When you are sick there may be more pathogenic bacteria than normal, and when you brush your teeth some of that bacteria is collected on the toothbrush. Studies have not been done to show how much is left after you rinse your toothbrush and if it would be enough to cause you to get sick again in the future or not. Just to be sure, when you are sick disinfect the toothbrush by letting it soak in an antibacterial solution for 10 minutes after brushing each time.

Is there a relationship between “sensitive” mode on some brushes and low or medium “intensity” on Series 3. Fewer strokes/min? Also, please confirm that only “clean” mode, i.e. full bore 31,000 strokes /min, accomplishes the “fluid dynamic” cleaning – or does sensitive &/or med/low intensity just have less?? My concern centers around abrasive notching of the root surface. Does any particular brush head facilitate fluid dynamic cleaning? Intercare? Thanks

Tartar or calculus is formed when calcium and phosphate bind in your mouth they form crystals these crystal harden and thus you have tartar . Using toothpaste with tetrasodium pyrophosphate helps to prevent tartar from forming by removing calcium and magnesium from our saliva inhibiting the formation of calculus. A clinical study on tartar was done over 12 week period using toothpaste with tetrasodium pyrophosphate and sodium tripolyphosphate on 73 subjects who had a Volpe Manhold Calculus Index of 7.0 and greater. After the twelve weeks, the subjects saw a 43.5 % reduction in Calculus Index score. This was the conclusion of the study published in 2003 and its iterations since then. But there are two caveats to this conclusion. One is that a powered toothbrush is equipped to make brushing easier, and therefore good dental health easier to achieve—they require less physical labor to use, and can have built-in mechanisms, like a timer, to make good habits more concrete. Another is that the Cochrane report, which is a survey of randomized controlled trials, also specifies that the studies used were reporting on unsupervised brushing sessions—essentially, participants were sent a toothbrush, either manual or powered, and expected to report back on results. Self-reporting of habits in scientific studies, as a type of information is not as high-quality as observations by scientists in a lab setting, but so far science has not compelled people to quarantine themselves for observations of their toothbrushing habits, nor has the funding materialized to compensate them for their time. Hence, self-reporting is as good as it’s going to get on this scale of habit studying, but it’s far from perfect.

I’m starting to suspect that the strong, oscillating movements of the Oral-B may be contributing to the problem. The ADA (American Dental Association) recommends replacing your toothbrush with a new one every 3-4 months. Personally, I think this is way too long. If you take your time as you brush and if you brush 3 times a day, then the bristles on your toothbrush should be looking pretty haggard at about a months time. Once the bristles get frayed and bent the effectiveness of your toothbrush is drastically lowered. Once your toothbrush isn’t performing as well as it used to, it is time to replace it.

Being a hygienist….has it’s tough days and easy days. LEARNING to become a hygienist is actually one of the most difficult programs you can go through – not in a stuck up way, but I have always been in honors courses throughout highschool and college, and studied 3 years for a double major before discovering and switching into hygiene. It is no joke – at least the program I was in. They only accepted 3.8GPA or higher and required pre-reqs.
