As mentioned earlier, sodium hypochlorite, a common household bleach, can be used as a 0.2% solution for 30 seconds two or three times a week as a cheap and effective means of combating harmful bacteria. The commercial product is 5% or 6%, so this requires diluting the product by a factor of about 30 (half a tablespoon in a full glass of water). The solution will lose activity with time and may be discarded after one day.
I highly don’t recommend leaving acids on teeth, however, Vitamin C on the teeth (and in general) can do wonders so you can use the sodium ascorbate (not ascorbic acid) form of vitamin C on your teeth. When making a glass of a gram or two with water, I sometimes swish it all around for a minute or so, a few separate times, before swallowing.
Someone’s sending me a Waterpik, if that makes any difference, and I’m searching for rinses that may help alleviate some of these problems. Thanks for the review, and for your help. Sorry this is so long.
All dental hygienists in the United States must be licensed by the state in which they practice, after completing a minimum of two years of school and passing a written board known as the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination as well as a clinical board exam. After completing these exams and licenses, dental hygienists may use “R.D.H” after their names to signify that they are a registered dental hygienist. Dental hygienists also have to become licensed in the state in which they intend to practice. State licensure requirements vary, however most states require an associate degree in Dental Hygiene, successful completion of a state licensure examination, as well as a clinical examination also typically administered by the state.
Suitable for all brush handles from Sonicare with the exception of PowerUP Battery and Essence, the ProResults can deliver over 31,000 brush strokes per minute on the appropriate cleaning mode, achieving the maximum cleaning effectiveness.
I highly recommend keeping your toothbrushes clean from airborne bacteria by using the Hangaway Universal Toothbrush Holder in a bathroom cabinet. It’s a great product that I’ve been using for years and it’s on Amazon for only a few dollars!
The FlexCare Platinum comes equipped with 3 brushing modes: Clean, White and Gum Care. Each cleaning mode allows the user to moderate the intensity of the brush using 3 additional levels. This further helps new users to ease into this powerful sonic toothbrush.
NiCd batteries have an attribute called ‘memory’, which quickly eats away the battery life if you don’t fully discharge the battery before charging it again. Since the voltage fall-off curve is fairly soft, that means the toothbrush or whatever it is that you’re using will lose effectiveness long before you fully discharge the battery as well. Also, I think it’s worth mentioning that I believe some Sonicare models use NiMH batteries (most modern rechargables probably should, if not Li-ion…)
I was a Dental Assistant for many years. I considered becoming a Dental Hygienist but changed my mind for the following reasons. My job was full time. The Hygienist had to work part time at 2 offices. Dentist don’t want to pay the salery for full time employment. I knew hygienist who worked at 3 offices and others who couldn’t find jobs. Some worked through dental employment agency’s, a day here a day there. The agency took a cut of their salary. Dentist cram their hygiene patients into a few days. They don’t want to pay for any benefits. The work is very repetitive, much like an assembly line and sedentary. The hygiene room is usually small. The Hygienist usually sees new patients first. It’s their job to clean up some of the most poorly kept mouths which could be absolutely disgusting with the worst bad breath imaginable. So, even though hygienist make a higher hourly wage, being an assistant proved to be much more interesting and secure.

Hi all, I am sure that it is a money thing when it comes to the cost of the lower end brushes to the upper-end ones. I am sure that there is a difference but not that much. Also, when looking at when to replace a brush, I believe it went from 6 months to 3 months, umm, because they make more money. I find it hard to believe it is because the brushes wear out that fast.
1. Pull the brush head away from the brush handle with a small amount of force to release the connection. There will likely be a click and you will revel a metal prong that is the shaft that connects to the motor. The head is now detached.
I didn’t realize I needed a new toothbrush until I happened onto this part of the site. Been using an Arm and Hammer “Spinbrush” ($12 or so at the supermarket) and it’s been fine I guess. But I bought the recommended Oral B model based on the author’s perfect teeth and my 1-clicking habit and there certainly is a huge leap in performance going to a much better tool like this. Much more powerful and seemingly effective. The timer is a pretty cool feature I didn’t even know existed in a toothbrush. I was surprised to find my normal brushing time is more like three minutes as I brushed well past (like a minute) the little 2-minute-warning jig it does.
Bacteria tends to grow in dark, warm and moist places. Keeping your toothbrush covered or stored in a closed container might lead to problems. Let your toothbrush air dry in a holder that allows it to stand up without touching the bristles or other toothbrushes. Replacing your toothbrush every three-to-four months is also important. Avoid sharing toothbrushes as well.
• Removes up to 100% more plaque than a manual toothbrush. • Brush head system: Easy snap-on brush heads for optimal hygiene. • 44% more bristles for a more thorough clean. Provides a superior clean. …
Oral-B is the #1 dentist and hygienist recommended brand worldwide and is the brand that most dentists use themselves, so you know you’ll get a good clean when you use one of their toothbrushes. This is available in soft or medium varieties, depending on your preferences. The colors in your pack of two toothbrushes will vary. This is an Amazon best seller, has superior online reviews, and some people claim that it works as well as electric toothbrushes. If you need a dependable floss as well, consider the Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Comfort Plus Mint Flavor Floss.
Furthermore, the model we purchased for testing broke within a week. The battery died and simply refused to be charged again. Contacting Pursonic did nothing, as we never received a replacement or a decent explanation.
Water flossing is the most effective method of flossing to remove plaque and tartar base on a number of clinical studies done(2) (3) . Using the Sonicare DimaondClean Smart with the C3 Premium Plaque Control, G3 Premium Gum Care & W3 Premium White brush head? If so, thanks to a special chip built into the head, a brush head reminder icon will light up on your brush handle when it is time to change.
There are areas in the United States, typically rural areas, where patients need dental care but have little access to it. Job prospects will be especially good for dental hygienists who are willing to work in these areas.
How long should one of these last – not the heads, but the handle/charger combo? The article says that the power might decrease over time as the rechargeable battery deteriorates, but I didn’t see any estimate of a general lifespan.
I used a couple tubes of whitening toothpaste way back then and it had no effect. Once I switched to a Sonicare powered toothbrush using these brush heads, I saw my teeth get a couple of shades whiter
This article approached the topic exactly as I would have and was so helpful! I had started to get confused about the subtle differences between models I was considering; your summary and all the related info was just the ticket. Thanks for taking the time to create it–a very valuable service.
If you are a fan of Indian or Mexican food, you are in luck. According to dental scientists, spicy cuisines are great for reducing plaque and tartar levels in the mouth. They do this by increasing your production of saliva. As we know, salvia is the secret weapon of the oral environment. It washes over teeth and cleanses them of nasty stuff.
Wet the bristles. Take whatever toothpaste you’re using (be it for cavities, teeth whitening or for bad breath) and squeeze out a half inch of it on the bristles of the Sonicare toothbrush. Quickly scrub the bristles all over your teeth, spreading the toothpaste. Once you turn on the toothbrush and the sonic pulsations begin, it will be difficult to disperse it and this ensures that every part of the mouth is covered by toothpaste.
Flexible sides complement the unique bristle pattern design to remove up to 10 times more plaque, even in the hard to reach areas. Cleaning thoroughly in between teeth and along the gumline, the soft rubbers sides of the Plaque Control brush head adapt to the contours of your mouth.
“Really great toothbrush for anyone; even adults can use it, but just takes a little more effort. It effectively cleans out anything from my teeth and helps keep my teeth looking great. The inductive recharge is great for saving battery, and it’s very easy to hold in your hands. The only downside to this is that the water can drip down from the brush and onto the charging platform, and can leave water stains, but that can be fixed with a wet cloth or napkin.”
