrate their skills and knowledge with practical hands-on experience
Purchase a power toothbrush to help get to those hard-to-reach areas in between your teeth. Periodontal therapy. This therapy is carried out by the dentist with the cause of eliminating the bacteria that is causing the gum tissue to pull away from the tooth. There’s also an option of laser therapy which helps to sanitize the pocket area that has the bacteria buildup, thus halting the disease process and preventing further recession.
In addition to offering all the features of the ISSA but at a smaller size, there is a smiley face indicator in the base of the ISSA Mini. You will receive a happy face if you brush for more than two minutes and a sad face will appear on the toothbrush if you have not used for more than 12 hours. If you have kids, it may help them improve their brushing habits.
One of the first toothbrushes being reviewed is the Nimbus Microfine tooth brush. It was designed by a periodontist to safely and effectively clean teeth and gums. This brush has two distinct types of soft bristles, which are long-tapered bristles that are very fine and short support bristles. The long-tapered bristles are designed to reach those hard to clean areas and the shorter bristles are made to effectively remove plaque.
